1ST SEMESTER PROJECTS RETHINKING CEBU GUADALUPE RIVER
INTRODUCTION The course task is focused on urban regeneration, on understanding the river and its implication in the urban environment and fabric. The assignment gives the opportunity to think about social, cultural and environmental effects of public spaces and design in everyday life. Guadalupe River is one of the rivers that cross the city of Cebu: it begins in the mountains and finishes by the sea. Its relation with the city is complicated: it is contaminated by trash and sewage and its sides are invaded by informal settlements. The river represents a back street that nobody wants to see instead of a public space or green infrastructure. There are three situations/sites along its way, representing different problems and solutions. Each group should choose one site, making sure the three situations are covered by the class. 1. Mountains 2. Urban: Highland or Lowland 3. Waterfront: Coastal
04 ARCHITECTURAL COLLAGE 2021 ARCHITECTURAL COLLAGE
Rethinking Guadalupe River Turning problems into possibilities
This is our first individual task. Starting from our chosen site, we should produce two images, collages, visual compositions, etc., in order to represent the river. We should represent the personal perception of the place through atmospheres. The first image is the actual situation, and the second image is the ideal future of the river.
"Think of the big picture while acting on the ground."

NOLLI MAP
Arrangement of building blocks are disorganized. There is a clear distinction between public and private spaces.
USES
There are moderate-density dwellings, including attached dwellings in the area and some informal settlers residing along the Guadalupe river and the mountain area.
GEOLOGY MAP
Its soil type is composed mainly of Baguio clay loam, Faraon clay, and Mandawe clay loam.
MOBILITY & CONNECTIVITY
There are no bus stops and jeepney stops in the area due to its narrow road. Their only way of transportation are motorcycles, bicycles, and other small vehicles.
URBAN GROWTH
There are residences consuming an open space on top of the mountain and it has a possibility to expand and grow.
GREEN AREAS
It stands out for its environmental appeal, with lots of green spaces, high air quality and great biodiversity. The preservation of forest is needed to protect the flora and fauna in this area.

URBAN FABRIC
This shows the urban fabric of the site. In this site the river is located in the center… and as you can see, there are a lot of buildings and residential houses surrounding it, which makes the river out of sight and unable to rehabilitate and breathe for itself.
CONNECTIVITY, MOBILITY & USES
Talking about connectivity, the site only has two bridges 966m apart from each other, and the only road for people to access the other side of the river.
GREEN AREAS
Although there are plenty of green spaces, the access is still limited because most of them are privately owned and only the Fuente Circle is open to the public which makes fewer active interactions and relationships.
FLOOD AND SEWAGE RISKS
This portion represents how risky and dangerous the site is during floods and it needs to be solved.
SUN AND WIND PATH
Here is the sun and wind path with a heat index around 28-34deg C.

STRATEGIES RELOCATION
RELOCATION
Relocation for the establishments and residences located near the river. To prevent them from being affected by the river, and provided spaces for them to transfer. As for the building guidelines, to have more livelihood, we proposed a 4 storey building that has a commercial on the first floor and the residences for the rest of the floors.
GREEN SPACES
STOPBANKS
Covered the 22.36 hec of the site with greenery, to prevent flooding and making the area relaxing
CONNECTING BRIDGES & BOARDWALK
CIRCULATION
Provided connecting bridges and boardwalk to make the area easily accessible with both communities in the area. Placing playgrounds and exercise pods in the area to make the community more active and also making the children enjoy the area. Placed food markets since Filipinos are known to love festivals and foods. Giving a stronger bond to the community and amphitheaters, also another way for flood prevention but also a place for people to relax. And an eco-recycling facility near the capitol to have more engagements with the community in making the river clean and keeping the garbage segregated and turn into something useful for the community. And circulation of the proposed strategy for the site.

