UP FRONT ARTS, CULTURE AND PERSONALITIES
Making a Mystery Longmire creator Craig Johnson brings the dusty township of Absaroka County to Hernando, Mississippi Interview by CASEY HILDER

people written twelve books, so I’m okay with that. It’s like having two separate but equal universes. CM: This is your second time speaking at the Hernando Public Library. How familiar are you with the great state of Mississippi? CJ: A great deal more recently... I’ve been to Mississippi a number of times in the last few years. With the success of the books and the TV show there are a lot more fans of Walt Longmire, the sheriff of the least populated county in the least populated state in America. What I’ve noticed is that there are a number of universalities that seem to speak to people all over the country, a rural language that appears to know no geographic boundary. The funny thing is, I’ll get an email about the grumpy ladies at the courthouse from a reader in Biloxi
T
HE EXPLOITS OF SHERIFF WALT LONGMIRE sprang from the mind of bestselling author and Wyoming native Craig Johnson more than a decade ago, but you could say the world-weary western lawman has been there all along. With more than a dozen novels under his belt and the Longmire television series currently in its fifth season, Johnson brings his unique candor to the Hernando Public Library on March 1.
asking if I’ve been to their courthouse — it’s a universal.
CM: What can we expect from your talk at Hernando Public Library? CJ: I’m not sure, but they may run an episode from the TV show, Longmire and then one of last year’s publications was a collection of short stories about Walt, so I’ll probably read one of those, tell stories, and answer questions. It gets a little freewheeling with me, so it’s hard to say what direction we’ll go. It’s always a fun crowd at the Hernando event and they won’t let me get away with being boring...

CM: What can we expect from your next novel? CJ: In the next one a friend of Walt’s, Wyoming Highway Patrolman Rosey Wayman, is transferred to the imposing Wind River Canyon, an area the troopers refer to as no-man’s-land because of the lack of radio communication, and she starts receiving officer needs assistance calls. The problem? They’re coming from Bobby Womack, a legendary Arapaho patrolman who met a fiery death in the canyon almost a half-century ago. In an investigation that spans this world and the next, Sheriff Walt Longmire and good friend Henry Standing Bear take on a case that pits them against a supernatural Western legend — The Highwayman. CM: Longmire will debut its fifth season via Netflix, a strategy that has worked to revive cult classics and breathe new life into older series. How did the series’ warm reception and resurgence make you feel? CJ: Actually, we’re more of a miracle than that. There really aren’t that many shows that have been revived on Netflix — The Killing, which was resurrected for only one season, and Arrested Development are the ones that come to mind. We’re now a Netflix Original, which puts us in a fairly unique category — but then this was the first time a successful series, in fact the highest-rated series in a network’s history, had ever been cancelled. So Netflix realized this was a unique opportunity and jumped on it. As to my personal feelings, I’m tickled to death. The producers, directors, cast, and crew have all become friends and I hated the thought that all that work coming to a close, so I’m pretty happy that we’re trending on Netflix practically every night.

Further, Tina speaks to fans in a video, sharing remembrances of Nutbush and the Flagg Grove School. The opening of the museum has made a huge economic impact on Brownsville. Last year, guests from more than 40 countries stopped by to take a tour. “We like to brag that you can see the King and Queen right here in West Tennessee.” Outlaw-Clark says. The Tina Turner Museum is one of the stops along the Americana Music Triangle, that encompasses the area between Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans. Working together with other points of interest, the museum is able to offer music enthusiasts a unique experience where Tina’s life began. The Tina Turner Museum at Flagg Grove School is a must-see for music fans interested in learning a little more about one of the world’s best-selling music artists, the queen of rock ‘n’ roll. Whether you fell in love with Tina during her early duo accomplishments or through her mainstream solo success, her stage presence, energy and dynamic vocals cannot be denied. Perhaps it’s the pulse of jazz in the air, or the rhythmic churn of the riverboats, or the warm winds that swoop the levee, but there’ a hint of mystery surrounding us. Something has charged the marrow walled within my bones. Pay attention, it says. And so I do.” Despite this presentiment, Amanda can’t prevent the unimaginable — Sarah, her best friend’s daughter, and Amanda’s own daughter Ellie’s best friend, disappears from the bathroom of the always-crowded Café du Monde. Did she fall into the river? Was she taken? The backpack Sarah was carrying is left behind in the bathroom—an ominous indication that Sarah did not simply wander away from her classmates. The girls and their classmates have just had the last golden hours of innocent childhood ripped away. At first, Amanda has difficulty processing that what happened is even real: “I run scenes through my mind like

