TOBA RESTAURANT CAFE
BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA WHAT IT IS As if the Yaw Min Gyi Quarter wasn’t already satisfying our need for delicious little shops and cafes, up springs yet another sumptuous eatery option in this quickly evolving area of town. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, TOBA serves Indonesian and Indo-Chinese inspired dishes whenever your craving for the sweet and spicy arises. With two well-seasoned Indonesian chefs running the kitchen and ingredients imported directly from Singapore and Indonesia, the flavors popping out of this kitchen are wonderfully authentic, and you can get them any time of the day or night. Truly, the quality of food here is both homey and exotic, hitting the right notes of savoury and invigorating, perfect for those indecisive hours when you can’t pick between adventure and comfort. ATMOSPHERE One might walk right past this unassuming little restaurant without ever knowing what he or she was missing. Its ground floor opens out into the street—convenient for those dropping in during lunch (or maybe stumbling in late at night) for a quick bite. For those wanting something a little more cozy, head upstairs where some cushioned floor seating makes a dinner for two or a party for twenty a lot more enjoyable. Also, there seems to be fewer mosquitos up there. The décor is modest— nothing to get excited about. But let’s be honest, you’re not here for the luxe dinnerware or contemporary artwork; you’re here for the food, and THAT doesn’t disappoint. RECOMMENDATION Almost everything that came out of the kitchen impressed. At the top of that list was their Lotek Salad (1,800Ks)—a mix of shredded fresh vegetables tossed in a spicy peanut-based dressing, topped with a healthy portion of krupuk (fried crackers). It’s bold, zingy flavor contrasted well with the lightness of its main ingredients. Their Sapi Rendang Padang (3,500Ks), a caramelized beef curry made with chili, lemongrass, and ginger (among several other flavors), nearly stole the show. In fact, order your own bowl and make no plans to share any. Finally, the Nasi Goreng Bakar (literally grilled fried rice) —fried rice rolled and grilled in banana leaves, served with delectably crispy fried chicken (Ayam Goreng)—was a heavenly meal all on its own. Also worth trying: Soup Buntut (Oxtail Soup, 3,600Ks), Pisang Kipas (Fried Bananas 1,200Ks), and the Indo-style Avocado Shake (2,200Ks). Their late night menu (10pm-10am) is a pared down selection of curry, rice and noodle dishes. Currently a little limited, its options will expand over the next coming months. Be prepared to try something new while you’re there, since their current menu lists all dishes by their native name and is devoid of any explanation of its ingredients. Hopefully, this too will be augmented in time. PRICE | Dishes fall between 1,200Ks and 4,900Ks.
coupon of the week 1 tasting portion of choice of Tahu Gerus, Tahu Isi or Tahu Telor Istimewa to each original coupon. Redeemable from 12pm to 8pm. No min spending required. While stock last.
Till 1st week of august TOBA RESTAURANT-CAFE No-15 Nawaday St., Dagon Tsp, Yangon | +95 9 30223875 Open 24/7 (Late Night Menu: 10pm-10am)
MYANMORE RECOMMENDS
OCULUS Tim Russell (Brenton Thwaites) is getting out of the mental hospital because he’s finally been cured. He no longer believes an evil mirror possessed his parents when he was a child, leading to his father (Rory Cochrane) murdering his mother (Katee Sackhoff) before being shot down by little Timmy’s own hand. He knows better now it seems, and agrees that his dad simply went crazy. His sister Kaylie (Karen Gillan) has said so all along and went on with her life, find a career, and fall in love. But when she picks him up Kaylie makes it clear that the two of them can now put the revenge she’s been planning into action. She’s found the mirror, she’s tracked its deadly history across the centuries, and she has a foolproof plan to prove to the world that their parents were victims of this cursed piece of glass. The only problem with a foolproof plan is that somebody has to play the fool, and in this case it just may be Kaylie. Read more at Film School Rejects: http://filmschoolrejects.com/reviews/oculus.php
