Since starting her business in 2012, Wynne was awarded Austin’s Rising Fashion Star during the 2014 Austin Fashion Week and has been featured in publications like Southern Living, Audrey, and Mississippi Magazine. Celebrity fans of her line include Kyle Richards of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”, who has been spotted wearing the Cloud 9 Clutch around Los Angeles.
Click Magazine: What inspired you to start your handbag line? Kelly Wynne: I have always had a love for fashion, but never really envisioned myself as a designer when I was younger. In high school and especially college, I grew to love handbags and that’s when designing came into play. I would always accessorize my friends for every event, so I became known as the “Accessories Queen.” When I was little, I wanted to be an art teacher and I have always been passionate about creating, whether it’s painting, building something out of 3D materials, scrapbooking, etc. Little did I know this passion would lead me to designing handbags. I made several connections through the University of Mississippi and was able to land a great job immediately after college working for a boutique PR firm in Dallas. The environment was fast paced and ever changing, but I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do forever. Was designing handbags a realistic job with a clear-cut path? Definitely not, but I couldn’t shake the desire. CM: How do you oversee day-to-day activities with your company? KW: There is never a dull moment at Kelly Wynne Headquarters. People always ask what a typical day is like for me, but no day is ever the same. I honestly never know what each week may hold. It’s important for me to start out my mornings with quiet time to prepare me for any challenges or successes that might come my way. I may have the most rewarding day ever receiving positive 18 SEPTEMBER 2016 | myclickmag.com
feedback from a customer about her Kelly Wynne bag, or I may have a discouraging day putting out fires with the manufacturer. Being the boss means your responsibilities are endless, and I have to be ready to change gears at any moment and handle anything thrown my way. CM: What are some unique characteristics that set your bags apart? KW: Kelly Wynne handbags are proudly made in the USA. This classifies us among a very small, select list of designers. Our handbags are known for their bold prints and use of mixed materials and metallics. CM: What inspired your fall collection? KW: The Heartbeat Collection was inspired by the emotions associated with making a bold or daring move in life. Since people picture the city as a place where dreams become reality, I felt inspired by the characteristics of iconic cities: sleek silhouettes, dark shadows and bright lights. I want women to not only wear their Kelly Wynne handbags, but dare to do anything their heart desires.
CM: What advice could you give to inspire young women wanting to pursue a similar career? KW: The biggest obstacle you can run into is doubt and fear of failure. Overcoming that initial fear that is created by that doubt was the biggest challenge, but one I was able to overcome with encouragement from friends, family, and the reliance on my faith. There are so many ups and downs in this business, but you have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
CM: What are your goals for the future? KW: We are opening our very first Kelly Wynne brick-and-mortar store this fall in Austin, Texas. I never in a million years thought we would be opening a store after three years in business, but here we are now. This has been a long-term goal of mine that is coming to life earlier than I expected. I’m thrilled customers will now be able to experience the Kelly Wynne brand in person.

Linocut Legends Sally Busby shares East Grove Studio’s new collection of Southern-inspired literary art Story by TONYA THOMPSON

