CASEY HILDER

editor’s letter

For the Love of Puppies Anyone who knows me can tell you dogs are my thing. Whenever I’m in public and see a friendly pooch, I get a big dumb smile on my face. But getting a pet isn’t all big dumb smiles and vacuuming copious amounts of fur from the carpet. Owning a dog is a contract. If you decide to make this animal a companion, you’re in it for the long haul, however long that may be. Last year, I laid my surly 14-year-old chihuahua mix, Boomer, to rest in my backyard. This guy had been next to me through my rebellious teen years, college and the beginnings of my tenure as editor of this lovely magazine. Boomer hated every single living thing except for me and I loved him for it. Ferociously loyal, I always said that no one would ever be able to sneak up on me with him around. Needless to say, I felt pretty vulnerable without my ever-present 20-pound furry friend. I have a new pup now. Her name is Poppy and you can see her on the cover, sporting a fancy new bandana, courtesy of ScatterBrained Collars. She’s more than a handful of trouble, but her place and the spot that all pets occupy in our hearts is unmistakable and irreplaceable. I guess I don’t need to tell you that this month’s issue is a labor of love for us here at Click magazine. We’ve prepared a comprehensive array of pet products to spoil your cat or dog (page 57). In addition, this month’s pet adoption guide was put together alongside the kind folks from Sunny Meadows, Blackwell Animal Rescue Center and Alive Rescue Memphis (page 61). Each and every one of these animals is friendly as can be and they all deserve caring homes. So, from all of us to all of you: Adopt, don’t shop. Your new best friend is out there. Read on,

Casey Hilder

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECORDS indicate that the bond between humans and dogs goes back nearly 15,000 years, possibly more. For renowned animal trainer and canine expert Bryan Bailey, this seemed like a good place to start. Bailey, the author of 2015’s Embracing the Wild in Your Dog, brings a lifetime of wolf behavior research to the table to help understand the evolutionary impulses that drive our fourlegged friends. As the owner of ProTrain Memphis, Bailey works to rehabilitate some of the most behaviorally challenged dogs in the Mid-South and beyond. Click Magazine: What got you into training? Bryan Bailey: I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska, which was my first exposure to wolves. My father was stationed in the military up there, so we spent many years in the area. I was fascinated. Eventually, I left Alaska for the lower 48 and joined the military like my father before me. For a few years, I worked in the marine mammal projects training sea lions and dolphins for the Navy. After that, I began to get drawn into biology, earned my degree from Cornell University, and started packing in a lot of wolf research. At that time, I was very into competition — shooting sport, AKC obedience, that sort of thing. After a while, people started asking me to train their dogs and here I am today. CM: How do you analyze a dog? BB: I always go back to wolf and start from there. We often forget that our modern dogs still share a perfect pair of 39 chromosomes with their ancestors. There’s a 2 percent difference on a mitochondrial DNA sequence and anyone who studies this will tell you that it’s impossible to separate behavior from biology. All dogs are driven by that phylogenetic ratio back toward wolf, not toward human. I always tell people that if you treat your dog like a human, it will treat you like a dog. 14 MAY 2017 | myclickmag.com

CM: What does it mean to “embrace the wild” within your dog? BB: I try to educate people about what they really own. It means understanding that your dog is still wild to a degree. Embrace it, don’t be afraid of it. Dogs have undergone a great degree of morphological changes over the years — that’s why we have the Bassett Hound and the Poodle existing alongside the Shih Tzu — however, instinct is the last thing to change. And its changes are nowhere near the physiological changes. It’s psychological. The instinct is still there. Consider a Border Collie who herds sheep. The hunt sequence for a wolf is this: locate, stalk, chase, catch, kill, ingest, digest. Of course, you don’t want the Border Collie doing all seven steps. Locate is good, stalk is good, you can chase it over here. The rest, not so helpful to us. Through our own genetic engineering of these dogs, we have convinced dogs to stop this sequence early. It’s why you have pointer dogs that go after birds. CM: Would you say your most recent book veers more toward understanding canine biology than a traditional training manual? BB: Embracing the Wild is not a training book. It’s more about understanding the creature that you are about to train. Why does it jump on you? Well, it wants to be at head level. Why is calling a dog so difficult? Because wolves never call each other in the wild. You don’t just announce to the whole grocery store that you’ve arrived. It’s about teaching and understanding the roots. Say I want to repair a watch. It would behoove me to have at least a basic understanding of how a watch works before I attempt to start turning all these dials and taking it apart. The training part doesn’t begin until two books from now. CM: What is the subject of your next book? BB: My next book deals with aggression, titled The Hammer: Understanding and Preventing Canine Aggression. In it, I talk about fatalities and the nearly 400 Americans who have died in the past 10 years from aggressive dogs. That book is more urgent than the usual “come, sit, stay, heel” training book you see on shelves. CM: What is the biggest problem associated with dog ownership today? BB: The pet industry is a $65 billion a year industry. It’s not based off of the notion that you own a wolf. It’s based off of the notion that you have a family member. We’ve been imprinted since we were kids that the wolf is a villain. After all, who tried to eat Red Riding Hood and the Three Pigs? Even in the Bible, Jesus refers to the wolf as a metaphor to describe evil and greed. Nowhere is the wolf painted as a hero. We’re often made to think of them as people, and that’s an erroneous thought.

