Summer’s End Some people never leave school. No, I’m not talking about the guy in a letterman jacket who hangs out in front of the mall for several seasons after graduation. I’m referring to those out there with a thirst for knowledge. The relentless devourers of books, music, art and other forms of information. The world is your classroom, and the beautiful surroundings of the Mid-South only seem to cultivate this attitude. This month’s issue of Click is a celebration of knowledge and experience like only we can do. From the storied history of adventurous author and Southern transplant, Richard Grant (page 17), to the little-known artistic talents of local radio DJ, Ron Olson (page 22), the stories in this issue are all about escaping one’s comfort zone. As a writer-editor-photographer-courierrepairman myself, I can appreciate someone who tries on a new hat every now and then. Special thanks go out to the Hernando Public Library and Madison Yen for making this month’s cover and fashion feature, “Class Act” (page 72) possible. This month’s second fashion feature, “Back to Cool” (page 81) focuses on the trials and tribulations of sending the little ones back to school in style. PLUTO, MISSISSIPPI, REPRESENTS A SMALL SPECK OF A BURG nestled in one of the poorest counties of the poorest states in the Union. For author Richard Grant, a self-proclaimed “adventure writer”, Pluto is an escape. It was here that Grant, a Malaysian-born world traveler from birth who spent most of his formative years in London, England, penned his 2015 book Dispatches from Pluto: Lost and Found in the Mississippi Delta. The book explores his time as an outside observer and eventual participant in small-town life. Grant will appear at the Hernando Public Library as part of its “Meet the Author” series on August 11. CLICK MAGAZINE: Why Mississippi? When you’ve got all 50 states laid bare before you, why keep coming back to this one? Richard Grant: I’ve been coming to Mississippi for about 10 years. I have some really good friends down there and while I wouldn’t say I’ve felt at home my entire time in Mississippi, I have always enjoyed myself. I spent a summer living in Water Valley a few years before moving to the Delta, so it wasn’t like I was coming in totally unprepared. CM: What made you pursue writing and this kind of journalistic style you’ve become known for? RG: I studied American History at the College of London and my first priority was always to get out of England. I’ve never really felt at home there, either. I started traveling around the United States in my early twenties. That was back in the ‘80s when people still wrote letters and I would often write and send things to friends in London. I had written to a friend who works for a magazine and he convinced me that if we cleaned it up a bit, I might just be able to get published. I thought this sounded like a great way to travel and get paid for it. So I turned myself into a freelance journalist and lived on the road for quite a while, telling stories. I traveled the American West and started studying these truckers, cowboys and other people who lived on the road by choice. That was the subject of my first book, American Nomads. 18 AUGUST 2016 | myclickmag.com
CM: You’ve traveled to some of the most dangerous places in the world, including East Africa, where you and a team attempted the first descent of the Malagarasi River in Tanzania, as well as a lawless region of the Sierra Madre mountains in northwestern Mexico known as “God’s Middle Finger”. Has there ever been a point in your travels when you genuinely feared for your life? RG: Yes, very much so, especially during my time in Mexico. I was hunted through the woods at night by a few Mexican hillbillies and it was very, very frightening indeed. In East Africa, I contacted Dengue Fever, which left me feeling very sick. All kinds of things went wrong on the river: disease; we found ourselves in the middle of a gun battle between poachers and anti-poachers; and eventually, the river ran out of water, leaving us to drag a raft through 115 degree heat. We failed the journey, so it’s still open for anyone else who would like to attempt to be the first. CM: Any advice or road philosophy for those out there with similar aspirations? RG: Never put your valuables in a hotel safe in a third-world country and beware of cops. The best thing you can hope to have in a foreign country is a local by
your side who you trust. I was doing OK in Mexico while I had those sort of people around, but eventually I ran out. CM: What one word would you use to describe Pluto, Mississippi? RG: Beautiful. It’s a beautiful place. The oxbow lakes, the cypress trees, the very few houses, the big oak trees that lead to deep woods and the cotton fields that lead to nowhere. I think it’s quite a beautiful place and think I was fortunate that we were sort of adopted into that family during my time there. We’ve since sold the house from Dispatches from Pluto and moved 50 miles out to Jackson since my wife has a job down here.

