Weekend in Madrid - the Capital city of Spain 29th October - 2nd November VISITING Madrid, Toledo, Avila & Segovia FRIDAY, 29TH OCTOBER | We meet our group leader at the Malta International airport at 5.50pm for Ryanair’s direct flight to Madrid departing at 7.50pm. SATURDAY, 30TH OCTOBER | Breakfast and off we go to our optional guided halfday city tour of this wonderful capital city of Spain. We see amongst other places the Parliament Square, the Royal Palace and the Padro Museum. The afternoon is free time for personal sightseeing and for shopping. SUNDAY, 31ST OCTOBER | Breakfast and a free day to make your own discoveries or perhaps join our full-day optional excursion to Toledo. Once the spiritual and intellectual capital of Spain, the city sits on an outcrop of rock surrounded on three sides by the River Tagus. The imposing Moorish fortress, the Alacazar, dominates the skyline, its battlements rising above the surrounding flat countryside. There will be a walking tour of the city, including the exquisite 13th century cathedral, with an experienced local guide. Later on we visit the majestic gardens in Aranjuaez and pass by the Palace. We return to our hotel late afternoon.

castle overlooking the river, the Gothic Cathedral, and the impressive Roman aqueduct, built in the 1st century AD. Some 800 metres long and in some places 30 metres high. We later visit Avila to see its medieval walls and delightful cathedral, begun in the 12th century but never completed. On our way, we will stop in two villages nearby Zakopane namely Chocholow and Witow. The highlight of Chocholow is undoubtedly its traditional wooden architecture and the workshop of a local artist in one of the wooden huts. We will then be transferred to our central 3-star hotel in Zakopane. TUESDAY, 7TH DECEMBER | We start our journey with a walking tour of Zakopane, a beautiful village at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. Here we will have ample time to visit the highlanders market where one is sure to find various goods on offer such as leather jackets, cheese tasting and souvenir shopping. We will then take a short ride on a cable car that will take us on top of Gubalowka Mountain for a spectacular view of the Tatra Mountains. We will also have time to walk through the famous Krupowki street, beautifully decorated at Christmas time, filled with shops and restaurants.

THURSDAY, 9TH DECEMBER | Today, our full day optional excursion is taking us to Morskie Oko or Eye of the Sea translated in English. It is the largest and fourth-deepest lake in the Tatra Mountains, in southern Poland. It is located deep within the Tatra National Park in the Rybi Potok (the Fish Brook) Valley, of the High Tatras mountain range. Morskie Oko is one of the most popular destinations in the Tatras, often receiving over 50,000 visitors during the vacation season. We will experience a horse drawn carriage ride (extra) that will take us most of the way up the mountain. Here, we will spend relaxing afternoon, sounded with

We later proceed to our 4 star Unterberghof Hotel in Flachau for check-in. TUESDAY, 7TH DECEMBER | Our first optional full-day excursion will take us first to visit the Hallein Salt Mines in Austria (extra). Together with the local guide we will follow the miners’ footsteps by first board an electric train for this fun-filled tour through this brilliant 7,000 years old underground salt mine. After this 400-metre ride we straddle two wooden rails and slide down to the lower level of the mine (one can opt to use the steps). We will see an interesting multivision show and board a raft and cross the fascinating subterranean lake before exiting the mine. We will later cross the border to Bavaria in Germany to visit Berchtesgaden. This festive season in Berchtesgaden is characterized by rich traditions and customs that have been passed on for many generations. At the Christmas Market stalls, you can find original Berchtesgaden Christmas tree decorations that have been crafted according to the folk-art traditions that have existed in the region for centuries. Horse-drawn carriage rides, local wood crafts and Christmas carol singers create an atmosphere that will fill you with joy and peace. We will have time for shopping and later make our way back to Flachau, making a short stop in Villach, which is a lovely town in the Carinthia region boasting some beautifully adorned Christmas markets in the town centre. Here we will experience local Christmas folk customs, traditional decorations, gifts, incense to help conjure up a festive atmosphere and all Austrian specialities like mulled wine, hot punch gingerbread biscuits and more. During our stay in Salzburg we will walk through and see Mirabel Gardens, St Peter’s Abbey, Mozart’s birth house and the cemetery which made part of the setting of the film “The Sound of Music”. We will also stroll along the 1.2km long pedestrian Konigstrasse, a shopping paradise packed with variety of shops for any taste. One may opt to visit on his own the Mercedes-Benz Museum (extra) which takes you through a journey of more than 130 years of fascinating automotive history and on into the future. After the guided tour, we will take a boat ride (included – weather permitting) on the River Ljubljanica to admire the city from a different view. The rest of the day is free to enjoy Ljubljana. During Christmas time, the entire city is decked out in the colours of celebration! It just is not possible to visit Liège during the month of December without taking a detour via its famous Christmas Village, often cited as the oldest Christmas market in Belgium. With its 200 chalets, each year it attracts many people who come to taste the produce on offer and seek original gifts that can be found in its rows! It’s the largest city in the German Federal State and the fourth most populated city in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. Every year, the city centre of Cologne is touched by the magic of the festivities in the run-up to Christmas. Christmas music, arts and crafts, toys, Christmas decorations and the scent of the Christmas bakeries create a wonderful atmosphere. ¢539 SUNDAY, 19TH DECEMBER | After breakfast today we start our holiday by going to an optional half-day excursion to Namur. The capital city of the Wallonia region of Belgium. At the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers is the Citadel, a medieval fortress with 7km of underground passages, gardens, views, and a golden statue of a giant turtle. In town, the Felicien Rops Museum focuses on the works of this 19thcentury, Namur-born erotic artist. The baroque St. Loup Church has marble columns and a richly carved ceiling. We return to our hotel to rest so in the evening we attend the much-awaited Andre Rieu concert (optional) in his hometown, Maastricht. Andre

MONDAY, 20TH DECEMBER | After breakfast we check-out of our rooms and later we go on our last half-day excursion to Aachen, located in the border triangle Germany – the Netherlands - Belgium. One of the major sites one can find in Aachen is Aachen Cathedral. The more than 1,200 years old cultural site is the last resting place of Charlemagne and the site of coronation of 30 German kings. Today Aachen Cathedral with its religious architecture annually attracts more than one million visitors. In 1978 it was registered as the first cultural site in Germany on the UNESCO-World Heritage List. We return to our hotel and later make our way to Brussels airport for our Air Malta flight departing at 7.55pm and arriving in Malta at 10.35pm.