that she chose her alma mater because of William Faulkner. Then, a Master’s degree in Southern studies from Ole’ Miss put Busby, a Memphis native, on a path to teaching 7th-grade English in Memphis’ intellectually gifted program. Now, in her spare time — as if such a thing existed for teachers — she operates East Grove Studio (eastgrovestudio.com), selling a line of handmade linocut prints of authors who have particularly inspired her, including Faulkner. “I think O'Connor explains Southern writers best,” says Busby, using a black sharpie to draw in reverse on a 1/8-inch-thick linoleum block. While preparing her Southern Author collection, due out in September, she quotes Flannery O’Conner as her inspiration for this particular group of linocuts: “from the standpoint of the writer, the South is hardly Christ-centered but it is most certainly Christ-haunted.” Along with O’Connor’s exploration of the South’s literary penchant for ghosts and freaks — because, according to her, the South still recognizes both — other literary greats featured in East Grove Studio’s upcoming Southern Author Collection include Capote, Welty, Harper Lee, and Tennessee Williams.
“I’m waiting to add Flannery O'Connor, Toole and Walker Percy,” Busby says. In the process of making her current line of linocut prints, bookmarks, notecards, and watercolor wall art, Busby notes that the process is exciting for her because it allows her to
re-explore a fascination she had while in college — darkroom photography development. “In a darkroom, the negative film image shows everything in reverse,” explains Busby. “Items that should be white are black and vice versa. Once you've gotten accustomed to myclickmag.com | SEPTEMBER 2016 21
viewing it that way, you often don't rely on contact sheets to show you images. It's almost as if you can see the image in reverse.” “The same is true when carving a print,” she continues, “you have to see the image you want to create in reverse, while carving away the white and leaving the black. Of course the added challenge is that everything is also on the opposite side. If you want something to appear on the right side of the print, you need to carve it on the left.” Busby also notes that the solitude and methodical movement in the process of making linocuts and prints are very similar to mindfulness or meditation. “It’s something to focus on and hang a thought hook on when something else is spinning out of control.” Busby has also found the process to be the best creative outlet to connect three of her favorite things — photography, authors, and knitting. She admits the knitting connection is really vague, but as is often the case with literature folks, the metaphor is obvious to her. “With each cut into linoleum, inked linoleum print and brush stroke,” she says, “I feel I'm knitting connections between author and reader.” Those connections are not limited to Southern authors, either. Included in East Grove Studio’s current Classic Authors collection are literary greats such as Shakespeare, Dickinson, Poe, Whitman, Melville — and of course, the satirical riverboat captain who saw the South as an eternal muse, Mark Twain. “Once I'm thinking about an author, he or she just rolls around in my head,” she says. “When I'm carving a print, I have a way to visually focus on that author. It might be I'm thinking of [Harper Lee] because I've just taught To Kill a Mockingbird, and so Harper Lee's just stuck. Or a conversation about Poe comes up and then it's time to focus on him. Busby smiles. “It's fun to find a reason to think about a certain author.” According to the artist, teaching 7th grade English allows her to remember the awe she felt when first introduced to classic literature and authors as a child. She then uses that memory to produce her linocuts and prints. “Each year I find new favorite lines in these books from the classic canon,” she says. “These lines and characters support me at my lowest, add joy to my life, and give richness and depth to my life. SOME HAVE REFERRED TO IT IS AS “THE Imaginarium.” Tad Pierson calls it home. Americana drips from the ceilings of Pierson’s 7,500 square-foot garage apartment in Downtown Memphis. The space is busy and beatific, covered with hand-painted signs and self-fashioned “assembly art” made from discarded tires pulled haphazardly from the side of the road. Three airstream trailers sit comfortably in the confines of the cracked walls, decked out with dated relics including stacks of old cathode ray tube TVs, aging automobile parts and the unmistakable sheen of furniture coated in naugahyde.

A window unit juts from the side of a single trailer. “That’s my summer home,” he says. “You know, the one with AC.” Living in a cramped confines of a 1970 teardrop camper is nothing new to the aging entrepreneur. When Pierson first arrived in the city more than 20 years ago, he spent his first eight months living in a trailer behind the P&H Café, a Midtown Memphis staple. “[The P&H] was basically my living room for a while,” he says of his early years as a Memphian. “I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight, but quite quickly I fell in love with the city.” By day, Pierson hosts guided tours of the city that’s been his home since 1994. Dubbed “The American Dream Safari Company,” Pierson shows visitors a side of the city that isn’t shown in brochures. A far cry from the tour buses that trudge through the city, Pierson’s custom tours take guests on a cruise from Beale Street to North Memphis, stopping at places of note. The transportation of choice is a beige ‘55 Cadillac – the very same make and model once favored by the King of Rock and Roll. “American Dream is all about the myth and legend of the open road,” he says.

A love of the blues and the congealed culture unique to Memphis sparked a drive to explore that led Pierson out of a gig as a Route 66 tour guide and headfirst into the ripe, organic storytelling potential of the Bluff City. As with many Mid-South tourism companies, exploring the humble upbringings of Elvis Presley is a big draw. “You don’t need me to take you to Graceland” he says. “That’s pretty easy to find. But I show people a few nice places off the beaten path. Like where Elvis went to high school, where he lived in public housing and a lot of other places that really put his life into perspective.” The same goes for the Blues. Visitors don’t come to Pierson looking for Beale Street. That's easy to find. They come for insider information about places like CJ’s NightClub in West Memphis, Club Flex in South Memphis and Wild Bill’s off Vollintine Avenue. Pierson also works as a self-proclaimed “industrial artist,” designing and crafting works of art from found materials – mostly tires. These eclectic pieces add to the overall aesthetic of the “carve your own cave” mentality that dictates the interior décor of his home and studio. “I’ve developed a real eye for it -- it’s kind of a quirky thing,” he says. “I got started about 15 years ago painting garden planters and my big breakthrough was coming up with this two-tone paintjob for the tires, you know, painting in the treads. Then it became more of an art.” Pierson’s indoor trailer park has allowed him to cut loose with his work. His garage home is now decorated from floor to ceiling with a wide array of custom creations including chairs, tables and lamps. “You could call it by accident or you could call it part of the artistic journey,” he says of his handiwork. “I don’t know if it’s necessarily practical, but it’s definitely a work of functional art.”