CM: How are you adapting to the Southern palate? Do you have a favorite place to eat? RG: I like Lusco’s in Greenwood. Love their fried chicken, even though they aren’t known for it. I also never quite understood how good ribs can be until I moved down here.

CM: Have you picked up any Southern hobbies like hunting or fishing? RG: I wrote a little about learning to be a hunter in Dispatches from Pluto and I’ve kept that up. I’m definitely a meat hunter — no interest in the horns, trophies and all that. CM: What is your workflow? RG: I can’t really take notes. Too much worry comes to me about losing my notebooks. For Pluto, I wanted — actually, needed — to get a book out of the experience. I had no idea what kind of book or experience it would be, but I was determined to get something. I began to write down descriptions of places, conversations and things I saw at the end of every day. I read the local newspapers religiously — there’s some wild stuff in there. I wasn’t exactly sure what parts I was going to need, so I kept track of nearly everything. Of course, I didn’t use 90 percent of it for the book, but that was the method.

since the 1970s, Ron Olson is a household name who has spent decades turning people onto new music. Now, the longtime FM 100 DJ is hoping to do the same as he turns the dial to painting. Around four years ago, Olson first picked up a brush to give his creative side a different kind of outlet when his wife, Vicki, bought him a canvas and paints. “I always wanted to paint, and I never did,” the Germantown resident says. “You’ve got to just one day decide to do it.” For years, Olson gained inspiration each time he visited his pal David Stough, owner of David’s Frames & Art in Memphis. “I go by David’s shop, talk to him and I look at all the stuff and I’m just amazed by it.” Olson also comes by his creativity honestly as his mother, Lillian, was a painter, as is his motherin-law, Betty Smith. Olson's first attempt at painting didn’t go as he’d hoped, causing him to shelve the idea for a year. “Then, I got the spark again and I started figuring out that you have to have this and that." Joining a local art club, Olson soon participated in an art show at the Memphis Botanic Garden, where he sold his first works. “ [Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital] bought three or four pieces and that’s what took me to the moon,” he recalls. “I got real excited about it after that. When you sell your first thing, you’re like, ‘Hey, wait a minute, I’ve got a chance here. This is pretty cool.’”

