Be Positive!

Yes after so much, we are finally here. I am super excited as I have anticipated this moment for some time. When I first got the idea to create this magazine, I rejected the idea immediately. As the weeks begin to go by I begin to dream about what I would do if I created a magazine. I thought maybe this is just a phase it will pass, well I guess it didn’t. We tried to bring you an issue to introduce you to w h a t w e a r e a l l a b o u t . We h a v e a wonderful designer who encoura ges women through her fashions. A make-up artist who believes God already made us beautiful we just want to give it a little more intensity. We looked into some great food tips and thought we’d give you a review of the fantastic pleasantries of ‘The Gentleman’ and bring you all the positivity we could muster in this issue. We also felt that you would love some uplifting words from some great people. We are saying, “We see you!” to those who are not afraid to t a l k a b o u t G o d . O u r m a g a z i n e

We will work hard to give you want you want and pack every issue with something spectacular. I am so happy to bring you this issue, but I want you to feel like this is our magazine. I want you to be apart of it just as much as I am. Write in to us. Tell us what you think, what you hate, what you love. Let us know how we can best help you in your walk with Christ. We want you to not only be entertained but inspired. We pray that the words inside bless you in many ways, that they will yield you much fruit and will assist you in your walk with God. This magazine is: Your Voice! Your say! God’s Way! We love you but God loves you 100%!

YOU CAN DO THIS! By: Kiersten Lane Johnson Trying to balance everything life throws your way can be stressful. Work, family, bills and other things can make it sometimes hard to exercise or practice living a healthy lifestyle. Even if you have time to work out, you may not be in the mood to do so. In Philippians 3:14, God says in his Word, “We can do ALL things through Christ, which strengthens us.” Through life, we may find it hard to keep ourselves motivated and remain positive while working out. You have just talked about the latest fashion trends, what style you are leaning most to at the moment and discussing colors for the new collection. The teleconference is about to end and your boss comes back on the line. “Let’s end the conference in prayer. Are there any prayer requests?” Not the typical climax to your meeting? Yea we know, but this is not your average or typical company this is LeRiche/ LeRiche Couture. And spearheading this magnificent company is a distinguished women who loves six inch heels over flats, polka dots to stripes, changing up her hair from silky straight to beachy wavy, and says ‘No’ your makeup should not match your clothes, Ms. Le Richardson and her motto is Beauty + Strength =Destiny. Lady Le Richardson

23 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

Why the name LeRiche? Well actually my full name is Le Richardson. But it’s not just an abbreviation of my name, in French, Le Riche means “the rich” and I believe that the rich stuff is in all women. I love your logo. How did you come up with it? Our logo has a hidden message in it. Beauty Strength Destiny comes from 2 Chronicles I can’t tell you exactly where from Chronicles because it hit me in the middle of a church service. There is a cross is the middle of the logo and our cross is not just to be cool but because Jesus is the key to our destiny and a little to the Trinity as well. He is LeRiche and we are LeRiche through him. He’s the CEO I just show up. What made you want to start a clothing line? Through undergrad I’ve always been involved in the industry. And I did a lot of designing and creating in the small realm up until currently and I thought it was a good time to go ahead and start my own line because I had been doing things quietly for others for years. You have different collections in your line, what made you choose those? and what’s next? That’s a good question. LeRiche Couture is the TShirt line and it’s more of the fun everyday wear collection for women. I believe in dressing women inside and out. There are so many lines out there of T-Shirts that really are provocative and not very empowering so I felt like there was a missing piece in the market to empower young women. Now when I say young women I mean all women because we are forever young. But I felt as though there was nothing out there that really dealt with the heart of the woman, the inner beauty and the outer beauty. We chose the T-Shirt line to really empower women and to help them understand what the

brand is about. And also as the mother of a teenage son and mentor to many teenage girls, I saw a lot of girls with a lot of interesting T-Shirts that I got so sick of saying “I kissed your boyfriend and I liked it” “I love coverflame” and those things just really made me say we have to do something. So that’s where LeRiche Couture came from. LeRiche which is the dress collection, it really speaks back to the outer beauty to empower women to feel confident, bold, and beautiful and being sure of themselves and their bodies. If you noticed I only do dresses, because I feel like that speaks to the femininity of a woman and so many women in this time have lost femininity and I think dresses speak to that. What is fashion to you? O wow, that’s a great question. I think fashion is freedom of speech. It’s a freedom of expression and gives us the ability to be whoever we want in that moment. For a women I think it’s the ultimate of playing dress-up, we all play dress up as girls right? And you get to do that everyday keeping up with the trends, mixing your own styles with current fashion. Fashion to me is adult dress up, freedom of speech, and freedom of expression. And for a women it allows us to show our true femininity. You keep mentioning the essence of a female. And this issue we are dealing with positivity. Would you say with your T-Shirt line that is what you were going for? Creating a more positive image than that from society? I think so. Women themselves are very hard on each other, we look at each other and we pick out every flaw. Some even say that women dress for other women. I really feel that there is so much opportunity for growth in our gender and I wanted the T-Shirt line to really speak to what’s inside of women that they don’t even realize yet and what’s inside of girls that they don’t realize yet.