“From the wild wolf who is perfectly

suited for its world, she created a wolf that is perfectly suited for ours. But, like a wonderful gift that has been left unopened, our imaginations have fabricated something inside nature’s gift that we humans desire and not what was given. If we would only find the will to open the box, we would discover something far greater. Staring up out of the box would be a domestic wolf born of a rich heritage and carved from the wild. With its behavior wrapped in the trappings of steadfast predictability, this creature would provide us with trustworthy companionship and the tranquility that comes from understanding and accepting it for what it is and not for what we wish it to be. In a paradoxical way, we would actually get what we really desire.

Point & Retrieve At one special place in the Mid-South, owners and devotees of field dogs – specifically English Cocker Spaniels, English Springer Spaniels, Retrievers, Brittany Spaniels, German Shorthair Pointer, Reds, Pointers and Setters – have a dedicated and renowned facility; the sole reason for its existence being to honor them. The National Bird Dog Museum in Grand Junction, Tennessee is located 60 miles east of Memphis.

DOG ENTHUSIASTS ARE SPECIAL PEOPLE, OFTEN fanatical over certain breeds and devoted to them as pets or in some cases as highly trained working animals. The National Bird Dog Museum in Grand Junction, TN, began as a personal dream of the late William Brown, who was editor of American Field magazine and dreamed of one day establishing the same for bird dogs, bird dog people and field trials. His vision was caught by others devoted to the sport and by 1953, issues of the magazine were filled with articles related to and promoting the establishment of just such an organization. By 1954, it became a reality with the induction of five dogs and five persons into the then-newly formed Field Trial Hall of Fame. Excitement and participation grew quickly among enthusiasts, even though trials were being held all over the country and various awards were handed out. There was not, however, one central and physical location for the Hall of Fame. By the 1970s, different breed owners were conducting trials and holding competitions independent of each other when another visionary stepped in. Wilson Dunn, of Dunn’s Inc. — a retail and mail order company in Grand Junction — created a memorabilia room in his store that featured Field Trial sport-related items. It almost immediately became a must-see for visitors and those competing at the National Championships held each February at nearby Ames Plantation. Word spread and many involved in the sport began to realize that a central Hall of Fame and perhaps a museum needed to find a home. At the time, two cities were proposed candidates — Oklahoma City and Grand Junction, TN — but it took another visionary to step in. That man, who would establish the present location, was eminent bird dog enthusiast Gary Lockee, who was at the time serving on the board of the Top Shooting Dog Award Committee. Lockee purchased land in La Grange, TN for his residence and became good friends with Wilson Dunn. Together, each realized that they could spear-head an effort to establish headquarters in the area and each man contributed monies to purchase just under five 18 MAY 2017 | myclickmag.com

acres in Grand Junction to build a home for what would become the Field Trial Hall of Fame and National Bird Dog Museum. Their vision would prove a lucrative effort since the location was close by the Ames Plantation, which had been home to the National Championships since 1874. Tax-exempt status was gained for the new enterprise and Lockee and Dunn both traveled extensively to field trials and bird dog functions, raising funds in support of the new facility. And their efforts paid off handsomely. Establishment of a governing body of officers was next and began in Oklahoma in 1989, with fourteen candidates invited. Construction of the initial building on-site in Grand Junction then began in 1990 and was completed in August, then furnished by February, 1991. On February 16th, 1991, the ribbon cutting took place and guests were led into the building by a bagpiper where the first ceremony was conducted with the awarding of Hall of Fame scrolls. The initial building was comprised of 4,800 square feet and by 1993, construction of a second building of equal size was begun to house

