ummit Restaurant & Bar presents culinary delights from Brisbane Lookout Mt Coot-Tha where from the open front deck, lunches are as lively or long-standing as you like. Stunning at night, the scenic view is just as dazzling during daylight hours. Between appetisers and mains, the eyes wander across the iconic cityscape to as far as the bays and beyond. A mere sevenminute drive from the City centre and adjacent to the hustle and bustle, Brisbane Lookout is an urban tonic. And to suit our active lifestyle, Summit presents a menu that offers an array of adventures. With a focus on fresh seasonal produce and flavoursome dishes, the express menu offers light options for those on-the-go, or comforting selections to linger over. The panoramic restaurant presents onecourse, two or three; all pleasing to the palate, the eye and the Ted Baker clutch. From the menu, Executive Chef Sam McCrystal pursues a Modern Australian approach, commencing with the mixed entrée plate just to get the taste buds working. Options of spiced pork and glass noodle spring rolls, chilli lime syrup with zucchini and sweet corn fritter and cucumber tzatiki, or a demitasse of

house soup refreshes the palate for the foodie journey ahead. For seafood fans, pavé of Atlantic Salmon with potato and fennel gratin, green pea and leek with lemon butter sauce, or aromatic crab cakes covered in panko crumb with daikon, miso coleslaw and wasabi aioli serve as light and restoring dishes. The richness of the duck and porcini terrine with a continental salad, sweet mustard dressing, gherkins and toasted ciabatta is full on the palate, or grilled Moroccan chicken with Lyonnaise potatoes, spiced pumpkin, vine tomato and minted yoghurt keeps taste buds popping. For those with a partiality for the rustic, pan-fried potato gnocchi with semi-dried tomatoes, parsley cream and shaved Parmesan hits the sweet spot. Sweet-tooths will be indulged with the choc fudge ice cream sandwich, old school caramel tart or

homely hummingbird loaf rounding off this midday repast. With Queensland’s eternally sunny subtropical weather the perfect backdrop for this interurban noontide expedition, Summit Restaurant & Bar takes lunch to new heights and paces.

Winter Drinking

Beer with Matt Kirkegaard

Cider with Marty Keetels

Wine with David Bone

A

s the weather starts to cool, the foods we eat start to change and ‘hearty’ starts creeping into descriptions. The same is true for our beers. The light-flavoured, highly-chilled lagers of summer give way to beers with a touch more body, well-suited to the cooler months.

W

inter in Brisbane is our chance to throw on that favourite winter coat and take refuge in a warm pub or restaurant. Dry ciders are a perfect accompaniment to hearty meals of winters passed. I’ve chosen three ciders that hark from some of Australia’s best cider regions.

W

A presenter, educator and media commentator, Matt Kirkegaard is passionate about beer and is one of the few independent beer educators and advocators in Australia.

Marty Keetels is the founder and festival director of Beer InCider Experience. He is a cider nut who created a festival celebrating the quality and range of ciders in Australia.

A local personality and genuine lover of wine, David Bone is a leader in the education and drinking of good drops through Cuttings Wine.

inter is coming - all three weeks of it in the Sunshine State. Our red wine weather period is relatively brief, so take advantage of this and drink as much red wine as possible while Queenslanders wear their one jumper. I have picked a couple of highlights that range from light, lifted to force majeure in a glass.

Return of the Dread Little Creatures, Fremantle WA 7.2%

Somerset Still Small Acres Cider, Orange NSW 8%

2012 Ocean Eight Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula VIC 13.2%

If you don’t like dark beers, still give this a try. This Little Creatures is big at 7.2% ABV, but rich with flavours of liquorice, chocolate and coffee - and a touch of roast.

As the name suggests, this is an English style of cider. Freshly-cut green apples, a beautiful acidity and a wonderful bone dry finish. Enjoy this amazing cider with rabbit stew or mum’s Sunday roast.

This is a particularly fragrant drop bursting with cherry and violets. It shows depth of flavour and a subtle earthy character with a beautiful silky texture unique to a well-made Pinot Noir.

Vintage Ale Coopers. Adelaide SA 7.5%

Cloudy Cider Young Henrys, Sydney NSW 4.6%

2012 d’Arenberg ‘d’Arry’s Original’ Shiraz/Grenache, McLaren Vale SA 14.5%

An annual release by our oldest family-owned brewery, this is another winter warmer at 7.5% ABV - but full bodied - and perfect when paired with blue cheese.

Known for their beers and hipstercool beer cave off Enmore Road, Newtown’s Young Henrys has created a creamy, tart and freshtasting apple cider. Match this creamy cloudy cider to seafood risotto or bouillabaisse.

The 2012 is stellar with beautiful medium weight and some savoury tannin. The fruit flavours are blackberries, with rhubarb and spices too. This is a perfect balance between the sweet and savoury and a great value wine on the market.