LOVE and LACE Collection

25 MyG Magazine ÂŚ January/February 2012

And how different they are inside and out and how to respect that. And yea I really wanted the T-Shirt line to speak to the heart of women and to the destiny of women. What is your favorite style? Well.. If you noticed in the new collection of LeRiche dress, called Love and Lace, that is coming out very soon. My style is inspired by life and culture. It’s hard to say that I have a favorite style because there are so many styles that I like. But the things that I like to draw are taken from different cultures. I believe all cultures should be revered and appreciated because women from all races, creeds, backgrounds, religions are beautiful and they bring something very interesting to the table in the perspective of how they dress. And then I believe that life itself brings style. When you think about, for example, the love and lace dress collection that is coming out this spring, it’s inspired by love and romance. Like how love is flirty and fun sometimes and love sometimes becomes a lot of work and then sometimes love is very romantic and full of great surprises. I think my clothing is drawn from the inspiration of culture and the inspiration of life, I think those two things would have to depict my style. Do you find yourself pulling things from specific decades, like I like flapper dresses of the 20s, does that effect your style? I depends on the season and where you are for that season. This season I was really inspired by the lifestyle of the Parisian women. How they live there lives in a capacity that is sophisticated, chic, and sexy without being forced. We live in a society where everything is so forced sexy and when you look at the lifestyle of a women in Paris she is

confident and she’s chic and simplistic in her sexy but not overdone. With the way women dress today do you think it’s too modern or too much? Well I think... Everything has a time and a place. I spoke to about 500 girls at a high school just recently, back in February. And I told them that I think number one it has to do with age group. I think that younger women and young girls are too provocative and oversexy and it is not appropriate for their age group. So I told them, for example, prom is coming up pick one. If you are going to be sexy and that’s your goal, pick one, if you are going to have cleavage, then stick to the cleavage, if you are going to have your back out, then stick with your back out, if you are going to have a short dress then have a short dress, but you cannot have all three. You can’t have cleavage, your back out, and a short dress. You have to pick one. And even as a women with femininity we don’t have to show everything that we have to offer to be considered sexy or beautiful. Sometimes mystique is actually a good thing. It’s funny you would say that. One of my favorite quotes is by Grace Kelly. She said “The Emancipation of women has made them lose their mystery.” What would you say to that? I would say that is true. Because a women can be beautiful in a long long sun dress and completely clothed. It’s the essence of a woman and her aura that makes her sexy or beautiful. It’s not what she has a lack of with clothing and garments. Women make garments, garments don’t make women.

January/February 2012 ¦ MyG Magazine 26

What are your thoughts when you see everyday women’s fashion? I love to people watch. I travel all over the world and I live between Houston and New York so I get to see a lot of different fashion types as you can imagine. From one extreme to the other. So I actually draw inspiration and I like watching the everyday women’s fashion. It tells me a lot about what she’s doing or where she’s going. How she’s dressing for whatever. I like to guess where this woman may be going. Is she going to work, is she going to meet girlfriends for lunch, or is she going on a hot date? So I really enjoy watching fashion, for better of for worse, of the everyday woman. I know that you do a Miss LeRiche contest? What is that and can you tell me a little about this year’s winner? Ms. LeRiche is about our slogan Beauty, Strength, Destiny. Because we believe Beauty + Strength =Destiny. When you feel beautiful inside and out it will give you the strength to walk into your Destiny. We wanted someone that was an everyday, not a signed model to an agency to represent the face of the brand. So we searched all around the US and we were able to take it down to the six finalists, not only were they beautiful and different they also had a story that made them interesting and made them beautiful.Every girl and every women has a story and with that story they can draw inspiration and power to get to their destiny and their next level. We wanted someone to represent the brand to let women know that the everyday women is beautiful. And also someone who has a heart for the community and is in line with the social responsibility of LeRiche. That is an annual event and the winner this year is Ms. Esmeralda Ramirez Kenya. She’s not just beautiful inside and out she has brains and a very heart wrenching story. She has a blog to keep up with her and her quest being Ms. LeRiche 2011. She will be the face to the brand for the year, she is in the lookbook, she was flown to New York for fashion week, shot with one of New York’s hottest photographers to do the lookbook for LeRiche for 2011, and she will represent the brand until the next event in 2012. And we will continue to do this every year.

By keeping the ends of the hair healthy, this prevents breakage. Customarily, every four weeks, trim should be done. But if you’re trying to grow out the hair some, it can be spaced out to every eight weeks.

3. TAKE A DAILY VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT To name a few, vitamin E or B12 are excellent choices for aiding in hair growth. But there are numerous over the counter supplements that are available. If you are experiencing sudden extreme hair loss or if there are other alarming signs that are occurring, it is highly recommended that you see a physician.

4. KEEP HAIR HYDRATED Properly conditioning the hair is extremely important. Each time you wash your hair, a conditioner should follow. It is recommended to do a deep conditioning treatment at least every 2 weeks or as needed. When the hair is moisturized, this prevents less breakage and promotes strength to the cuticle.

5. EAT HEALTHY

2. KEEP A CLEAN SCALP This is extremely important, because if the scalp is not properly cleansed from impurities (which occurs from daily events, such as: sweating, use of hair products, natural oils from the scalp, also known as sebum, etc.), as a result, the hair follicle becomes clogged and the hair grows at an extremely slower rate. By washing the hair at least once per week, this will ensure a cleaner scalp and enhance its growth potential.

You know the saying, ‘You are what you eat.’ Well, it’s true. Drinking plenty water and eating large amounts of green vegetables keep the scalp hydrated and promotes healthier hair.