Edgar Stuart’s unique brand of Arkansas accent-driven, folk-country-blues evokes the best of Nashville Skyline-era Dylan and Willie Nelson. His latest single, “Don’t Blame Jesus,” brings together a new band of topnotch Memphis musicians in to guide listeners through clever turns of phrase and descriptive Southern landscapes. “I was trying really hard to be more generalized and less personal. Maybe that’s what people like about my stuff; but it may be what some get turned off by,” he says of the latest round of songs he’s written. Stuart has his roots in Pine Bluff, which he describes as “the Detroit of Arkansas.” He began playing upright bass for the orchestra, inspired by the original Sun Studios artists. By age 16, he came to Memphis for the first time with his first band, formed with a friend, Brian Jackson, son of Wayne Jackson of Memphis Horns fame. With Jackson’s help, they recorded their demo in, of all places, Sun Studios. Mark now knew where he wanted to be — Memphis, Tennessee, where Jerry Lee, Elvis and Johnny Cash all got their start.
Now that Stuart has recruited new musicians to accompany him, his approach to writing has adapted accordingly. “Playing with a full band has really changed the songwriting because I really had the band in mind when I was writing. I want the new album to rock a little more, to be more upbeat.” His full band will be accompanying him on an upcoming tour through Texas and an appearance in a PBS series. Then it will be time to begin recording the new album. Stuart obtained a musical scholarship for upright bass with the University of Memphis, paving the way for his musical future in Memphis. Gradually, Stuart began to play the electric bass and joined the Pawtuckets in the ‘90s. After the dissolution of the Pawtuckets, he played bass for Alvin Youngblood Hart. Afterwards, he returned to Memphis, met his wife, and continued his role as the dependable sideman, playing bass with John Paul Keith and Cory Branan, which led to an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. As he reached his mid-thirties, his musical future looked bright. However, reality would soon set in. “I got cancer (lymphoma) and
lost my Pop all in the same year and all of a sudden, I had something to say.” It was time for the sideman to take center stage and begin his role as a singer/songwriter in his own right. He began to develop his distinctive fingerpicking style and sang for the first time. After catching the songwriting bug, he wrote tons of songs until he had the makings of his landmark debut album, Blues for Lou, was lauded as a triumph by critics, taking Stuart completely by surprise. “I released a little