the Field Trial Hall of Fame. Then in 1996, a third 4,800-square-foot building was added for a library, gift shop, auditorium, wildlife heritage center, kitchen and a banquet room. Additionally, in 2004 a “Retriever Wing” was added and by 2011, a fifth building — the “Sporting Dog Wing” — was under way. As support grew and funding increased, the world-wide fame of the operation became legendary. Prominent people in the world of field and working dogs came on-board in various capacities with their influence and expertise leading to the initiation of specific groups of dogs: the Retriever group in 1992, the Brittany group in 1996, specific Spaniel groups in 1999 and the German Shorthair Pointer group in 2008. And as time progressed, other breeds were inducted and space for their recognition was added so that, today, the complex stands as the bench-mark. Whether interest in dogs is strictly as a pet or a professional perspective, a trip to Grand Junction to the National Bird Dog Museum is well worth it. The facility is filled with displays and recognitions, and even one highlighting a special letter of thanks and photos from former first lady, Barbara Bush regarding their well-known dog Millie. In the parking lot, cars with license plates from states all over the country and Canada are present everyday as visitors make the short one-hour drive east from Memphis to see the facility. The National Bird Dog Museum is located at 505 Highway 57 East in Grand Junction, TN and can be reached at 731-764-2058.

Cruisin’ with CAMINO Turn up the tunes and take the next exit; The Band CAMINO is here to take you on a drive Story by TESS CATLETT

BEFORE THERE WAS THE BAND CAMINO, THERE

was The Jeffrey Jordan Band. The eponymous creative outlet connected lead singer and guitarist Jeffrey Jordan, 22, and bassist Graham Rowell, 20, with a crew that would change the game. A mix of alternative rock and Americana, the OG six-piece group also included drummer Andrew Isbell, 19, and fellow lead singer and guitarist Spencer Stewart, 23. “We ended up writing ‘Young’ at one rehearsal when it was just us four there,” Jordan says. “We [knew] we needed to do something with this song.” The indie rock ballad was unlike anything The Jeffrey Jordan Band had pulled together before. But something clicked, and it was too good to ignore. “We felt like we had a responsibility to the song,” Jordan says. “[We figured] if we could make music like this, then we should.” Unsure of this new sound, the other two members of The Jeffrey Jordan Band decided to mutually part ways. Although no one knew it at the time, this was the start of a new era for the band. 20 MAY 2017 | myclickmag.com

“We sat on ‘Young’ for like a month,” Jordan says. “We were trying to think of a band name. Then Graham saw an El Camino and basically convinced us all that Camino was a good name.” “Jeffrey didn’t like it at first,” Rowell says with a chuckle. “Andrew and I decided that we were going to keep saying it until he liked it. It took about a week.” With a new name in tow, the guys re-introduced themselves to the Memphis music scene and started booking shows. Their first official gig as The Band CAMINO was at the 2015 Delta Fair. “We were supposed to play 45 minutes, but we only had three or four originals at that point,” Jordan says. “I remember that being such a big issue for the first like couple of months,” Isbell says. “We have these three songs, and that’s close to 12 minutes. We’ve only got 30 more minutes to fill!” Just six months later, CAMINO was on the bill for 2016’s Beale Street Music Festival. “Somehow we got booked for a major festival before we had any music out,” Stewart says, still in shock by the band’s good fortune. He was with Jordan when they found out. “We were on campus, getting out of my car in the central parking lot,” Jordan says. “My jaw just dropped. When I got off the phone, I was like, ‘You’re not going to believe what we just got asked to do.’” After sorting out the details, the only thing left to do was sign the contract. A week went by with no paperwork in sight when the band got the bad news: Their time slot fell through. Shortly after, the official line-up came up and the CAMINO crew had to face the facts. They weren’t on it, so it just wasn’t meant to be. Or so they thought. The band was in the crowd at a Bluff City Soul Collective show when Jordan received a call from Jim Holt, president and CEO of Memphis in May. A spot had opened up for the last day of the fest, and they wanted CAMINO — for real this time. They sent over the contract almost immediately after the call, Jordan says. “We practiced every day leading up to it,” Jordan says. “We ran the exact set so many times that we knew it like the back of our hands.”

