Four Ways to Create a More Biblically Engaged Children’s Ministry Mark Entzminger as told to Renée Grantham If you were to interview most children’s leaders across the United States if they are engaging children in Scripture, I imagine that 100 percent of them are. You’d have to look pretty hard to find someone who has assumed the responsibility of teaching children without using the Bible as the foundation of their teaching. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do better. You may be tempted to discredit these practices for being so simple. My hunch is that most of these tips are not being implemented in a consistent and intentional way.
1.Study the Word. So simple, right? Let me explain. I have a feeling that in the rush of life, leaders study the lesson or review a key verse in preparation for the week. This is a good start . . . but it is only a start. What do you think the Holy Spirit might reveal to you if on Monday you read the entire passage of the Bible story
4
from the curriculum? What could you discover if you pondered the realities surrounding that specific time all week long? Start with reading the lesson multiple times throughout the week. Let it speak to you until you can speak its truth to others with a fresh revelation from God.
Discipleship Ideas · Fall 2020
2.Connect the Stories. Sometimes the stories of the Bible can appear disconnected from each other. Most curricula for children jump from topic to topic without really telling the full story of who God is. Think of it this way: The Bible is one continuous story of God’s love for His creation and how people’s decisions to go their own ways caused separation in their relationship with God. As a result, people have been trying to find a way to make it right on their own. Jesus became the way to full restoration of people’s relationship with the Heavenly Father. With this continuous story in mind, each week kids are discovering something new about God. They are also connecting one part of God’s story to the next. When you think of it this way, it doesn’t make sense to teach the Bible any other way until people grasp the full story of God and our relationship with Him.
3. Help Kids Locate the Scriptures. In today’s children’s ministries, most children don’t need to bring their Bible because the Scripture verses are on the screen. Even if kids do bring their Bibles, they are rarely taught how to open the sixty-six books and find where the teaching is coming from. What if, as children arrived, leaders helped them find the biblical book that the lesson is from that morning? During service, be sure to read the story from the Bible to allow children a chance to read along with you in their own Bible. Older kids may even be encouraged to highlight key verses and take notes on the lesson. Or, as children end their service, leaders could help them find the Bible story for next week. Leaders could encourage them to read the Bible story at home and come back with their questions. It’s a great way to challenge the curious or the overachievers to engage with Scripture on their own.
4. Commit the Bible to Memory. I’m afraid some churches have lost the art of challenging children to memorize Scripture. In our appeal to help children remember one main point, we’ve become satisfied with reading a key verse but not really helping children memorize it. This must not be overlooked. A child who memorizes Bible verses can more easily recall those verses later in life than those who don’t. Here are five memorization tips:
1 2 3 4 5
Ask the Leaders to Memorize: Find creative ways to encourage everyone to memorize Scripture, and don’t let the leaders off the hook! You go first. Be the first to have the verse memorized. Put the Words to Music: For example, JumpStart3 does a great job of putting entire Bible verses to music that kids love. In time, you’ll begin to hear the kids singing along with the music, and all you did was press “play.” Explain the Verse: When kids understand what the verses mean, they’ll be more likely to commit the verses to memory. Use simple illustrations to unpack abstract principles. Implement Memorization Activities: Once you pick up a few games kids love, repeat them throughout the year using different verses. Repetition is key. Include Facts about the Bible: In the midst of memorizing Scripture, don’t miss the importance of learning the facts about the Bible. These help kids not only know the Word, but also begin to understand why it is so special for us today. The Bible Fact-Pak Question Cards and Junior Bible Quiz are two great tools to help you do this. Learn more at nationaljbq.org.
Yes, these are simple tips to engage kids in God’s Word, but if you’ve not been using them, starting all at once may be a bit overwhelming. Why not choose one or two of these ideas to get started? In time you’ll begin to see children, leaders, and even entire families being impacted by the power of the Bible.

Say: The Bible is the most amazing book you will ever read. While it is a collection of many smaller books, it is a unified story of God’s love for His people. This quarter provides an overview of both the Old and New Testaments that will serve as a foundation for the quarters to follow. (Play the Unit 1 introduction video, available at RadiantLifeCurriculum.com/Adult.)
Opening Activity—Quick Bible Facts Ask your students to name as many facts about the Bible as they can in the next two minutes Write their responses on the board. You may hear the following: The Bible contains sixty-six books total; thirty- nine Old Testament books; twenty-seven New Testament books; written by more than forty people over approximately 1,600 years; longest chapter is Psalm 119; shortest chapter is Psalm 117; shortest verse is John 11:35; the Bible includes Law, history, poetry, prophets, Gospels, and Epistles. The Bible is the best-selling book of all time, and it takes about seventy-five hours to read. Did you know there is a great study Bible that is distinctively Pentecostal? Say: In today’s lesson, we begin a journey through the Old Testament, covering highlights from the Book of Genesis. This unit is not a thorough survey of the Old Testament, but an overview the story of the plan of God from the beginning until the time of the Messiah. (Share your highlights from the following text.) The Bible was written by more than forty people over about 1,600 years. Yet within its diversity is unity of theme and purpose. This lesson is the beginning of a “flyover” view of the entire Bible. During these thirteen weeks, we will hit the main points of the Old and New Testaments. You will see the underlying message of the whole of Scripture: the message that God loves you and has paid the ultimate price to save you from your sins. That price was the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.
week. You can encourage students to try at least one of these and watch for ways God will meet them as they practice what they’ve learned. In the interest of minimizing the items your class will need, the Radiant Life Student Guide will now come in one version featuring easy-to-read comfort print, rather than separate regular and large print versions. This also allows slightly larger margins for students to take notes as you study.
Multimedia Features Creating an engaging classroom experience that appeals to all learning styles is easier than ever thanks to new visual elements. PowerPoint® presentations provide a clear structure for the lesson that all students can follow along as the teacher moves through it. Some lessons also include a link to a helpful video to introduce the unit or to enhance the lesson. Unit introduction videos make it easy to jump from Sunday to Sunday without requiring you to draw connections between the lessons. This is especially helpful in overview quarters where a broad scope of material is covered.
Opening Activity—Quick Bible Facts