21 Feet 7 Inches Porter Newstead Brewing, Brisbane, QLD 5.2%

Co-Op Organic Apple Cider Faire Ferments, Goulburn Valley VIC 5.5%

2012 Dutschke ‘St Jakobi Vineyard’ Shiraz, Barossa Valley SA 14.8%

Coffee and mocha, raisins and even a little smoke in this classical porter – as a style an older relative of the stout. Pair with oysters.

Made in partnership with Alkira Organic Farms, this wonderfully fruity apple cider has a medium acidity and a dry finish. Enjoy the full flavour of this terrific cider with a pork stir-fry.

This wine is sourced from a tiny 32 rows of vineyard planted by Wayne’s uncle in 1975. This is a big wine, generous and old -school. Blackberry, coffee and cedar, it’s a big Barossan bear hug for the mouth.

“THERE ARE NO FRILLS ABOUT FONZIE ABBOTT. WE’VE JUST GOT GREAT QUALITY BEANS”

DAN PAPPAS IS FAMILIAR WITH GROWING UP IN THE HOSPITALITY BUSINESS AND AS THE DIRECTOR OF FONZIE ABBOTT, HE CREDITS HIS LOVE FOR SURFING AND COFFEE WITH THE BIRTH OF HIS BRISBANEBASED ESPRESSO BAR.

F

onzie Abbott basically came about because I didn’t like working,” Dan says. “My family was always involved in hospitality, but I enjoyed the coffee side of things more. I really loved surfing and wanted to travel, so I thought I’d combine everything together and try to surf in every country that had good coffee.” Chasing waves and beans in locations like Indonesia, Hawaii and Central America solidified Dan’s dream of bringing exceptional coffee back home. “There are no frills about Fonzie Abbott. We’ve just got great quality beans,” Dan points out.

He also credits the success of his James Street Espresso Bar to his staff. “It’s about a simple friendly handshake and like-minded people,” he states. “We enjoy being serious in business, but not too serious with life.” Operating a genuine boutique coffeehang gives Dan the opportunity to open his second location to the public with a roaster in Albion. “The Fox Street roastery will mainly be a showroom for our specialty coffee,” Dan says. “The Espresso Bar will be there where the guys will be roasting, and there’ll be food offerings.” But what really sets Fox Street apart is that every second Saturday, customers can book in for a twenty-minute slot to roast their own beans and create their own blend. “If people don’t want to be as hands-on,” Dan points out, “the boys can do it while they wait and enjoy a free coffee.” While Fonzie Abbott will continue as Brisbane’s go-to place for top coffee,

Dan says he intends to make his mark as a boutique venue. “It’s about long-term quality and great service,” Dan outlines. “I only serve what I want to drink and I’ll keep trying to find my perfect blend.” While Dan continues to make plans for Fonzie Abbott, he says the Fox Street Roastery is shaping up to be something special. “Come in,” Dan invites. “Enjoy the coffee and spread the love we have for Fonzie Abbott.” Read more online: mycitylife.com.au

FALLS CREEK IS A MAGICAL WINTER WONDERLAND AND TRUE SKI-IN SKI-OUT EUROPEAN STYLE VILLAGE, RIGHT IN THE HEART OF THE HUME REGION IN NORTH EASTERN VICTORIA.

T

he best part of Falls Creek is the ease of accessibility out of South East Queensland. Surprisingly, Falls Creek is the closest ski resort to Brisbane. Catch a flight from Brisbane into Melbourne or Albury, hire a car for scenic driving and maybe add a sneaky stop at a winery on the way while exploring Ned Kelly country. Arriving at the magical resort of Falls Creek is quite the experience, particularly with the oversnow-taxi transporting holiday-goers to their various apartments, chalets and hotels around the snowbound village.

Of course, the main purpose for visiting Falls Creek is the skiing. For mid-week snow holidays, a full five days on the snow is ideal.

I MyCityLife

Refresher lessons get the ski legs back into action. For beginners, daily lessons are a must with ski school available, featuring specialised learn-to-ski programmes. There are plenty of snow activities on offer, from night shows with fireworks, a snow play park, snowshoeing, snow tubing, tobogganing and bocce. Also try the snow mobile tour and experience the Bogong High Plains - the views are spectacular. For the sunset tour, make sure to dress warm. Experienced snow-goers can catch a helicopter and experience the steep thrills Hotham has to offer – with the same lift pass. A gorgeous ten-minute scenic flight to the heart of Hotham with challenges on some serious terrain can all be organised from the resort. Or just go for lunch. Falls Creek’s charm and character is a winner, no matter the skiing or boarding ability. The true magic of Falls Creek Resort means skiing during the day and dining at night with over 35 options to choose from for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in between ski runs. BEYOND THE BEACHES OF THE SUNSHINE COAST, A WORLD OF ORGANIC PRODUCE, LUXURY RETREATS AND SOPHISTICATED TWO-HATTED RESTAURANTS WAIT WITH ANTICIPATION.