How Was Your Day? B y d a

Work, school, taking care of the kids, and the way the economy is right now job searching….OMG!!! When does the hustle and bustle ever end? The answer is NEVER! I think because of the current state of the economy and the general pressures of life we forget how to think positively, and I must say especially us Christians. Don’t get me wrong prayer changes things, but we must pray with knowledge, just knowing God is going to fix it is not enough he wants to see us in action..for instance you pray “Lord bless my finances” well, then start spending less in the store “you don’t need a new suit every Sunday and a pair of matching shoes”, eat out less it’s time to cook for a change or learn which ever category you fit into, put your wallet on a fast. Okay so I’m ranting a bit, but think about how you determine your day, Can your negatives actually be positive? How was your day? Every day when I get off of work I go by my grandmother’s house and she asks the question “Mina how was your day?” sometimes I say it was okay, good, bad, or just ehhh. Most of the time before I can even respond to the question she would already begin answering for me “you had a good day” she says “you went a whole day and you’re home it was a good day” after she finishes speaking for me I ask why does she ask me how my day was if she was going to answer for me? She just laughs and says “grandma is just grandma”. I never thought about her rational until I started writing this article. We are asked this very question every day and we reply: good,

L k

As

31 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

because things went our way, we received a good grade on an exam, the professor cancelled class or maybe we got a substitute, we reply good because the boss called out sick. We reply “it was okay” because you had a boring seminar to attend, it was okay because the teacher made you get into groups and you got stuck with the dumbest kid and the laziest kid in class, and they are not the same person, “it was okay” because the kids decided I want to draw mommy a picture, and drew it on your white walls. We reply “ehh”, just because some things are just better left unsaid. Last but not least we reply bad, because just when you thought you were early for work, you get onto the expressway and hit bumper to bumper traffic, you finally get to work/school, and can’t find parking, not to mention you missed your meeting/test. O but your “luck” doesn’t end there, at lunch mustard gets on your clothes, and your presentation is in 15min… Okay so maybe I’m over exaggerating this story a bit, but you get the point, it’s Not! a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Let’s look back to grandma’s point, no matter what day it was good, ehh, or bad you still had a good day. We often think too much about the things directly in front of us when we should be looking at the very beginning which is the gift of life. Did you wake up this morning? If your reading this article I’m pretty sure this applies to you , did you make it to work and back home safe? Sometimes we tend to forget the obvious because in the back of our mind it’s supposed to happen this way, go to work/school come home and the day is over.

However, not everyone’s fate is the same, we don’t all make it home safe, not everyone has a job or the ability to go to school. Just look at how blessed you are if you have a job or come home safely every night. Why is it that we dwell on the negative so much? The saying says “The good always outweighs the bad”, but when you think about it theoretically, in our everyday lives we tend to drench ourselves in everything that went wrong and how it could have been better if… Is it really that hard to think about the positive of a bad situation? Norman Vincent Peale author of The Power of Positive Thinking coined a very effective formula:

(Stop stressing ladies lets hold on to our youth as long as we possibly can ). So you had a bad day, as long as you made it through, as long as you have prayerized, picturized, believe and it will actualize. The good always outweighs the bad! A Lesson from grandma so...

1. Prayerize 2. Picturize 3. Actualize 1. Talk to God about your day as if he was sitting next to you, ask him for clarity, understanding and strength in a situation, 2. See yourself overcoming in that problem, if it’s a test see yourself passing, if you can’t see it happening then why would you pass (but please don’t forget to study, Always remember Faith without works is DEAD!) 3. The picture comes into existence, In Philippians 4:11 Paul says to the church “for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, there with to be content” whew… I wonder if Paul would say that living during our time. Grandma, Norman, and Paul have a point, there is no good in dwelling on the bad all it does is cause worry, which causes health problems, and wrinkles before its time

Being a big fan of Donald Lawrence and Tri-City when they decided to part ways, I wondered well how do I get my music fix? Well... Ms. LeJuene Thompson stepped right into my void and her sophomore album and upcoming music has me on a mega high.

Hawkins early stuff, Andre Crouch, and the first album I ever owned myself was a record someone bought for me Vanessa Bell. So I would have to say the Hawkins and Vanessa Bell, but I have a long list of others as well.

When did you first begin to sing? Actually my mom told me I started talking at about nine months and then singing shortly after that, somewhere between six months and a year. But in church I started around 11 or 12 years old. And I don’t know if you are familiar with Pastor Nancy Wilson? But her son, my best friend, and her daughter we were in a group and she had a local show. We appeared on her show first and after that I started singing in church. Who are some of your favorite singers that inspired you growing up? I think the first album that I really realized that I wanted to do gospel music was the Hawkins. My mother was very, very, very musical and she had all the current records and they were records then. She had titles like the look alives, all the

Why did you decide to sing gospel music? Well I grew up in the church and prophetically my mother’s pastor at the time, I think I was five years old, she prophesied to my mother and said that she’s going to record albums and sing all over the world and all this other stuff I never thought in my wildest dreams. At one point I strayed away a little bit but when I finally got it together and realized that this is what I am supposed to be and what God has called me to do, I love it and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I always say scriptures are the greatest inspiration, what is your favorite scripture that most describes your music? O my music, wow. That’s a hard one. You know there are a couple but my favorite one that I meditate on everyday, or three or four times a day, is the “Now faith...” scripture in Hebrews 11:1. Far as my music is concerned I hope that I portray that faith walk. Even though it is difficult or bad right now keep hope on what God has promised and let your faith be activated.

One of my favorite songs on your latest album is Ooh La La. What inspired you to write that song and what is your favorite song on the album? Well I am married to Cedric Thompson, whoo-hoo! You know I have to be his cheerleader. He was in the studio just playing around, playing some music, and I was like, I like that, the beat is cool, nice, and easy. And I started singing along and I told him you know what I feel like you’re saying to God, God I just love you. I’m not asking for anything and I’m not putting a long list before you. I just want to tell the world that I love you. And Ooh La La, we just came up with Ooh La La, which means I love you. And I get some flack, some radio stations ask me who are you talking about? I am definitely talking about the Lord. Because you know a lot of times when we don’t deserve his love, when we do stuff that he tells us not to do and do things that are out of his will. He still loves us and I just wanted to say to him Lord I love you for loving me in spite of me. We just wanted to tell God, we love you Lord in a way that everybody can understand. Like people who don’t go to church they still love the Lord but they just haven’t made that decision to go to church. We make no mistake about who we are talking about.

