We are the Yacht Crew Club, a new free of charge online organisation within the yachting world. As a member you will get our local newsletter, our monthly Magazine to read, invites to events and offers from suppliers. Soon you will also have access to our online membership platform for more exciting features. After a few trial events with the help from a few sponsors we realized that Yacht Crew Club had to be something much better then just a webpage and a Facebook page. For a long period of time nothing happened, but more and more people joined our group and page on Facebook. The company behind Yacht Crew Club, Clients & Clubs International SL, had a breakthrough with another membership club for expats in 2016. Then it all started to move? We launched this new webpage in March with our local newsletters for each port and our global glossy YachtCrewClub Magazine to read online every month. That will be followed by the launch in April of our online platform for all members with mobile apps to download on your mobile devices. With all these components launched we will quickly grow to the largest online organisation for captains, crew and the suppliers in the yacht industry. By El ain e Bu n tin g Some 30 sailor s have signed up for the retro Golden Globe Race 2018, an event that spur ns moder n technology and yacht design.

"It goes entirely against the grain of most professional events, a non-stop round the world race for smaller, long-keeled yachts stripped of almost all modern technology." While many races have struggled to raise fleet numbers in the last few years, one very old-fashioned and potentially slow race has already garnered 30 entries for its start in 2018, and another 150 have expressed interest in taking part. The Golden Globe Race goes entirely against the grain of most professional events, a non-stop round the world race for smaller, long-keeled yachts stripped of almost all modern technology. The race will be a modern-day re-run and a 50th anniversary celebration of the legend-making Golden Globe Race of 1968, the first ever non-stop sailing race round the world. A race

of utmost human endurance, it was famously won by a young Robin Knox-Johnston, while Bernard Moitessier decided to sail on. It was also tragically marked by the assumed suicide of Donald Crowhurst. This new race, run by Australian solo sailor and adventurer Don McIntyre will start on 14 June 2018. There will be a prize fund of ÂŁ75,000 to be split between the first four finishers. It is open to a very narrow spectrum of yachts: they must be series production glassfibre boats of 32-36ft built to designs drawn before 1988, have a minimum displacement of

6,200kg and a long keel and rudder hung from the trailing edge of the keel. The field is a mix of adventurers seeking to prove themselves in an extreme fashion and reflects an unusually broad international appeal. Skippers include Susie Bundegaard Goodall (26), Tim Newson (35) and Graham Applin (52) from the UK, Francesco Cappelletti (37) from Italy, Carl Huber (54) from the US and Estonian sailor Uka Randmaa (52), who has already made a solo circumnavigation. There are also skippers from Brazil, Switzerland, Australia, Norway, Ireland, Russia, Palestine and Austria. Among several French sailors entered are some veteran round the world racers: Eric Loizeau (66), began ocean sailing crewing for Eric Tabarly, sailed in the 1977/78 Whitbread Race and set a solo transatlantic record in 1986. Up against him will be one of France?s best-loved solo round the world

(70), pictured below, who has twice raced in the BOC Challenge, done two VendĂŠe Globes and is still holder of what some see as the most gruelling of all records, non-stop round the world westabout. ?VDH?as he is known, has cannily chosen a Rustler 36, which is at the upper end of the boat length allowed, decently canvassed and strongly built. ?Back in 1968, I was 23 and fascinated by the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. I would have loved to have competed in the race myself, but being a student, I was too young at that time without experience or money. Now, I have the experience and I find it easy to forget that I am one of the older entrants in this Race.? The race will hark back to the Sixties in almost every way. The race rules allow builds, but only to original designs, with no modification to interior, mast height or boom length, or any light weight fittings or components. No electronic autopilots or instruments will be allowed so skippers will have to navigate using a sextant and paper charts, they will have to handwrite their logs and will be able to communicate only by long-range HF radio.

