A STATE OF
BRIGHT HEALTH
WHAT’S YOUR STATE OF HEALTH? No matter who you are, health is the most important aspect of your life. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The first wealth is health.” The pursuit of health is one that is deeply individual, and it is dependent on so many factors — age, income, access, heredity, upbringing and of course, geography. Fortunately for you, you live in a state like Colorado, where access and attention to health are priorities. But ultimately, it still comes down to your individual journey. As you navigate that course, medical evidence shows that some health fundamentals can help guide your way to physical and emotional well-being, including: • Food choices • Exercise • Stress management • Sleep
TOM VALDIVIA, M.D. CHIEF HEALTH OFFICER BRIGHT HEALTH
• Financial wellness Last but not least — and something I’m particularly passionate about — is your connection to the key individuals who can support your journey toward a state of brighter health. One of the most important is your relationship with your primary care provider. This connection not only improves your health, but also lays the groundwork for long-term emotional and physical well-being. As a doctor, I know how meaningful this relationship can be. At Bright Health, we are so passionate about this relationship that we built a health insurance company to strengthen and fortify it. We hope that we can be a partner as you build your health community — helping you form a strong relationship with a primary care provider who knows your health needs backward and forward, and giving you resources to maximize all of Colorado’s healthy lifestyle possibilities. In fact, that’s one of the reasons we created Bright Life, a magazine that highlights the ways you can live your healthiest life in the Centennial State. We look forward to helping you make your journey to health just a little bit brighter.

5-MINUTE SILENT MEDITATION. Use Mindfulness Daily (available in the App Store) or another online resource if you need a guide.
Spend the remaining time checking out YOGA APPS on your smartphone. YOGAmazing, Pocket Yoga and Yoga Studio are all terrific resources that help you fit in yoga, no matter your schedule.
REVERSE LUNGE 30 seconds on, 10-second rest
UPRIGHT ROWS 15 reps, 10-second rest

ARMS & TORSO: PUSHUPS Starting from a high plank, focus your eyes about a foot in front of you and lower yourself toward the floor until your elbows are at 90 degrees.

Q&A WITH
AMELIA EARHART
A Coloradan to her core, Denver’s Amelia Earhart knows what it means to live a BRIGHT LIFE. Between reporting traffic for a local TV station, circumnavigating the globe by plane, and maintaining an active lifestyle, staying healthy takes some serious planning. Find out how she lives the Colorado life to the fullest. Sit back, relax and enjoy the read; Amelia is about to take off …
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE HEALTHY? Health isn’t about trendy workouts, Instagram photos of healthy meals or maintaining a certain weight; health is about creating a joyful life. When I am joyful, I take care of my body; I cook colorful, nutritious meals; and I make myself a priority. I used to think being “healthy” would make me happy — now I realize that being happy drives me to create my own health. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO STAY FIT? I live in downtown Denver, so the Cherry Creek bike path is a favorite way to get out and enjoy a workout, whether on bike or on foot. Longboarding at Wash Park is a social way to burn some calories while taking in the beauty of our community. WHERE’S YOUR GO-TO COLORADO ESCAPE? lying a small airplane into Telluride for an afternoon of F hiking and a great meal is my idea of a perfect escape. We live in a state filled with the kind of views that most will only see in a photograph … Get out and explore, get lost and create a story that’s worth telling! After flying around the world, Colorado is still the most intriguing place I’ve been. WHAT HEALTHY MEALS DO YOU LIKE TO COOK? Avocado EVERYTHING. I’m not a big salad person, so a big wok full of veggies like squash, zucchini, snap peas and carrots with toasted sesame oil is a filling, inexpensive meal. A house favorite is a modified pad thai made with veggie noodles and peanut butter lime sauce.
WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE COLORADANS TO START LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE? In Colorado, we are surrounded by active, adventurous, outdoorsy people. My advice is this: Don’t be ashamed of being a beginner! Ask a friend to take you on their favorite bike ride or take a level one group class. Chances are, plenty of other people are feeling the same thing you are. Being vulnerable about your nerves will allow you to connect with others. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO RELAX? HOW DO YOU FIND ZEN? I n the air. For me, the sky is where I feel most at home. Soaring in the cirrus clouds on a beautiful fall day over the foothills of Denver is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. I collect my thoughts; I plan for the future. When I’m in the air, I remind myself that anything is possible with a solid flight plan. WITH SUCH A BUSY SCHEDULE, HOW DO YOU FIND TIME TO STAY ACTIVE? When my alarm goes off at 2:45 a.m. to head to work, my first thought is SNOOZE! My second thought, however, is that I am so fortunate to have an incredible career where I get to help our city get excited about planning their day. It’s my personal mantra: The second thought is always yours. Our minds can slip into the path of least resistance pretty easily. Our willingness to have a joyful perspective is a game-changer. This attitude keeps me moving when a nap would be so much easier.

