St. Elizabeth Internal Medicine Resident’s Research Earns Top Award

Cindy Xia, MD A St. Elizabeth Internal Medicine resident has taken first place in a state-wide medical research competition and will present her work nationally later this year. Dr. Cindy Xia’s research on the incidence and treatment of gout among hospitalized patients with kidney disease was selected from more than 120 posters for the award at The Ohio Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Xia, a resident with St. Elizabeth Health Center’s Internal Medicine Residency program, will now present her efforts in New Orleans at the national ACP meeting. Dr. Xia’s research revealed almost 1 in 7 hospitalized patients with chronic kidney disease also had gout. Older males with diabetes and high cholesterol levels were at greater risk for developing gout. She is hopeful such research will improve the care of patients. “Since untreated gout increases morbidity and mortality, this finding may arouse more attention in the management and treatment of gout as a chronic disease," reported Dr. Xia. Working with her on this effort were her colleagues from the Internal Medicine department, local nephrologist, Erdal

Sarac, MD, and fellow internal medicine resident Yanli Fan, MD. The St. Elizabeth Internal Medicine Residency is a three-year, fully accredited ACGME program. The residency, which recently received another five-year full accreditation, is affiliated with the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). Residents receive training in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient management, invasive and noninvasive procedures and all subspecialty areas. This prepares them for the diverse challenges of medical practice. Dr. Xia is a graduate of Tongji Medical University in China and has previous research experience at Dupont. She also holds a graduate degree from the University of North Texas in Neuroscience.
