CASEY HILDER

editor’s letter

A Home in the South Ah, the homes issue. This lovingly crafted annual mainstay is all about the unique design and décor decisions that make our Southern homes so remarkable. This month marks my one-year anniversary as a homeowner, which makes Click’s annual celebration of Southern homes a little bit more special to me. It’s a weighty investment and the work never ends, but having a permanent place to plant my roots helps my sleep a lot better at night. We’ve highlighted three wildly different Mid-South homes that show off the best design and décor that the region has to offer, from the rustic trappings and family story that accompany the Millers’ quaint Lakeland, Tennessee, cabin (page 69) to the masterful woodworking and artsy fare on display at the Perry household (page 74) and the lavish lodgings of the Youngs’ home in the Gray’s Creek suburb of Hernando (page 80). In addition, we’ve got some expert advice from interior designer Ami Austin in this month’s featured interview on page 17, as well as an exclusive look inside this year’s St. Jude Dream home (page 26). St. Jude’s annual drawing for a fancy house has always struck me as a unique and exciting way to get people interested in fundraising efforts for one of the best and brightest organizations in the Mid-South, so kudos to them for keeping the giveaway going strong after all these years. This month also features a book review from inspiring author Julia Reed, of Elle Décor and Garden & Gun fame. If you haven’t picked up her latest book, South: Spirited Entertaining and High-Style Fun All Year Long, I urge you to give it a look — that thing’s basically the Southern hospitality handbook. And for those out there who aren’t into staying home this month, check out entertaining expert Michelle Hope’s article on Orange Beach, Alabama (page 89). So from all of us to all of you, remember that old adage from one Samuel Clemens: fill your homes with good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience. Read on,

Casey Hilder Editor

Editor's Note: The annual Watermelon Carnival (August 5-6) listed in last month's "2016 Summer Festival Guide" feature will take place in Water Valley, Mississippi, not Mize, Mississippi. We regret this error.

people CM: WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN? AA: I love every aspect of designing, creating and executing a design plan. Solving design problems is such a thrill to me. But best of all, my passion for interior design truly comes alive when a project is completed and everyone involved in the process is happy with the outcome.

AS PRINCIPAL DESIGNER AND PRESIDENT OF AN AWARD-WINNING interior design firm, Ami Austin is known for transforming homes and businesses around the country with unique, creative, and functional design elements. Her work has been featured in publications such as Memphis, Midsouth, Romantic Homes, Custom Home, Interior Design, among others, and she is frequently invited as a guest speaker for home design and home staging events nationwide. Her studio, P & B Design Source, is located in downtown Memphis, and is open to professional designers and the general public. There, visitors can view Austin’s unique design style through staged vignettes and, by appointment, seek her interior design guidance.

CM: IS THERE A PROJECT IN YOUR PORTFOLIO THAT IS PARTICULARLY UNIQUE? WHY? AA: I believe all my projects are unique. I do not think any project is representative of another, as they are all individually distinctive. A current project does come to mind however, unique in the sense that horses are my clients! I am designing a loft in a gorgeous stable, and I cannot wait to see the finished look. Before I started this design project, the existing stable was already magnificent for the horses! The addition of a performance and training arena brought about the need for more creature comfort of the human kind, which I designed as a loft. The loft has a grand view of the property, but the large windows and pitched ceilings brought a design challenge for furnishings, cooking and bathing. During the design process, I decided on a relaxed style by staying with four colors, enabling a clean look. I installed custom Murphy beds and included a sleeper sofa in a well-appointed seating area to allow for additional comfort and room for sleepy equestrians. The kitchen was redesigned with state-of-the-art appliances, forgediron chandeliers and custom cabinetry with perfectly fabricated granite, featuring waterfall edges to streamline the rustic, but elegant look. I incorporated sliding barn doors in the bath space, and completed the look by installing a copper soaking tub. CM: WHAT WAS THE BEST COMPLIMENT YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN ON ONE OF YOUR PROJECTS? AA: A referral. That is the best compliment. It is so humbling that a client likes your work enough that they want to share with someone else, by referring you to their friends and family.