Not long after, Azzam broke the record and placed Eclipse in the second position. However, everything can change if the superyacht L?Amage is built. L?Amage mega yacht concept has created a real buzz in the yachting and luxury industries. There is no wonder, as this is a 190-metre ?depiction of the future? superyacht concept, which was recently presented at the Monaco Yacht Show 2016.

L?Amage is a project developed by H. Bekradi from HBD Studios in collaboration with Christoph Kuhnert of the Yacht Naval Architects. The idea of the project is to combine the most advanced technology available with futuristic style. With a beam of 28.6m and overall length of 190 metres, L?Amage can accommodate 28 guests assisted by 70 crew members. There are 14 guest staterooms and a private apartment for the owner.

By using the innovative propulsion system and controllable-pitch propellers, this superyacht can reach a very impressive maximum speed of 32 kn, thanks to two diesel engines and and two gas turbines providing 95,000hp.

By M ar ia Kor otaeva The super yachting industry is booming, shipbuilders and yacht designers are clapping watching a demand for luxury yachts rising. However, the traditional business model of the world?s superyacht manufacturers is expected to undergo some major changes. The young generation of super-wealthy people differs from their parents when it comes to spending behaviour. Thus, Erwin Bamps, the CEO of Gulf Craft predicts a large increase in popularity of yacht charters versus yacht ownership. He mentions that technology will be a key driver in the super yachting industry in the future. Superyachts will still remain highly popular but the next generation of UHNWIs (ultra high net worth individuals) will prefer experience to ownership.

True bluewater cruising requires mission-specific vessels, the kind that look different on the docks and whose features can make a major difference a few hundred miles offshore. If the waypoints you intend to reach are along the path less traveled, then a yacht built for more than day cruises is a must. Check out the following models, any one of which can turn long-distance cruising

Trawlers are often associated with high-seas adventurers. Many yachtsmen who own them prefer to pick the second star to the right and go straight on till morning. Or they live aboard full time and follow their fancy: true sea dogs whose independence should be admired. They are a special breed, and they need an equally special breed of yacht made to cross oceans. Larry Polster, Kadey-Krogen?s vice president, is passionate about his company?s yachts.

?To me, [the term] trawler is about the styling of a vessel,? he says. ?The trawler?s dedicated pilothouse placement and function gives the vessel its trawler look, and the hull form built for long-range cruising sets the trawler apart from other craft. ?Unfortunately, many people are of the opinion that you can just run a well-constructed boat at 8 knots and that makes it a long-range cruiser,? he says. But a true ?long-range cruiser? must have a full-displacement hull form, ballast and a 3,000-nautical-mile range.

21 It is the best waterfront money can buy, and when you get tired of your neighbours, the scenery or the weather, you can just leave and take your home to a new location. The ballast is critical, Polster says, because it has to do with the vessel?s righting moment, or ?the force that is exerted to right the boat when it heels.? Without ballast, a boat can become susceptible to a big wave. The full-displacement hull helps with down-sea performance too. Supporting Kadey-Krogen?s hull design is a modern build incorporating impact-resistant fiberglass mat that contains Twaron, which is a fiber often used to give body armor its bulletproof capability. It is reportedly five times stronger than steel and up to 60 percent lighter than ballistic steel. A comfort factor also comes with this style of yacht. Polster says the trawler appeals to those who realize that boating doesn?t have to equate to camping. It?s a craft that allows for home-style furniture and full-size appliances.

Year in and year out, yacht owners seek vessels that can chase sunsets and make their long-range cruising dreams a reality. Outer Reef Yachts builds vessels for those die-hard yachtsmen. The builder says these owners want to ?go to locations others aren?t able to access.? They are interested in extended journeys without limits. To make that happen, Outer Reef says, yacht safety and robust yacht composition are the priorities. Outer Reef prefers using a semi-displacement hull design because, the builder says, the shape offers the best of both worlds. While most semidisplacement vessels do not generally cross oceans, many are

capable and have the range, stability and capability to do so. A semi-displacement vessel can take advantage of increased power and achieve greater speeds than a full-displacement hull. Applying additional horsepower does consume more fuel, but typically most semi-displacement vessels only take advantage of this speed when required, such as outrunning foul weather or transiting a rough inlet in daylight hours. The builder says semi-displacement yachts often operate in displacement mode, and they?re fuel efficient ? sometimes even more fuel efficient at displacement speeds than full-displacement vessels of the same length overall.