A Photographer: John Reyment

s General Manager of Spicers Clovelly Estate and Executive Chef of two-hatted The Long Apron, Cameron Matthews has successfully drawn attention to the Sunshine Coast as a premium destination. With a focus on relaxed luxury, Spicers is about the best of creature comforts and tranquility, which Cameron works tirelessly with his team to present. “I’d like to think we’ve bought some recognition to the Sunshine Coast,” Cameron asserts, “particularly to the people who have deserved it. It was amazing produce there to start with, and we’ve bought that to the forefront. As a community, we’ve done it all together.” What makes The Long Apron particularly unique comes from where they draw upon their inspiration, which is the very individual and unique local region of the Sunshine Coast itself. Every dish is exclusively crafted from the region using Cameron’s cooking techniques that promote flavoursome foods, naturally. “It’s very much about the producers and the people,” Cameron confirms. “We may not get perfect produce but that’s fine. For example, our chicken supply from Walker Farm Foods with nomadic chickens means we get six chickens a week. We’ve designed the dish around the fact

they produce a small amount of chickens - and they’re amazing heritage-bred chickens.” The passion for simple food using premium produce comes from Cameron’s first stint in the kitchen with an Italian family at Victoria’s Simones At Bright. “The most important part is cooking for people because you love to,” Cameron maintains. While Italian techniques are not necessarily united to fine dining, Cameron believes it’s all about cooking for a reason. “Fine dining to me is not about starch and silver and the white gloves,” he declares. “It’s about the quality of service and quality of food. The care from the people who are serving it and producing the food is the essence of fine dining,” Cameron notes. “Take away all the pomp and ceremony and strip it down to what it should be: great food, great local product cooked with the love and care and attention to detail it deserves, by people who care.”

ith his fiery red locks, the restaurant owner, renowned chef and valiant carnivore, particularly shines from the kitchen. Whether it is in his own from La Luna Bistro in Victoria’s North Carlton or on the set, wherever he cooks, the spotlight naturally follows. But surprisingly, Adrian is far more complicated than even he would let on. Behind the quick wit lies a doubleedged mind stropped for business. One of Australia’s top restaurants, popular TV shows and bestselling books aren’t by-products purely based on culinary skills alone. With a cosmopolitan upbringing from an Italian mother and chef Father, it is also his Italian Nonna with her Egyptian-background infusing her cooking that has influenced his approach to food. “I like to cook what I like to eat,” Adrian discloses. “I don’t really like the frothy fancy stuff. I eat it occasionally. It’s just not my bag. I’d much rather kill and cut up a large animal, cut it into little pieces and stuff them into its own intestines.” Only the truly resilient and conditioned will survive the hospitality industry - and succeed. And it is his passion for food with a naturalness to teach that allows him to transcend beyond the status of celebrity chef. As a lover of good food, he takes that extra mile - from aging and smoking his meat to baking his own bread and churning his own butter on-site. “If it’s homemade it’s better,” Adrian declares. “As a chef, that’s what I do. That way, you’re getting a unique experience and something no one else does.”

Photographer: John Laurie

Looking at what he has achieved so far with a new New York-styled bar on the way, there’s certainly plenty to be proud of. “I’ve been able to build something from nothing,” Adrian asserts. “I’ve been around some good people and made some clever decisions. I’ve also made some shit decisions. I’m so lucky, because I knew at a young age cooking was what I wanted to do. I was put on this planet to cook for other people. That’s my gig.”

Lindsay Bennett

ercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane’s director Lindsay Bennett celebrates ten years at its helm this year. “It doesn’t feel like ten,” Lindsay reflects. “It seems like only yesterday we had the first model walk down the runway at the Hilton Hotel.” MBFF Brisbane launched with the intent to put Queensland fashion on the map, filling the void left by the defunct RAQ Fashion Design Awards. “All of a sudden there was a model to launch spring/summer,” Lindsay notes. “The RAQ paved the way for the industry, there’s no doubt about that,” he acknowledges.

