Why do we hang a stocking up over the fireplace, or at the end of the bed?
The reasons are a little lost in the mists of time and storytelling. However, it’s believed to originate from the story of Saint Nicholas, who wanted to help a poor family with three daughters. He threw three bags of gold coins through their window, as he knew that their father would not accept charity. One of the bags of coins landed in a stocking, hanging to dry by the fire. Gold coins (chocolate ones sadly) still appear in stockings today.
