editor’s letter
Home for the Holidays The Christmas season is here again. For some, that thought alone conjures visions of sugar plums, wooden soldiers, and overpriced electronics. For me, it’s about good food, trying to stay away from legions of crazed shoppers and attempting to coax my significant other out of her multilayered and climate controlled blanket fort. This month, Click gears up for the holiday season with a ton of compelling Christmas content. From an interview with DeSoto County's premier Christmas décor expert, Emily Layson (page 13), to the grand unveiling of what’s sure to be the hottest shopping spot this holiday season in Tanger Outlets (page 35). For those looking for a nice quiet night at home, our drinks and recipe features this month boast a seasonal selection of winter lagers (page 22) and a perfect winter cocktail (page 26). In addition, our fashion feature this month, “Winter Wonderland” (page 72) showcases several cozy and classy looks against the backdrop of the elaborately decorated Banks House in Hernando. If that isn’t enough to get you inspired, look no further than this month’s featured book review of Christmas with Southern Lady, Volume II (page 20). This lengthy tome packs everything you need to get into the holiday spirit, from dazzling décor to delicious recipes. So from all of us to all of you: Happy holidays! We hope this annual injection of Christmas cheer is enough to carry you into the new year and then some. Read on,

F
OR EMILY AND MICHAEL LAYSON, owners of the Wooden Door, a 15year dream to own a furniture store became a reality this year when their Goodman Road location opened its doors. With an eye for interior design and an average of four to five trees in the Layson house every year, Emily's expertise in holiday décor came in handy this holiday season when the Laysons hosted several trim-a-tree parties throughout November to get local residents in the spirit.
Click Magazine: What goes into your trim-a-tree parties? Emily Layson: Everybody is interested in making their tree look like it does in a magazine or on television. The trim-a-tree parties were small, about 20 people. We have hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and I do demonstrations of how to apply the ribbon to a tree, how to place the topper, where to put your ornaments around the tree, things like that. CM: Which works best: a real trees or a fake tree? EL: It’s definitely a personal preference. Fake trees are easy to work with as far as ribbons and tying things in because the wires in the branches help to stabilize things. You have a much tougher battle trying to decorate a real tree. I personally love a real tree, though. The look is worth the effort. I have one in my house. CM: What’s the perfect size for a tree? EL: It really depends on the home and the ceiling height. I find that 7 to 9 foot trees would probably be a good average perfect-size tree. Obviously, you’ll want a little bit bigger of a tree for a larger room. I’ve had some elderly people come to me with concerns about getting their trees up this year, and I always recommend these tabletopper trees. They’re 3 to 4 feet tall and still allow for a lot of decorative possibilities. That way, you can still get those special, meaningful ornaments out every year. Placing it on a table gives it a little more height, so you can still have a nice-sized Christmas tree without breaking your back. 14 DECEMBER 2015 | Click magazine

placement? EL: At least three different sizes should be on any tree: really big, medium and small. Everything doesn’t go on the outside, you know. You generally want to use your bigger ornaments on the inside branches to kind of fill some gaps and holes. This gives the tree a more three-dimensional look. CM: Is there a particular brand of ornaments that you really like? EL: I really like Raz, it’s a classic brand that’s been around for years. It’s good quality stuff. I carry Melrose brand myself. But I’m not too partial to any one brand — I’ll buy ornaments from WalMart if I think they’re cute, especially for some of the filler ornaments. Click magazine | DECEMBER 2015 15

