Welcome to all our readers to this first issue of Village Voice. Village Voice is for Wilsden people, and aims to help us to be more together as a village, and to be better informed. We hope to include articles that are interesting as well as information that is useful. Village Voice will be produced in time for Easter, Harvest (September) and Christmas each year. Every home in the village will receive a copy and any group or organisation is welcome to submit items for the next issue. (space permitting). If you can offer to help with distribution of future copies, maybe just to your own street, please would you phone Sandra Haigh 01535 274225. Village Voice is being produced by St Matthew’s and Trinity Churches, with the assistance of Overt Marketing, who are based in Wilsden. How appropriate that our first issue is in the Spring! We all love Spring don’t we? After a dark and wet winter we are ready for some daylight and some sunshine. We look around and see bulbs in bloom, blossom on the trees, and buds waiting to burst forth. We look forward to the Village Hall Fayre on 18th May, to the Annual Show in the Village Hall on the 21st September, and – exciting news - to the resurrected Wilsden Gala up on the Cricket Field on July 20th (see our editorial on page 24). And speaking of resurrection, we also look forward to celebrating Easter one way or another. For some of us it is the first Bank Holiday of the year, for some a chance for a good holiday, and for many an opportunity to overdose on chocolate. For others, though, it is the most important day in the calendar when we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead.

Vicar Bob I know it’s hard to believe, but without the resurrection the Christian Faith is nothing at all. Christians believe that the resurrection gives hope for not just the spring and summer seasons, but for evermore – and that’s a long time! Enjoy the new mag. Get involved in your village. And let’s enjoy being together at the big village events such as Easter Day worship, the Gala and the Horticultural Show.

In 2012 our church had a Year of Celebration. We had an exciting if exhausting year of activities ranging from a posh tea party and flower festival to a family fun day (which took us right outside our comfort zone).

There has been Christian worship on this site for well over 200 years and an exhibition of our history gave us an opportunity to enjoy a good old wallow in nostalgia Looking at the hard work and commitment of our forefathers over two centuries also challenged us to look to the future and how we could continue to serve God and our village. In response to this we began two new groups. ‘’Friends and Heroes’’ is a group for primary school age children and is a kind of ‘’Sunday School on a Friday’’ with a DVD, tuck shop, craft activities and lots of fun. ‘’Soupermums’’ is a kind of luncheon club for mums with young babies. All this has been hard work but very rewarding.

“I came to church primarily for my children. I wanted them to go to Sunday School. I felt I needed help in explaining to them the big things in life – why we should look after people weaker than ourselves, why we should do good things not bad. I didn’t feel up to the task all by myself, but I knew there were people in the church who were. And you know what? They did. They helped my children to become the people they are now, and how proud I am of them.”

Church life can involve a good deal of hard work and feverish activity and it is good sometimes to stop for a moment and remember why we are doing it. As part of our exhibition we were invited to write our thoughts on ‘’What Church Means to Me’’. The responses were many and varied and we would like to share some of them with you:-

‘’In many circles, it was once thought that science would eventually find the answer to ‘Life, the Universe and Everything’ and that God would become a ‘defunct concept’. What is encouraging is that we are seen overall to be a warm, loving and welcoming group of people seeking God at our own levels, accepting and supporting each other along the journey.

Garde i g Associatio is a bloomi g success Wilsden Gardening Association was formed in 1976 by a small group of gardeners who had acquired allotment land behind the new St. Matthews Church on Main Street. The Association grew and in 1986 the trading hut was opened next to the Church. With the Sunday trading ban being imposed the membership grew to over 200 and the Association turn over in the hut exceeded ÂŁ10.000 in one year. In the 1980â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Wilsden Show was partly organised by the Wilsden Womens Institute and the WGA but in 1987 the WI handed total responsibility to the WGA and now the Show is regarded as one of the best village shows in the area. Although membership has declined over the years The WGA has continued to raise funds to stage

the Wilsden Show and the Show Secretary, Roger Golton is now organising his 27th show. The Gardening Associations activities can be found on their website www. wilsdengardeningassociation.com Over the years the WGA has donated hundreds of pounds to local charities and three wooden benches have been donated to the village. Next event is the Spring Fayre at the village hall on Sunday, 18th May.

Some of us love change and others hate it, but none of us can escape it. It’s all around us and we have to learn to live with it.

Sometimes change is forced on us by economics as commercial organisations try to do things more cost effectively – so we find ourselves with machines at the Co-op that talk to us, or unable to find out information without an internet connection. Sometimes change comes with breakthroughs in technology and, for better or for worse, we find ourselves able to speak to all our friends without ever seeing them, or even opening our mouths, and all in a few clicks from a Smart Phone.

