review

AGORA CAFE & RESTAURANT BY MiMi Wu

WHAT IT IS Agora is a café and restaurant inspired by Mexican antijitos (“little cravings”): typical Mexican street food like tacos and quesadillas. Its extensive menu also offers Asian, Tex-Mex, and build-your-own sandwich options. Look out for authentic Myanmar dishes in the coming months. Agora’s delightfully storied cocktails include a revival of Myanmar’s ginbased Pegu Club cocktail, first imbibed in the 1920s, and their version of the world’s longest named cocktail, inspired by Thai flavors. ATMOSPHERE The restaurant is divided into café and dining areas. The café, equipped with Wifi, fronts a back room suitable for 20. Doors lead into the expansive, high-ceilinged dining area with wooden tables, two private rooms, and its own bar. Capable of fitting over 100 people, it would serve well for a fiesta. Cue the Mariachi band. RECOMMENDATION Start with the mild and smooth guacamole with hits of refreshing lime. It’s served with fresh, flour tortilla chips. Patatas bravas, a Spanish tapas of potatoes smothered in tangy garlic aioli and chili, also makes a great snack. For the meal itself, I recommend the Mexican options, specifically the flavorful and moist chicken burrito wrapped in a thin and pliable tortilla. Happily, every bite has the right ratio of meat, beans, and seasoned rice – a requirement of any burrito enthusiast. Without its own noticeable spiciness, build your desired heat level with the accompanying chili-infused tomato sauce, and don’t be shy about adding guacamole. The quesadillas (your choice of meat and melted cheese sandwiched between tortillas) is another great option. If you’re not in the mood for meat, try the fish and chips. Agora adds Myanmar Beer to their batter, producing a light and airy encasing around a malty flavored fish. Mexican purists know that corn is king. Already, the ever-impressive owner May Thin Kyu is looking to source quality corn flour for authentic tortillas and chips. Admittedly, (as an American) I’m partial to flour tortillas, so I hope both options remain. FINAL THOUGHTS Like good Mexican food should, Agora satisfies without weighing you down. Though I would have liked more spice in the actual dishes, I also enjoyed having the side tomato chili sauce. With such an extensive menu, the only challenge you’ll likely have is deciding what to order. Here’s a hint: you’ll never go wrong with quesadillas or burritos and a side of guacamole. No. 84, Kanbe Main Road (Opposite of Yankin Children Hospital), Yankin Tsp. | Ph: 0930198968 | Opening Hours: 10:00 Am to 10:00 Pm

BOOK OF THE month Myanmar: Cuisine, Culture, and Customs Since Myanmar’s opening to the world in 2012, there has been a marked increase in interest in learning all things about the country. The problem tourists will face is the severe lack of relevant information found in print or online. Most problematic, is the dearth of information regarding Myanmar’s food. For an outsider, it is hard to imagine what kind of food is eaten in this country. Spicy? Sweet? Oily? Dry? For many people, cuisine is the first step in to the heart of the country’s soul. This month’s feature is Mohana Gill’s MyanPrice : 32,500 Ks mar: Cuisine, Culture, and Customs which places special emphasis on understanding Myanmar culture through an understanding of the country’s cuisine. What makes this book authentic is the knowledge Mohana has infused into her recepies through the 20 years of living in the country. The book’s first half features a straight look into 6 different areas of Myanmar. These divisions were not chosen based on their popularity of travel, but rather their significance to Mohana. Following the first half is the real meat of the book: Mohana’s recipes. Each dish is beautifully photographed with meticulous detail given to its preparation. If you are looking for a book that showcases the ethnic diversity of Myanmar, through the lens of cuisine, look no further than Mohana Gill’s Myanmar: Cuisine, Culture, and Customs. Your taste buds will thank you later. 150 Dhamazedi Road, Bahan Tsp