SO, WHAT’S YOUR PLAN? AN HSA PLAN MAY BE A GREAT FIT FOR YOU. YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE PRETAX MONEY INTO AN ACCOUNT THAT NEVER EXPIRES, AND USE THAT MONEY TO PAY FOR HEALTHCARE EXPENSES.
I know or can estimate how much I’ll spend on healthcare and want to be able to plan my healthcare spending.
I’m under 30 and looking to spend less for my monthly premium.
DEPENDING ON HOW FREQUENTLY YOU NEED MEDICAL CARE, EITHER A BRONZE OR SILVER PLAN MAY BE A GREAT FIT FOR YOU.
I want a plan with lower premiums that still offers well-rounded coverage.
WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU IN A HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN?
IF YOU WANT PROTECTION FOR THE JUSTIN-CASE FACTOR AND AREN’T LOOKING TO APPLY A TAX SUBSIDY, A CATASTROPHIC PLAN MAY BE A GREAT FIT FOR YOU.
I think I may qualify for a tax subsidy (financial assistance to lower monthly costs). More than 50,000 Coloradans who have qualified for a tax subsidy did not claim it.
LEARN MORE AT BHP.SHORT.CM/AFFORDABLE-HEALTHCARE.
I want to keep my premiums as low as possible.
I’m willing to pay a higher premium for a plan with comprehensive coverage and low out-of-pocket costs.
How much medical care do you expect you will need?
How often do you or your family plan to see the doctor or use prescriptions?
Not a lot. I just want to be prepared for the unexpected.
I know that I/my family will see the doctor a few times each year.
A BRONZE PLAN MAY BE A GREAT FIT FOR YOU. THESE PLANS PROVIDE BASIC COVERAGE IF YOU DON’T EXPECT TO NEED A LOT OF MEDICAL CARE.
10
Silver? Gold? Bronze? HSA? Huh? When you’re shopping for health insurance, navigating the plans — and the terminology — can be overwhelming. Here’s a super-simple guide to help you decide which type of plan is best for you.
A few times each year
A SILVER PLAN MAY BE A GREAT FIT FOR YOU. SILVER PLANS HAVE AFFORDABLE MONTHLY PREMIUMS AND MODERATE COPAYS.
Frequently
A GOLD PLAN MAY BE A GREAT FIT FOR YOU. GOLD PLANS PROVIDE THE LOWEST OUTOF-POCKET COSTS.

MOUNT ELBERT
It’s easy to overlook this small town just 30 miles from the New Mexico border. Be sure to soothe your muscles at Pagosa’s famous hot springs.
Nestled between Grand Junction and the Grand Mesa National Forest, Palisade is a place ripe for the picking. The town has become synonymous with peaches, highlighted during the annual Peach Festival in the middle of August. Head to one of the several wineries for a glass (or two) of red wine to keep your heart healthy.
If you’re going to scale a 14er, do it like you mean it. Mount Elbert sits as the highest point in Colorado and the second-highest mountain in the lower 48. HEALTH Let’s face it. At one time or another, we’ve all asked ourselves, “Did I take my pill today?” In fact, according to Papatya Tankut, R.Ph., vice president of pharmacy affairs for CVS Health, forgetting to take a prescription — or neglecting to take a medication — is one of the most common mistakes people make.
THE CURE FOR YOUR PRESCRIPTION PAINS
Whether you’re the forgetful type, or sticking with a drug regimen is a daily struggle, here are three tips to master your medication management. STICK TO THE PLAN. According to Tankut, even if you experience no symptoms from a chronic disease, like high blood pressure, or you feel great before you finish a course of antibiotics, your medication still serves an important purpose — keeping you healthy.
LEVERAGE TECH. Download the CVS Pharmacy mobile app, which lets you customize reminders and set up missed dosage notifications.
TO PCP OR NOT TO PCP Selecting a primary care provider (PCP) is just one more step you have to take when choosing a health insurance plan, right? Wrong. Building this foundational relationship is essential to creating a lifetime of health. In fact, here are three key reasons it’s important to find a PCP you love, from Robert Gin, M.D., a partner physician at Littleton Pediatric Medical Center.
18
ASK YOUR PHARMACIST. Ask this important member of your healthcare team how your prescription impacts you; when you better understand your medication’s role, you’re more likely to take it.
YOUR PCP CAN GROW WITH YOU. You know that one friend who has known you forever and understands all your quirks? Think this … but with your medical history. These providers develop a relationship with you that grows over time. YOUR PCP IS THE QUARTERBACK of your healthcare team. Because your PCP understands your medical history and needs, he or she is best suited to help you find medical specialists when you have a need. YOUR CHILD’S PCP IS A PARTNER AND TEAMMATE. They say “it takes a village.” Your child’s pediatrician is a collaborative colleague with medical expertise about all of childhood’s stages.