Though, his elation from selling those pieces did not keep him from eating a little humble pie along the way. In fact, a run-in with a moose helped Olson along his journey. “St. George’s [Independent] School has an incredible show in the fall. I invited myself to it,” he laughs. Moments into the show, he stumbled upon a moose painting worth around $6,000. “I swear to you it looked like I could feed the moose, it was that good,” he explains. “I looked down at my stuff and I was mortified. I was embarrassed on another level.” Instead of quitting, Olson decided to “bring it” and ramped up his artistic energy. “I just really learned I’m getting started.” Using a mixture of media from metal to cigar boxes, guitars are Olson's specialty and he usually incorporates the word ‘Memphis’ or a song lyric on each piece. “[I] kind of fell into guitars because of the music connection, and because Memphis is such a powerful word and people all over the world love the music scene in Memphis,” Olson acknowledges. “[Music has] been a big part of my life for 40 years. I never learned how to play a guitar, but I can paint one.” Olson is a self-taught artist and admits he had little clue about painting when he first started. “I had a lady come to me at an art show, and she said, ‘You know what kills me is that you don’t even know what you’re doing,’” he recalls. “I had a couple of people tell me, ‘Whatever you do, don’t get a lesson. CHRIS MILAM HAS FOUND HIS sound. On his new album Kids These Days, he explores instrumentation and vocal tones in new and inventive ways. The title track, out now as an iTunes single, was inspired by a broken engagement and the tumultuous year that followed. In a short period of time, Milam lost both his fiancée and his home, leaving him with only what could fit into a car. Then, his car was stolen. Forced to find a newfound resilience, Milam questioned what his future would be. Kids These Days explores what happens when things fall apart and life doesn’t look like we thought it would. Capturing a real day in Milam’s world, the title track demonstrates him driving to play an out-of-town show. Along the way, he stops for gas and hears the cashiers complaining about “kids these days” — how lazy and entitled and unfocused they are. At the time, Milam was working three jobs in addition to playing music, commuting six hours to play a gig, skipping meals, barely getting by and then coming home to an unraveling relationship. He got mad, thinking, you don’t know me. “‘Kids These Days’ comes from that place,” he explains. “I know a lot of folks who, despite hard work and good intentions, aren’t where they thought they’d be. I’d always had a clear idea of what my future would look like. It was transformative to wake up one day and realize I had none of it.” Milam says the whole album explores the different answers to the question: What now? Life hasn’t always been so trying for Milam. He has had the opportunity to live and work in a variety of places along his way. He learned to be a professional in Nashville. He expanded himself creatively living in New York. But he feels his best work has always been done in his hometown of Memphis. “I feel like I can be myself here,” he says. “I love it.” The album features local musicians, all playing live in the studio. “That is very important to me. This city has a way of filling songs with its atmosphere — beautiful, fearless and endlessly weird.” When he was growing up, Milam’s parents were both teachers and big fans of music. Summers were for travel — long car trips and the like. The family of four all took turns
picking the music. “That was a huge education,” Milam recalls. “We each had our preferences, but there were albums that we all agreed on. That’s a huge part of what made music so important to me — shared experience. It was something we all had in common.” Milam cites ‘60s and ‘90s music as his biggest influences. He was listening a lot to Simon & Garfunkel’s Bookends, REM’s Automatic for the People, Chris Bell’s I Am the Cosmos and The War On Drugs’ Lost in the Dream as he made his new album. Many of his greatest heroes are singer-
songwriters. But what he’s really drawn to are sounds and lyrics that are fresh in perspective — be it rock, rap, or Americana. Milam’s attention is undivided now. His personal goals are his career goals. And what matters most to him is his music. “I want to reach as many people as I can, making the music that I want to make,” Milam says. “I’m 100 percent independent, so the next step is getting the right team around this album. It’s a process, but I’m optimistic.” Milam plans to release another single this fall and release the album in early 2017. myclickmag.com | AUGUST 2016 27

Labeled as Hill Country blues by aficionados, the sound is reminiscent of a simpler time, as the audience of mostly family members and children dance to the music with wide smiles on their faces. The guests in attendance are Roger Stolle and Jeff Konkel, who previously teamed up on the award-winning blues documentaries M for Mississippi: A Road Trip Through the Birthplace of the Blues(2008) and We Juke Up in Here: Mississippi’s Juke Joint Culture at the Crossroads (2012). This particular party is included in the first episode of the filmmakers’ new series entitled Moonshine & Mojo Hands: The Mississippi Blues Series. Aptly dubbed “Alligator Women & Raccoon Barbecue,” the episode is one of ten that are now streaming free online exclusively at moonshineandmojohands.com.