Why didn’t Sarah come back from that restroom? Why did she leave the backpack? Where in the world can she be? Amanda was supposed to be keeping her eye on Sarah at the busy cafe, and her daughter, Ellie, was with her just before she disappeared. Ingredients: 1 Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 4-5 green figs, sliced ½ cup Calvados 1 bottle chilled Prosecco
Directions: 1. Place the apples in a pitcher and add the lemon juice. Immediately toss the slices with the juice. (You don’t want brown apples in your sangria, people). Add the figs and Calvados, and gently stir to combine, being careful not to smush the figs. Cover the pitcher with plastic or a lid and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. 2. Pour the Prosseco over the fruit in the pitcher. Lightly stir. 3. Pour your sangria into glasses with ice, making sure to add a few pieces of fruit to each glass.

Now in the last couple of years, there’s been a resurgence of the downtown area.” While Calico Rock is a much quieter place than it once was, there are thousands of square miles of adventure happening just beyond its limestonegraced doorstep. And after a day of trout fishing, spelunking, mountain biking, or riding along curvy roads on motorcycles, visitors can return to the gem of a ghost town that seems to be coming back to life again.

The Last Resort Looking for the perfect romantic getaway this spring? Look no farther than the Caribbean paradise of Barbados! Story by MICHELLE HOPE
Click magazine | MARCH 2016 73
entertaining YOUR FUTURE PARADISE IS SITUATED ON the pristine white sands of the Dover Beach in Saint Lawrence Gap, right where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic. The all-new and all-inclusive retreat of Sandals Barbados offers undeniable luxury with inventive accommodations spanning three unique villages. Leave the kids at home — this adultsonly resort is sure to meet all your expectations while you explore the 60 beaches across 70 square miles. The pristine island settings boast more than 3000 hours of annual sunshine, so don’t sweat the weather. Without question, Barbados is the most “British” island in the Caribbean. Afternoon tea is a ritual, cricket is the local pastime and getting dolled up for dinner is a firmly entrenched tradition — however this Caribbean paradise is hardly stuffy. Barbados is more of a sophisticated tropical island with a rich history and something to suit every taste and pocketbook. You will want to plan accordingly so that you can take advantage of all it has to offer. Here are some of the perks of a Sandals Barbados Get A Way!
ALL INCLUSIVE, ALL THE WAY The main benefit in staying at an all-inclusive resort is that you do not need to worry about cash throughout your stay and therefore if you are on vacation you won’t have to worry about over spending and sticking to a budget. Leave your concerns and cash behind. All-inclusive means everything you need. Entertainment, food and drinks (including alcohol) and your luxury accom-

entertaining KICK IT UP A NOTCH! Want to add even more luxury to your getaway? We recommend the Butler level accommodations. A Sandals Suite, complete with your own personal butler, is the ultimate indulgence. Your wish is their command, with the uncompromising attention of a personal butler trained to the highest standards by the elite Guild of Professional English Butlers, you will be pampered throughout your stay in extraordinary ways. Twenty-four hour room service offers a bevy of perks, including unpacking and packing your luggage, attending to wardrobe, and serving a glorious meal on your terrace, to name a few. The Love Nest Suites are the absolute best but if your budget doesn’t quite allow for a suite, don’t worry! Even the least costly rooms at this resort will exceed your expectations.
ADVENTURE ABOUND Known as the shipwreck capitol of the Caribbean, a diving expedition or deep sea fishing trip will allow you to explore it all. Aside from underwater activities, you can enjoy hiking or ziplining through the dense tropical forest or explore the water carved caverns of Harrison’s Cave. Discover the vibrancy and charm of a lively destination along with the warmth of the Bajan people. If that doesn’t suit your taste — Barbados happens to be the home of the world’s oldest commercial Rum distiller. As the birthplace of the Caribbean’s favorite liquor and a fundamental part of the nation’s culture, you can tour and taste all that they have to offer.

Shallow breathing increases carbon dioxide in the blood and increases anxiety and fatigue, all of which worsen skin conditions. Deep breathing also helps to activate the lymphatic system, which detoxifies blood. Try deep breathing while practicing the chill out tip! 78 MARCH 2016 | Click magazine