18 JULY 2016 | myclickmag.com

CM: WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN "PROCESS"? AA: I begin my process by building a relationship with my client. It is important to make sure we see eye-to-eye, and that we understand the nature of the design project, i.e., perimeters of the job and overall expectations. Once this has been established, the rest of my process consists of following and executing the plan in the desired time frame and understood budget. CM: DESCRIBE THE “PERFECT” (OR FAVORITE) DESIGN PROJECT, FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE. AA: My perfect design project includes excitement around every aspect of the project. It is important to work together with a client, subcontractors, artisans, and everyone else involved, to make the perfect design project a reality. When everyone is excited about the project, and understands the desired final look, a perfect design project is the result. I always introduce an element of the outdoors to my kitchen projects. I love to incorporate life into kitchens by opening walls with windows to give an exterior view. Two kitchen design projects on which I worked featured such an element. For one client, my design team and I took out an entire brick wall, replacing the newly opened space with French doors. For another client, we removed the wall between the kitchen / breakfast area and the formal dining room. This permitted my client to have east and west views of the gorgeous property. CM: WHAT GOALS SHOULD SOMEONE HAVE WHEN REDESIGNING A HOME OR SPACE? AA: From social media to design magazines, there is inspiration to discover when looking to redesign a space. Pinterest and Houzz are great examples, and clipping pictures from magazines. To really understand what type of design makes the most sense and blends best in your home or space, put all your design inspirations together. Identify what you like and what is most appropriate for setting up your home, i.e., your preferred scale for the room or home and a predetermined budget, and you will result in redesigning an entire home or just one space that fits your lifestyle. CM: WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR JOB? AA: The most rewarding part of my job is forming genuine relationships with my clients. After starting off on a client-basis relationship, we always end up becoming good friends. Not only do I become a part of my clients’ families, but they become a part of my family, as well. I learned a lot through business organizational skills and accountability in my prior career in the demanding corporate world, but the creative aspect was missing. In the long run, managing my own business and having the ability to expand into areas without boundaries is what makes my days come alive with pleasure and satisfaction.

Living Colors Midtown coloring book artist named poster artist of 2016 Cooper-Young Festival Story by CHRISTINA MORGAN

UNTIL RECENTLY, COLORING WAS CONSIDERED AN ACTIVITY exclusive to one’s childhood years. But thanks to artists like Memphian Jenean Morrison, adults get to relive their youth. Designing coloring books for adults since 2012, Morrison is a pioneer of the popular trend hitting shelves worldwide. “I had the idea for a coloring book, researched the best way to produce and sell the book, then published it on Createspace within three weeks of having the idea,” she recalls. “By the time the craze hit the U.S. in early 2015, I’d already published six coloring books.” Today, Morrison has sold hundreds of thousands of books on Amazon, with more than a million copies in print in North America. Her books are also found in Brazil, France, Japan, Italy and Poland, and on Amazon’s Best-Seller list. “My best-selling book, Flower Designs Coloring Book, reached number 16 and it stayed in the top 100 for over eight weeks,” she explains. “Four of my books have also reached the Amazon top 100 in Italy, two of which have remained on the Best-Seller list for over six months.” An Oklahoma native, Morrison moved to Memphis after high school where she earned a communications degree from the University of Memphis before studying art and graphic design at Memphis College of Art. She worked with surface and textile designs for nearly a decade prior to stumbling into the coloring book world. “I’ve always loved to color,” she says. “The thing that sparked my interest in coloring books initially was that I came across a design-based coloring book I’d had as a child. I was instantly reminded of the joy of coloring and knew the moment I saw it that I wanted to make a coloring book.” Initially marketing to her fan base created from her fabrics work, Morrison saw sales double each month as more and more people caught onto her books. Though she admits to knowing there was a market for her product, Morrison “had no idea it would grow into the market that exists today.” Excited to have followed her passion, Morrison says she most enjoys the floral designs best. “I like designing pages with geometrics, repeat patterns and mandalas, but my favorites are the pages featuring birds, butterflies and flowers.”