22 A semi-displacement hull form has less draft and therefore less wetted surface. The result? Less horsepower required to move the yacht through the water. A reduced draft is advantageous when anchoring in a relatively shallow-water area too. Outer Reef says it sees a trend in this market segment toward a younger demographic. These owners are also looking for a new design aesthetic. In response, Outer Reef, working with Setzer Yacht Architects, developed its Trident Series, which runs from 62 feet to 106 feet length overall. A hallmark of this voyager?s style is a wave-piercing plumb bow, which increases interior volume. Outer Reef says that the Trident models?interior volumes are on par with more traditional yacht designs in the 115- to 120-foot range, resulting in increased living space and, in turn, overall comfort when making long passages. If you?re looking to find a patch of blue water to call your own, Outer Reef aims to have a model and LOA that fits your dreams perfectly.

Previously a captain himself, he had a vision to build a yacht-sized ship seaworthy enough to travel anywhere in the world, and in 2006 his vision was realised when the incredible explorer vessel took to the water for her maiden voyage. ?The Hanse Explorer was built by a German shipbuilding company called Fassmer Werft,? explains Imke Harren, daughter of Peter, and commercial manager of the yacht. ?They specialise in high-end, sophisticated

rescue boats, research vessels, and patrol boats, which have to be incredibly reliable, and given that safety has always been very important to my father it seemed the perfect fit.? The Hanse Explorer was not only built to the highest safety standards, but also with the ultimate adventurer in mind. Since her first voyage out she has been taking passengers to some of the most remote and beautifully desolate parts of the planet: Antarctica and the Arctic. A certified icebreaker yacht with an extra thick steel hull, she is able to cut through the pack ice of the northern and southern oceans with ease, and has earned a reputation as the toughest yacht of her size.

The Polar Regions have been enticing the most adventurous spirits to their icy shores since humans discovered their existence, and for good reason. The first being the wildlife: a colossal tail breaching just metres from the yacht as a majestic humpback whale dives down to scoop up a ton or so of krill into its giant mouth; families of playful seals lazily circling the zodiac, while a flock of albatross call from the skies. Yet while the original adventurers to these barren icy lands visited in some considerable discomfort,

29 considerable discomfort, making the journey on the Hanse Explorer is a different and altogether more luxurious undertaking. ?Whenever I go on board I feel at home,? says Imke. ?It?s comfy and cosy, and the crew make you feel so welcome.? On board, guests can start their day with a freshly baked croissant and hot coffee on the deck, and finish it with a steam in the Finnish sauna, or a glass of wine in the lounge with panoramic views of passing Fjords and towering icebergs. Guests can personalise their time on board however they choose. ?Given that the ship can accommodate up to 12 guests, it?s also a very personal experience,? adds Imke. So, if guests enjoy sightseeing they can take in the expansive view from the bridge and watch the Captain manoeuvre the ship through ice. If they?re interested in mechanics, they can head down to the engine room and talk with the Chief Engineer. And if they?re hungry or just wondering what?s for dinner, they can visit the galley and meet the Chef, Sous Chef and Galley Assistant. Once you?ve arrived in the world?s last great wildernesses, the opportunities for exploration on offer are more than a little exciting. Spend a night under the stars by camping out on the ice, or try kayaking along the pristine, reflective waters. If whales are on the horizon, jump onto one of the zodiac boats for a spontaneous ride to get up close to nature, or spend time ashore with a group of penguins. One great advantage of the Hanse Explorer, explains Imke, is that ?she can go