“Co-creator Jeff Konkel and I knew from the get-go that we wanted to showcase both the past and the future of blues in Mississippi,” says Stolle. “Our earlier film projects, mainly featured older bluesmen since, frankly, they weren’t getting any younger. With the new series, we still wanted to capture some of the older musicians, but we also wanted to balance it with some of the up-and-comers from the younger generation. Just as importantly, we wanted to document as much of the landscape and tradition surrounding the blues as possible.” The series involves the pair’s travels through the Delta and Hill Country of Mississippi. Stolle points out that Moonshine & Mojo Hands isn’t about blues “the genre.” It’s about blues “the culture.” “We filmed the series two or three days at a time over a 6-month time period at around 40 locations,” says Stolle. myclickmag.com | AUGUST 2016 29
“Each episode represents one day of shooting, and every day was interesting, fun and stressful at some point. The crazy owner of Graceland Too certainly stands out as memorable! We’ll also never forget chopping cotton or eating barbecue raccoon. Musically, we spent time with such unique and talented players spanning multiple generations, so there were many high points.” Blues artists featured in the series include James “Super Chikan” Johnson, Jimbo Mathus, R.L. Boyce, Leo Bud Welch, Robert “Bilbo” Walker, Mark “Muleman” Massey, Terry “Harmonica” Bean, Lucious Spiller, Louis “Gearshifter” Youngblood, and many more. “Having a personal concert with a guy like Jimbo Mathus, Eddie Cusic, Watermelon Slim or Leo ‘Bud’ Welch is every blues fan’s dream,” says Stolle. “My buddy Jeff and I are both in the music business, specializing in blues. I have my Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art store in Clarksdale, and he has his Broke & Hungry Records label in St. Louis. We’re both long-time fans of blues music and Mississippi culture... I also book the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, so between all of that, we have a lot of contacts within the blues community here.” 30 AUGUST 2016 | myclickmag.com

Since the filmmakers wanted the series to be about the characters and culture behind the blues and not just about blues music, per se, they felt it was important to have a title without blues in it. “As for moonshine’s role in Delta blues,” says Stolle, “let’s be honest about it. For most of the first century in blues, that was the drink of juke joints and house parties. Now, if you see it pop up occasionally, it is more of a novelty, but during Mississippi’s prolonged prohibition, which lasted till 1966, that was the go-to drink for a lot of blues fans. Folks couldn’t buy it from a store back then, so they or their neighbors simply made it — with varying results, I’m sure. It’ll definitely wake you up or knock you out.” If Moonshine & Mojo Hands fans run out of new episodes, the good news is the filmmakers are shopping it around to cable outlets in search of a wider audience and potential funding for a Season 2. In the meantime, those interested might want to check out the pair’s other projects at cathead.biz and brokeandhungryrecords.com. “From cotton fields to juke joints, from moonshine to mojo bags, from folk art to Parchman prison, we’re trying to indoctrinate fans into the whole scene,” says Stolle. “To us, you can’t separate the art form from the inspiration.”