As an artist, Morrison’s art ranges from rugs, stationary and scrapbooking kits to paintings adorning the walls of hundreds of Vegas hotel rooms. And she’s even been featured twice in New American Paintings, a juried exhibition-in-print, an honor that led to exposure and connections, she explains. Though of her accolades, it’s her coloring books and fabric work she relishes. “In both cases, I am sending my art into the world almost half-finished and the consumer takes my work and runs with it,” she explains. “It is a real thrill to see pages that people have colored in my books and to see quilts and garments people have made with my fabrics. It feels like a genuine collaboration with the consumer, and I love it.” Morrison’s accomplishments have garnered yet another honor this year, as she was named the poster artist for this year’s Cooper Young Festival. Tamara Cook, executive director of the Cooper Young Business Association, notes that poster artists must live and work in the CY area and the winner is chosen by a committee. “Jenean’s coloring books have gone global this year, and we are excited about a local artist’s international success,” she continues. “We thought she would give us a new twist on the festival poster we haven’t seen before.” Morrison’s poster will be unveiled Aug. 6 at CoWork Memphis, located at 902 South Cooper St., from 6 to 8 p.m. during the Cooper Young Festival Kickoff Party/Poster Unveiling. Offering only a hint, Morrison says this year’s poster will incorporate many of the things she loves about Cooper Young, and those familiar with her work will be able to pick up on her style. “I’m happy that I’ll be joining a long list of awesome artists who’ve created the festival posters before me,” she concludes. myclickmag.com | JULY 2016 23

Life of the Party Native Southerner and lifestyle expert Julia Reed shows readers how to throw the ultimate party in her recently released book Julia Reed’s South: Spirited Entertaining and High-Style Fun All Year Long Review by SHANA RALEY-LUSK

AS CONTRIBUTING EDITOR FOR BOTH Garden and Gun and Elle Decor, Julia Reed has become a well-respected expert in the art of hosting a memorable party. In her years of entertaining, she has collected a great many tips and tricks which she showers upon her readers in her new book, Julia Reed’s South. Better yet, she manages to offer new spins and fresh takes on beloved traditions which are sure to inspire party-givers everywhere. 24 JULY 2016 | myclickmag.com

“I grew up in the Mississippi Delta, where entertaining at home was a way of life by necessity,” she writes in the opening pages. Reed grew up in Greenville and recalls those early experiences which shaped her style when it comes to creating a great event. “But, for the most part, if we wanted to have some fun, we learned early on how to make it ourselves. Fortunately, I had some very good teachers,” she adds. She credits her parents and their zest for entertaining with inspiring in her a lifelong love of creating special gatherings. Reed shares with readers her early entertaining experiences, most notably her first at the tender age of eleven, which was a sweet dinner party for her mother complete with quiche and creative party favors. From there, she grew to love the art of being a hostess and the rest is history, though she continued to be influenced by other entertaining gurus along the way; particularly Lee Bailey, whose book was such an inspiration to her in the beginning due to his own deeply Southern spirit. The book features eleven irresistible seasonal events complete with recipes, table setting and wine tips, and plenty of anecdotal tales from the author’s Mississippi background. “It’s Finally Spring Lunch” and “A Fall Hunt Breakfast” are just two of the offerings. Many of the delicious-looking recipes are pictured and truly jump off the page for readers to enjoy. The photographer, Paul Costello, is a lifestyle photographer whose work has appeared in many other publications, as well. Reed says that the entire entertaining process should be a source of joy, for both party-givers and party-goers alike. “The main thing is that it all should be a pleasure — the planning, the list-making of guests and groceries, the decoration of your table, even if you have time only for a bowl of fruit or a couple of low cylinders of grocery store roses,” she explains. “Celebrations, whether you’re throwing a picnic on a sandbar or having a ‛visiting dignitary’ to dinner, should not be about pomp or pretension, or even precision. A certain amount of pizzazz never hurts, and neither does generosity — not in terms of how fine the wine or expensive the caviar, but in terms of spirit,” she continues. Mainly, she suggests creating a relaxed vibe to the celebration by being relaxed yourself. “If the host or hostess is relaxed, the guests will be too,” she notes. For those most important and special of occasions, the book includes a menu for what it coins “The Visiting Dignitary Dinner.” Reed says that this is the ideal menu to mark important occasions and milestone. “Whether you’re talking about matters of state or simply celebrating the accomplishments of someone you love, the food shouldn’t be the point,” she writes. “It should, however, be delicious in that old-fashioned, glamorous way my mother has always had a handle on. This menu is a prime example, which is why I think it has stood the test of time” she adds. The offerings on this particular menu include rib-eye roast, mustard mousse, horseradish mousse, scalloped oysters, rice pilaf, and more. It’s the perfect meal for meshing down-home hospitality with a little something extra for special guests or important achievements that call for a party. In addition to her aforementioned positions, Julia Reed also writes a column for Southern Living and contributes to the Wall Street Journal. She is also the author of five books.