January/February 2012 ¦ MyG Magazine 36

And as far as my favorite song on the album, it changes, sometimes week to week. Currently my favorite song is ‘This too Will Pass.” I have had a lot of trials lately and my faith has definitely been tried but knowing God as I know him, I know this too shall pass. Why Metamorphosis for your title? When we recorded the album I was going through a whole lot, my father died, things with my family, going from a major label to trying to do it independently. Just a whole lot of little things and and I just felt like God was telling me okay it’s time for you to transition it’s time for you to morph into what I want you to be. And I was having a conversation with my very dear friend, Paula Champion, about butterflies and their life stages and life span, and the transition of the butterfly. Like how they go into their cocoon and they are alone and I went through stages when I was alone. And I was like wow it’s so spiritual. And I felt like God was speaking to me in the different stages of a butterfly and because of that we named it Metamorphosis. What would you say is the importance of God in your life? O my goodness, If I did not have him and in the risk of being

cliche-ish I don’t know where I would be right now. God is everything to me. Every morning I wake up I have to speak to him when I lay down I have to speak to him, several times during the day I have to talk to him. I can’t do anything without him and I understand that if God doesn’t work this mechanism in me, nothing is right for me, nothing, nothing works out; so I have to totally depend on him, so he’s like my everything I don’t know how I could function without him. If you could choose one person to do a dynamic duo with? Who would it be and why? Why do I have to narrow it down to one person. (laughs) That is so funny because I have a wishlist, I’m working on an album now and I have about ten people and my sister was like you must be outta your mind! Oh, my goodness can I do two people? Okay John P. Kee and Donald Lawrence and I picked those two because they have been so instrumental in pushing me to where I am supposed to be. They are like my life coaches, spiritual coaches, brothers, and sometimes like my dad. They have really helped propel me to where I am supposed to be and they pushed me along to where I am in my life.

37 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

Can you tell me some of the others on your wish-list I am intrigued? Right now I really would love to work with Ledisi. There’s something about her that I love, I love her spirit. Someone turned me on to her and I think I watched her Christmas special last year. And I just love Ledisi, she’s one of my top five. Could you give me one fun fact about you? One fun fact? I am probably the most girly tomboy you will meet. (laughs) I will be outside with lashes on trying to plant something or running with my boys. So I am probably the most girly tomboy you will ever meet.

Be About Christ Series Dr. Kelvin and Sister Michelle Wiley are a powerhouse couple who love working with young people. Dr. Wiley was one of the former Congress President’s of the Church Of Our Lord (COOLJC), an organization that brings together thousands of young people from around the world and he has also been featured on the 700 club for his treatment of a patient with an amazing miracle. Sister Wiley has worked with the youth as well presiding over some of the workshops at the Congress and spearheading the youth ministry at Greater Refuge Temple Jacksonville. Together these two have touched the lives of many young people and they are eager to ask either of them for advice. We are so happy to have this power couple give us some words to live by, in the “Be About Christ” Series. “Be About Christ” Series is a section where they ask hard hitting question about your quest to do God’s will. They ask that you challenge and evaluate yourself truthfully in order to better yourself. They are going to ask you a question and give you the tools to effectively rate how you are affected by this question. Their goal is to have you really think about what you are doing for God and how you can improve in order to get closer and closer the the Father.

Once again it gives us great pleasure to give words of encouragement to your readers. In times of turmoil and devastation it's good to know you can still be positive and uplifting because the God that lives in us, provides strength. Many times we get so involved in the problem until we forget that we have the problem solver on the inside. It is said that the calmest part of a tornado 41 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

is right in the center the vortex. Dust and debris flies around--it picks up houses, trees, cars and telephone poles but directly in the middle the sun is shining. No wind blowing. It's just peaceful. That's how we as Christians should look at life. Sometimes we are in the middle of our storm and all Hell is breaking loose around us, but God has us right in the center holding us up. He wants us to trust him!

“Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14 KJV) So many times we say we trust, we believe and we have faith; but when the storm comes, we begin to doubt. There was a man who brought his son, which had a dumb spirit, to Jesus. Wherever they went, he hurt himself, foamed at the mouth, and gnasheth with his teeth. He threw himself in the fire and in the waters to kill himself. The man told Jesus, I spake to your disciples that they should cast the evil spirit out of him; and they could not. Jesus answered him, and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him unto me. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. (Mark 9:17- 24 KJV) This story lets us know that we as Christians believe to some degree. But because of the length of the situation or how dire it seems, we begin to doubt. We let unbelief creep in and cause us

to doubt God--even though he's brought us out of trouble many times before. He only wants us to believe that with Him all things are possible. Yes, sometimes, life is rough! However, "if mountains were smooth we would not be able to climb them". So all we need to do is ask the Lord not to move the mountain but Please give us the strength to climb it. And while we are climbing and renewing our faith in God, he will be fixing the situation and causing it to work out in our favor! So hold your head up and be encouraged because we are more than conqueror! Why? Because we BELIEVE!!! Continue to pray, fast and read your Bible. Trust that God has it all in control. The most important thing is to keep the faith and Believe, Believe, Believe!