“Some change has come about because we have changed” And some change has come about because we have changed. Over many years there has been a shift in how we learn and in what we are prepared to believe. In days gone by, my teacher wrote stuff on a blackboard, and I copied it down into an exercise book, to be re-read, and then regurgitated in an exam. Nowadays our children are given many different ways to learn through interaction and discovery.

In terms of our beliefs, there was a time when allegedly we all claimed to be of the Christian Faith as it was presented to us, complete with corruptions and distortions. You don’t need to go back that far to find you could be thrown out of church for not believing the ‘right’ thing! But nowadays, we are a thinking people, we no longer all believe what we are told to believe, we want to question, and reflect, and make up our own minds. We don’t believe because our parents did, or because everyone else does, and it takes a brave soul now to buck the trend and to stand out from the crowd by being a Christian. In St Matthew’s we have a lovely community where we support and care for one another through the whole of life, and it is centred on our worship of God. We worship in traditional ways associated with the Church of England, although we try not to take ourselves too seriously. We have a super choir, and we do it well ……….. but we know that this kind of worship is not to everyone’s taste. So we have started something new called ‘Café Church’. Members of the Café Church have more fun than boredom, and we enjoy fresh coffee and some lovely cake! We share with one another in response to questions posed, and we get to know more about what makes each one of us tick. Many of us have real questions about the Christian Faith and that’s fine – it all adds to the fun. You don’t have to believe to belong – you are welcome to belong and to allow your belief to develop (or not) over time. One of the lovely things about Café Church is that the age range of our regular attendees is from 10 to 80 years. Sometimes when the more youthful members come up with a drama, or the various groups of us gathered around tables compete in a quiz of some kind, it’s more like pantomime than church. But it is fun – and it can also be deeply moving…….. Everyone is welcome at Café Church – it runs from 11.00 to 12.00 most Sundays at St Matthew’s (but not on the second Sunday of the month). Wilsde Parish Cou cil celebrates 10th birthday i July By Ruth Batterley

Wilsden Parish Council celebrates its 10th anniversary in June of this year. During this time the parish council has seen many changes and has contributed to the life of Wilsden and Harecroft through its dealings with Bradford Council, the police, youth service and other local agencies. This is all done to make Wilsden a better place in which to live. The parish council currently supports amongst others, the village library, the community transport scheme, The Wilsden Walling Group and the village hall through grants and other forms of support. It provides the hanging baskets in the summer and provides the Christmas lights and trees. The parish council has recently introduced a grant scheme and can award grants to local groups that benefit Wilsden and Harecroft. If you would like information about the scheme, please get in touch with the Clerk. The council has nine elected councillors, details of whom can be found on the Wilsden Parish Council website: www.wilsdenparishcouncil.gov.uk. The councillors receive no allowances for their work. HISTORY

Let's have a Gala By Astrid Hansen

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries village galas, carnivals and royal anniversaries were major social occasions. Entertainment was much more home made and locally based and many who might have been regarded as local dignitaries were happy to play their part. In Wilsden this included at various times the doctor, policeman and councillors, while mill owners and their wives were on hand to present prizes.

The photo (bottom of page) shows the 1913 procession, best clothes and hats much in evidence. The earliest record of such an event in Wilsden is in 1852 when the Mechanics Committee followed their Annual Meeting with a Festival held on Copy Field, Lee Lane. There were stalls selling provisions and two bands were engaged. Later galas were held on a variety of different fields around the village and, like more recent ones, included stalls, displays, entertainments and competitions. The tradition lapsed after 1947, apart from a one-off celebration in coronation year,

until revived in 1971 by the newly formed Wilsden Village Society. Many of their galas were given a theme. Who remembers the Highland gala led by the City of Leeds Pipe Band, or the Wild West, or more topically in this year of the Grand Depart, the Sporting gala of 1983, with the Wilsden W I prize winning Rugby float? The Gala Committee of the WVS put on galas each year until 1988. After this the village hall warden Jeff Moore and the youth club, and later the Village Hall Committee, took over organisation, although many of the ‘old hands’ still found themselves putting up bunting, collecting PA equipment, selling programmes etc., some right up to the most recent event. Some of us will remember well the weeks of anxiety, desperate searches for a roundabout to hire, waking on gala day to stare at the sky as we agonised about whether to set up outside or make the best of it under cover. But we also remember a huge amount of fun, and friendships made as we shared the preparations, and the relief at the end of the day, as we all said “Never again …..until the next time!” Here’s hoping the new team will get as much fun and satisfaction from the ‘W’ Gala on July 20th, and will get the support they so richly deserve for keeping this great tradition going.