Photographer: Ian Golding

The MBFF offers designers the chance to showcase to the media, the industry and local fashion-buying public, all timed to coincide with new summer season drops in stores. The fully-produced fashion show has proven to be a winning formula, seeing the festival outgrow venues while reaching sellout ticket sales. Easton Pearson, Julie Tengdahl, George Wu and Juli Grbac were among the first to show at the launch venue while MBFF has relocated to new homes at City Hall, South Bank and Treasury Casino. This year, the festival lands at the Brisbane Showgrounds’ John Reid Pavilion with an extensive fourday build transforming the space into a venue worthy of the glamorous event. “This year, it’s exciting to come up with something really different,” Lindsay confides. “We’ve made the runway as large as we can with as much seating as possible. It’s a 60m runway – a massive platform for our designers and our models.” Another first this year is the chance to purchase a ticket into the coveted front row of 220 seats – seating normally reserved for major sponsors, celebrities and media. The festivals’ successes are many. “Last year Julie Tengdahl had her best day of trade ever,” Lindsay states. “White Label Noba sold

cover story and approached her to get together. “I wanted to start a band,” Katy remembers. “So Little Birdy was put together. I was only eighteen and I just went with it, gave it everything I had. But I was very young and naïve and had a lot to learn.” Playing to sell-out crowds at concerts throughout Australia was fast-paced and hard work. But when Little Birdy took an indefinite break, Katy needed to keep moving. She decided to challenge herself and head to the easy-going and cultural alternativeness of Brooklyn, New York. “I always wanted to live the cliché New York lifestyle,” she reveals. “I had it on a pedestal in terms of music, so I wanted to experience that for myself.”

FOR A NATURAL MUSICIAN LIKE SINGER-SONGWRITER KATY STEELE, CREATIVITY FLOWS THROUGH HER VEINS. Aly Eveille

W

hile the all-around artistic chick was best known for fronting Australian indie rock band Little Birdy, Katy is now all grown-up and gone solo. With the impending release of her first album, Katy says she is excited to bring new music to the world. “Music is my outlet,” she reveals. “I just sit at the piano and let it fall out. It’s natural for me, even through hard times. That’s why I do it, because I’m meant to do it.”

Katy Steele plays BIGSOUND Live, September 9 - 11, 2015

She was first exposed to music with dad Rick Steele an accomplished blues musician. “Dad had a blues club so my family and I grew up around musicians,” she recalls. “My brother Luke started playing guitar, I started on bass, and my brother Jesse played the drums.” When Katy sang at her brother’s 21st birthday bash in front of guys like Eskimo Joe and Jebediah, guitarist and keys player Simon Leach took to her melodic voice immediately

From the Big Apple, Katy acquired all the educational tools of an artist thirsting to add life experiences to her cache. It was particularly after conquering the tasks of production that Katy would return to Perth to kick-start her solo career. “I had a very interesting time there. It was up and down,” Katy discloses. “I got back from America and was in the family home when a lot of songs came out. Processing those experiences into songs was a pivotal moment for me,” she notes. Creating a solo album was an idea that Katy had been toying with for the past four years and has been a distinctly solitary project. All her experiences and talents have come to the forefront as writer and performer of an album with many stories to tell. “It’s finally at a point where it’s so right, I’m jumping out of my skin with excitement,” she announces. “I’m proud to put something out and I’m excited to be on stage and in my element again.” Katy returns to the stage sooner than expected, with her attendance confirmed for BIGSOUND Live. As Australia’s premier international music conference and artist showcase, BIGSOUND rolls out across Brisbane in September. “I’m really pumped to meet some of the panel speakers coming for BIGSOUND,” Katy reveals. “I’m hoping to have a single released around this time.” She promises her new album will be very rhythmic and percussive, as a combination of all her favourite things. “I just feel like it couldn’t get more me,” Katy notes. “Fans of Little Birdy will be happy because it still combines what I’m all about - a great song. I’m really pumped about taking it out to the world. It’s going to be a global approach to a solo project and I’m excited about the world hearing it.” Read more online: mycitylife.com.au MyCityLife

or the Master Jewellers at LeGassick however, this stereotype couldn’t be any more different. Meet Jodi Phillips and Renee Hudson whose credentials alone are beyond impressive. Jodi has a Bachelor Of Design and Renee is a qualified Jeweller and Gemologist. It is also their unmatched skill in design and craftsmanship that marks them as the most sought-after jewellers in South East Queensland. LeGassick has seen a steady increase in the demand for custom-made pieces across all three of their in-store workshops from Robina Town Centre, Runaway Bay Shopping Village and Hyperdome Shopping Centre. Clients have an almost unlimited choice at LeGassick, where they can select from the incredible range of pieces on exhibition, or create something unique with a Master Jeweller. Their pieces are highly coveted, and it’s not hard to see why. “Women know what women want,” Renee says. Both Master Jewellers agree that while they feel a connection to each piece they create,

they are especially mindful the piece is a reflection of the person who wears it. “Each design needs to balance beauty and comfort,” Renee remarks. “It can sometimes be a challenge to incorporate all the clients’ ideas and still make the pieces wearable.” Despite their overflowing appointment schedules and in-demand diamond engagement ring-makes, the talented ladies are aware that many people may assume they either only sell or make costume jewellery. “They seem surprised when I explain that I actually design and make the pieces they see in the LeGassick window displays.” Renee says, having just completed an incredible diamond halo engagement ring. “I do chuckle,” Jodi states, “when people enter the store and naturally head towards our watchmaker, assuming an older male must be the Master Jeweller. But it doesn’t take clients long to realise that I’m extremely passionate about what I do, and that I can create something really incredible.”

The popularity of custom-made jewellery is growing exponentially for LeGassick. “Clients want something especially made for them and they’re looking for quality - something they’ll have forever,” Renee comments. “At the initial design consultation, I explain how LeGassick hand-select every diamond. It’s such a pleasure to know I work with such quality. LeGassick uphold strict selection-criteria to ensure that only the most beautiful diamonds become LeGassick diamonds,” Renee says. “Clients have confidence in the LeGassick brand and know they are wearing some of the rarest white diamonds on earth.” If you can imagine it, a LeGassick Master Jeweller can create it. “There’s really nothing I can’t or won’t do for a client,” Jodi confirms. On any given day, LeGassick Master Jewellers can be creating a twenty-first birthday present, engagement rings and 60th wedding anniversary gifts. “Being a part of those special moments in our clients lives,” Jodie maintains, “is so rewarding.” Read more online: mycitylife.com.au

TENS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS ARE IN QUESTION WITH THE LABOR GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSED 1AM LOCKOUT, 3AM CLOSE AND NO SHOTS AFTER 12MIDNIGHT. NICK BRABAN, LOCAL HOSPITALIER LEGEND AND CHAIRMAN OF THE VALLEY LIQUOR ACCORD, OUTLINES HIS THOUGHTS.

n response to the new state government’s policy relating to trading hours for licensed premises, businesses, musicians, DJs, patrons and most importantly employees have united to form Our Nightlife Queensland. Our Nightlife Queensland represents people from across the state relying on licensed venues and associated industries for their livelihood and for a good time. We are caterers, bar staff, cleaners, waiters, small business owners, musicians and citizens. We accept that the Palaszczuk Government has been elected with a mandate for action in relation to the safety of patrons inside – and more importantly outside – Queensland nightclubs and bars. We want to work with the Government to find a way to implement the necessary reforms without harming the 7,200 licensed venues in Queensland and their employees.

20

I MyCityLife

We have worked hard over the last seven years with successive governments – particularly Labor – to get the settings right. We believe we are getting it right, and that existing settings can be retained and fine-tuned for better outcomes. We have asked the government to come to the table and talk with us about how to safeguard Queenslanders while also protecting the state’s hospitality industry and workers. It’s been over 100 days since the Palaszczuk Government has been in power and despite countless letters, emails and calls, we are yet to sit down with a single Cabinet Minister - including the Attorney-General - on their key election policies. In Brisbane alone, the nighttime economy is worth half a billion dollars a year. Nearly 50,000 Queenslanders enjoy the state’s nightlife on an average weekend. The overwhelming majority of those people have a very positive experience.

The industry is critical to Queensland’s popularity as a tourist destination, and to Brisbane’s credibility as a modern, progressive “world city”. For all of these reasons, it is imperative that Queenslanders who rely on our nightlife are given a seat at the table, as the future of this important industry is determined.

Work with the government to create meaningful solutions that are best for all Queenslanders. Raise your voice and be heard. OUR NIGHTLIFE QUEENSLAND nightlifeqld.com.au /nightlifeqld

S

ince first jamming in the backyard of John’s garden shed, the three-piece indie pop rock outfit has come a long way in their evolution. While it’s taken a baby, a couple of drummers, a stay in Brooklyn, a dive bar in Morningside, a gig on Rove Live, tours, festivals, awards, a few hit albums, DVDs, EPs and singles, The Grates have stayed true to their arthouse roots. Their unique sound presents vocals cascading between throaty and aerial, overlaid by raw harmonies, layers of guitar and toms and accompanied by flamboyant costumes. It’s a Daliesque-vibe inlaid by a wholesome purity that retains a vintage feel, but is fresh and completely unconventional. “We just happen to be at a stage in our life right now where we are surrounded by a bunch of really good people and it’s been really fun,” The Grates’ frontliner Patience explains. “It felt like we had a couple of

years being isolated in creating music.” Their latest album ‘Dream Team’ was recorded under their house across six days and produced by garage god Owen Penglis. It embodies all The Grates stand for: no fuss. “We wanted to go and have a really good experience recording the album,” Patience recalls “We wanted it to be raw and didn’t want it to be overthought. We wanted it to be really native to us. We did everything super dirty. I kept feeling it was really us; really Brisbane.” With their ‘Team Work Makes The Dream Work’ Tour kicking off from The Triffid in August, their return to the stage starts with Splendour in the Grass. “We are Splendour die-hards,” Patience confesses. “It’s really fun to be going back and playing. Writing a set list is always hard but you just put on your best songs - the ones people sing to. Learn all of the lyrics please and sing really loud with me,”

DO YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR AFTER 5 WARDROBE? Mark Ferguson is the director of gentlemen’s bespoke tailoring establishment Wil Valor and believes that a man can never be too beautifully dressed. Mark Ferguson

M

any gentlemen have an understanding of what is expected in the corporate world. A well-fitted suit preferably tailored - white shirt, silk tie and pocket handkerchief. But most men can improve in the transition from the corporate dress level to business and smart casual. This is especially when dressing for a Saturday night dinner or a club or bar. Some men dumb down their look to lighter blue jeans and t-shirt or non-flattering patterned shirt. The inability to consistently dress well can

have negative effects on confidence, but more significantly, can diminish people’s view of you. Dressing well and being stylish is not about being fashionable. Being stylish can consider current trends but is more about an appreciation and knowledge of how to combine different colours, styles and patterns for the best look. To stand out from the crowd and attract the right people, dress well. The need to maintain a better dress level is becoming more important as bars and clubs require you to step up your game. For example, Prohibition Brisbane requires more of a cocktail dress level. The darker the colour, the more formal the garment. For a dress jean, consider a dark blue, indigo or black. Look at collared shirts, but if you must wear a t-shirt, wear it with a jacket. Another

option is a coloured chino, odd jacket and designer sneakers. For the more formal suiting approach, show personality. Wear a suit that doesn’t look like a business suit, and play around with features that can be added such as accessories or shoes. Making the effort will have lasting effects and result in a consistently good impression.

AT JUST 24-YEARS-OLD NICOLE HAGUE HAS FOUNDED A BUSINESS TO TAKE AUSTRALIA BY STORM: ADORE DOLLS PARLOUR.

s the motherland of unique nail art, Adore Dolls has grown from a hobby to a distinctive establishment. Even as a youngster, Nicole was always immersed in everything artistic – from painting to drawing or baking. “It’s what I’m really good at,” Nicole declares. “I used to be a really bad nail biter which prompted my fascination with acrylic nails. I ended up combining my love for nails and art together - and Adore happened.” Standing out in the beauty world hasn’t been difficult for Nicole, with everything around her prompting design ideas. “It might be a certain mood we’re in, different colours we see, or even nature,”

Nicole says. “All of our nails are handpainted with acrylic paint and we also make the nail art decorations ourselves.” Self-expression through nail art is something Nicole loves to help her clients achieve, be it designs from The Simpsons-themed montages to stacked Swarovski masterpieces. While some people have tattoos and others love clothes, Adore Dolls Parlour sets no limits to their nail designs. “You can tell a lot about someone by their nails, whether it’s the shape, length, colour or art,” Nicole asserts. “You can see their personality.” Having added the nails of celebrities from Snoop Dogg to Lorde to her portfolio, Nicole says her ultimate goal is making sure everyone feels like family. “We’re all about customer satisfaction as well as quality and safety protocols,” she claims. “We’re very proud to have hospital-grade sanitisation tools and state-of-the-art ventilation and dust extraction systems.” Currently based in Varsity Lakes on the

She hopes to head north shortly, with Brisbane set as the newest location for a second Adore Dolls Parlour. PAINTING IS BACK,THOUGH YOU MAY NOT RECOGNISE IT AT FIRST WHILE IT EXPERIENCES A MAJOR 21ST CENTURY MAKEOVER.

P

ainting started on cave walls then moved to the walls of man-made structures as frescos, before it leapt onto canvas. As a portable form of painting that enables us to move it from place to place, you can roll it up and take it with you. Painting has remained in that form for almost 1,000 years - until now. A painting uses devices like narrative and perspective to draw us into a twodimensional visual space. In the 1800’s, painting paved the road for the motion picture, which then vastly surpassed the painting’s ability to involve and engage a viewer. It is a much greater challenge for today’s painters to capture and hold onto an audience, when the traditional static format is competing against the highly engaging spectacle of film. Californian artist Matt Sheridan is flipping the game around and using the devices of the motion picture to inform his artwork, bringing painting back into the modern world. Like a motion picture,

Matt’s work is literally composed of hundreds of static images - or in his case, paintings - that have been digitally spliced and formatted to become a cinematic painting-in-motion. No longer static physical objects, Matt’s paintings are dynamic and projected, just like film. They take you on a visual journey and can be scaled to cover entire buildings or shrunk down to be tiny moving paintings on a wall in a house. “All one needs now is a projector,” Matt claims “to turn the very interior or exterior of a space into a theatre, as a layered textured support for painting-in-motion.” Matt’s paintings-inmotion are a mesmerising and abstract visual feast of colour, gesture and movement. The wall is the canvas, and the painting can be turned off at the flick of a switch. It is abstract painting that is as engaging as film, and one of the most exciting leaps in thought since the invention of canvas and stretcher bars. Read more online: mycitylife.com.au

THERE AREN’T ENOUGH PEOPLE WHO KNOW OF THE ARSENAL OF TALENTS EDDIE PERFECT KEEPS UP HIS SLEEVES. SINGER. SONGWRITER. PIANIST. COMEDIAN. PRESENTER. ACTOR.