The word “genesis” is most easily defined as “beginning.” So it is appropriate that the Book of Genesis forms the starting point for what follows throughout the Old and New Testaments. Many of the great doctrines of the Bible are introduced in Genesis. Its theme reflects the theme of Scripture: our redemption from sin. It establishes God as our Creator, then proceeds with the story of God’s interaction with His creation.

Taking Small Groups Online Kayla Marcantonio
Originally posted on InfluenceMagazine.com Over the past several months, nearly every U.S. pastor has joined the media team. As with other challenges believers have faced throughout history, the Church has risen to the occasion amid the coronavirus pandemic. The gospel continues to go forth, through online messages, drive-in services, and acts of compassion. At Crossing Place Church (Assemblies of God) in Bayou Vista, Louisiana, we’ve asked the same questions as other congregations across the country: Which ministries do we focus on? Where can we innovate? What can we continue but do differently? We decided to keep two things consistently running online: Sunday service and small groups. With social distancing measures in place, it can be tempting to cut small groups. Bible studies and curriculum-based groups can continue discussion through video conferencing apps, such as Zoom and FaceTime, but will anyone actually log on? We consider our small group leaders to be an extension of pastoral care. They serve as pastors to their small group members, those God has entrusted to their care (1 Peter 5:2). But right now, leaders can’t sit next to their
8
people and extend a hug or a hand in prayer. So, we adapt as the Holy Spirit leads. Shepherding is still shepherding, even during this time of social distancing. Care looks different, but we can continue to connect others to God and one another while remaining at home. In our time of leading physically distanced small groups, we’ve learned three important lessons.
1. The clock does not define small group success. I’ve been known to say, “Our small group was excellent. It lasted more than two hours!”
Discipleship Ideas · Fall 2020
There’s nothing wrong with this statement. We’ve had some amazing extended times of discipleship. But this is probably not the season for long meetings. Because many people seem to have extra time on their hands, leaders may expect longer sessions. However, technology has trained our brains to process information quickly when staring at a screen. We also get bored more easily. And if there are young children at home, a thirty-minute breather may be all some group members can manage before getting back to family life. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by measuring success by the length of your meeting. Our prayer group has landed at a solid thirty minutes when it’s normally an hour or more. Did we fail? Is our group less spiritual? Absolutely not. Success right now is a smile on a frustrated parent’s face, connection when depression is at bay, and a reminder that someone is thinking of them.
2. Leading conversation is more like moderating. Think about your favorite news or talk show. What makes each of these programs work is the moderator or host. This person sets up the topic, leads by asking questions, gives time cues, and offers everyone a chance to speak.
• “ Before signing off, I want each of us to share one thing we are thankful for during this time” (engagement and pastoring).
3. Creativity helps. Now is the time to embrace innovation. Small group leaders have come up with some ingenious ideas for bringing people together while apart. Consider these examples: •T he softball group turned into a sports discussion group and held an NFL mock draft online. •A leader for a group of preteen girls issues daily art challenges through text. When each girl finishes the project, she texts it to the group for everyone to see. •T he Couples for Christ group played an online version of The Newlywed Game. The wives answered questions while the husbands left the room, and vice versa. The couple with the most points won a gift card. • The Men’s Coffee group asked guys to post “before” and “after” pictures of the projects they’ve tackled. •A group leader mailed out stamped envelopes and encouraged group members to send letters to people who are at home alone.
Without such guidance, the show would not be successful. One person would talk too much. Other contributors would hold back, never saying anything. The same is true for your online group.
At first glance, these activities may not seem spiritual. Yet they are helping people connect with one another and find encouragement in the body of Christ. During this difficult and sometimes awkward time, small groups are continuing to offer friendship and share the love of Jesus (John 15:17).
Don’t just ask, “So, what’s going on?” Your online group needs a topic, prepared questions, and your direction. Statements like these can help guide the flow of online meetings in terms of direction, time, engagement, and pastoring:
Do not give up on your small groups because of social distancing. Don’t just sideline this vital ministry until life returns to normal and you can do things the way you’ve always done them.
• “ Here is a verse God put on my heart. I want each person to share what came to mind when I was reading it” (direction).
People need one another now more than ever. Adopt the mind-set of Paul in Philippians 3:13 (NIV), “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead” — or, in this case, what is online.
• “ We have a couple of things left to talk about in our group. Take another minute so we can hear how the story ends” (time).
