One of the basic premises of hypnotherapy is that what goes on in the subconscious mind affects all of our behaviour.

Often, our problems can spring from deeply held beliefs and memories that we might not be aware of as we go about our everyday lives.

But those faulty beliefs and the unhappy memories are still down there.

Many forms of therapy and counselling, including hypnosis, aim to deal with those deep places in our psyche, and it is into this part of our minds that suggestions are placed during a hypnotherapy session.

We can thank Sigmund Freud for popularizing the idea of the subconscious or unconscious mind.

According to Freud – who also pioneered the use of hypnosis as a form of therapy – the unconscious is where we shove all those things that we don’t really want floating around in our minds: all the unhappy memories and all the socially unacceptable desires.

However, like shoving things down into a rubbish bin and never emptying it, the junk we shove into our unconscious or subconscious minds can ferment away and bubble up to generally cause a stink unless it is dealt with.

It could be argued that Freud was merely giving scientific backing to an idea that has been held by many religions in the past, mainstream and otherwise.

Many spiritual teachers have held that the human body has three main parts: body, soul (or mind) and spirit, and what happens to one affects the other two.

The soul or mind corresponds to the conscious emotions, thoughts and logic, while the spirit is the deeper part of our psyches:

The subconscious. It is no coincidenc.e that a lot of the techniques used to induce a trance during a hypnosis session are similar to some of those used in meditation, which the yogis and Zen masters used to open up themselves to the spirit world.

The pioneers of hypnotherapy deliberately drew on these techniques, which they derived from traditional Hindu texts, to help induce a state where the subconscious is more receptive.

Some people ask whether the subconscious mind has a lot of untapped powers.

Human beings have wondered about this and wanted to have these extraordinary powers for some time, and have tried a number of methods.