Lavish Living This year’s St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway features Arlington Mansion, combining class and the latest design trends Story by DOUG GILLON | Photos courtesy of BEN FANT

26 JULY 2016 | myclickmag.com

ST. JUDE’S 2016 MEMPHIS DREAM HOME IS MORE than 5,000 square feet of modern, spacious Southern living sitting just inside the second turn of a swanky Arlington subdivision. While you won’t see Chip and Joanna Gaines or the Property Brothers on site, any HGTV watcher will recognize thoughtfully executed layout and décor based on trends often featured on the network. Lofty, vaulted 10-foot ceilings occupy the entire first floor, which features a three-room open concept kitchen, dining room and living room/den, with the areas separated only by a small corner column. The concept creates a huge space in which to enter the house, with immaculate stonework occupying the back wall of the living room immediately to the left, and just-the-right-kind of rustic wood paneling decorating the far right wall, the back of the dining room.

With open concepts, an elegant mixture of antique style and modern chic, punctuated with state-of-the art appliances and some of the biggest closets ever seen, the house is clearly planned and built not only with the most modern amenities, but also 21-st century living sensibilities. A combination of longevity and extensive partnership makes the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway one of the largest single-event fundraisers St. Jude runs. Since its inception in 1991, this recurring dream home program has given away more than 400 homes and raised more than $325 million for St. Jude. “We are so thankful to the builders and contractors who donate their time and the partners who donate their products to make this beautiful home possible,” said Richard Shadyac, Jr, President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Thanks to their generous support, and the support of those who purchase tickets, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food, so they can focus on helping their child live.” This year’s dream home giveaway features more than 30 homes in cities across the country, including, of course, the one in Arlington, which has a massive master bathroom. It’s one of four in the house, all of which are attached to one of the house’s four bedrooms. The master and guest rooms and bathrooms are downstairs, with two “kids” bedrooms with attached bathrooms upstairs. The master bath features a walk-in, closet-sized shower with two wall-mounted showerheads, a sliding bar showerhead, and a far wall punctuated with four body mist shower sprays. A tornado shelter is installed in the floor of the spacious three-car garage and the nearby laundry room features more cabinet space than a post office. Heading outside usually starts through one of the house’s four porches, the largest of which features its own outdoor fireplace and fans.

Vein Treatment:

Sushma Parekh

MD-Board Certified Radiologist, Owner | Vein Memphis, LLP

The Problem

Contemplate this statistic: 75 percent of women over the age of 40 with two or more children will suffer from venous insufficiency at some time in their lives. This manifests itself in a myriad of ways — cramping legs, spasms, restless leg syndrome, swelling of ankles, hyperpigmentation of lower extremities, ulcers in legs, spider veins, and varicose veins. Most of these symptoms often get overlooked or misdiagnosed as aging, fatigue, or ignored as cosmetic issues even by physicians.

In fact, these are caused by a real condition called venous reflux or venous insufficiency, and can have severe and chronic debilitating consequences if left untreated.

The Solution

At Vein Memphis, Dr. Sushma Parekh and her highly trained and experienced staff can diagnose the root cause of these symptoms and have the most technologically advanced equipment to treat this condition. Fellowship-trained in diagnostic ultrasound guided interventional

procedures, Dr. Parekh has helped hundreds of patients in the area with varicose veins and venous insufficiency using the “Endovenous Laser Ablation Treatment” procedure that eliminates the root cause of this entity. This is considered a medically necessary procedure and is covered by most insurance carriers. The clinic also performs sclerotherapy for spiders veins and is Memphis’ only All-Woman Team in this field.

