Let’s Go Loco! is a partnership between Grand Royal, featuring their Special Reserve Whisky, and MYANMORE, with the intention to do this the local way. You can’t get anymore local than their GR’s whisky, which is a local all-time favourite. Add local food from at Super Win, which is another favourite local joint, and you get Let’s Go Loco! This will be the start of a series of monthly get-togethers where we introduce different venues and food to complement beverages from Grand Royal. So there, let it not be said we don’t love ya. THIRIPYITSAYA SKY BISTRO BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA WHAT IT IS: Sky Bistro is located on the top floor of the Sakura Building, across from the Sule Shangri-La Hotel. It has a diverse selection of international dishes and one of the best panoramic views in the city. If you’re lucky, you might catch a lightning storm or two along the horizon while a crimson-saffron glow bathes the sky across the river. ATMOSPHERE: Floor-to-ceiling windows encircle the room and provide ample room for outdoor viewing. Diners may choose seating with South facing views of Sule Pagoda and across the river or North facing toward the Shwedagon Pagoda. I suggest the river view. The lush green landscape is a nice change of pace. A lounge area divides these two areas, and in the evenings live music accompanies your dinner. Sadly, the lounge area is also the smoking area, so if you want to enjoy the views without second-hand smoke you’ll have to get a table. You might also have to deal with the occasional visitor snapping photos of the scenery over your shoulder. RECOMMENDATION: Our favorite item on their menu was the Grilled Butterfish. Its served on a bed of steamed spinach and garnished with a tomato coulis sauce. While I would have enjoyed something lighter and more pronounced than the spinach, the fish itself was enjoyably sweet and buttery without being too fishy, and the coulis sauce harmonized well. We also enjoyed their Enchiladas. Though they were definitely not traditional enchiladas, they satisfy my occasional Mexican food craving. The shredded chicken mix of cumin, tomato, and cheese is served with a nice dollop of sour cream. All that’s missing is the rice and refried beans. Finally, the Bistro Pork Chop is served with an interesting ginger and orange sauce that was perfect, or bitter, or too sweet. The flavors kept dancing and moved with every bite. Slightly maddening if you’re trying to figure out if you like it or not. In the end I smeared some blue cheese from their Cheese Plate and called it even. PRICE Main Course dishes run between 6,000Ks and 17,000Ks. They also have a new wine menu with European wines starting from 30,00Ks to 60,000 per bottle.