Wilsde ers pitch i to revive village gala By Lisa Firth (on behalf of Wilsden Gala Committee)

After the 2013 Wilsden Gala was cancelled for the second time in three years, a group of village residents decided it was time to roll up their sleeves and get the much-loved family event back on track. Now a new gala committee with a record number of members is at the helm to take the 2014 event back to its glory days. This year’s gala is relocating from the park to the cricket field, where it was popularly held for much of its history. It will take place on 20th July from 2pm following the traditional procession through the village in fancy dress. The theme chosen by the committee is ‘The Big W’ (W for Wilsden of course!). Fancy dress ideas range from Wombles to Wonderland, and we look forward to seeing people getting creative on the day! As always, there will be prizes for the best costume efforts, with categories for Best Fancy Dress (Girl), Best Fancy Dress (Boy), Best Walking Tableau (Group), Best Float (Group), Best Bike/Scooter/Skateboard (Individual) and Best Pram/ Buggy (Individual). Attractions at the gala itself will include old favourites from previous years - Splat the Rat, Hoopla, Lucky Dip, Tin Can Alley, Welly Wanging, Coconut Shy, Beat the Goalie and many more. On top of that there will be a variety of stalls and games provided by village groups, as well as over 20 commercial stalls from local businesses selling toys, cards, gifts, cakes - and everything in between! There will also be children’s races, rides, a bouncy castle, bungee trampoline, photo booth, climbing wall, tea tent, beer tent for mums and dads, face painting, brass band and a barbecue, plus a dance performance from Jennifer’s Dancekool group and the main attraction, a birds of prey display. Basically there’ll be something for everyone! The gala is free to attend for both children and adults, with programmes available in advance and on the door for 50p (including entry into a prize draw). The event will be opened by this year’s gala queen, Lucy Hutchinson, with help from her attendants Vienna Welthy and Archie Morgan. Our gala VIPs were chosen during a special selection disco at the village hall

in March. The gala is an institution remembered with much fondness by those of us who grew up in the village. The committee is proud to be bringing new life to this event so it can be enjoyed by Wilsden’s children and adults for years to come, and we welcome new committee members and volunteers to assist with Wilsden Gala 2015. We must also say a massive THANK YOU from all the committee to everyone who has given up their time and resources so far to help make this the best gala ever! Can you help? Although we have had an excellent response to our appeal for helpers at this year’s gala, the committee still requires volunteers for the following roles: • Venue stewards • Procession marshals • First aiders • Van/lorry driver to collect, distribute and return Bradford Council ‘Road Closed’ signs for the procession Without the minimum number of stewards, marshals and first aiders specified by our insurance company the event will be in jeopardy, so please, please get in touch if you can give up some time on the day. Wilsde Village Hall - Is it here to stay?

From its opening in 1976 to its present day Wilsden Village Hall has been the backbone of community support in our area, providing a home for the uniformed organisations, dance groups, senior citizens, youth services, childcare and many many more community lead groups.

Keeping the hall solvent, is a mammoth task as the building is ageing, repairs are not cheap and we only have one full time member of staff, with limited resources, not an easy task. In 2013 the Committee made the decision to increase our charges, some groups accepted this others did not. It was not easy decision, we know the majority of our groups are self funding too, and the last thing the WVHMC wanted was to price groups out, we kept the charges as low as possible, thank fully our groups are still with us.

Many residents of Wilsden will remember its humble beginnings from the buy a brick campaign to the Bingley Aire faire, all raising funds to kick start the dream of Wilsden having its own community centre. Bradford council along with Library and Recreation services came on board supplying funding to allow a youth service to have a permanent base alongside a designated library area. For many years this funding helped assist the hall as a source of income. In 1998 a change in council policy resulted in the funding terminated, and WVH was left with a massive gap in its resources. This funding was re established a couple of years later but at a fraction of the original amount. Nowadays the Hall receives a yearly core funding grant from Bfd Met, of £3,666. Which may not be given next year as cuts continue to hit harder? There is also the possibility of losing the Youth Service this year!!!. Two years ago the Hall was rocked by a cut in Library services, which resulted in the committee of WVH fighting a ‘save the library` campaign, which sadly failed. Happily a dedicated group came forward to run a voluntary library and Wilsden Parish council stepped in assisting the library and the hall by providing a desperately needed and much welcomed grant. Today our library is still going strong due to

We have also diversified into childcare providing yet another service, and hold as many fundraising events as possible all to generate extra income, but these are becoming more difficult. Volunteers are harder to find, and events that capture the imagination and get customers’ spending is another. For the last few years the Gala has been the victim of these problems with not enough people coming forward to plan and execute the event safely. Two years on from a campaign asking for help – yes there was one! (In the T&A, posters, on the web, public announcement on the day of the last one!) “Don't just assume this Hall will always be here, it won’t” out on the day and join in. The Gala and events like it – Beer Festival 31st May, need your support, and help. We do also apply for funding pots – very time consuming and rarely successful as we are deemed a wealthy area! Many seem to presume these things will just happen year after year, and that the same people will do them, but we all age, grow up, move on and few come forward to take up the cause. We don’t just need the help of our users, parents and volunteers we need the younger generation to come forward, to step in give new ideas and safeguard our Centre for the future.

