MYANMORE RECOMMENDS

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (3D) It’s difficult to tell what audience director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) and producer Michael Bay had in mind while bringing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back to the big screen. Is it the kids drawn to the hit animated Nickelodeon reboot or the middle-aged crowd looking to reconnect with yet another thing they loved in their youth? The filmmakers never came up with a resolution, which is why we have a reported $125 million effects parade with a crippling identity problem. The movie doesn’t even seem that committed to its titular stars: The fussily art-directed, needlessly creepy-looking reptiles stay on the outskirts of the film for biblical gaps, leaving put-upon TV reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) and lovelorn sidekick Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) to shoulder the burden ofTurtles‘ dumb-as-nunchucks ransom plot, which finds evil blade fetishist Shredder trying to unleash a chemical attack on New York. Turtles contains a spectacular car chase down a snow-capped mountain that recalls Bay’s hyper-adrenalized highway stunts in Bad Boys II, and it opens with a bravura comics-inspired credit sequence. Those toobrief thrills only shine a harsher light on the film’s laborious pacing and cringeworthy one-liners spilling from the maws of the ninja teens. Still, it can revel in this tiny victory: In the battle between Bay-produced jumbles of ’80s kid nostalgia, Turtles is head-and-shell better than Transformers. Cowabunga? COCOON CAFE & BAR

BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA ON AUGUST 25, 2014 WHAT IT IS Rooftop patios have an enduring charm about them that always seems to pique one’s attention. Is it the temporary sensation of escape that attracts us to these lofty verandas? Or perhaps it’s the laissez-faire attitude that one tends to imbibe almost through osmosis—puffing on a hookah while the breeze slowly whisks away your stress and beneath you a city flounders in chaos. The horns are distant. The mad dogs of summer further still. And for a moment it seems that what you have around you—where you are—is a paper thin shell that screens you from the world congested: a cocoon. ATMOSPHERE Situated on the 9th floor, this establishment gives plenty of room for your mind to breath. It has a classic, almost antiqued feel that seems effortless. The indoor and outdoor areas bleed into one another yet are also distinctly separate. The bar area is perfect for those wanting to hole up between four walls, but a short walk through a hallway reveals a dining room missing its second, third, and fourth walls. Cross that imaginary line and you’ll be in their canopied terrace. There are a few seating areas that skirt the exterior of the restaurant, but they seem cramped. If you’re looking for another beautiful view of Shwedagon Pagoda at night, go elsewhere. It isn’t spectacular from this vantage point. RECOMMENDATION: Cocoon takes typical Myanmar beer station dishes and elevates them to a simpler, cleaner, more appealing level. The flavors are more distinct and the dishes lack what can only be described as that street food skeeze. Our favorite was the Grilled Pork Neck (4,500Ks), which was served with fresh mint and a tart and zingy dipping sauce that pepped up the heavier flavor of the grilled meat. Don’t skip on the mint either; it’s not a garnish. We also liked their Steamed Mutton Leg (6,000Ks), which was more of a savory garlic and onion curry dish served with a side of white bread. They have a large menu that also includes some western options; stick to what you know they know and you won’t be disappointed. RECOMMENDED COCKTAIL: We tried a few and finally found this one: The Texas Tea. A mix of tea, rum, Cointreau, sugar, lime, and orange juice, it somehow produced a light and refreshing coffee flavor. Very strange, but also very enjoyable. On a side note, our drink orders did take a long time to arrive – almost as long as our food. PRICE | Dishes are about 5,000Ks each, and cocktails about 2,500Ks. Address | 22/24 Shinsawpu Road and corner of Baho Road, 9th Floor | 01 500 863 | Mon - Sun: 10:00 am - 12:00 am