This time around the band had a full set list of originals, fresh off of their debut EP, My Thoughts on You. “I feel like we killed it,” Jordan says. “We just got up there and it felt awesome. The weather was awesome, the crowd was awesome; it was perfect.” CAMINO was one of the first bands to play, so they were able to hang out in their trailer and enjoy the rest of the fest after getting off stage. “I waved at Bastille, [but] they didn’t really wave back,” Stewart says. “I probably looked like an idiot running around, wide-eyed. I just couldn’t believe that I was there with all of those people.” “We felt like we shouldn’t have been there,” Jordan adds. “It was pretty crazy.” In the year since, the band has matured beyond their original musical influences. “When we were starting a band, it was in my peak phase of being obsessed with the 1975 and what they were doing at the time,” Jordan says, acknowledging the band’s impact on My Thoughts on You. “We were just really hype about them, [and] we wanted to do that.” Stewart says that although they nod to their debut — they’ll be releasing a single of the same name on May 12 — their second EP has more of a varied influence.

Instead of trying to incorporate the same production elements their idols employ, they’re building their own sound from scratch. “We still draw influence from a ton of bands, but we’re drawing more from our own creativity,” Stewart says. “We’ve come to a point where we’re creative enough to think of them on our own.” “[They have a] great combination of talent and work ethic,” says Ben Yonas, a producer, artist manager, and music business professor at the University of Memphis. “They practice more than any other band I know.” Over the past two years, Yonas has taught all four of the CAMINO guys at one point or another. He was also around when they decided to form the band. “These guys have a strong music business foundation to start from,” he says, reflecting on their time at U of M. “They won’t be signing any stupid deals like so many bands often do. They know what a good deal looks like, and they know what to ask for.” Beyond that, Yonas says, “they realize the importance of putting on an epic live show and they continue to write great music, which, of course, is the key.” CAMINO’s second EP, Heaven, is set to release on June 2.

“We still draw influence from a ton of bands, but we’re drawing more from our own creativity”

Mary Conley’s Summer Closet A look at 2017 trends with Click stylist and NBA wife Mary Conley Story by OLIVIA COLVERT

SUMMER OPENS THE POSSIBILITIES FOR OCCASIONS— weddings, vacations, graduations and all the everyday living in between. Mary Conley creates a beautiful, summer wardrobe by incorporating the 2017 runway’s top pieces to fit every important to-do this upcoming summer season. Whether the event is filled with family, friends or colleagues—she covers it. This NBA wife celebrates her life as Click’s new stylist, and shines the light on her all-encompassing summer wardrobe. Ruffles, denim, bomber jackets and beach accessories are what’s on her list for must-haves for this upcoming season.

Click Magazine: What has been the most rewarding gift you have received from being selected as the new stylist for Click magazine? Mary Conley: The most rewarding gift I have received since being selected as the new stylist for Click Magazine would be confidence. Knowing the editor trusts me to select the clothes, style the models and inspire the reader is a great feeling. CM: We all know every summer brings a new list of selected trends for the beach, which one appeals to you the most as you plan for your summer trip and why? MC: I love packing for vacations, especially a beach vacation. This year, I will be investing in new cover-ups. When I am walking from my hotel room to the pool or beach, I want to be covered up, but not in just shorts and a t-shirt. A cute cover-up can take you to a beach side lunch or to a market, and still looked pulled together. 22 MAY 2017 | myclickmag.com