The Guadalupe River, specifically the residents of barangays Ermita and Pasil, face several challenges as a result of the polluted river; each of them has different effects and perspectives on the river problem. Some residents are concerned about the situation since it may have an impact on their health and livelihood. The unclean river will also have an impact on the community's economic progress.
EXISTING CONDITIONS
The Guadalupe River was found to have exceptionally high pollution levels.
20 TONS OF GARBAGE GATHERED IN GUADALUPE RIVER CLEAN-UP DRIVE; MAHIGA CREEK TO FOLLOW
Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella revealed this on Saturday, August 17, as an army of 5,000 City Hall employees and volunteers participated in a simultaneous clean-up drive in nine stations of the Guadalupe River.
3-HOUR INFERNO RAGES IN 3 SITIOS IN ERMITA; 273 HOUSES DESTROYED
MORE than 600 families, or 2,578 individuals, were displaced while five persons were injured after a fire struck three sitios in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 5.

It is observed that on the right side,a large portion is allocated for residences in barangay pasil while in ermita is more on commercial spaces.
WASTE
Garbages are scattered in the stream down to the tributary. The biggest problem regarding the Guadalupe river is the increasing amount of disposal into the river. The waste consists mostly of domestic waste and sewage water.

The minimal spaces for greenery are very clear and evident in the maps that the space has a lot of structures and residential space.

Residential developments are also being created alongside the river and in front of the coast. As a result, the neighborhood became quite congested.
FLOOD PRONE
As a result, flooding occurred. Since the site is near the coastline and the river, it is characterized as a flood prone area. Most floods occur during prolonged heavy rainfall and strong typhoons.

CRIME RATE
Due to a lack of greenery, We don't have many interactive locations which play a big role to a community. It is where people socialize, establish culture and contribute to the health and wellness of the community.
Murder, riding-in-tandem, drugs, and shootings are all common occurrences in barangay Pasil and barangay Ermita.

PUBLIC GREEN SPACES
Since the site has less greenery, our strategy is to add greenery and parks. We place greenery to give a breathable space for the residents. Greenery and parks near the river are provided to encourage community relations, the use of bikes to help minimize the carbon emission intake, and to balance diversity and biodiversity. And also to help minimize the flood in the site.

OTHER STRATEGIES
ANGLED SEAWALL
"Umbrella Tree" LESS GREEN PUBLIC AREAS
Terminalia catappa has corky, light fruit that are dispersed by water. The seed within the fruit is edible when fully ripe, tasting almost like almond. As the tree gets older, its crown becomes more flattened to form a spreading, vase shape which can provide shade to the planted area. Its branches are distinctively arranged in tiers. Talisay can grow on sandy beaches by the shore, flooded river banks, inland, or on city streets. PUBLIC MARKET
Talisay Tree is also a medicinal plant. Due to this chemical richness, the leaves (and the bark) are used in different herbal medicines for various purposes. For instance in Taiwan, fallen leaves are used as an herb to treat liver diseases. In Suriname, an herbal tea made from the leaves has been prescribed against dysentery and diarrhea. The leaves may contain agents for prevention of cancers (although they have no demonstrated anticarcinogenic properties) and antioxidants, as well as anticlastogenic characteristics.
USERS CAN ENJOY THE RIVER
INTERACTIVE SPACES
Aside from the large green spaces and angled seawalls, providing a public market will be accessible to the public since there is an existing fish market in that area. Also, to give easy access to the users on providing their everyday needs

PROPOSED SPACES
Talisay Vegetation A place where they can walk in the shade of the trees, relax and breathe fresh air while admiring the beauty of nature.
Exercise Area
Public Market Public markets can generate a range of community benefits including small business opportunities, preservation and promotion of local foods and foodways, and a forum for public interaction.
A place that can encourage people to live healthily and build relationships with the community. And it can also serve young people as well as the elderly.
Sitting Areas
Playground A safe space where children can play and build friendships with the community.
Boardwalk
A place where they can enjoy the nature as well as encourage community relationships. Bike racks can access to recreational activities, as well as aid high carbon emission intake
A place where people can appreciate the coastal view and river, as well as to attract local tourist and business owners

INTRODUCTION
REVITALIZATION OF COLON STREET
The city is experiencing a rapid urban development where people have almost forgotten how rich and diverse the cultural heritage of Cebu specifically around Colon Street. It is of utmost importance that these buildings/ structures/monuments shall be restored, preserved, renovated, redeveloped or reconstructed, to protect its sense of place. Without history we won’t be able to imagine our future.