record for my family and friends and it kind of sprouted legs. I had no idea it was going to be so well received. I was just going to go back to playing bass. If you’d told me five years before that I’d be singing and writing songs, I’d have told you that you were nuts,” he says. Much of the first record was inspired by the loss of Stuart’s supportive and inspirational father. “He bought me my first electric guitar and electric bass. He was happy as long as I wasn’t playing heavy metal.” After nervously playing his first acoustic, solo gig, his new direction took off. All of a sudden, he was being invited to play at folk festivals like the Folk Alliance and South by Southwest. In 2015, Stuart released his second album, Trinity my Dear. The arrangements, singing, and performances sound more assured, confident and refined. Songs like “Joe is Enough” and “Trinity my Dear” explore the struggles of his relationship; but the issues being examined are very relatable. “Miss America” describes the frustrations of paying the high cost of health insurance in a struggle to live up to the American dream in the wake of his bout with cancer. He’s hoping to quit his day job in the next year to follow what seems obviously his true calling. Storied Snapshots The South in Color explores the region’s past while celebrating the special qualities of the Southern experience Review by SHANA RALEY-LUSK
FOR DECADES, WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS alike have attempted to capture the complex atmosphere of the American South. While it has been a fascinating subject matter and source of exploration for so many over the years, perhaps the region’s most dedicated and personally invested documentarian has been William Ferris, whom readers will recognize from his previous works including Give My Poor Heart Ease and The Storied South. From the tender age of just twelve, Ferris has been capturing the world around him ceaselessly, one of the results of which is this striking and gracious volume containing 100 of Ferris’s color photos of the part of the world so near to his heart. 32 SEPTEMBER 2016 | myclickmag.com
The book opens with a captivating foreword by Tom Rankin who relates a memory of a years-ago train ride with William Ferris, who he affectionately refers to as Bill. During the course of the ride, both men find plenty of fodder for conversation as they gaze out the windows of the train at the landscape of rural Mississippi, home to a flurry of memories for each. “When Bill Ferris and I talk, it is so often about the confluence of place and memory, about the same sorts of connective tissue he has always recognized no matter how far he has to wind and twist to find the common associations,” Rankin writes. “Sometimes the lines are straight and sharp and easy to see, and other times Bill finds a way to illustrate a complex diagram with the many overlaps he knows and feels.” In many ways, this singular thought captures the essence of The South in Color. In another particularly telling moment, Rankin ponders the reason for Ferris’s embarking on documenting the South in those early days. “I really don’t think Bill knew exactly why he was making so many pictures, often carrying two cameras, one with black-and-white film and the other with color slide film,” he writes. “To be sure, he knew he was ‛documenting,’ and he confidently knew by the early 1960’s that his work was about showing us and telling us intimate details of ordinary lives, helping continue James Agee’s ideas in praise of ‛human actuality,’ the ways in which all the details are infinitely important.” It is in these brilliant details that we find the grace, sensitivity, and utmost truth of these undeniably personal images. Ferris’s connectedness to this land and these people is impossible to ignore. It is the striking images themselves, though, that dominate this book and in all honesty, they can only speak for themselves. Unsurprisingly, Mr. Ferris has achieved greatness once again with these authentic, telling, and complex photos. From the farm where his life began to places, people, and nature across Mississippi and the South in general, these pictures span a range of subject matter but all share the commonality of imparting the story, the essence, and the very soul of the South. In some way, this book and all works by this undisputed Southern expert are a poem about our undeniably one-of-a-kind part of the world. From the scenic to the tumultuous, the bitter to the sweet, there is no doubt that these images will stir memories and feelings in each of us while provoking thoughts about our beloved South past, present, and future, for all.

Helping Hearts Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center’s mission to provide a safe haven for victims of abuse Story by TONYA THOMPSON

THE FIRST TIME ASHLEY SCHACHTERLE KNEW THAT
DeSoto County needed a child advocacy center was a time she’d like to forget. “When I was a therapist, we had a case involving a 4-year-old little girl,” recalls Schachterle, a licensed Clinical Social Worker and owner of Journey to New Beginnings, a counseling practice located in Southaven. “The little girl made a disclosure that she was being sexually abused. At the time, there wasn’t a child advocacy center in DeSoto County and the closest child advocacy centers were Tupelo and Oxford.” 34 SEPTEMBER 2016 | myclickmag.com
The result was a period of several weeks before the 4-year-old was able to have a forensic interview done. During that time, important evidence and details were lost, ending in the case being thrown out of court. “Now, she has supervised visitations every other weekend with her perpetrator and there is nothing we can do about it,” says Schachterle. “I found myself crying every time she walked through the door. I felt like we had failed her and we didn’t do enough.” Realizing she had to do something to make sure other DeSoto County children wouldn’t be failed by a broken process, Schachterle visited the National Children’s Advocacy Center in Huntsville,
Alabama to learn more about child advocacy centers. “I knew how many children were being abused here because I did therapy with them at the private practice,” she recalls. “I couldn’t understand why there were close to 700 child advocacy centers in the U.S., but DeSoto County didn’t have one.” But that wasn’t the case for long. On March 1, 2013 — less than a year later — Healing Hearts Child Advocacy Center (CAC) was opened, with Schachterle as its Executive Director. Her goal for the center was to help turn victims into survivors. “Our county, our community and especially our abused children deserved to have the services that child advocacy centers provide,” she says. Since its inception, Healing Hearts CAC has helped children who are victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and drug endangerment, as well as children who have been witnesses to crimes. In collaboration with the District Attorney’s Office, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department, countywide police departments, the Mississippi Department of Human Services, and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Schachterle and the staff at Healing Hearts CAC provide an opportunity for young victims to only have to tell their story once, and in a child-friendly environment. Families and young children don’t have to go to the police department to give a statement and the legal process to keep the child away from the perpetrator can immediately begin. “We have had an increase in prosecutions,” says Schachterle. “Since we opened, we have interviewed 744 children and reviewed 850 cases as a multi-disciplinary team. The biggest reward is seeing that we are making a difference in children’s lives.” Since it “takes a village” to ensure that children in our community are given the resources they need to thrive despite adversity, Healing Hearts CAC hosts several community events for fundraising efforts. The “Toast to Heal Hearts Gala” is the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraiser, and will take place on Veteran’s Day. Community members are also invited to make individual donations, business contributions, or donations to the Center’s “Tyler’s Closet” — a clothing distributor that provides vital basic necessities for children who have been removed from unsafe environments by DeSoto County’s Child Protection Services. There is a wish list set up on Amazon that details what is needed, and donations can be shipped directly to the Center.