CHIVALRY, IS IT DEAD? If you ask many, they’d tell you chivalry has been dead for quite some time now. If you ask me, I say chivalry is only dead to the man who can’t define it. In other words, chivalry is rarely taught in this day and age, and so it does indeed appear to be dead because many men don’t know what chivalry is. Hey, a lot of people don’t personally know who Christ is either, but He’s more alive than any living person or thing on earth. In fact, if you’re looking for chivalry at it’s best, you may want to look for it in a man who really loves Christ. When you think chivalry, you think courtesy, generosity, and valor. You think GENTLEMAN. What better man to find these traits in, than in a man who shapes himself after the most loving, and courageous man to ever live? A man who patterns himself after Christ, is a man who wants to be right, not for the sake of a woman or another man, but for the sake of his soul and his love for his Savior. It becomes a reflection in the way he speaks, the things he does, and even the way he dresses. He speaks with a humble and meek nature, wanting nothing more than to help you gain access to the same love he has obtained. Sound like chivalry? Sound like this could be a gentleman? Of coarse. This man will hold doors, greet a woman with respect, give without looking for return, and fight for what’s right. SO WHERE DO YOU FIND THIS GUY? WHERE DOES CHIVALRY LIVE? Being a gentleman isn’t exactly what the media is pumping into society as something appealing, so we see a lot of the opposite, but that hasn’t killed chivalry. The majority going left makes going right a rare find, but a special find. The catch is, you can’t always find it with your eyes. Chivalry lives in the soul of a man. How do you 45 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

find the soul of a man? With prayer. What better way to learn of a man than to ask the One who made him? No, I’m not saying go get a in quiet space and start praying for the Lord to send you a chivalrous individual. The prayer should be asking for better insight on who you are. The more you learn to love your Maker, the more you learn to love yourself. The more you love yourself, the better you can identify with others who obtain the same type of love. A chivalrous man possesses certain morals and principles that only others who possess the same, can identify with as being beneficial to their well-being. When you lack these things in self, it not only becomes hard to find in others, but you leave yourself open to fall for what appears to be right, but isn’t what it appears to be. We’re all familiar with the situation where a man and woman meet, and put their best foot forward until they get comfortable and, out of nowhere, disaster strikes. Yeah, that happens often when looking for that chivalrous man with your eyes. Anyone can pretend to be nice, and likeable for a period of time, but chivalry is a way of life. It defines a gentleman. He can’t be mistaken for anything else because everything else simply doesn’t fit him. When the typical guy says nice things trying to impress a woman, it may sound nice. She may smile and even feel good about it, but somewhere in the back of her mind she’s always questioning why he’s so nice, or if what he’s saying is really true. When a chivalrous man is just being himself, people take special notice to his actions and words because he doesn’t appear to notice he’s being nice. Chivalry is his nature, he’s just being himself, a gentleman. YOU WANT CHIVALRY? Look within yourself, always keeping in mind You attract what you are. Chivalry lives on. -JERMAINE GREEN

We asked the wonderful ladies of Women Listen for their take on

Chivalry. Here’s

what they had to say!

Stacey J I can remember as a little girl watching men race to the door to open it for women--at church or the groce r y s tore . I c an dis t inc t ly remember watching my uncles grab my bags when I came home from college. I don't see much of that any more. Can I say that it's all lost? No. Ev e n t o d ay a s I am s l o w l y approaching 40 when I go home my uncles are still reaching for my bags. I believe that what is modeled before a generation tends to be repeated. Perhaps if we get back to modeling, we will see more young men "reach for the bags". January/February 2012 ¦ MyG Magazine 46

Chivalry - Is it dead? In my opinion, chivalry isn't dead...yet. It's more like, lying in a coma...needing to be revived! I think there are a few reasons for this. Mainly, the generation gap. I think you'll find most older guys prone to be chivalrous, whereas most young men just don't know any better because they really haven't had proper examples. Then, there are some men who have been turned off by today's "independent woman". They are of the mindset that, "well, if she's so independent, I don't need to open her door, or pull out her chair, or pay for a meal", so they don't do any of those things. There is a saying that states, "people will treat you the way you allow them to treat you". In order to revive the practice of chivalry, I think we as women need to remind and show men how we are to be treated. Also, we need to let men be men. Sometimes, we get so accustomed to doing things for ourselves that we tend to forget OR not allow the man to be the man. Chivalry can only die if we choose to "pull the plug". Let's make a better effort to recognize the roles we as women play and allow for a speedy recovery of chivalry! ;) 47 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

Do you think chivalry is dead?

Absolutely not. Through everyday people, chivalry lives. Should the guy always pay on a date?

No! The key word is "always." The first few dates are acceptable for a gentleman to cover, then a lady should prepare to offer. A lady can begin by offering to cover the tip, then offering to cover her own way, lastly offering to pay for the date as a whole. A general rule of thumb is that the person who suggests the date, pays for the date - though a gentleman should always cover the first date. With a society of selfproclaimed independent women who demand and deserve equal treatment, it's time they are treated equally. Chivalry is for ladies too. What is your definition of a “Gold Digger”?

A person (man or woman) whose only or main interest in another is solely based off of what can be provided to them financially. Golddiggers are often deceiving and fake an interest in someone for the sole purpose of money extraction. A gold-digger isn't to be confused with a groupie, though their intent is similar. All gold-diggers should shift their focus on being goal-diggers. What do women do or don’t do that turns a man off ?

Awful breath is always unacceptable, any form of possessiveness (unless it's slavery, you can't own a human-being), a desperate cry for attention is tasteless - beauty is effortless, downtalking the male gender is tragic - to say all men are dogs is to say God lacks creativity. 51 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

“It’s sexier when that dress almost shows what’s underneath but let’s my imagination work.” Is it always the guys job to be romantic?

No. I'll say it again: Chivalry is for ladies too. What do you find that most men are looking for in a woman?

Compatibility. To be able to look at a woman who takes care of her appearance, is intelligent, confident yet humble, and simply appeals to the human senses is simply priceless. Do men have a list like women?

I'd hope not. I feel we're more simple. We like what's attractive (physically/mentally) and that's it. I'd advise anyone with a checklist to make sure they match their own list ... otherwise, put the pen down. D o yo u t h i n k G o d i s i m p o rt a n t i n relationships?

