This postcard is of the once prosperous De Souza Pharmacy building. This building is still standing in Mahabandoola Road (old address was 475 Dalhousie Street), just west of Sule Pagoda. It is now occupied by the Accounts Division of Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications. The postcard was printed before 1964 as the Maung Ko & Bros Watch showroom is still shown. On the opposite side would be the A Swe Daw watch showroom. The signs on the De Souza building read, "You can rely on De Souza for the genuine medicine.” Rangoon was once home to a community of Goans (from then Portuguese Goa). De Souza Pharmacy was one of the biggest Goan businesses in the city. Unfortunately the portico on the building was demolished. There was a dental clinic run by Mr de Souza in the building where my parents use to take me for my dental check-ups or treatment up till 1963; after which Mr de Souza had to close his clinic and leave the country. At the time Dr/Mr de Souza's dental clilnic was the best in Yangon and was very smart. Credit: Harry Hpone Thant & Bob Percival http://opening-up-burma-travel.info/

KITCHEN INSPIRATION

review

l'opera

ITALIAN RESTAURANT AND BAR BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA WHAT IT IS: Chef Massimiliano delighted us one afternoon with a sampling of some of the dishes that can be found in his new menu at L’Opera. He’s trimmed it down, spruced it up, and injected a little bit of his own flair to keep the options authentic and up-to-date. With new, exciting places popping up almost every week, this might be just what is needed to keep this institution young and relevant. ATMOSPHERE: If you haven’t spent an evening dining in the lakeside garden at L’Opera, do yourself a favor and add that item onto your Yangon to-do-list. The ambience alone is worth an hour of my time—golden light peeking from behind lacquered umbrellas with soft music plucked from an acoustic six-string. It is spacious and serene, and if you’ve read my reviews then you know I’m a sucker for jazzy little scenes like this one. With the rains continuing to wane, now is the right time to ditch those cluttered indoor eateries and spend some time in the fresh air. RECOMMENDATION: Chef Massimiliano entertained us with quite an array of food—more than we can possibly fit into this review. At the top of our list was the Polpo Fritto su Crema di Fagioli e Rucola (Fried Octopus served on a bed of sweet creamed bean and topped with rocket and lemon). This hot appetizer was the most surprising thing I’ve tasted in months, not to mention impressive to look at. Who doesn’t want to feel like a brute knifing into a curled sprawl of purple tentacles? I do. A crispy outer skin screens a soft, salty interior that somehow yields to the sour lightness of the rocket and lemon. The sweetness of the creamed bean loiters around at the end, teasing you for another bite. Our next favorite was the Risotto agli Asparagi e Zola (Asparagus and Zola Blue Cheese Risotto). Creamy and sharp on the palate, the addition of the blue cheese made this dish a little edgier than your typical savory risotto. Lastly, the Costolette d’Agnello con Mandorle e Semi di Finocchio (Grilled breaded lamb chops with almonds and fennel seeds) brought out a more playful attitude for this meat dish, the almonds and fennel highlighting the sweeter notes of the lamb. PRICE: Dishes range from $15-$30 No 62D, U Htun Nyein St, Mayangone Tsp | 01 66 55 16, 09 7303 07 Open daily from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm
