editor’s letter
Spring Cleaning This month’s issue of Click magazine is a celebration of all things stylish, featuring all the wonderful wardrobes and beauty tips you’ve come to expect from us this time of the year. Our lead feature, a “Spring Fling”-themed fashion shoot (page 62), is a collaborative piece done in conjunction with Abby Phillips and the good folks over at Memphis Fashion Week. And for the latest on Memphis Fashion Week happenings, check out our calendar on page 56. Speaking of watching the calendar, event season is back full-force here in the MidSouth and we couldn’t be happier, with local stories on everything from Roy Blount, Jr.’s speaking appearance at the Hernando Public Library on April 24 (page 16) to Cory Branan’s Double Decker Arts Fest performance on April 21 (page 13) to the upcoming Taste of DeSoto festivities (page 28). And if you’re not busy this April Fools’ Weekend, be sure to check out the Memphis Comedy Festival. We’ve spotlighted several upcoming acts for the March 31-April 3 event this month (page 85), so be sure to get out there and show the locals some support. In addition, we’ve also devoted some space in this issue to the wonderful Blankets for Barks program, an initiative to keep shelter dogs warm and cozy yearround (page 26). So enjoy this month’s offering of people, places and parties: it’s one of the biggest yet! Happy reading,

ORY BRANAN’S GOT AN EVIL STREAK / AND A way with words that’ll bring you to your knees / Oh he can play the wildest shows and he can sing so sweet. Ben Nichols’ ringing endorsement from Lucero’s 2003 single “Tears Don’t Matter Much” says all you need to know about 41-year-old Southaven native Cory Branan. From his 2002 debut, The Hell You Say, to his joint efforts alongside big names like Jason Isbell and the Thrift Store Cowboys, this Southern storyteller fuses wailing chords of punk rock with soulful old-country structure. This month, Branan returns to his North Mississippi roots to perform at Oxford’s Double Decker Arts Festival.
CM: How did you get started playing music? CB: I grew up alongside it in church my whole life and my family played a lot. My father was a drummer, grandfather a fiddle player — there were lots of instruments around. I didn’t start on guitar till I was around 12 or 13 years old. At the time,

CB: Well, now that I have kids, any sort of structure has gone out the window. I tend to just go at it, you know? I don’t really like to write a lot when I’m on the road, so a lot of times I’ll be pretty amped to go when I get back. I’ve never been much of a pressure writer. I’m not

or song, or thing to write about, is just taking an excuse to babble.
Q:
In 2002, you narrated a PBS documentary about the Mississippi
River. Can you share a little about the process? Did you learn anything surprising?
A:
I tried to learn something while dealing with the fact that I was
being dragged hither and yon by a film crew. I did learn, by asking all sorts of people what being “mainstream” meant to them, that most of them never had thought about it before and weren’t going to think about it.
Q:
Some of the events you documented, such as the King Biscuit
Blues Festival, barbecue contests and barehanded catfishing, are old hat to people in the region but may seem strange to outsiders. How do you approach these uniquely Southern topics?
A:
I approach all topics from my own level of curiosity. To me every-
thing, especially a commonplace thing, is strange — and yet, I trust, comprehensible.
Roy Blunt Jr. Despite the lengthy title of his 2008 book, Alphabet Juice: The Energies, Gists, and Spirits of Letters, Words, and Combinations Thereof: Their Roots, Bones, Innards, Piths, Pips, and Secret Parts, Tinctures, Tonics, and Essences; With Examples of Their Usage Foul and Savory, Roy Blount, Jr. doesn't mince words. 16 APRIL 2016 | Click magazine

powerhouse Southern Avenue vocalist who has starred in several musical theatre productions including Dream Girls, Spring Awakening, and Disney’s High School Musical 2. “We’re a team who look out for each other. We're a family. We are all different but passionate. And that spills over into our music and creates a warm balance. I love it.” Tikyra "TK" Jackson is Tierinii’s sister and cites gospel music as her primary musical influence. At 21 years old, she’s been playing drums since she was 9, and grew up playing with the church band. A music business major at the University of Memphis, Jackson continues to hone her craft on the drums with the university's marching band, The Mighty Sound of the South, and in the Memphis Tigers basketball pep band. Add to that mix Jeremy Powell on keys and local bassist, Daniel Mckee. “[Mckee] is one of the best and hard-working bass players in Memphis today,” says Naftaly. “He and I toured over 40 states with my former band and having him with us makes us all play better. The diversity and different influences we all have and also share, makes us a unique, fun group of people.” With a self-titled EP and their first full-length LP set to be released in the summer of 2016, Southern Avenue plays multiple shows around Memphis.

Their full-length LP will be recorded and produced by Kevin Houston with Luther Dickinson at the Zebra Ranch in Independence, Mississippi. In the meantime, 28-year-old Naftaly is glad he made the leap of faith. “Living in Memphis is awesome,” he says. “So many bars have live music on a regular basis, growing a midtown community… great food, warm people. What's not to like? Life is short and I’d rather say my goodbyes happy and with no regrets. We only live once and I want to live fully…to create and perform music.” Click magazine | APRIL 2016 19

TIRED OF LOOKING TIRED?
As we age, there are many things going on that make us look droopy and tired. Our collagen production starts slowing down around the age of 16, we lose volume, we have volume shifting south with gravity, we lose bone mass and our skin loses elasticity and starts to sag and wrinkle. There is no single way to address all of these issues. Turning back time and still looking natural takes several modalities.

books and vengeance in the Georgia backwoods is masterfully woven by Panowich. While the family’s legacy is permeated with the illegal substance trade (from moonshine to marijuana and more), the sheriff of the town, Clayton Burroughs, is one of their own, making his position ever-complicated and calling his loyalty constantly into question. Though Clayton’s life is ruled by lawfulness and duty in terms of his job, his convoluted past and family ties give him little peace. The question of his allegiance is never far from his thoughts. To make matters more complicated, an ATF agent by the name of Agent Holly arrives on the scene early in the novel. While Clayton has been approached by other agents in the past where his crime-riddled family is concerned, this agent seems different and his proposition leaves plenty of wiggle room for Clayton’s family. This is a relief to the sheriff, who has refused to be a part of any operation that would land his brothers in prison. Holly promises that Clayton’s family will remain free and untouched as long as they cooperate with this plan to bring down an even higher-up ring of criminals who they have been involved with for years. This plan will force Clayton to examine his bonds to his family, his loyalty to his job in law enforcement, and the history he shares with his brothers. In addition to the multiple perspectives, the novel moves forward and backwards in time so that readers can understand

Panowich’s characters are indescribably real and each is full of the sort of depth that can only be created by the most gifted of authors. While the crime and violence at the root of the story may seem hard to grasp for many readers at first, the complexities and nuanced detail given to the men in the story helps make them, on some level, relatable and understandable by the end of the tale. For readers and lovers of Southern literature, Panowich will be one of the most exciting new discoveries in a long time. His voice is powerful and courageous. His novel creates a picture as realistic and brilliant as it is chilling. And while on the surface, this book focuses on a disturbing aspect of these characters, it manages to uncover so much about the

But you never know what’s underlying with these dogs.” With Delta, there was a lot underlying. He had fairly advanced heartworms and a series of other major health issues. But Pieroni had made a connection, and was determined to save him. “When I found [Delta] I was nervous, but there was no turning back. There was no turning back on this dog.” Perioni took Delta to the best vets she could find, and got him the right care, all while sharing their health journey on social media. The process got a lot of attention from local animal lovers and the rescue community, including Alive Rescue Memphis’ President, Ranice Coppens.

Most of the blankets this year will be donated to Alive Rescue Memphis, to be used in foster care for dogs, and some will also be donated to the West Memphis Animal Shelter. Pieroni, a lifelong animal helper who started a cat rescue when she was six years old, has bigger plans for the program moving forward. This year, she intends to make “Blankets for Barks” themed dog blankets for sale in pet stores, whose profits will benefit the charity. But even with this new tool, she still has no problem tracking down item donations. “I don’t turn anything down. I will drive to the end of the earth to pick up a sheet.”

Taste of DeSoto John Woods’ foodie festivities return to the Landers Center on April 24 Story by CASEY HILDER
Now in its 12th year, the Taste of DeSoto brings together dozens of local restaurants in the DeSoto County area, all while raising money for a good cause. Tickets for this celebration of uniquely Southern foods are $50, and entry for kids under 12 is free. John Woods, Taste of DeSoto founder and owner of First Choice Catering, says this year’s annual event should provide a little something for everyone — from pizza purveyors to catfish connoisseurs.

National Pet ID Week April 17-23, 2016 Make sure you properly identify your pets! We encourage pet owners to use one or more of the following pet identification methods to ensure the safe return of their pets should they become lost:
Collars and identification (ID) tags Make sure it has all current info on the tag and includes: Pet's name, Owner's name and address, Telephone numbers, Any medical problem requiring medication (may require separate tag) Veterinarian's name and number, if possible.
Microchipping Microchipping involves implanting a tiny capsule under the pet's skin between the shoulder blades. Microchips can be used on dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, and other companion pets. The tiny chip is about the size of a grain of rice. The owner then sends the contact information to a registering agency in the event the pet becomes lost. When a pet is found, any agency with an appropriate scanner, can quickly identify a code that links the animal to its owner.