AS THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY DEVOUR WHAT is left of another summer season, it is easy to start wishing for the comfort and mild temperatures of autumn. Even with summer’s end rapidly approaching, however, there is still plenty of warm weather’s bounty left to savor in terms of food and travel. It just would not quite be summer in the South without delicious fresh garden produce, a spur-ofthe-minute weekend road trip, and of course, a few roadside eateries along the way. Be sure to check out these summertime reads, perfect for inspiring those last-minute hot weather plans. 32 AUGUST 2016 | myclickmag.com
The Southern Vegetable Book by Rebecca Lang Perhaps nothing rings as clearly of summertime as a bucket of vegetables fresh out of the garden. Their presence on the dinner table in all their homegrown splendor, though, is the real treat. This is the essence of Rebecca Lang’s exploration in her new book, which discusses all things vegetable in its quest for a new appreciation for this old Southern tradition. The connection between Southern culture and vegetable gardening is undeniable. It’s not just growing the food or preparing it that is important. Rather, Rebecca turns her attention to the sense of community, history, and connectedness that Southern gardens hold. She writes, “Thanks to growing up in a farming community, I often saw vegetables come in the back door in bushels rather than in grocery store bags. It was those grand volumes of fresh produce that drew my parents and my grandmothers to the screened porch to shuck, shell, string, or snap. Fingers would work while legs gently nudged gliders and rockers into a contagious rhythm.” What memories these lines will invoke for readers who have had the joy of participating in such time-honored summer traditions. But, beyond that, the book goes on to impart a great degree of useful and practical information for new gardeners and seasoned farmers alike. For instance, the book includes sections such as “Ways to Shop for the Best Vegetables” and “Making the Right Vegetable Cut.” It is not all about actually growing the veggies (though it is full of nostalgia where that is concerned), but instead focuses on selecting and preparing all the best local food regardless of whether you buy it or grow it yourself. Beautiful recipes abound in this volume, which is neatly organized by vegetable and season with entire sections dedicated to beets, fennel, and the like. The photography is gorgeous and is sure to beg readers to try each and every one of these tempting recipes. Southern Routes: Secret Recipes from the Best Down-Home Joints in the South by Ben Vaughn For anyone who has ever wished they could gain the inside knowledge about the South’s best recipes, Ben Vaughn has created the perfect answer in this volume chronicling his journey from North Carolina to Texas in search of the best dishes our region has to offer. As an award-winning chef, author, and restaurateur, as well as a Food Network host, he is certainly up to the task. In this book, his mission was to provide the 100 most delicious Southern recipes and he was able to meet that challenge, even if it was not always easy. The book is more than a compilation of recipes, though. There is plenty of entertainment woven in as he captures the real stories of the folks along the way. As most Southerners well know, recipes are often top secret as many have been passed down through the generations. As Ben encounters one such situation, he effectively recreates the recipe in question on his own in order to provide the recipe. He even puts those replicated versions to the test by getting approval straight from the source. This book is said to be a virtual roadmap for hitting all the South’s best kitchens including the Delta’s Mat and Naddies and Carlos, as well as Rocky’s in New Orleans. Wendell Smith’s Restaurant in Tennessee and Martha’s Menu in Mississippi also grace the book’s pages alongside many other classics. Ben sits on the culinary advisory board to National Food Day while also serving as CEO and culinary director for his own restaurant group. Southern Routes is sure to inspire a delicious meal creation (if not an end-of-summer road trip) for readers on either side of the Mason-Dixon.

in the form of devices, video games, and television have become the new norm for most American children. As research consistently proves the negative effects of this lifestyle on a child’s growth and mental development, parents mourn their own lasting memories of connecting with the outdoors through daily interaction with nature — memories they realize their children aren’t getting nearly enough of. This is especially true when children are encased in urban environments, as the days of free-roaming the woods or digging in the dirt for hours on end are sadly lost. That’s why the Come Alive Outside Design Challenge seeks to change this status quo in ways that not only reconnect youth with the outdoors, but also teaches them the invaluable lessons of stewardship to the environment, urban gardening, and mutual collaboration to achieve a goal. In partnership with local landscape professionals and landscape architecture college students, the nonprofit presents opportunities for youth of all ages to design and build engaging outdoor learning environments at urban schools and childcare facilities across the nation. “Come Alive Outside is more than the promotion of children playing outside,” says Michael Hatcher, a local professional landscaper who hosted one of this year’s Come Alive Outside projects at Memphis 34 AUGUST 2016 | myclickmag.com
Taking care of the little ones you love! Catholic Middle and High School. “It is an opportunity for us, as a part of the landscape industry, to expose people to better lifestyles found outside. Whether this lifestyle is through exercise, urban agriculture and gardening, or through stewardship to the environment is based on the individual.” Hatcher is President of Michael Hatcher and Associates, a company providing a full range of landscape services for Tennessee, North Mississippi and the entire MidSouth. Along with The Kitchen Community and students from Auburn University, Hinds Community College, Louisiana State University and Mississippi State University, Hatcher worked with youth from Memphis Catholic Middle and High School to create an outdoor learning environment that included the creative input of the students and teachers who will use it. “The excitement that I saw in the students and the commitment to come up with something that was both unique and creative, all while working together, was inspiring,” notes Hatcher, who began the first phase of construction in December 2015 and completed the second phase of the $10,000 project this summer. Along with managing and utilizing rainwater effectively, the resulting space also creates a certified wildlife habitat and area that can be explored with students’ five senses. Hatcher believes that the greatest achievement with the program goes beyond the actual space being created. “There is a sharing of knowledge that happens when students come together and work together,” he says. “It is these opportunities, such as working in the garden, that broaden experiences. Come Alive Outside has started the discussion on food gardens and the education on how vegetables are grown and where food comes from. This knowledge about food is also being done outside and provides an opportunity to share the environment and nature with others, as well.” If you would like to participate in the Come Alive Outside program, Hatcher lists several ways for others — both inside and outside of the landscaping industry — to get involved. “Local companies can easily partner with Come Alive Outside just by promoting it in their conversations and marketing materials,” he says. “Understanding what Come Alive Outside means to them individually and sharing those ideas with their clients, customers and employees will help this movement grow.”