Big House, Little House Hernando’s Banks House gets all dressed up for Christmas Story by ROBERT LEE LONG | Photos by CASEY HILDER
T
HERE IS A SPECIAL HOLIDAY MAGIC THAT envelopes the century-old Banks House decked out in glittering hues of green, red and gold, along with
splashes of deep aqua, bright turquoise and colors of almost every hue of the rainbow. After all, the Banks House is home to the DeSoto Arts Council which houses revolving exhibits of exquisite art painted from the palettes of local artists. The walls literally come alive with rich, vibrant paintings and photographs, including hand-painted masterpieces of wildlife, blues and gospel artists and still-life photographs. Another masterpiece looms underneath the sparkling crystal chandelier in the main foyer of the grand house. It’s the painstaking creation of Lula Whittle of Hernando. Her “masterpiece” is a gingerbread house that claimed the top prize in the recent Gingerbread House Art Contest sponsored by the DeSoto Arts Council. Whittle is somewhat of an expert “builder” and creator of gingerbread houses.
Whittle’s creations and those of other designers more than likely graced Christmas presents wrapped and placed underneath Christmas trees throughout the world. Cleo Wrap closed its doors in 2011 and suddenly Whittle found herself without a job. “Fortunately, my severance was good enough that it took me to that following January when I was at my full retirement

Mississippi McTwist Community collective Hernando Skates brings skateboarding to North Mississippi Story by SEVERIN ALLGOOD | Photos by MIKE LEE & CASEY HILDER
N
OTHING SAYS 21ST CENTURY LIKE A BRANDspanking new skate park. And for residents of Hernando, Mississippi, a three-year effort has become a reality.
The newly modeled and currently-unnamed skate park at
Renasant Park in Hernando sports all the ramps, bowls and boarder accoutrement worthy of the pros. The residents of DeSoto County can thank Chad Crawford and Edward Pidgeon for their years of work to deliver North Mississippi its beautiful new space. Crawford, 34, was born in Picayune, Mississippi. He got his first skateboard when he was nine years old. He and his family moved to Miramar, California in 1989 and returned to Mississippi in 2001 and settled in Horn Lake. “26 years later, and I love it more than ever,” he says. Crawford met Pidgeon at the opening of the Tobey Park skate park in Memphis. Pidgeon is a Memphis native with deep roots in the city, but his semi-pro surfing career has taken him around the globe. “He is probably the most caring, selfless individual I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing,” Chad says. “Soon after we met I learned that he also lived in Hernando and was working on petitioning the city to add a skate park to a large park that was being planned, so of course I wanted in.” Once Pidgeon and Crawford secured a location, they set up an account for donations managed by the Parks and Recreation Foundation and began a variety of fundraising efforts. “Edward did the lion’s share. We set up at the farmers market to beg for change and he stood longer than anyone else. We had an art sale. He did a letter writing campaign that brought in $5,000. He spent years driving countless miles to collect and recycle cans and not a single penny went into his gas tank,” Crawford says. “When construction began, he used his connections to secure the best price possible on concrete and dirt.” Crawford and Pidgeon have held numerous free skateboarding clinics for kids and to show the community that they can make anything happen if they are willing to work for it. In order to apply for grants they needed a picture and some base numbers. Pidgeon approached several of the top artisan skate park builders for help, but no one would do it for less than $1000. Then Evergreen stepped up. Evergreen Skate parks is a Portland, Oregon based business that was founded by longtime skateboarders Billy and Catherine Coulon. that grew out of a desire to make the most fun, finely crafted skateparks possible. “The owner was out of the country on a build and he racked up a sizable phone bill trying to coordinate with their office,” Crawford says. “Not only did they help but it actually cost them money to do so. The crew that they sent was awesome. Some of the coolest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.” Evergreen knew how much this project meant to Pidgeon and Crawford and allowed them to be there every day to give input. “The crew that they sent was awesome! Some of the coolest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I actually worked beside them while we turned our dreams into reality with our bare hands. It was a very spiritual experience and we were a family by the end,” Crawford says. The design of the park was a product of

the skateboarders involved in the build. Pidgeon and Crawford talked with the crew extensively about the purpose they wanted the park to serve. They wanted a place for both the person who has never skated and the seasoned skater to enjoy. “We wanted a park that was different than all the others in the area and that’s exactly what we got. The flow of the park almost forces you to work on the base fundamentals of riding so progression is basically built into the park. If you come out and ride a few times a week you will notice a marked improvement in your balance and turning. I’ve already seen it happen,” Crawford says. Crawford and Pidgeon want to do a “phase two” of the park with a price tag of $180,000-$200,000. The addition would include a plaza/street area, a bowl and shade structures.

