new opening LA TARTINE
WHAT IT IS Tartine is a French word, meaning an open-faced sandwich, usually one with a rich or fancy spread. The La Tartine bakery located on the ground floor of Pearl Condo, thankfully, serves more than that. Opened in late February, it’s Yangon’s only French bakery and has been gaining popularity judging from the crowd that fills up daily. Serving freshly-prepared sweet and savoury baked treats, it also supplies to hotels and other venues in Yangon. It’s also currently the only place to get the fair-trade French coffee Malongo. ATMOSPHERE La Tartine is a cosy bakery with seating options indoors and outdoors. This can be attractive to some but can also be quite claustrophobic for others. The mix of colours from the red walls, black-and-white old-school flooring and basic wooden seats compliments the baked goodies on display. Each display seems more mouth-watering than the other. It’s another good option for a relaxing coffee break or a quick take-away. RECOMMENDATION It’s quite impossible to decide on just one treat at La Tartine. The croissants – butter and almond – are made from Poitou Charentes butter and had just come out of the oven when we arrived. My French friend explained that the butter from that region is touted to be the best butter in France. She swears the almond croissant is as good as the ones back home. The cheesecake is moist, smooth and didn’t have the artificial taste found in some cheesecakes. The 3-chocolate crisp cake is actually two cakes with a crunchy centre. and has a taste of real chocolate – not too sweet as most cakes go with the two layers melting and crunchy at the same time in your mouth. It’s light even though we know it’s very rich. We couldn’t resist the macaroons; they were calling our names ever so softly, “Eat me! Eat me!” How can one say no to such a gentle persuasion? PRICES Prices range from 1,500Ks (butter croissant) to 9,000ks (3-chocolate crisp cake) A box of 6 macaroons are for 7,000Ks. LA TARTINE Pearl Condo A, Corner of Kabar Aye Pagoda rd & Sayarsan rd Bahan Tsp, Yangon Tel: 01 557 448 Ext: 858 OPENING HOURS Mon – Fri: 7am to 8pm Sat & Sun: 8am to 8pm