A Piece of History Jamie & Evan Miller’s Lakeland, Tennessee, cabin home blends rustic Southern charm with modern sensibilities

F

OR JAMIE AND EVAN MILLER, the cabin nestled on a ½ acre patch of land in West Tennessee’s Lakeland Estates neighborhood is more than a home — it’s history. The cabin, which was purchased by the couple in February of 2015, was built by Jamie’s ancestors, the Reed Family, in 1837 near Henderson, Tennessee — about 70 miles away from its current location. The house was moved to its current surroundings in 1978 by Jamie’s uncle, Tony Reed. “He was an adrenaline junky and kind of an adventurous guy,” she says. “So he just kind of looked at it like another adventure.” Reed and several others disassembled the cabin piece by piece before making the trek to Lakeland to reassemble and rebuild. Jamie and Evan rediscovered the cabin by coincidence years later when the newly married couple purchased it from relatives with intentions of restoring some of its former glory. The unique tastes of Evan, an industrial engineer and Jamie, a yoga instructor, blend together in this surprisingly spacious five bedroom, three bathroom estate. A sprawling 42-foot front porch with a hanging swing welcomes guests to a quaint sunroom entryway and roomy kitchen.

The original blueprints for Evan and Jamie Miller's family home on display in the hallway. The cabin, which was built in 1837 in Henderson, Tennessee, now sits in Lakeland, Tennessee, just outside Memphis.

The refurbished kitchen, stocked with an array of culinary tools, is currently the most modern area of the house, with its granitetop kitchen island and whitewashed fireplace. “It’s nice to have such a big space for cooking,” Jamie says. “It’s got a lot of unique, great features and it’s probably my current favorite room in the house.” High arched ceilings with stretching beams loom over the living room, which also features a fireplace and walls lined with 14-inch poplar logs, lain with a process known as chinking. Faint and yellowed newspaper clippings from 1901 are still visible on the walls. While they were once necessary for insulation, they remain now as a curiosity and throwback to home’s humble roots.

â–˛ Memories of former owners William and Anna Reed permeate the household.

72 JULY 2016 | myclickmag.com

A restored table crafted with old barnwood and a towering buffet serve as the centerpieces to the rustic dining room. The massive buffet nearly proved impossible for the pair to move in, but with some clever techniques and a bit of elbow grease, they were able to manage. A portrait of third-generation Reeds, William and Anna, hangs on a nearby wall. The master bedroom includes a “Romeo and Juliet”-style balcony, offering a perfect view of a nearby 200-acre lake – the perfect relaxing spot for a morning cup of coffee. This room also boasts three walk-in closets and an expansive master bathroom. Future plans for the Millers’ dream cabin include replacing several doors with sliding barn-style entryways, repurposing the dual lofts above the living room to suit Evan’s Mancavein-the-making and Jamie’s quiet painting space, and reworking a pair of downstairs guest bedrooms to fit the look of the rest of the house.

Vintage Chic

MODERN APPEAL A study in contrast at the Perry household in Nesbit, Mississippi

W

ith its white-brick façade and dramatic stone

turret entrance, Paul and Jodi Perry’s Chateauesque style home is a study in marked contrast. Located in Nesbit, MS, it epitomizes a vintage chic aesthetic — from its reclaimed wood elements to décor the couple has put together from their visits to thrift stores and antique shops throughout the Mid-South area.

myclickmag.com | JULY 2016 75

“I do a lot of antiquing and find stuff everywhere,” says Paul, a tattooist and owner of Purethirteen located in Horn Lake, Mississippi. “That’s what we do when we’re off work, go to random little shops or hole-in-thewall places to find something.” And just like searching through time-worn pieces that others have discarded, walking through the Perrys’ home is an exercise in discovering artfully crafted vintage treasure. On one side of the main entryway, large gothic window frames hold wrought iron grids. Beneath the main room’s modern black chandeliers, a large pyrography clock face sits on a custom-stained concrete floor, accentuated by an antique white shutter and wooden wagon wheel. “We’re waiting on wooden chandeliers that they make out of wine barrels,” says Paul. His wife, Jodi, notes that the room’s look has changed dramatically. “It was black in here originally, and I bought all the furniture before we moved in,” she says. “When everything got delivered, nothing fit, so I sold it all.” To the left of the main room is a reclaimed barn door leading to the master bedroom and master bath, which features a stone and tile walkaround, doorless shower; his-and-hers vanities; and a Jacuzzi tub. To the right, the kitchen continues the theme of stark contrast, featuring custom cabinetry by Bubba Black of Bubba Black Originals, out of Hernando, MS. “We have a lot of pieces from Bubba Black Originals,” says Paul. “Bubba did all our cabinetry and he built our tables.” One particular table that catches visitors’ eye is the focal point of the sitting room located just off of the open kitchen. “I found this old door in Memphis, downtown somewhere… I forget where… but it’s an old door from the 1800s,” says Paul. “I took it to Bubba and we made it into a coffee table. I find the pieces, then we come up with the design together.” 76 JULY 2016 | myclickmag.com