Striking Features
The boldest beauty trends spotted on fashion week runways by Alexandra Nicole
This month is the fifth annual Memphis Fashion week again and I had the pleasure of working with the featured models and catering to their makeup needs. After researching the runways, one of the reoccurring looks of the season is flat hues and bold accents. Bold brows, lips, foundation, hair…be bold!
BOLD SKIN: This winter it was all about contour, but lately the models are going bare when it comes to the base, skipping the rouge and bronzer, instead, opting for foundation and a highlighter only to create a nude luminous look. The lighter the skin the bolder, and the better.
BOLD BROWS: Thicker, more structured brows are making their reintroduction. Beauty moguls all over the world are accentuating their brows by enhancing the arch and thinking the hairline.
BOLD LIPS: Move over eyes, this year it is the lip’s turn to be featured. Bright, matte lipsticks are the focal point for the face this spring and summer.
BOLD LOCKS: Straight locks and blunt cuts are creating a feminine edge to ladies all over the world. Be bold in your hair part to create a more striking look.

The Rookie
WILL LODEN
IT MIGHT BE EASY TO MISJUDGE COMIC WILL LODEN FROM HIS RESUME. After all, a degree in History and Economics from Ole Miss isn’t the most humorous approach to life, and he’ll be the first to admit that. But it’s far more difficult to misjudge his roots, especially when he pronounces ‘Mississippi’ as only natives do. “I say Mississippi properly…M-i-s-s-i-p-p-i,” says Loden, “that’s it, we don’t need all those extra vowels and consonants. My mom’s from Aberdeen, in Monroe County, and my dad’s from Amory in Monroe County. We all slowly scattered across Mississippi, so I got kin in Corinth, Aberdeen, Oxford, Hernando. We’ve got some people in Greenwood… so yeah, they’re all floating around.” 86 APRIL 2016 | Click magazine

Get the f loor you need
that 26-year-old Loden found his true passion in rhetoric and storytelling before he had barely learned to speak. “I started doing comedy when I was three,” he says, “just because of my family dynamic. We’re a very loud, happy family. Every time we gathered together, they would just hold court, and whoever could tell the most interesting story got the table. You know…if you got people to laugh, that was awesome. It’s always weird, I try to introduce girlfriends to my family and it typically doesn’t last very long because it’s just conversational Darwinism at its finest.” Teaching High School football and Lacrosse in Collierville as his day job, Loden describes performing comedic standup as a sort of addiction. “Once I got on stage and I got that first laugh, I was hooked.” Despite being the rookie comic, he’s seen a change in the Memphis comedy scene in the three years he’s been in it. “We have a bunch of young comics who are really good and really different,” he says. “Since we don’t have any structure, you get to hear some really crazy stuff and get a lot of awesome experimentation. It’s DIY.” That kind of growing, DIY scene allows rookie comics the opportunity to participate without jumping through a lot of hurdles. “If you’re funny,” says Loden, “you can play in Memphis.

Surf & Celebration Planning a coastal dinner party for a large group of friends Story by MICHELLE HOPE
Click magazine | APRIL 2016 91
entertaining
NOTHING GETS US MORE IN the mood to entertain than spring on the Coast. This Coastal celebration couldn’t have been more inviting as guests enjoyed the sunset on the rooftop for cocktails and a surf and turf menu for dinner. The Gulf Coast of Mississippi has so much to offer when entertaining. The Oyster Reef restaurant sits right on the beach in Long Beach, Mississippi — so when we found out they had a rooftop and private dining room available for events, we snatched it up! The restaurant also has gorgeous panoramic views throughout. This intimate dinner party for 30 guests was to celebrate a milestone birthday, but could easily be duplicated for a rehearsal dinner, pre-prom dinner, anniversary party or even a girls night out.
NOTE-WORTHY The invitations, place cards, menus, and cigar labels were all custom designed by Joanna Larson of Southerly Post, who we found on Etsy. We even had the option to print everything ourselves which saves time and money. The cigar labels were our favorite. Those doubled as a favor and entertainment during this “Dirty 30” themed bash. We also gave each guest a little bag of local coffee from The Coast Roast.
FRESH & FESTIVE The French Potager of Bay St. Louis did the floral design. When throwing a dinner party, you want to keep the centerpieces low so guests can talk easily, but you don’t want to sacrifice the look of the table so go with something full and lush, but low. We chose a garland and incorporated lots of candles for ambiance. We added some Italian bulb lights in the ceiling to give the room a soft glow. We chose a bold linen from Party Tables with a deep cobalt blue pattern that really popped. With long, dramatic tables, a bold pattern is all you need to really create a dramatic affect. Everything else can be simple to coordinate with the look. 92 APRIL 2016 | Click magazine

We chose to do a pre-selected menu for a buffet-style dinner for this party and offered the following: To begin, Chargrilled Oysters on the half shell and Cajun Boiled Royal Red Shrimp served with Remoulade Sauce; Caesar Salad with homemade Dressing; tossed with Parmesan Cheese and fresh-baked Croutons; Roasted Beef Tenderloin; served with Horseradish Aioli Green Beans Almandine; Garlic Infused Vermicelli and Chocolate Ganache Birthday Cake.
