One of Birmingham's first goldsmiths. Roger Pemberton, was recorded in a survey backin 1553. However if wasn't until the 18th and I9fh centuries that Birmingham prospered from the Industrial Revolution and developed into a large industrial town, manufacturing a vast range of products, often from various metals. In the mid 1700s. demand for housing ensured this area was mainly residential, quite an upmarket area even then, ibut the small manufacturers were moving in and with road and canal improvements, their businesses thrived, f he Quarter was mainly based around St. Paul's Square, jjjfjich features the church built in 1779. The growth of industry 'into this area was aided by the establishmentof the Birmingham *Assay Office in 1773. which was petitioned for by Matthew Boulton. Jn!J.other industrialists. In 1846. Uyse Street was constructed^ byffichard Howard-Uyse. Hylton Street was then cut to the north? Branston.