TO MOST SOUTHERNERS, THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER means one thing — football season. The weather is starting to cool off, weekends are spent outside, and tailgating becomes a Saturday ritual. Everyone loves a good tailgate before any big game, and hosting one should be fun and simple. Whether you’re attending a game to watch your favorite team play or you just want to have a tailgate party in your backyard, these ideas and tips will help you cook and decorate your way to the perfect outdoor party. FOOD Tailgate food should be fuss-free and delicious. There’s one rule to follow when creating a tailgate menu — only cook some of it. First, decide if you want to do several appetizers or one main dish. If you decide on appetizers, choose three to four recipes to cook and buy a few dips, olives, and pre-made small bites. No one has to know you cheated a little — just use decorative bowls and platters to dress it up. If you go the main dish route, make something that can be turned into a “toppings bar.” Soup, stew, chili, sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs are ideal to garnish. Different cheeses, avocado, onions, bacon, veggies, tapenade, croutons, pickles, sauces, and jellies are all great topping ideas, and everything can be store-bought and put in small bowls. It’s stress-free for you and fun for guests.

Simplicity is the key to decorating for tailgates. Most people’s focus is on food, drink, and the company when it comes to tailgating, so simple décor is always best — just make sure you’re representing the team everyone is cheering on. To display food and drink nicely, a tablecloth is always a good base. Choose one in your team’s color or go for white or black and decorate around it. Spirit items such as footballs, helmets, pom pons, megaphones, clappers, and spirit sticks scattered around the food and drink table are a nice touch. Plus, they act as décor and party favors that guests can take home or to the game with them. Flowers add elegance and can be bought in different team colors. You can also go the DIY route by hitting up a dollar store and getting creative. Chalkboards act as a cute menu display or platters; mason jars can be painted and act as containers for utensils; and balloons can be bunched together for a colorful, impressive background.
DRINK
The perfect hostess should plan to have several drink choices — both non-alcoholic and alcoholic. If kids are coming, have individual fruit drinks and juices for them. Better yet, make a sangria-style pitcher of fruit juice or Kool-aid, mixing in different fruits and herbs. For the adults who aren’t drinkers, bottled waters, sodas, and even bottled iced coffees are a good idea. For the drinkers, have a cooler full of different style beers and a Mimosa or Bloody Mary bar that includes different mixers, flavored simple syrups, and toppings. When it comes to drinks — the more choices, the better.

CREAM TACO DIP
This dip has literally been called “the best dip of all time!” Even better, it’s easy-peasy to make. Ingredients 1lb chorizo 1(10 oz) can Rotel 1(15 oz) can chili no beans 1(15 oz) can ranch style beans 1large package Velveeta cheese 1cup heavy whipping cream Directions 1. In a large pot or dutch oven, cook the chorizo over medium heat until done, breaking up the meat into small pieces as it cooks. Drain the fat from the pot. 2. Pour in the Rotel, chili, ranch style beans, and stir together. Cube the Velveeta and add to the pot. Stir everything together until melted. 3. Add the heavy whipping cream and stir to combine. Let the dip heat completely and transfer to a slow cooker to transport to tailgate. Serve with tortilla chips.
PORK RIND BBQ NACHOS Enjoy this Memphis favorite guilt-free. The pork rinds make these nachos low-calorie and carb-free! Ingredients 1 large bag BBQ Pork Rinds 32 oz pulled pork - warmed *I like to use leftovers from sandwiches the night before or you can find it in the freezer section of your grocery store 1 cup cheddar cheese - grated 1/2 cup BBQ sauce 1 jalapeño - sliced into rounds (optional) Parsley (optional) Directions 1. Spread the pork rinds out on a large platter. 2. Top the rinds with the pulled pork, then the cheese, and drizzle the BBQ sauce over top. You can add as much or little of any of these as you like. 3. Include tunes that will get everyone pumped up for the big game, and don’t forget to bring a cordless speaker so everyone can join in on the fun. Thou shalt set up games. A great tailgate always includes entertainment and games are the perfect addition. Corn Hole, Washers, and Ladder Golf are some of the most popular. Thou shalt provide a way to watch live games. Some tailgaters go as far as bringing a TV to watch games, but you can make it easier by streaming games from your iPad or computer.