I don't think it's important, I KNOW it's important! Attempting to build a relationship without God as the foundation is attempting to build an apartment complex in the middle of the ocean. Good luck. In the church we as women are taught “He that findeth a wife findeth a good thing”. What is your take on this?

I couldn't agree more. Marriage isn't for everybody, but for those who find it ... bask in it!

What’s your favorite color? O wow. Umm Wow. Do I have one? Favorite color? Gee Wiz. I trying to think see in terms of clothing I try to wear black but in the terms of accessories I try to wear white or something. I don’t know. Let’s say white, I guess. Well maybe let’s say all black ,all black everything. I’m indecisive, see I’m not asked that question frequently so I don’t even know. Favorite Candy? Can I give three? Whatumacallit, a Reeses, and Twizzlers. Coffee or Tea? Tea. Homemade. Green tea. I just had some about two hours sago. Stripes or Polka dots? Stripes. Umm. Stripes. Favorite Shoe (Brand)? Well my favorite shoe that I have is a Gucci, because they are very comfortable. The loafers and boat shoes. Tie or No Tie? Depends. It depends on the circumstance. Tie or No Tie? It really depends. Let’s say untied tie. If you had a choice between a dog, a cat, or a fish? Which would you get? Dog. Dog all day. If you could have only two books which would they be and why? The Bible and Bereolaesque. The Bible because it’s the guide book of life in general. It‘s often looked over. Every Christian knows how

important it is, but we don’t always run to it. But in terms of need, if just for survival period, it’s like a survival guide. The conversations, the stories, the proverbs, the lessons, the guidelines in that book are essential to living. And Bereolaesque, because I mean I read that book sometimes, though I am the author of it, it’s different principles in it in which I have to be reminded as well. I’m not perfect so just to brush up on things I read the book as well. And I think it’s a sexy book, I mean it looks good. Just the cover alone, I enjoy it. It makes the coffee table look good, it makes the environment that you are traveling in look good, if you are on an airplane it makes you look good. So I would definitely say the Bible and Bereolaesque. If you could have one person dead or alive, to spend one day with you and devote their full attention to you, who would it be and why? Well... This is already the case but I would like for it to continue to be the case, let’s say Jesus Christ. As cliché as that may sound, he is with me everyday. And I wouldn’t want time without him, time without him in my opinion is hell. Life without God is like death or hell. So I would want to spend my time with Jesus. It’s what I do anyway I wouldn’t want that taken away. Check out Mr. Bereola’s bestseller. Bereolaesque: The Contemporary Gentleman and the Etiquette Book for the Unknown Sophisticate At Amazon.com

Erica Hubbard Though she is in the upcoming star studded film “Dysfunctional Family” from my time spent with Erica Hubbard it proved that she was less dysfunctional and more bubbly not too far from her character, Kita, on “Let’s Stay Together”. This down to earth celebrity who answers the question if she could only ask God one question, it would be to make sure that she doing the right thing to get into heaven, recently sat down with MyG to chat about what she’s been up to as she awaits the second season of “Let’s Stay Together” and continues her philanthropic tours to encourage and give advice to young people around the world through the Erica Hubbard Foundation. What do you do remain positive? One word. P-R-A-Y. Pray. I do it all the time. I have to wakeup with a praying spirit because that gets you through the day. Because with the recession, the housing market, and the new laws you gonna run into somebody, maybe in the grocery store, that may not be feeling as positive as you do and you can give them an encouraging word if your spirit is already there. By doing that, that can make their day. It really can. And you need it. It’s like a daily dose of medicine to me. That’s how I do it. Pray. You have to have that relationship daily otherwise I think you’ll fall victim to some of the stuff that happens in society now. How would you say prayer has factored into your accomplishments? Oooo... I was just talking about this with someone before I called. I don’t want to say it’s just me praying I believe that you have to have a community of prayer warriors around you. That helps uplift your spirit as well. I feel very fortunate that my best friend is a minister and my mom just became an ordained minister like a week ago. I have a lot of people around me that pray for me and pray with me. It’s a team effort of prayer warriors that help you get through the day. I live in LA, but it feels good when you are raised with people that are prayer warriors and you can call on them. Just to get through the industry I fly my mom out to pray with me, I fly my best-friend out, I fly my sister out whose a prayer warrior. I do that so often I can’t begin to tell you how much it helps me and I know it helps me. I’ll just be like ok I need you in a week, I’m gonna get on the internet and I’m gonna book a flight for you. ‘Does that work with your schedule? Ok, great!’ I had this one job that lasted for 3 months every single week I had somebody out there with me praying. That’s your support team and you always need those people around you because they are going to uplift you, they’re going to edify, they’re going to encourage you. You have people around you that are envious and jealous and you need those other people around you to say ‘you know what you’re good.’ Instead of playing around with men and what people think and say about you, you’re in a relationship with God. 55 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

How important is it for the people in your life to have a relationship with God? What about your spouse? It’s vital. It’s vital that your significant other has a relationship with God. I’m not saying there are not going to be things that are going to turn you off, but with God in the situation that is something that can turn you on. Do you think chivalry is dead? If so, who do you think killed it and how can we revive it? Umm...I think there’s a song out there like that. I think Cee-Lo has that song, I believe he says it’s not dead. Do I think it’s dead...well I think it’s half and half, 50-50. Now should I start with the good 50 or the bad 50? The good 50, you have to go to certain environments to find those who walk in that and practice that. The people that don’t have it, you are in the wrong place, the wrong room. There are some people that call me and they ask ‘How do you find a good man?’ And I say ‘where are you hanging out?’ And they tell me and I say ‘that’s the problem.’ You’re not gonna find him in the club after a couple of drinks. You’re gonna get exactly the intoxicated look, the ones you think are cute for the moment. You have to go in certain places. After I graduated from Columbia College in Chicago and even throughout college I would like to go to different galas and banquets with the guys who like to dress up and have decent conversation and I’d started doing this when I was 18. I said you know what that’s the room where you will find that.