A few months ago we held a future planning event to ask our user groups, how they pictured the hall in the future, what did they need the hall to provide and is it still viable?. The resounding answer was yes, most groups would like their own space, storage, some would like more time. The overall response was they wanted the Hall to continue. We have a small group of staff and volunteers, who believe in what they are doing, but we need YOU, to support a group, volunteer to help, join the committee, or a fundraising group, help decorate a tired wall or mend broken equipment. Don’t think you have nothing to offer or no time, you’ll be surprised what little can help in a big way. The biggest threat to our survival is apathy! Don’t just assume this Hall will always be here, it won’t! It struggles daily to survive, who knows what the next 37 years will bring. A well supported Village Hall to be proud of - or another residential development. It’s up to you the residents of Wilsden to decide that one.

Celebrati g 50 years of Wilsde W.I. By Judy Caunt - President

Wilsden Women’s Institute was formed on 11th February 1963 in the Day School (now Wilsden Primary School) with 38 members attending. This followed the successful launch of Harden W.I. in January. Since those early days we have grown and now have over 62 members. We meet on the first Monday in the month at 7.30 pm in Wilsden Primary School and have a lively programme of speakers and events. Our Walking Club meet on a monthly basis and we have a bimonthly Culture Club visiting many places of interest such as a trip to Chester, a recent visit to Longley Hall, Huddersfield by candlelight and Renshaw Hall, Doncaster. We have a thriving Theatre Club and regularly attend Keighley Playhouse and often arrange Cinema visits. We have been pleased to undertake various Community projects over the last few years when we made a donation to purchase new crockery for the Luncheon Club and have planted a Rowan tree at Wilsden Health Centre to mark our 45th Anniversary. We have also donated a Union Flag to Wilsden Scouts to be paraded on St George’s Day and other special services and gave a Union Flag and flagpole to the village to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

We have also helped with catering for the village Gala for many years and for the Jubilee Celebrations in the Village Hall. To celebrate our 50th Anniversary (1963 – 2013) we have planted a Silver Birch tree in Wilsden Park in November 2012 and a plaque has been erected to mark this occasion. We recently ran a tombola at the Wilsden Winter Fair and raised £160 for Bradford Cancer Support and also donated £55 to Wharfedale Cave & Mountain Rescue. Members also raised £120 for Scout Graham Earnshaw to enable him to go to Peru to help the local communities. Our latest charity effort was to hold a fashion show in aid of Manorlands hospice on Wednesday 19th March when we were thrilled to raise £581.10. A Celebration Evening for our 50th Anniversary was held in April 2013 in Wilsden Village Hall when The Lady Mayoress of Bradford, Mrs Margaret Smith honoured us with her presence. The Scouts have a Camp this summer in the North Yorkshire Moors, Cubs have a weekend near Hebden Bridge planned and the whole group plans to go on the District Camp in the Summer Holidays. The Scouts and Explorers go on a trip to Switzerland every four years, and we will shortly be planning our next trip.

You may think that there’s oodles of time left before the Summer holidays; it’s barely even Easter! Yet here at Wilsden Primary School, we are already in the starting blocks for what promises to be another exciting (if a little exhausting) run down to the Summer.

April Easter is always a lovely time in school with our Reception children and their Easter bonnet parade to look forward to.

May After our Easter break we have our thoughts firmly fixed on the SAT’s tests; Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 6 will undergo their formal assessments to see how they are doing compared to children of

Windermere the same age Nationally. It’s always a nail-biting time for our children and families but we try to make things as relaxed and ‘normal’ as possible

June Trips to look forward to ....... residentials to Windermere and Robinwood (Todmorden) and lots of day trips to Nell Bank, Skipton Castle, Yorkshire Mining Museum and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

July After all that excitement, we can start to unwind, but just a bit, as we still have lots of things planned before the end of term. Our Year 6 leavers have a performance to do for their parents; we have our end of year/leavers disco to survive, not forgetting our red carpet event of the year ...... our annual Governors’ Awards Evening. All finished off by our final leavers’ assembly, when there will not be a dry eye in the house!