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE
INTRODUCTION DESIGN BRIEF Libraries are key defenders in the fight against disinformation because they hold centuries of learning, information, history, and truth. Libraries assist keep the people informed with facts rather than confused with fiction by providing free access to educational, news, and historical resources.
The goal of this project is to create a space that isn't just for one purpose but also to utilize the building in a way that meets the needs of the site, people, and environment. The project's approach is that it respects the building's prior use while providing a library that helps the user fulfill their expectations while also offering an educational urban farm for carbon sequestration, producing food, experimentation, and teaching to younger generations.
HISTORY
Emerald Building is a seven-storey shutdown/abandoned commercial building in D. Jakosalem Street, Parian, Cebu City that was built by Mr. Alfredo Young, the founder of Young's Construction.

The Goal of the space is to offer a medical center located in Colon street where used to be access by many people. We wanted the space to reflect comfort, security and wellness. Where it becomes an empathetic place, simple and unpretentious. And will become a familiar but long-lasting space that soaks in naturally to many people.
ET
We used polycarbonate material and french windows to open the space and to let light soak in so that by welcoming the outside elements naturally the outside light can permeate into the space without disturbing the lifestyle and also to naturally recognize the changes of the day in the space.

DESIGN BRIEF
Colon Street is one of the oldest streets in Cebu City. Colon witnessed the rise and downfall of Cebu, making it more historically significant than any other street in the province. Our end goal for this revitalization is to make Colon Street lighthearted again, especially for the tourists. A place where you can feel secure and free. Keep the architectural and heritage building, as well as its design elements, in order to extend or prolong its existence. Lastly, to reintroduce the happy community and its festive culture without feeling afraid and to create a spatial and multi-sensorial experience that can lead to incredible and memorable moments and enhance the users’ experiences and satisfaction. To create a relationship between people and space.

"JOURNEY" Colon Street is one of the oldest street in Cebu City. Colon witnessed the rise and downfall of Cebu, making it more historical than any street in the province. But, today its historicity is gone, unappreciated and forgotten. The first location recognizes Cebuanos' talents. This includes busking, which involves a group of people serenading the crowd. It was inspired by a blind couple playing guitar and harmonica in Colon Street. The location reflects Cebuanos' creativity. The venue is also open to both local and international bands and performers. The second location is a venue to admire Cebuano art. The location has a lot of vibrant colors. This is where local artists and artisans can display their work, as well as local handicrafts. Following that is a location in which we will appreciate Cebu's festive culture. Cebu is known for its Sinulog festival, which is a traditional celebration. During the festival, there is a splash of color and dance customs. The architectural elements in the area, particularly the flowers utilized as a shed, are also inspired by the event. Then there's the part where people can admire Cebuano businesses. Cebu has been recognized as a center of trade and commerce since then, and it still has a high number of businesses today. The area contains a lot of retail stores and food hubs, which makes the route busy and bustling. Playgrounds and parks are introduced to the neighborhood for the use of both children and adults. The final stop on the journey is where you can learn about the Colon's fascinating history. People can learn the facts and history of the street while walking on the pedestrian walkway, which is lined by podiums. Parks are also introduced to encourage social interaction and to draw attention to the Colon Obelisk, which has been neglected in recent years. The Colon Obelisk marks the completion of the trip, reminding us that the beginning of history must be respected and remembered.