Past a wine station (also built by Bubba Black), the formal dining room features white chairs and a darkstained wooden table accented by smoky gray walls. Moving back through the entry and ascending hardwood plank stairs to the upstairs bedrooms, a sitting area displays a wood-paneled wall that contains a collection of the various pieces of wood used throughout the home, with an added splash of teal. The couple’s favorite spots in their new home are downstairs, however, and it’s easy to see why when discovering the home’s more secluded, surprising nooks. Exiting through the open kitchen, a large patio surrounds an in-ground pool, complete with outdoor kitchen and TV sitting area for entertaining larger groups of people. Here, the dark tones of reclaimed wood are subdued by a paradise of palm trees and vivid, teal accents, recalling elements of the couple’s favorite state outside of Mississippi — Florida. “Florida is like our second home, so we brought Florida here,” says Paul, while Jodi admits that she spends most of her time at the pool when not working.

As for Paul’s favorite place around their new home, he’s quick to point out, “definitely mine’s at the barn.” And the barn — located just off of the swimming pool area — is a throwback to some other time and place where friends congregate over drinks, and a 1948 Wurlitzer juke box lights up a neon corner that’s filled with vintage signage. “These doors came out of a plantation house in Tupelo from the 1800s,” says Paul, referring to the main doors leading into the barn. “My brother did the demolition and cut the door out. I had to replace a few pieces of the glass. I tried to take a few out when I was re-staining it but it was so old, I had to replace it.” Other features of the barn include a long wooden bar that was part of the now-closed Butcher Shop in downtown Memphis, along with hand-hewn beams, also from the 1800s. According to Paul, a friend’s great-great grandparents had them in a barn that was torn down. “I know people who tell me about these things, and whenever I find it, I’ll say ‘hey I want that.’”

Social Design Form meets function in a home built for entertaining STORY BY TONYA THOMPSON PHOTOS BY YEN STUDIOS myclickmag.com | JULY 2016 81

R

Representing one of the more formal versions of the French Eclectic style, the home of Ronnie and Pat Young is located on two-plus acres of the gently rolling hills of Gray’s Creek subdivision in Hernando. With a symmetrical front façade and monolithic finish, the house’s steep roof line with arched-top dormers projecting through the cornice create a striking first impression. A custom-designed iron and glass front door opens to the entry hall, with travertine and slate cabochons and an iron stair rail designed by Pat Young.

82 JULY 2016 | myclickmag.com

When building their home, the Youngs wanted a house that was designed for entertaining, with a long center hall that serves as a walkway for all of the downstairs rooms. Additionally, outdoors on an expansive patio overlooking a stocked lake, comfortable seating welcomes guests, along with a teak table that will seat 12, a large mosaic-topped table, and a pair of faux bois benches. “In the six and a half years that we have lived here,” says Pat, “we have hosted birthday parties for friends and family, retirement parties, many dinner parties, Sunday School get-togethers, teas for little girls and their mothers and grandmothers, Woman’s Club parties, garden club meetings, receptions for seminar attendees, and Christmas Open Houses for over 100 people.” As a National Garden Club accredited flower show judge and 3rd Vice President of the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Pat has had multiple opportunities to make use of a house designed specifically to entertain. Focusing on large common rooms that flow from one to another and a dining room big enough to host extended family for special meals, the Youngs put in a butler’s pantry with a Dutch door to be used as a bar area to serve beverages to a large group. Beside it, the 17-foot vaulted ceilings of the hearth room add additional space for larger gatherings of friends and family, with solid timber trusses hewn by master craftsman Wade Burrus, owner of Architectural Timberworks. The hearth room also contains a French buffet au deux corps, an antique French tall case clock, an antique English pine sofa table, an antique French trumeau, and an antique English satinwood writing table. The cricket table there is made from old, weathered pine. “I like wood pieces that have the patina of age,” says Pat. “I like a thing with character, whether from its age or from the craftsmanship of the person who made it and the quality of its materials.”