So what do I think killed it [chivalry]. A lot of stuff people watch on TV. Or what they think a cool guy does in a relationship and it’s not really what a cool guy does, you’re being a jerk. Those guys tend to abuse women and not just physical abuse, but verbal abuse. ‘You’re not this... You ain’t gonna be that... You don’t look like her...’ Anytime a guy is saying those ain’ts to you and there are too many negatives in the relationship that’s a warning. Like he has issues and he’s putting that off on you and he’s just saying that to make himself feel like he’s building himself up, to tear somebody else down. That goes for dating, family members, and girlfriends if they say ‘uhh girl you don’t look like this and you ain’t this...’ C’mon! You are not good for my spirit you are draining me. Anytime someone has your best interest in mind they are going to say positive stuff to you, they are going to reaffirm you. I understand. I say find the happy in your life! That’s exactly right! Find the happy in your life! And I have a non-profit that I created where I go to different schools, youth groups, community centers, to talk to kids about low self-esteem and confidence issues, because a lot of them are dealing with their peers that talk like that [negative]. I am telling them that your association means everything, your support group, they can be the downfall of your life if they are not sowing the right things in their and your life. And if your hanging out with someone that’s doing bad thing, that’s going to eventually rub off on you. It’s like you’re condoning their bad behavior and you think it’s cute now but you’ll look up five/ten/fifteen years from now saying ‘What did I do with my life? Who was I around? Who pulled/dragged me down?’

“When you start to edify yourself you change others lives!” January/February 2012 ¦ MyG Magazine 56

Speaking of your foundation, what made you want to start the Erica Hubbard Foundation? Well, I grew up in what they call a more at risk community but it’s just a neighborhood full of poverty. In those types of neighborhoods there are people around you doing all kinds of stuff, selling drugs, etc. And I was around so much negativity that when I grew up I was like if a kid has to go through that I want to show them how to go through it. Even if you’re going through it physically you don’t have to go through it mentally. Just because you’re in that environment doesn’t mean you have to become apart of that environment and say this is as good as it gets, this is my life, this is how my family is so this is how I am going to be. No, that’s the wrong thinking. So I tell the kids that even though I was in that type of society, I would always think positive. So you reinforce the things that are good that you want to happen for your life even in the midst of negativity. When you have family members doing bad things or bad friends friends doing bad things, think I’m better than this. And if I can get a child to think like that even in a bad situation, it could change their life. Literally what you say you are is what happens to you. There’s life and death in the tongue. I always said I’m going to have a non-profit and encourage kids. Boom! It happens! I’m going to be a series regular. Boom! It happens! I’m going to be in a film studio. Boom! It happens! I’m going to own my own home. Boom! It happens! I’m going to have a husband that’s great, who loves God. Boom! It happens! You know what I love too, vision boards. I always tell the kids do vision boards, put every goal they want to accomplish on their vision board, write it out or cut it out and paste it on your vision board and look at it daily. The kids need it out here, they need it bad. I wish more people had non-profits, that helped kids in these communities. When you start to edify yourself you change others lives! 57 MyG Magazine ¦ January/February 2012

Why do you choose the roles you choose? Great work is not just being in any kind of projects. The projects that I pick I think have had an impact on kids, because they are positive roles. I think if you’re doing these roles that are not so positive and they don’t have a message and your character is doing whatever in the movie or the television show then you are not a good role model. What message are you sending out to the kids? I think my projects have a an impact on the community because they’re characters with great messages. I like to hand-pick roles that can teach somebody and people say o, your character did this and I liked it instead of somebody coming up to you asking why did your character do this? And it’s like uh-oh. I have had scripts come to and I say no, I’m not going to do it. I don’t care how big the project is I will turn them down because it’s not a good message for our community. So what is it about your latest character, Kita “Let’s Stay Together”? I think she has an impact on the community because she’s self sufficient. She has her own place, a good job, and she gives advice. She’s so outspoken. People listen to her, her brother listens to her, her sister-in-law asks for advice. And even though she has this claim that she is outspoken and vocal people listen to her because she has her life in order. “Let’s Stay Together” has been renewed for a second season. Congratulations! What can we expect from Kita in the second season? Well you are going to get the vocal, outspoken, confident Kita. She’s looking for a love interest and you get to see who she hand picks and why. All her expectations have to be met.

Ok, so she has a checklist? Yes, she most definitely has a checklist of what she expects in a significant other. Did you, yourself have a checklist before you met your husband? At that point yea, because I had dated and I had the don’ts, the d-dd-don’ts, he stuff you don’t want in a relationship. So when I met him I knew what I wanted in a relationship and he met all those expectations. I think you have to have a checklist because if you don’t you’ll fall for any type of guy. You have to have standards. You have to be a little guarded with your life. You have have to be a little guarded with your emotions and whatnot. Otherwise you’ll be one of those girls crying one day that this guy did this to you and he did that, but you saw that in him when you first started talking to him. So, what do you expect? What do you end up with? So you have to have standards.