We?ve also made some successful explorations to the very remote islands of the South Pacific and Galapagos, as well as having crossed the famous North West Passage in her.? Currently being prepped for the next season, she?ll wind through the narrow passages of Norway?s fjords and then continue on to Iceland, Greenland and Canada. Although it takes a few days from the moment of departure to reach the Polar Regions, the adventure begins from the moment you set foot on the Hanse Explorer. If travelling to Antarctica, expeditions depart from Ushuaia, the world?s southernmost city. Yacht photography is a fine art, and in the age of the internet, it has never been more important for luxury superyachts to be depicted in a light that does justice to their stunning aesthetics. We spoke to Captain and yacht photographer, Mark O?Connell ? owner of an eponymous yacht photography website ? to learn more about his favourite hobby. How do you find time to be a Captain and a professional photogr apher ? I?m on a yacht that is travelling to some of the nicest places in the world, so I?m right there! It?s right in front of me! I?m in the best position imaginable to do both. Everywhere we go I get to see other yachts and these amazing places, and so I can capture images of fascinating things. I was trained by the military ? a long time ago ? while working in various places. I had to leave the military due to an injury but it meant I had to choose another professional. I got into yachting and it was on one of my trips that I realised that I didn?t have a camera to record these incredible places, so I decided to get back into it. I started taking photographs and everybody was impressed. They advised me to start selling them. I thought why not? So I started my own website, which now has over 5,000 photographs and it does very well. What kind of yachts do you like to photogr aph? Everything. I have no preference. I don?t only photograph yachts; I also photograph wildlife and art. I create art from my photographs ? paintings. I print my photographs onto a canvas using a special programme, which makes them look like paintings. Everything I?ve produced so far has sold within hours of me producing it. For what pur pose are your photogr aphs mainly

My website is used by people who need photographs for their websites, and for their advertising and marketing. It?s all about marketing really. 33 What makes for a great yacht photogr aph? Content. Knowing what to put in the photograph. It?s no good having a picture with a dull background, taken in rough weather. It?s all about finding something very special. There?s one picture on my website of the Maltese Falcon under full sail, just at the moment of sunset in St Barts. They sailed past us as we were at anchor. Content is so important: people take pictures of sunsets but it?s boring. There has to be an object, such as a sail boat, going past it. It makes the picture much more interesting. You have to visualise what the photo

will look like. Even if it?s a case of running along the beach to get a palm tree in the shot. It?s all to do with the make-up of the photo. Which would you say is your favour ite yachting destination? I would probably say Asia. Asia in general ? Indonesia, Thailand or the Philippines. I s there anything about these countr ies that make them good for shooting photogr aphs? Yes. There?s a picture around every corner. There?s nothing boring about any of it. I take pictures of the people too. I

have a whole section on my website on Asian culture. Do you use one camer a religiously? Are you loyal to one par ticular br and? I was using a Canon but then I found out that Canon cameras use Sony sensors. I investigated further and decided to go for the latest Sony camera, called a Sony Alpha 7R. It?s amazing: it has 42 million pixels! It gives you so many more things than a Canon. I can produce amazing photographs with it. I use an adaptor that means I can use my Canon lenses. Have you ever entered your photogr aphs into

competitions? Yes, I have won competitions through various websites. I am quite highly ranked on a website called Guru. Thousands of other photographers grade you; I?m now on Master. Have you ever y displayed your paintings in a public setting? Yes, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. They sold immediately. The Brokers are more than happy to display them on their stands. I haven?t pushed photography enough because of my schedule. I?m sure I could display my photos in more places.