ASTEP Sleep Technologist Training Education Program The field of sleep disorders medicine or polysomnography continues to grow along with the demand for highly skilled well- trained technologists in this field. To keep pace with this growth, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has developed the Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (A-STEP). Designed to promote the standardization of sleep technology training, the program has two specific educational goals: To serve as an initiative to promote the field-wide improvement of sleep technologist training programs.

Mantels in the home were fabricated from a mix of reconstituted limestone and concrete by Mark Pepke of European Stone Werks. All downstairs floors are made of natural materials, including limestone in the hearth room and kitchen areas, travertine in the master bath and two downstairs half baths, and wide oak floors elsewhere. To provide additional comfort for visiting guests during the winter months, the hearth room and kitchen floors are heated, as well as the floors in the master bath. The kitchen features cabinets to the ceiling designed by Pat and made by Patrick Montgomery. The hood over the cook top is limestone, with a backsplash of tiles hand-made in California. Highlighted in the dining room are an antique English mahogany server, a Chippendale table and chairs, a French chandelier purchased on Magazine Street in New Orleans, and a handmade Persian Heriz rug. The living room features an antique English mahogany secretary/bookcase, a rustic antique French dough table, two coffee tables by Amy Howard (an artisan commissioned to do a coffee table for former first lady Laura Bush), an antique French carved oak credenza, an antique Italian chandelier, and a handmade Persian Mahal rug.

To equip students with the foundational understanding and practical skills essential for a successful career in the profession of sleep technology.

A Family Building for Families

Reflecting Ronnie Young’s love of the outdoors, the study has walls paneled in glazed alder by Lou Kerns of Kerns-Wilcheck in Memphis, an antique English oak chest of drawers, and a handmade Persian Heriz rug. The study bookcases hold part of a collection of Imari porcelain, contrasted by skull mounts of gemsbok from a safari the Youngs took to South Africa. “I have picked up small items to remember our travels,” says Pat. “A smooth rock from the Snake River in Wyoming that we rafted, a small Toby mug from Ireland to add to my collection, a hand-made basket from South Africa, and linens from France.” The master bedroom has a customdesigned, hand painted bed by Bella Cosa Studio in Madison, MS. It also features an antique French enfilade (a long buffet with connecting compartments), and an antique French wine-tasting table. The master bath has a salon tub and contains an antique English wire garden bench and chair. The two half baths downstairs have cabinets also made by Lou Kerns. Art in the home includes a large barn painting by Freda Hamm purchased 28 years ago; an oil painting by Russian artist Yasharel Manzy; handmade paper reliefs by Blanche Batson of Jackson, MS; a watercolor by George Luks; an abstract wax encaustic by Memphian Mary Long; and most recently, an oil painting by Emily Ozier of Memphis. Neutral wall colors provide a backdrop for the home’s art and for the stained knotty alder doors throughout. “Over the years, I have collected the things that I like,” says Pat, “whether from a local antique store or from Atlanta or New Orleans. To me, home is where you are surrounded by the people that you love and the things that you love. I am still looking for that special ‘piece’ to go in certain spots in certain rooms. A home is like a person, always changing and growing and maturing.”

ENTERTAINING

A Shore Thing The serene trappings of Orange Beach, Alabama, make for the perfect Southern getaway Story by MICHELLE HOPE

myclickmag.com | JULY 2016 89

entertaining

BEACHIN’ With summer in full effect, family vacations are a top priority for most people wanting to take advantage of the time kids are out of school. Like many, I have grown up going to the beach every summer on family vacations, so I am always trying to find something new and better than what we have done before. This year, we decided to explore Orange Beach, Alabama, to kick off the summer break. Orange Beach was very appealing for many reasons and the easy six-and-a -half hour drive from the Memphis area topped the list. We couldn’t wait to discover the 32 miles of soft white sand and clear waters that edge Alabama’s southern border to the Gulf of Mexico.