CREATE A NEW TRADITION THIS SUMMER, FRIDAY NIGHT SUPPER CLUB! Whether you are bringing together old friends or looking to make some new connections, starting a supper club group is a great idea for everyone. At first, the organization task can seem daunting, but it can be simple with these tips on how to start your own supper club.
LOCATION Our group decided to dine out for our first supper club meeting at Capriccio Grill in downtown Memphis. The Peabody hotel was the perfect place to meet and kick off our new tradition over dinner and cocktails. No one had to cook or clean up, we could focus on the fellowship and groundwork that needed to be laid for our new venture. Capriccio’s has a lovely backroom that could accommodate our dinner party and allowed a more intimate experience.
ENTICING ENTREES A pre-selected menu was chosen for us so it still felt more like an upscale dinner at a friend’s house with no decisions that needed to be made and no menus to ponder over. As our guests arrived, cocktails (Blueberry Mojito’s) were served so we could mingle before sitting down to dinner. Capriccio’s is known for their steaks, so of course we had to indulge. Our menu consisted of: First Course: Caprese Chef’s Course: Mini Crab Cake Main Course: 8oz Signature Filet with Shrimp Kabob with side dishes of Risotto and Broccoli Rabe Dessert: Equinox

entertaining DETAILS We decided to dine with a group of five couples. Each person had a place card and we took extra care in making the table setting beautiful. Specialty linens, chargers and gorgeous floral arrangements were used along with chivari-style chairs. The beauty of dining at a restaurant is that they provide the plates, flatware, stem-ware and serving dishes needed, along with excellent servers attending to our every need.
TIPS Our group decided to have monthly supper club and alternate the hosts each month, along with dining out and hosting dinner in a home. Here are some options and ideas to get you started on forming your own club. • Choose a different restaurant or eatery each month to meet at and select a theme like Italian or Al Fresco dining. Plan the menu and details accordingly. • Host a potluck and have guests contribute by bringing food/drinks or have a cooking class and allow the group to cook the meal together. • Take a look at the calendar and host your club in an appropriate place for that month. For example, February is perfect for a New Orleans-style dinner to celebrate Mardi Gras, or host at a sports pub in September in honor of college football season’s kickoff. • Start a group text or email chain to keep everyone informed of the plans and remind them of each month’s meeting details. Establish a budget with your group that works for everyone, for dining out or hosting in your home. It’s important to keep your club nights affordable so everyone can remain committed.

CLEMENTINE-JALAPEÑO MARGARITA
A tangy, spicy twist on an old favorite tied together with reposado tequila, jalapeño, fresh clementine and lime juices, and a touch of honey

Yield: 1 cocktail
INGREDIENTS: 2 ounces tequila reposado 2 ounces fresh clementine juice (That’s the juice from about 2 clementines) 1 ounce fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon chopped jalapeño ½ teaspoon honey or agave For garnish: (optional) Flaky sea salt Thinly sliced jalapeño rounds Lime or clementine round
DIRECTIONS: 1. Moisten the rim of your glass with a lime wedge and dip the rim in salt. (This is obviously optional, but I recommend it.) 2. Place all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain over ice into your rimmed cocktail glass. 3. Garnish with jalapeño rounds and a lime/ clementine round if you're feeling fancy.