AZZAM Azzam is the world?s largest and most luxury private yacht, built in 2013 by Lurssen Bardenfleth shipyard in Germany. On board there is fitness center, cinema and 11 luxury staterooms, each with it's own balcony and wonderful sea-view. Also on board there is a small submarine for boarding of VIP guests in full privacy. The interior design of the yacht was created by Christophe Leoni, who implemented really amazing style, but also introduced lot of entertainments for the guests, such as jacuzzi, restaurant and conference room. The engineering of the super yacht Azzam is reliable, strong and highly

efficient. The main engines are two Wartsila diesel units with total power of 47,000 hp plus two gas turbines with total output power of 47,000 hp. The propulsion system of the yacht Azzam is enough for the service speed of 32.0 kts. The yacht?s engineering is from a new generation having lower consumption and using optimizations of the modern marine engineering. Moreover, the high speed on board is ensured by the powerful systems, lower resistant hull shape and high efficient propellers. The super yacht is driven by four pump-jets, two of which are non-movable round water outlets in the middle of the stern, and

35 using moveable duct water outlets positioned on either side of the non-movable ones. The whole hull and superstructure is made by steel and protected with armor by fire, which is important, when having some of the richest and most world?s most powerful people. Moreover, the yacht also has own missile defense system and own stealth technology. By Br u ce M axwel l What?s not to like about exploring the China Coast, circumnavigating Australia, wining and dining on the French Riviera, or living it up on Miami?s hip South Beach? Big boat shows take place at such venues. Well-heeled boaters may consider buying a motor yacht to impress clients, or for company conferences, or to facilitate incentive cruises. Perhaps the charter market appeals. Other visitors could try selling marine accessories, or even luxury brands, from fine wines and watches to sports cars and helicopters. Marketing, PR and media roles qualify, as do promoting exotic marinas and resorts. Agreed payments, tax benefits and expense refunds can thus accrue, and some Asia-Pacific countries offer financial incentives to exporters. A rationale is needed for travel anyway. Why not mix business with pleasure, and use boat shows as a prime purpose for voyaging abroad? It?s fun, and personal contacts often lead to glamorous new lifestyle opportunities. Some youngsters even become superyacht crew. What are the current options? Nor th Asia Let?s begin with the powerhouses of North Asia: North China, South Korea and Japan. French lass Delphine Lignieres, founder of the Hainan Rendez-vous, has tried So! Dalian events since 2014 to hopefully attract Beijing boaters to this Russian-established coastal city in Liaoning. The next one, targeting people who have a passion for the sea and beach polo, is to be held on the weekend from July 8 to 9. Twenty brands are taking part. Yantai, formerly Chefoo, on Dalian?s opposite

peninsula, is where several superyachts have so far been built, including the 90m proa Asean Lady based at Raffles Marina in Singapore, and Nero, recently the largest superyacht shown at the Monaco Yacht Show. South Korea, on the eastern shores of the Yellow Sea, is more formally organised, in a pleasure boating sense, with their Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries backing two events: the Busan International Boat Show (BIBS), held from March 23 to 26, and Korea International Boat Show (KIBS), held on the outskirts of its capital Seoul from May 25 to 28. March 2 to 5. It has moved to Tokyo?s port city

Japan International Boat Show (JIBS) is held from Yokohama. One can easily stay in Tokyo and commute daily, or Yokohama itself can also be quite interesting. After the heady entrepreneurial 1980s, JIBS has been relatively quiet, reflecting the country?s long, slow recession since then, but there have been recent signs that boating may be picking up.

South China The show moved across the Huangpu River to the Shanghai World Expo Centre in Pudong for some years, and this year, the 22nd China (Shanghai) International Boat Show (CIBS), held from April 26 to 29, changes venue again to the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). Shanghai itself has always been the strongest lure for foreign exhibitors. There are few facilities for boaters, and local cruising waters are poor, so CIBS has become effectively a core marine trades event. Redevelopment of the Wuyuan Bay waterfront has caused the boat show, held in November, to be split into separate in-water and hard standing sectors of late, but like Sydney?s show, it is now re-merging. Taiwan International Boat Show was relaunched in 2014, ?15 and ?16 in Kaohsiung, where most of the boat building yards are