SECTIONS
SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE ARCADED SIDEWALK - There is already an existing arcaded sidewalk. So we retained it and level it to cater to all especially the PWDs. BIKE LANE - We implement bike lanes to reduce carbon emissions and to encourage people to ride bikes for health benefits.
SECTION A
SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE
SECTION B
GREENERY - Since Colon street lacks greenery, we made sure to put trees along the road to give pedestrian and buildings shed and to improve air quality of the place. BENCHES - Colon street is 1.17km long so we added benches where users can sit and enjoy the area. STREETLIGHTS - We provided streetlights to make people feel secure and accessible when strolling around Colon at night, where there is a lot of crime. PEDESTRIANIZED ROAD - In order to really appreciate Colon's history and beauty we pedestrianized the area to promote walkability and lessen the pollution of the area and to make it greener. MATERIAL: asphalt
SECTION C 1:50 on 20x30 PAPER
SECTION A : BUSKING AREA
We added a movable platform and a shed for artists to perform.
UNDERGROUND WIRING - To eliminate spaghetti wires, we provided underground wiring on Colon Street. This method prevents fire hazards, minimizes accidents, and improves road safety. DRAINAGE - To improve wastewater in Colon Street, proper drainage is established to minimize flooding, water pollution, and lessen the risk of diseases.
SECTION B: KALESA AREA
We added a sculpture of a "Kalesa" and colorful shed to show the colorful and lively culture of Cebu
SECTION C: OBELISK AREA
We added a park to really highlight the Obelisk so people will appreciate it more.