STAY’N Kid friendly-resort style accommodations were the at the top of our priority list. So, I began my search for the perfect resort. Turquoise Place did not disappoint! As the largest and most up-to-date vacation rental resort Orange Beach has to offer, The Turquoise Place offers breathtaking views of the Gulf and plenty to do for everyone. It’s located in the heart of Orange Beach, so you have easy access to everything you need — which is very little, depending on your vacation style. The spacious condos offer panoramic views of the coast; three, four, or five bedroom units that all have their own bathrooms; stateof-the-art appliances in the full-sized kitchens; wet bars; fireplaces; flat-screen TVs; and private beachside balconies with hot tubs and grills. Multiple pools indoor and out keep you from ever feeling over crowded. Beach access is only a quick elevator ride down and a few feet away. So getting your toes in the sand is effortless, unlike many condo-style vacations. Prickett Properties helped me book the resort and took care of everything, so all we had to do was show up. We really enjoyed the waterproof wristbands that replaced our room keys. One more step taken to make our vacation stress free. A few of my other personal favorites about the resort were the poolside bar/grill that offered lunch and yummy frozen cocktails for purchase, and the live entertainment during the week. There were plenty of comfy lounge chairs and umbrellas available for rent on the beach at a reasonable rate daily or weekly, which was also nice since we opted not to haul our own. 90 JULY 2016 | myclickmag.com

entertaining EAT’N With such nice accommodations, we wanted to stay in for dinner some and utilize the balcony grill. Lartigue's Seafood Market — a family owned and operated business specializing in locally caught seafood became our go-to shop for fresh seafood. We stopped in twice- once for fresh shrimp and homemade slaw and then again to pick up loads of steamed seafood for a delicious and hassle-free dinner with friends (ready in minutes)! This is the way to go if you want to entertain or enjoy fresh seafood without putting a big dent in your budget. They offer an online menu for easy ordering, so make plans to pick up dinner at least once. For a casual family dinner out or a date night, Shipp's Harbour Grill is a must! The coastal-cottage-style restaurant boasts some of the best views and the largest menu in the area. As we watched the harbour lights come to life, we enjoyed cocktails and dinner. Shipp's takes reservations, which is hard to find at restaurants in the area. You can make your reservation and check out the menu online before you dine. We can't wait to go back! For all those things we forgot and to stock our kitchen with breakfast and snacks for the vacation, we were just a short drive away from Publix, a local grocery store. It's so nice to have everything you need close by. It truly makes a vacation easy and stress free. The Turquoise Place was the ideal resort for our easy and luxurious vacation. It will be hard to stay anywhere else in Orange Beach when we go back, that is for sure. They do have great deals during the off season and last-minute specials, which helps accommodate a wide range of budgets. The weather in Orange Beach is great almost year round too! The lazy river is heated during cooler months and they have the indoor heated pool year round. All of this helps make Orange Beach and Turquoise Place a winner no matter what time of year you plan to go. We are already planning to head back toward the end of summer — it was that good!

“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day,” the ancient proverb begins. “Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Finishing the academic year with 100 percent retention rate, the 13 students who began pursuing their GED and Career Certificate concurrently in January through the MI-BEST program at Northwest Mississippi Community College are beginning to understand they may never have to worry about putting food on their table again. According to MI-BEST Student Navigator, Rachelle Washington, the program offers students with no GED or high school diploma the opportunity to be a full-time college student with all the rights and privileges of Northwest students. Prior to graduation, these students can expect to have earned their GED, 15-16 college credit hours, a manufacturing credential or nursing assistant certification, job shadowing, internships and even employment opportunities. “I have two children now, and I figured I needed to get on the ball, get my GED and get my life on track,” said Amanda Soriano, a MI-BEST manufacturing pathway student from Coldwater. Soriano was the first among her cohort to earn her GED and was offered a job in April at Schulz Xtruded Products, LP at their Hernando shipping location at a starting rate of $12.50, complete with free health insurance, six paid vacation days, nine paid holidays and the opportunity to enroll in the company’s retirement plan. Students on the manufacturing pathway will be able to work in a variety of manufacturing environments, because their curriculum covers such a broad range of subjects, like lean manufacturing, just-in-time, blue print reading and precision instruments—skills that are in high demand by advanced manufacturing set-ups across the Northwest district and the Mid-South. Northwest’s Career, Technical and Workforce Division offers credit and non-credit programs for the manufacturing and distribution industries, including HVACR, Industrial Electronics Engineering Technology, Precision Manufacturing and Machining Technology, Networking, Programming, Welding and Business and Office-related Technology, in addition to programs in the service sector and health care.Placement in MI-BEST is determined by assessment scores on the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) in reading, math and language, so early outreach to ABE staff is encouraged.