located, and it is presently slated for March 10 to 13, 2018, moving to a biannual schedule. Prime movers include Taiwan Trade or Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), Kaohsiung City and Horizon Yachts, one of the world?s top 10 builders. A new in-water exhibition centre and hard standing are located close to leading hotels and the Central Business District (CBD). Lately renamed Horizon City Marina, this facility can be visited anytime. Hong Kong International Boat Show at Club Marina Cove, on Sai Kung?s eastern seaboard, is held from December 1 to 3, 2017. A fairly full marina has restricted in-water display space in recent years. Hong Kong Gold Coast Boat Show at Gold Coast Yacht and Country Club, in the territory?s western approaches, is usually held late April or early May, but a substantial marina upgrade taking

place means this event has been suspended until further notice. Various venues in Hong Kong-Kowloon CBDs have been tried when regional dealer Mike Simpson and I were running the Hong Kong Marine Traders Association, but choppy conditions in the harbour have always proved a problem. South East Asia Singapore Yacht Show (SYS) is supported by OneÂ° 15 Marina?s owner Arthur Tay, and has steadily built up exhibitors, attracting a few passing superyachts. As a yacht show with high-value accessories on display, it is certainly the largest in Asia at present, and Singapore?s famed East- West ambience and central geographic location helps its image, as does the city-state?s growing reputation as the financial hub for the whole region. The next SYS is scheduled from April 6 to 9, 2017.

The first edition last October proved highly popular. It brought together all the key luxury components from properties, yachts, supercars and classic cars, to watches, fashion, art, fine wines and champagne. Said a spokesman: ?An affluent audience of 5,800 visitors had a chance to interact with carefully selected brands, and were able to broaden their interests and experiences. Yacht dealers in particular, reported many qualified leads, and

A second Singapore RendezVous takes place from October 5 to 8, 2017. In Thailand, SYS started Thailand Yacht Show (TYS) in Phuket in February 2016 at Ao Po Grand Marina, having first announced a charter yacht show at rival Phuket Yacht Haven. Thai Government backing was obtained, and TYS was held again at Ao Po mid- December, only weeks before Andy Dowden?s 14th annual Phuket Boat Show (PIMEX) at Royal Phuket Marina over January 5 to 8, WWW.YACHTCREWCLUB.COM

38 Marina over January 5 to 8, 2017. This was well-booked, and went ahead regardless. The first TYS had more exhibitors than visitors. The turnout for the second TYS merely improved with the participation of leading local dealer Lee Marine, and organisers said 55 vessels took part, including the 90m Lauren L hosting a Titan Brokers party, the 41m Norman Foster-designed Ocean Emerald, 50m Northern Sun being offered for charter by Burgess Yachts, an eight-vessel line-up from the Boat Lagoon featuring a Princess 32m, and the steel Sanlorenzo 46m Forwin. The third TYS is scheduled December 14 to 17, 2017. Phuket RendezVous with an inaugural edition to be held from January 4 to 7, 2018, with Andy Dowden. This is the second such event under the Asia RendezVous umbrella, and more are planned for other Asian cities.

In the Gulf of Thailand, the annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show at Pattaya-Jomtien is held in late November, and offers direct access to the Bangkok market only a short drive away, whereas Bangkok to Phuket is a one-hour flight. This event is normally well- attended, and vessels like Ocean Emerald above are based there for the last charter season. Vietnam?s largest show is of a more maritime commercial bent, but some pleasure boats are also built on the coast. The 4th Indonesia Yacht Show takes place April 21 to 23, at Batavia Sunda Kelapa Marina in Jakarta, and there are other fledgling events in Sri Lanka and India. Australia and New Zealand are advanced boating markets. The largest events on Australia?s East Coast have been at Sanctuary Cove from May 25 to 28 on the Gold Coast, the epicentre of the country?s boat building industry, and