Thou shalt pick up food items from the store. Don’t spend hours in your kitchen cooking everything. Instead, choose a few recipes to cook and rely on the store for everything else. Thou shalt seek out a good location. Before the big tailgate, find a good place to have it. Get there early to ensure your ideal space is available. Thou shalt clean as you go. Bring a large bin to discard empty platters — they’ll be out of sight and you can wash when you get home. And always have a visible garbage can for guests to use. Thou shalt bring plenty of napkins and towels. Tailgate food can get messy so you can never have too many napkins for guests and towels to clean. Thou shalt prepare the night before. Make life easier by prepping most of the food and packing the décor the night before. You won’t have to wake up as early and the day will go smoothly. Thou shalt not stress. A tailgate is meant to be fun — not overwhelming — even for the host. Your guests will have fun regardless of what you cook or bring, so enjoy it.

FALL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND WE WANT TO INSPIRE YOU TO CREATE SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR YOUR DINING TABLE.
Stephenson Farms in Como, Mississippi, has rustic charm the perfect custom-built dining table that hosts 28 guests. We took the opportunity to get into the fall spirit and dress this long, dramatic table for a feast. John Mark Enterprises helped us with adding fresh florals, the central design element for our tablescape. We asked him to share some tips and advice on building floral arrangements that will really wow your guests! The low-lying flower boxes I used were made by a retired missionary, Bill Bradford. These boxes are perfect to arrange flowers in for a tablescape because they are not bulky, they look good, and you can also still talk with people at the table without looking around the flowers. When designing these boxes, it’s great to use the same technique — big flowers first and then work your way to the small flowers. In these boxes, I started with pumpkins and gourds. I look for the funky, abnormal

looking ones. These will add a fall feel to any tablescape. It’s best to use an uneven number — we used three good-sized pumpkins per box. Just fill in the blank spots with a little greenery at the end. I like to pull my greenery from the yard because there’s always something green in our yard year-round. This gives a personalized element to make each arrangement unique. To add another personal touch, you can always incorporate place cards and menu cards. Votive candles are always an asset and add ambiance to any dinner party. We had a separate drink station, where we used yellow glasses for another added pop of color. Aside from the gorgeous florals that were the focus of our tablescape, we kept it simple and clean with white plates and dusty blue napkins. The typical bold colors of fall were paired with dusty blue, which softened the look. You don't need a lot going on when you have show-stopping florals. Guests had plenty of room for adding drinks and food from the buffet later with the minimalist design. We hope you are able to gain some creative inspiration from our tablescape and take these tips and put them into action!

• After the flower arranging is done, add greenery to the base and something airy to the top. In this case, for the greenery we used Seeded Eucalyptus and Amaranthus. We let both hang down out of the tall arrangements for a real “wow” effect. • To create an airy effect and add height, I used Curly Willow and Bells of Ireland, which were shooting out from the top. Tall arrangements are great showstoppers because you can use a lot of flowers, but when you are sitting at the table guests can still communicate with each other without the flowers blocking their view.

Yield: 2 smoothies
INGREDIENTS: 2 cups baby spinach, packed ½ ripe avocado 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2 cups unsweetened coconut or almond milk 1½ cups diced mango (fresh or frozen) 1½ cups diced pineapple (fresh or frozen)
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the spinach, avocado, chia seeds and coconut or almond milk in a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. 2. Add the diced mango and pineapple and puree until smooth. 3. Pour your smoothie into glasses or mason jars and drink immediately or refrigerate in a sealed jar or container for up to 3 days. Note: Yes, you can blend all the ingredients at the same time, but I find that pureeing the greens on their own first ensures that you don’t have any chewy greens in your smoothie.sure to add a few pieces of fruit to each glass.