Higginbotham Fundraiser
T
wo years ago, Tasha Higginbotham was diagnosed with complete renal failure. Now, a possible kidney donor has finally been found for Higginbotham.
After getting tested, a friend from Colorado Springs discovered that she is
a positive match. Higginbotham hopes to have the kidney transplant surgery in December. To help with costs, a fundraiser was held at Cedar Hill Farm on September 22. Friends and family from across the community came out to support Higginbotham by taking part in a silent auction, purchasing baked goods and more.

year definitely puts visitors in the Christmas spirit. With an ever-present holiday music blaring, the light scent of cinnamon and wall-to-wall holiday decorations, one might swear they were transported somewhere between the Island of Misfit Toys and a Macy’s department store in late December. Gladys has decorated the two-story, 7,000 square foot home every year since moving to DeSoto County from Texas. The effort is a labor of love, as she prepares her home well before the holiday season and coordinates all of the décor herself. “Kids love the decorations, but I do this mainly for senior adults,” she says. “So many are left out around Christmas time and even more have physical disabilities that makes decorating a chore. For a lot of them, their visit the only Christmas they have.

A bevy of themed rooms in the Fleming residence includes four bedrooms, five bathrooms, two dens, a sitting room, and living and dining areas. Each rooms is decked out with dozens of portraits of Santa, garland, nutcrackers, snowmen, themed Christmas trees and nearly everything else that could be considered fit for the holidays. Six Christmas trees and thousands of ornaments usher visitors through the sprawling halls of the Fleming home, with each room and the pathways between bearing a different Christmas theme. The Night Before Christmas room, a child’s bedroom decorated all in red, is a Fleming favorite. “My husband and I used to sleep in that room and wake up every Christmas morning like we were little kids,” she says. There’s also the Village room, which presents a floor-to-ceiling diorama of a tiny winter wonderland against a blue Styrofoam sky backdrop lit with “stars.” This year marks the end of the DeSoto County Christmas House’s multi-year run. Gladys says she will donate most of her trove of Christmas decorations to the city at the end of the year. 86 DECEMBER 2015 | Click magazine

ENTERTAINING
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Party Tips for decking the halls for your perfect holiday celebration Story by MICHELLE HOPE Photography by CREATION STUDIOS

entertaining
'Tis the season for entertaining friends and family — here are some festive ideas to celebrate in style. MERRY & BRIGHT Christmas lights are a must. This economical way to light up your home and add ambiance is key in creating a festive atmosphere. Solid white lights are a classic and give a magical look when wrapped around trees and bushes. As a bonus, you can put them up a little early and leave them for the entire holiday season to enjoy.
CHOOSING A THEME Theme is important, even when decorating for the holidays. Rustic, Shabby Chic, Traditional or Monochromatic color schemes are all options. You can go simple and just style your tree in a chosen theme or go all out and decorate every single room in your house.
90 DECEMBER 2015 | Click magazine
TANNENBAUM TIME Get the tree up early. Giving yourself the most time to enjoy it will be worth all the hard work. If you get a live tree, set an alarm on your phone to help remind you to water it.
A FANCY FÊTE It’s the perfect time to throw a party when you already have your house decorated. Christmas is a built- in theme - just add food and friends. Cocktail parties are great for hosting at your home because you don’t have to worry about adding a lot of extra seating. Appetizers passed or on a buffet keep guests mingling and moving about. You could even ask guests to bring their favorite drink to share which is easy on the budget.
MISTLETOE MOMENTS Whether you have a handful of close friends sharing dinner or a full on Holiday shindig, make sure to capture your memories through pictures and video. And then actually print them or have a photo book made. This will be something you will cherish for years to come.