at principal city Sydney, from August 3 to 6. The latter has been split for several years while new exhibition halls are built at its lovely in-water Darling Harbour location. This year marks its return to one easily navigable central CBD venue. Rest of the Wor ld Gold Coast International Boat Show will be held over three days from March 17 to 19. Riviera is a prominent participant, as is Gold Coast City Marina, which offers in-water berths to other non-Riviera exhibitors. In West Australia, one well-supported event is at Mandurah, south of Perth and held from October 6 to 8, not far from Henderson?s Australian Marine Complex where 70m to 90m superyacht builders like Echo and SilverYachts are based. Across the Tasman Sea, the more local Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show is held in suburban Auckland showgrounds from May 18

to 21, and the International Auckland On-Water Boat Show is in September. September is the month to visit Europe: Cannes Yachting Festival in early September, drive down the coast to explore the Genoa Boat Show and boat building centre Viareggio, perhaps calling at Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino in between, then finish with the inimitable Monaco Yacht Show. Paris, London and Dusseldorf are three other big ones, but they take place in mid-winter. In the United States, Ft Lauderdale International Boat Show, held from November 2 to 6 in Florida, is a month after Monaco. Billed as the world?s largest, a claim challenged only occasionally by Dusseldorf, it spans five venues, and one could spend all five days in the principal Bahia Mar site alone. Miami is in February, and Palm Beach in March, geographically located on either side of Ft Lauderdale. In the Middle East, the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) is held from February 28 to March 4, and is definitely worth attending for anyone who wants to get a hang of what?s happening in the always-evolving United Arab Emirates and the wider Middle East. Other boat shows are also held in Turkey and Lebanon.

Let?s compare this to chartering a 45ft yacht from Kavas in low season? This could cost you ?2400, though you will be spending money on beer, food and marina fees as you enjoy your week afloat. That could cost you another ?1000, or with the cost of taking the luxury boat out around the Aegean somewhere around 30% of the cost of owning the boat on the South Coast of the UK! Inside a luxur y yacht : a t our of super yacht Tit ania by her billionair e ow ner John Caudwell Yacht Style explores the superyacht Titania and finds out the allure it had that drew John Cauldwell to purchase the yacht. By Robbie W il son Who knew the Phones 4U founder had a love for the seas? As an owner of several yachts, John Caudwell enjoys spending several weeks per year on the open water. His largest yacht is the Titania by Lurssen. At 73 meters in length and a 2000 gross tonnage, she is one of the largest and most luxurious yachts currently available for charter in Asia. Previously named Apoise, the yacht was originally built in 2006 and was 67m in length. When Caudwell acquired her through an auction, he revamped the entire ship, which included extending the length. Founded in 1875 by Fredrich Lurssen, the German shipyard is known for crafting beautiful luxury yachts. In fact, Caudwell owns two from the specialists. When asked how his experience as a customer has been with Lurssen, he responds ?they?re an exceptional superyacht builder. The quality and workmanship achieved on the conversion significantly exceeded my expectations. It was perfection. These were very significant changes and I have to say that Lurssen did an amazing job since it is completely impossible to see that the work has been done, even if you search for it.? When asking Caudwell what he likes most about owning a superyacht, he says he always fills the yacht up to capacity with his friends and family. He states that he wanted the yacht to be very appealing to families of all ages and that the final ingredient is to have a passionate and wonderful crew. Where does the name come from, I ask? Titania is pretty unique. ?I wanted a name that conjured up romanticism, mystery and excitement. I also wanted to install a bow sprit to make the boat even more distinctive. There are only a couple of boats out there that do this, one being Phoenix. I wanted a figure that was very feminine and attractive,? he says. Well Titania certainly does this and after

further discussion, I learn that Titania is actually the name of the Queen of the Fairies from A Midsummer Night?s Dream. Caudwell has created a beautiful sculpture of her in which he describes as ?a scantily clad gorgeous lady with a little bit of romance and mystery.?