Can you give me one of your favorite moments with the cast? Ooo... My favorite moments with the cast. I definitely have to say one of my favorite moments was meeting Queen Latifah. I really looked up to her, her talent, and I think she is brilliant because she is like the ultimate business woman. When I met Lereatha who’s over at BET and Debra Lee, I was even more excited because to see women running a television network and television shows. That means so much to me as a woman, they ‘re making huge strides and leaving legacies in the entertainment industry. The creator of the show, Jacque Edmonds Cofer. She came up with this concept about love, romance, and being together, and making it work. I think we need more positive messages out there. Can you tell her thank you for me, because I love the show! (laughs) OK. I will! What are some of your favorite Christian artists? Donald Lawrence, Fred Hammond, Shekinah Glory I listen to them a lot. I have to say my cousin, Neana Hamer. She’ll call and she’ll sing on my voicemail and oooo minister to me in song. I keep telling her that when she sings, it touches people so much until they start tearing.

Who are actresses you have worked with or would like to work with who are positive influences for you? I love me some Angela Bassett. O, my goodness that’s who I was going to say. I say that on every interview because she is most definitely a positive role model. I love her! She is really a down to earth, genuine, loving person. She is not one of those people that are unapproachable in Hollywood. She’ll talk to you and she is sincere about it, some of the actors and actresses are not sincere, they’ll say hi and they are self-absorbed. Every single accomplishment she has, she deserves, she is s good person. Do you have any directors or male actors that have had this same affect on you? Yes. I’m going to say Kevin Hook. He’s a director, producer and a long list of everything else. He’s a

really good person in Hollywood that I met, right before I started Lincoln Heights. Kevin Hook has made an impact on my career and Laurence Fishborne. Just to be around so many talented people I feel so grateful. So what’s next for Erica Hubbard? I did this gospel play that aired on the gospel music channel it’s aired a few times and now it’s going to DVD. I felt so happy to work on that project. That piece of work was so explosive, people were telling me ‘I love this part I love that part!’ That project was “The Ideal Husband”. I was also grateful to work on this project called funny or die. I work with Jackee Harry from 227. The project is called “Nurse Jackie”, directed by Will Ferrell.

OK

, so everything in life is not perfect. Gas

prices are extremely high and are on the rise, tuition is annually increasing, It seems that nothing is going right. Well even in the midst of all the negative things going on there are some things that are positive and Apostle William L. Bonner tells us that is what we should focus on. Thinking on those negative things doesn’t benefit you at all. It just keeps you sad and at the bottom of the pile because you can’t think of anything but what is going wrong with your life. And while your mind is focused on the gloom there is no room or time for your mind to figure out how to get out of the bad situation. There is more to life than the things that go wrong and the cloudy days. God said he won’t put more on you than you can bear. Take that and know that he is not going to leave you in this dark spot. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our pity parties and our dark days that when he has given us happy things we don’t even realize it. Think about the flowers that grow all around you. Think about the smiling faces that pass by you. Think about the fact that God let the sun shine. UNCF says “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” So don’t waste space in your mind on negativity. Think that you can get that new promotion and it’s yours. Think that you can get that

contract and you’ll be signing it. Think that you can be a doctor and you’ll be the Chief of surgery. It’s all in how you think. Think positively and as the book of Apostle Bonner’s so wonderfully titles it it will change your life. So change your life with Pastor Bonner’s Book. School & Studying: The Dynamic Duo Objective As the school year kicks off so do most student’s high expectations for the coming year: they will make better grades, study more often, and make better decisions in order to follow their dreams. After the first month this ideal behavior falls between the cracks and old habits set in. Why is it that studying is so difficult? Why can’t you better manage your time? Sure, you have time for the newest season of Glee or Jersey Shore, but what about that book report for Language Arts class or those 40 problems for Algebra? The answer: inadequate study skills. As the new school year approaches, think about your past studying habits and follow these simple tips below… maybe you will find studying to be worth more of your time once you see the grade and knowledge-improving results.

Procedures 1. Time-Management. The classic case of time mis-management. We all suffer from it. From television shows to athletic events, when there is something on our agenda that seems more interesting than studying we are naturally drawn to that item… even if it is cleaning the house or another chore. Procrastination can set in early in the school year, so be sure to be aware of your time to reinforce positive study skills early in the year.

2. Determine your concentration span. This is where many of us fall short. We sit in front of our books and homework but start “zoning out” before we are finished with the first page. Just like a shoe size or a favorite food, we all have different attention spans. It is important to determine your own so that you can make the most of your time. Try the following: go to your regular study environment (at the kitchen table, in the library, etc.) and sit down with a book all about your least favorite topic. Though this seems counterintuitive, it is important to choose something you dislike with a passion. Make an effort to actually try to learn and recall the information. Make note of the time your mind starts to wander, even if for a little bit. The time in between your start and your first loss of concentration equates to your minimum concentration span. Repeat the exercise with a book on your favorite topic. The time in between your start and your first loss of concentration here equates to your maximum concentration span. Use this information when planning out your study schedule by allowing yourself breaks for the most effective use of study time.

3. Pay attention in class. No matter how boring that history lecture may be, the best key to passing that test will always come from the teacher. Writing a note to a friend, surfing the internet, or continuously drifting off to sleep will not help you when test-time comes around. However, the teacher will. Teachers will tell you what is on the test: whether they point out the exact items or whether they tell you to just “study the chapter,” teachers are there to help you. Believe me, they want you to succeed. Even though they may seem “unreasonable” or “unfair” at times, they want you to be a successful student. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t have such high expectations for you!

Your Beatitude I learned that while I had goals for myself and very high expectations, I still dwelled on the negative too much. Too many times I let my mind linger too long on what could go wrong or what was not going right. That negativity was holding me back. I was sabotaging myself before anyone else even had the chance to. I couldn’t understand why it seemed as if things were going great on minute and sour the next. It was do to my negativity and well also my lack of consulting God on my decisions to move forward. I found that the more I neglected God because I was too busy or too tired the more negative I became, the harder it was to be positive. Every time I pushed into a new endeavor I had to work overtime not to dwell on the things that went wrong and not to give up