M

any watch him as Mick Holland from the Australian TV show Offspring, a character who charmed the nation with his fun, likeable, and often dorky larrikin attitude. Or in his presenting role on children favourite, Playschool. But there is much more to Eddie when his passion for music and composition is the driving factor behind his success today. “Everything I do, goes through cycles,” Eddie reflects. “Sometimes, it’s just me and a piano, or me and a laptop. Things come to a point and the pieces come down. That’s how showbiz works. But we keep fighting the good fight.” Work can be so all consuming, the songwriter often finds himself wrapped up in his scores and compositions. “I have to seek the light of day,” he reveals. “Sometimes it’s all sunshine and lollipops. Writing is part of the dark process.”

Dark humour resonates as one of the driving forces behind Eddie’s portrayal of characters and he will have plenty of inspiration to draw upon, starring as The Baker in Harvest Rain Theatre Company’s October production Into the Woods. Here, Eddie will showcase his singing and acting skills, while adding his own wicked twist to a fairy tale where ‘happily ever after’ doesn’t necessarily mean everyone gets what they really want. “I ask myself how dark I can go,” Eddie

outlines. “The more messed up he is to start, the better it is for me to act him. I like to find the secret that propels the character,” Eddie reveals, “the secret the audience doesn’t know but the character does, because it flavours everything and adds a dimension of perplexity. ” The opportunities ahead will allow Brisbane to see more of this man of many talents - and for him to see more of Brisbane. “I love Brisbane,” Eddie affirms. “It has the weather and outdoors of Sydney and the quirky personality of Melbourne. Brisbane has a really strong culture. It’s a really happening and interesting place with a great atmosphere.”

THERE’S REALLY NO WAY TO DESCRIBE A CAR ACCIDENT AS THOSE MOMENTS TO IMPACT REDUCE EVERY SENSE TO THE MOST BASIC OF HUMAN INSTINCTS. AND WITHIN SECONDS, MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS HAVE CHANGED ENTIRE LIVES.

T

he return to reality often brings pain. “On the day of the car accident, the adrenalin’s pumping doctors or lawyers aren’t at the front of your mind,” Michael Kemp of Kemp Law points out. Responsible for up to at least twenty claims per week, Michael and his team deal with the painful side of lifechanging vehicle accidents. “Everyone worries about property damage first,” Michael declares. “When they need to take time off work - perhaps months off - that’s when we step in.”

30

I MyCityLife

With more than 3.8 million cars registered in Queensland*, the risk of motor vehicle accidents is enormous. Common claims are from whiplash injuries, but there are serious road accidents where paraplegic claims, brain injuries and post-traumatic stress are involved. Knowing there is someone who understands what steps to follow makes all the difference. “When people have accidents, they don’t know what to do,” Michael explains. “And when they’re injured and not being paid while physiotherapy or rehabilitation bills are building up, they need help. From reimbursement of rehabilitation to working with WorkCover, we help every step of the way. The money shouldn’t come out of the victim’s pocket,” Michael points out. “99% of these matters don’t go to court and insurers are reasonable and do try to resolve the issue quickly. We make sure there is light at the end of the tunnel.” Ironically, the most important thing of all after an accident tends

“INSURERS ARE REASONABLE AND DO TRY TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE QUICKLY”

to be the last. “Get yourself looked after first,” Michael urges. “Many people ignore the ambulance or don’t see a doctor. Forget about the car – look after you.”

Ita was excited about the campaign having called on everyday Australians to support the cause by donating, enjoying a meal at one of the ALH locations or buying a pink ribbon. “Together we will make a real difference and bring hope for a brighter future,” Ita says, “and better treatment for those diagnosed and living with breast cancer.”

Georgina Lewis was honoured to once again be part of a campaign that looks at changing people’s lives for the better. “This was my fifth year as an ambassador for the ALH Breast Cancer Campaign,” Georgina states, “and I am honoured to be a part of a campaign that makes a difference to women’s lives. I’m always very touched by the support of ordinary Australians and their generosity towards fighting this disease,” Georgina reveals. “Every donation is crucial in helping to fund projects and improve treatments.” One in eight Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Statistically, that is at least one woman in your family. ALH Queensland state manager Stephen Clarke notes many ALH staff are personally affected. “Employees’ loved ones have been touched by breast cancer,” Stephen states. “Many have also been diagnosed and, thanks to medical research, are still here to tell their tales.” PA Research Foundation CEO Damian Topp praises ALH’s contributions, acknowledging they provide their researchers with the crucial funds needed to make an impact. “Everyone involved at ALH should be genuinely proud,” Damian declares. “They are making a very real and positive impact on people’s lives.” Read more online: mycitylife.com.au

Early detection provides the best chance of surviving breast cancer, so it is vital that women be proactive in checking for lumps and other symptoms of breast cancer. Changes to look for include: • A new lump or lumpiness, especially if only in one breast • A change in the size or shape of the breast • A change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion • A nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing • A change in the skin of the breast such as redness or dimpling • Persistent or unusual breast pain Experiencing one or a number of the symptoms above justifies a visit to your General Practitioner.