As I investigated the situation and its owner, Dave Ritchie, of Ritchie Bros Auctioneers, the more I realised this was a genuine sale.? He then flew to the Cayman Islands to spend the night on board the yacht and speak with the owner. ?I fell in love with it and bought it, albeit after a few minutes of extreme tension as I was the only buyer in the room bidding against others on the telephone.? As the yacht is available for charter, Caudwell only uses it around four weeks per year. Josh Arnold cites a survey of crews in the ARC transatlantic rally last year and Elaine Bunting reports first hand By El ain e Bu n tin g Seasickness is an age-old problem, but how common is it and how can we prevent or treat it? We conducted a survey among 450 sailors taking part in the ARC rally last year, to find out how people coped with this dreaded affliction. The 2015 ARC provided participants with an exciting start to their ocean passage. During the first few days there were 25-40-knot winds, with large seas around the wind acceleration zones to the south of the Canary Islands and bumpy seas. With only a few days of calm conditions for most

Prevention and treatment There is now a wide range of countermeasures available to aid in the battle against seasickness. Some are founded on good practice and evidence, while others are more controversial. Some 162 people on the ARC took some kind of action to combat seasickness, and 78 per cent rated their chosen methods as effective and helpful to them in some form.

Other factor s We must not forget the importance of distractions to counteract many seasickness symptoms. A large number of anecdotal accounts from the survey addressed the need to ?keep busy?, find things to do such as helming, trimming, cleaning or cooking. Scientific evidence suggests that controlled breathing can help, as can viewing a distant horizon. Evidence supporting the use of acupressure bands is controversial and this seems to be recognised by ARC sailors ? there were few references to these in our survey. Seasickness is an unavoidable hurdle that many sailors continue to have to overcome. But on a positive note, the survey shows that symptoms do ease with time and are often short-lived.

Other factors not addressed by the survey, yet of potential interest include the conclusion in a 2012 report that motion sickness is considered to have a heritability of around 57-70 per cent, and racial differences in sensitivity appear to exist. In 1980 John Lennon (pictured above with his Beatles bandmates) took a 600-mile journey from Rhode Island to Bermuda aboard a 13.4 metre schooner called Megan Jaye. The innovations and optimisations introduced will be applied across the entire range as designers Officina Italiana Design work through their task of carrying this range into the future. In particular, attention has been paid to developing the bow from a couple of slanted sunpads (notoriously wasted space on many motor yachts) to a proper living space that anyone can use. half, sternwards, has room for 3 or 4 loungers. Access, uniquely, is from within the saloon amidships dining area, the bottom of the gangway being right outside the galley door. Diners upstairs are thus assured of hot food as are the diners below. Both these dining areas, and a third in the cockpit, comfortably seat 8, so rain or shine, or something in between are all covered. The 8 ft extra in length from the former entry-level boat, the SL72, translates into quite a bit

more space as the beam increases a little too. The saloon, forward of the substantial cockpit is accessed through foldaway rear doors and begins with the lounge, then the dining area and access to the flybridge. Lighting is improved by the use of cutaway bulwarks to allow more light to reach the windows. Forward of this is the galley, which can be open-plan or closed and then the inside helm position, centred. To port of this is the access to the crew cabins. Passenger access to the cabins is below the flybridge access gangway. Master Cabin design comes in two flavours: full width cabin including an ensuite bathroom, or full width cabin plus an ensuite bathroom to the side. The big bed moves from off-centre to centred in the larger version but most of the extra space is given over to walk-in closets.

The larger master cabin version is achieved by eliminating the port twin cabin. The starboard twin and the for?ard double are both en-suite in both versions. There is a crew twin-bunk berth in the port bow with its own head.

Right behind the main cabin is the engine room and its twin MTU 1,523hp diesels and sternmost of all is the garage, so the tender goes below the cockpit rather than on the stern of the flybridge as is common in this class.