CM: What goes into planning an outfit for a formal occasion when taking the summer heat into consideration? Are there any items you see as a necessity for these events? MC: Summer is the season for weddings and formal dressing, which can be hard to do in this southern heat. I would pay close attention to the material of your outfit. Choose breathable material like cotton and linen and choosing a lighter color fabric will also help. With the hot weather comes air conditioning, so don’t forget to bring a shawl or jacket in case you are cold inside. CM: The denim skirt is on its way back in, and is considered one of the top trends for the upcoming spring/summer 2017 season. What does your denim skirt outfit look like? MC: When I first saw the denim skirt was coming back I thought of my early high school days. Today, I am wearing a completely different style denim skirt. I am loving the pencil style, which is high waisted and fitted. Worn with a tee tucked in at the front, a cute pair of sandals and a lightweight bomber jacket. CM: Every girl’s dream is the feeling of her favorite summer dress on. Have you seen any for this upcoming season that have made an impression on you? MC: Last year’s summer dress will be on repeat for me this summer, an off the shoulder chambray dress. Mixing two styles in one, denim and off the shoulder, gives an added chicness to an outfit. If you aren’t comfortable exposing your shoulders, look for a classic t-shirt style dress. They are loose and forgiving, and have a flattering neckline. CM: Ruffles appeared repeatedly on the runway this season. What are some of your favorite ways to playfully show your appreciation for ruffles? MC: Ruffles were everywhere on the runway this season. The best way to wear ruffles without feeling too young is to add a structured piece. I have seen some beautiful dresses with ruffles down the side, which would be a great style to wear to a formal event. My favorite ruffle look would be ruffles on the sleeve of a structured shirt with distressed jeans.

CM: Military fashion has become huge over the past few months. Is there a jacket you have your eye on that makes for an excellent transition into the chilly weather that comes with the end of the day? MC: Military jackets today are just as versatile as a denim and leather jacket. What is fun about the military jackets today are the patches! You can make your jacket unique by customizing with the patches that have cute sayings, or buy a jacket that already has patches that expresses your personality. These types of jackets are looser, and are perfect for layering over a light sweater when the weather turns a little cooler. myclickmag.com | MAY 2017 23

Mudbug Bash For over 100 years, Palmer Home for Children has been providing a safe place for children in need. The staple organization expanded its campus to include the Hernando community in 2003, and with it, came a slew of new traditions like the Mudbug Bash. Every year, the family-friendly crawfish boil and buffet draws people from across the Mid-South to fix up a plate in support of the nonprofit. Photos by MIKE LEE myclickmag.com | MAY 2017 25

AFTER

BEFORE BREANNA [College Student] Gray or stonewashed jeans, shirts, skirts, or skorts — no matter the cut it's a MUST for your spring/summer wardrobe. Pay attention to the washes. Grey and light stone wash is in, while the mildly distressed look is back too. Don't be afraid to fray at the knee! Simple, Layered Jewels — Don't think statement jewelry, but make a statement with dainty layers! Choose some lovely layers when it comes to arm candy or neckwear. Color-coded Lipstick — It's all about the color code in your twenties. This spring’s code is Barbie Pink and Berry Red mattes. Tasseled Hair — Mermaid hair, don't care! Add some curls to your locks and texture it up with a sea salt spray to add extra mermaid. Basic Tees — It's all about the basics this summer. Try a line of dye-washed basic tees to spice up your denim wardrobe.

52 MAY 2017 | myclickmag.com

AFTER

BEFORE JENNIFER [Graphic Designer] Fresh Face — Around your 30s, your skin goes through a major change. Keeping a flawless complexion is the focus. Go with a foundation that corrects your skin while you wear it. It never hurts to choose products that are infused with anti-oxidants and vitamins. Floral Tunic Blouse — The tunic blouse is very versatile as it can be worn with leggings or jeans. Free People made this button-neck, bell tunic popular and they truly hit the nail on the head with this body cut. It is flattering for all body types. Statement Stones — Natural stones make lovely statement jewelry pieces. When sporting the floral, you do not want to go overboard with jewelry. Choose all-natural stones for a classic look that is sure to complement your florals. Loose Curls — We are looking for a sophisticated, yet classy look. Opt for loose curls over tousled waves. Curls are very feminine and mature while also keeping on trend. Ankle Cutout — Looking for ways to keep the appeal? Ankle peep shoes are all the rage. Keep it hot with heels that focus on the ankles instead of the toe cleavage.

myclickmag.com | MAY 2017 53

AFTER

BEFORE JENNY [Retail Store Manager] Sexy Side ankle — Sexy is an attitude, not an age. This season it is all about the side ankle. Choose a pair of booties or sandals that have a side-angle cut out. These look great with cropped pants and even the perfect spring dress. Knotted Top — No need to throw away all of your flowy tops. Sport the side knot to add a little definition to your curves. You can tie it higher if you are small wasted, or tie it lower around the thigh area if you want to hide the stomach. Au Naturale Make Up — Barely-there matte make up is gracing our runways the spring. It's all about the glow. Choose colors that are in the natural palette. For a pop of color, go with a pink matte lip gloss. Tie-Waist Overcoat — On the cooler beach nights, grab a tie-waist cardigan or coat. Try tying the waist in the back to cinch your outerwear to show off your curves. Remember, no more baggy clothes, it's all about the curves.