Dr Bishop says the school also places a strong emphasis on collaborative and self-directed learning. “As educators, we no longer hold the keys to the knowledge kingdom,” she states. “Students today search the internet for information on topics that interest them. They search Google for advice on how to fix a mountain bike. They learn how to alter images in Photoshop through YouTube. When you walk through that LINQ Precinct, not only will you see interdisciplinary, project-based and research-driven teaching and learning, you’ll also see the students shaping and driving the learning process.”

IT IS DIFFICULT TO THINK OF ANY OTHER INDUSTRY THAT HAS HAD MORE FALSE STARTS ACROSS SUCH A LONG PERIOD AS THE ELECTRIC CAR INDUSTRY. IT’S COME A LONG WAY SINCE THE PRODUCTION OF THE FIRST ELECTRIC CAR IN THE EARLY 1880’S, AND THIS TIME, IT SHOULD STICK.

T

here have been new starters in this space over the last few years, with manufacturers like Mitsubishi, Renault and Holden offering what are essentially, weight-reduced versions of existing production cars with an electric motor. BMW on the other hand, has gone to market with a purpose-built vehicle designed from the ground-up unlike anything seen before. Enter the BMW i3 all-electric city car. Replacing a petrol-gulping city commuter with the BMW i3 is a surprising pleasure – particularly for a previous electric sceptic. The problem electric cars have had in the market is their level of compromise when today’s consumers don’t like compromise. The concession is always around that electric-elephant-in-the-room range which, as a result, has coined the term ‘range

anxiety’. But the BMW i3 really has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. There is something to be said when having fifteen kilometres range left in the tank and driving past three perfectly-functioning petrol stations that are of little use or occasion. Experience the epiphany of fit-forpurpose, while silently zipping through traffic. People who need a ute do not buy a sedan. People who need a 4WD, don’t buy a front-wheel drive hatch - although the opposite sometimes applies. And if a car is needed for long haul drives, don’t buy an electric car. The BMW i3 has a range of around 130km which in testing mode, is easily reached. There’s also the advantage of having the range topping i3 Rex, which has a great little motor that acts as a generator to charge the battery and adds at least another

100km to the range. Electric cars are here to stay, and the BMW i3 has proven they can be beautiful, functional, luxurious and sporty. As a luxury city commuter, the BMW i3 is incredibly versatile, exceptionally manoeuvrable and a great talking piece. Read more online: mycitylife.com.au

INTERIOR

Be excused for thinking the interior decor of this car was designed on the set of the movie ‘Oblivion’. It is very much a futuristic lounge room - and beautiful. The seats are slim-line, incorporating a mixture of sustainable materials from fabric to leather and the eucalyptus-wood dash - like a narrow coffee table with tablet screens. The floor is higher than other small cars due to the battery packs, giving this an SUV driver position, while the high roof allows for expanses of glass to enable greater visibility.

EXTERIOR BMW have gone out on a limb with some interesting design elements, including the stubbiness of the vehicle. This is the shortest BMW on the market and looks bigger that a 1 series though not quite as big as the X1 in the metal. There is the dynamic swoop of the rear passenger windows, which are fixed in place. These sit atop a rear-opening ‘suicide door’ which cannot be opened unless the front door is. While it sounds awkward, it all works well. The configuration does away with the need for a B-Pillar - which usually constricts egress in smaller cars - so when the front and rear door are both open, it presents an incredibly practical high and wide opening. Look carefully for a glimpse of the Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic safety cell which is specifically designed for this vehicle.

THE DRIVE Driving this car is a unique experience. The silent start is only evidenced by the simple display of ‘Ready’ on the screen to replace the standard instrument cluster. There is, of course, no engine noise though there is a Jetsons-like quiet whir in the background. The vehicle rides on slim-line 155mm wide tyres with 19” rims, limiting the rolling friction of wider tyres with very little road noise. The higher body gives a higher centre of gravity, contributing to a little body roll in corners, which, if pushing too hard through tight corners, means the experience of an understeer. This is the only negative about the entire car. The acceleration is very impressive, if a little disconcerting, as the 250Nm of torque is available from a standstill. There is no wind-up of a motor: just go. The experience is fantastic. MyCityLife
