editor’s letter
And A Healthy New Year This month’s issue of Click magazine is all about health and fitness — an appropriate subject, given the all-important resolutions to get in shape that dominate most people’s Q1 calendars. And while most people fail to uphold their yearly resolutions past January 7, we hope this annual issue serves as a reminder not to break those promises. To help you along the way, we’ve packed a ton of healthy practices, recipes, and insightful tips alongside our usual monthly offering of the hottest events in the MidSouth. For those looking to build a better diet, our feature on the unique concoctions at Ultimate Foods would be a great place to start. While I was initially skeptical about how a brownie made with black beans and avocado would taste, my fears were wiped away almost as quickly as my plate. Check our article and recipe on page 16 for a taste of what they offer. And if that’s not enough, contributing blogger Serena Wolf offers a delicious peanut butter and jelly smoothie recipe on page 24. In addition, we have a follow-up interview this month with the heart health experts at Baptist Memorial-DeSoto. This story is very near to my heart (pun intended) because Mississippi is still considered among the unhealthiest states in the U.S. in terms of heart attacks and obesity. For some added insight from Dr. Yaser Cheema, see our interview on page 13. We’ve also highlighted several upstanding businesses in the area to help you get in gear, no matter your workout flow. From the relatively new percussionbased POUND to tried-and-true cardio workouts, this month’s cover story, Faces of Fitness (page 59), offers an exercise for all sizes. So from all of us to all of you: enjoy the post-holiday rush and keep on pushin’. Read on,

This line stings as do the subsequent few which record some of the reactions of Grant’s contemporaries, but these things do have resonating power because they make this singular point: there are a lot of assumptions out there about the South. Founded or unfounded, these things exist and the remarkable thing about Grant’s journey is that it uncovers (or at least touches on) the truths of our region’s complicated dynamics. And as he discovers along his path in Holmes County, there is plenty of good shining through underneath all those nasty assumptions. Yearning for exploration and thirsty to soak in the beauty that the hidden gem of the Mississippi Delta undoubtedly holds, Grant gets a lot of disconcerting advice sprinkled with a fair share of unbecoming state statistics as he works to make the move happen for himself and his hesitant girlfriend. Though they are embarking on the unknown, the transition from their expensive and cramped New York lifestyle is a welcome change for both. The appeal of nature and seclusion win out, and the couple takes the plunge into Pluto. Referencing the music that the state is known for and the legendary works of William Faulkner, Grant acknowledges an early fascination with enigmatic Mississippi. He views the Delta

as a frontier to be explored and revealed. His natural curiosity and untarnished desire to know this exceptional place is quite refreshing. As the tale unwinds, the couple learns to live off the land and keep out varmints all the while encountering a very captivating cast of characters from farmers to eccentric millionaires. A famous face even makes a cameo within the book’s pages. “Mariah and I had been in the Delta for nearly a year, and we still didn’t feel like we understood the place well,” Grant writes toward the end of the book. “It was a feudal relic…It was a foretaste of a dystopian social future, when machines free

or over a decade, the Junior Auxiliary of DeSoto County has brought folks across the MidSouth together for its signature fundraising event. Formerly known as Catfish and Khakis, the JA’s revamped
Crown Benefit is now in its second year. On November 13, the Landers Center was transformed into a thing of the past, bringing speakeasy flavor
to a modern audience. Jeremy Shrader’s Hot Memphis Six had folks taking turns on the dance floor, and bids were flying for the group’s unique auction items. Photos by MIKE LEE

BENEFITS OF A DIGITAL MAMMOGRAM • Undergoing a digital mammogram is faster than a film mammogram, and results are immediately available after the procedure, which cuts down on waiting time.
• The images can be altered and adjusted to improve the brightness and contrast, making it easier to view differences in tissues.
• Because the images are stored digitally, they can be readily shared with other physicians.
• Digital mammography uses less radiation than film mammography.
• Computer-aided detection (CAD) technology, which uses digital images, can help radiologists detect breast cancer at its earliest stages.