Jordan Clark’s new Scatterbrained Collars storefront in Olive Branch gives a new meaning to “fetch” Story and photos by Casey Hilder

it comes to fashionable pets, Jordan Clark’s Pitbull mix Taaka wins When best of show. Clark, who has crafted handmade, custom collars for more than seven years, was inspired by her rough-and-tumble pup to create a durable, locally sourced product that would not only last, but also make a statement to reflect Taaka’s bubbly personality. And thus, Scatterbrained Collars, LLC, was born. Clark originally fulfilled orders through Facebook and local craft fairs before opening up her own storefront in Olive Branch’s Old Towne District. From collars to leashes and bandanas, her work can add a little whimsical flair to any animal: dogs, cats, even horses. The following products are available for custom order through her shop:

OUR BELOVED PETS ARE PART OF THE FAMILY AND deserve to be celebrated! What better way to treat your fur babies than to order up some festive sweets just for them? The Three Dog Bakery in Collierville, Tennessee, is just the place, baking up a variety of paw-licking goodies.

DOG-FRIENDLY SWEETS

No need to worry about your pet’s diet or health because no salt, sugar, preservatives or fillers are used in these baked treats, which are prepared daily and 100-percent natural. Each Three Dog Bakery has a unique selection of items, like seasonal treats, gourmet dog pastries, including the famous Pupcakes, and even one-of-a-kind canine cakes you can get personalized for your pup’s special occasions. If you are planning a “pawty” for your four-legged family member, here are a few tips and ideas that will help make it a droolicious success. • Choose a dog-friendly location like a dog park or your own backyard. You want to be sure there is ample space for your canine guests to play and potty! • Don’t forget the drinks! Dogs need lots of water when playing, especially if outside. You could designate a “watering hole” and put several bowls or one large trough out to keep them all hydrated and happy. • Invite dog lovers as well as dogs that socialize well with others. This will ensure there are no hairy situations during all the fun. Order or create a special cake or treats for all the four-legged guests. If you don’t have a dog bakery near by, try out this recipe to create your own. Just make sure you only use doggy safe ingredients no matter what you serve.

• Don’t forget the balls, frisbies, chew toys and cleaning supplies! Keep their tails waggin and any accidents at bay by being prepared. If you need some help finding a reason to throw your first tailwaggin celebration, we have a list of reasons! Host a new puppy shower for a friend. Celebrate graduation from obedience school or welcome a new dog to the neighborhood.

If you choose to freeze the cakes, wrap each one individually with plastic wrap. Then wrap each one with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Then place each one in a labeled freezer bag. It may seem like a, lot of work, but it will keep the dog cakes delicate texture fresh longer.

THE POUR BERRY SMOOTH

Recipe and Photo courtesy of SERENA WOLF

As any experimental smoothie maker knows, throwing random stuff in a blender does not always yield delicious results. Sometimes, you need a tried and true recipe for smoothie success. Yield: 1 16-ounce smoothie

INGREDIENTS: · 1 cup unsweetened almond milk · 1 scoop Vital Proteins collagen protein (optional) · 2 teaspoons hemp or chia seeds (optional) · 1 tablespoon almond butter · ¼-½ teaspoon ground cinnamon · A few drops pure vanilla extract (optional) · 1 cup baby spinach · ½ cup frozen dark sweet cherries · 1½ cups frozen berries of your choice (I usually do a mix of blueberries and strawberries, but I love raspberries from time to time.)

DIRECTIONS: 1. Add all the ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth. (Duh.) Notes: The smoothie blends best if you add the ingredients in the order listed! And please be patient. This is a thick smoothie and it may need a minute or so to blend.