"THE ARCHITECTURE OF VIOLENCE" Reaction paper by : Roselle Ann P. Rosell In this film, Israeli architect Eyal Weizman discusses the importance of architecture in the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the evolution of urban warfare. He demonstrates how architecture is central to the Israeli occupation of Palestine on a journey through the West Bank's settlements and roads, as well as along the Separation Wall. The architecture of occupation. This pertains to the Israeli settlement system. They are strategically positioned on West Bank hilltops, according to Weizman, to look out over Palestinian valleys and towns below in order to "dominate." Buildings are weapons in Weizman’s eyes. The issue Weizman sought was that the occupied Palestinian West Bank was viewed as a battlefield from all sides. He stated, “The weapons and ammunition are very simple elements: they are trees, they are terraces, they are houses, and they are barriers.” When a conflict arises, the environment's slow violence is immediately deployed. Israeli soldiers moved down from the settlements into Palestinian towns and villages. The checkpoint becomes impenetrable to anyone passing through, and the border closes in on them, putting the entire territory into use. The architecture of destruction. During the intifada, Weizman witnessed Israel purposefully and destructively reorganize cities in order to take the upper hand from their defenders. The West Bank cities of Nablus and Jenin refugee camp, for example, served as testbeds for urban warfare development. Instead of exposing itself on the city's existing roads when Israel attempted to capture Jenin refugee camp's heart, "Palestine's ground zero," the army used D9 bulldozers to carve out new avenues, flattening homes in the process. Surprisingly, when the residents of Jenin refugee camp rebuilt the city after the army had left, they built a road wide enough for tanks to pass through. They didn't want the tanks to annihilate their homes once more. They did, however, lose their shield: the city's density. Another strategy used in Sejarah during the current conflict is to drive armed carriers into buildings, usually family homes, and then use the holes in the walls to deploy soldiers. Weizman stated, "The soldiers immediately become saturated inside the buildings themselves... moving between the one house and the other because it's so dense. Like worms inside an apple." They're reversing the relationship between private and public spaces. The private space becomes a circulation space, while the public space, which is the street, becomes a killing ground for resistance fighters. Weizman, on the other hand, uses his most recent project, Forensic Architecture, uses innovative architectural and visual technologies to turn a building's military wounds into evidence that can be used against the state in the investigation of war crimes. He brings together scientists, journalists, and graphic designers to use cellphone footage, floor plans, and road maps to examine destroyed structures for evidence of human rights violations. As "archaeologists of the present," they pieced together the timeline of events, such as which buildings were demolished by artillery, tank fire, and bulldozers. They've also looked into Israel's "knock on roof" warnings, which have been employed frequently in the most recent Gaza warfare.
"GREENING THE CITY" Vietnam is an intriguing destination for many people to discover cutting-edge, modern architecture. After many years of conflict and wars fought on its soil, the densely forested country has remade itself—and is now pegged at a GDP of $1.3 billion. Rapid growth is inevitably accompanied by the loss of greenery, so how will the city strike a balance between progress and the creation of a livable, green city?
In this film, award-winning architect Vo Trong Nghia leads a mission to change Vietnam's perceptions of architecture and urban spaces by constructing environmentally sustainable buildings. One of the most pressing issues in Vietnam is the city's rapid urbanization, which is expected to reach 100 million people by 2020. Only 2.5 percent of Ho Chi Minh City is considered green space. Furthermore, 90% of children under the age of five suffer from respiratory illness. As a result, Vietnamese cities have lost their tropical charm. In a tropical street of Ho Chi Minh City, heavy traffic with a lot of motorbikes and city noises are evident in the area. There are rows of terraced houses with insufficient natural light, and residents are subjected to various forms of pollution. People have realized the value of having their business on a main road as a result of the economic boom of the 2000s and the rapid development of the economy. So, they utilize every inch for construction, leaving no space for plants. As a result, the city is almost devoid of greenery. There is more to life than steel and concrete. Vo trong tries to brighten up a city by greening it which is part of his work. He is working to restore nature to his city. We can see how he did it with the House for Trees, Binh Thanh House, and Wind and Water Bar in the film. The House for Trees is a concrete structure with bamboo formwork that aims to encourage people to plant more trees in the city. The Binh Thanh House is unique in that it has a double-skin design and air ventilation. He considered the ventilation and structure in all of his structures. The Wind and Water Bar was his first bamboo construction experiment, in which he used only bamboo as his material and completely no steel was used. Vo Trong has been commissioned to design an entire green neighborhood near Ho Chi Minh City and it is the first of its kind in Vietnam. In this project, he proposed a vertical farming city and he must convince the investors to approve his designs before construction can start. During the meeting, the executives were not convinced because they want the highest profit. But a few months later, the construction on the vertical farming city began because his vision for the project was later realized. But the city isn't the only place where issues exist. Vo Trong's next project, the lowcost house, takes them to the countryside of Mekong Delta where they encounter a variety of issues and challenges. In both cases, his goal is to solve these issues through architecture that is sustainable, longterm, and affordable. They have observed that increasing floods are threatening the lives of the Delta’s residents. The purpose of this project is to introduce a prototype house for low-income people in the Mekong Delta by simplifying the design and using low-cost materials. The people who were left behind by Vietnam’s economic boom. As a result, they attempted to design a permanent home that was similar to a mobile home. People can gather in groups to make it easy. Their policy is that even if it’s low-cost, it should be comfortable and durable. The construction was completed for two weeks and he achieved his goals in this project. The family that he invited was satisfied with his low-cost house. What I can do better to lower the cost is maybe to incorporate industrial building materials with local materials available to achieve a more economical sustainable structure. Looking back on how the architecture landscape has changed in both urban and rural areas is undeniably amazing. The architect Vo Trong Nghia's adaption of architectural ideas for worldwide social progress has had a significant impact on prosperity's views. In conclusion, I agree with Vo Trong Nghia that the most important mission for a modern architect is to bring green spaces back to earth because we may re-establish our connection to the earth by incorporating natural elements into our homes. We need to change our current way of thinking to avoid living in concrete jungles sooner or later. We do not live with nature. We live over her.

"THE ARCHITECTURE OF VIOLENCE" Reaction paper by : May Claire Matugas
"GREEENING THE CITY"
Violence in a community develops a negative reputation and environment. The family living in the region was left with no freedom and was traumatized as a consequence to the cruel movement. The Palestinian territories and Israeli settlements creates a boundary to protect their property and their safety, and architects utilized architecture as a weapon to the upcoming assaults. When violence is carried through architecture, the latter must discover ways to fight it, and it must do so using tools from its own toolbox. Architecture becomes the important
Green architecture, often known as green design, is a building method that reduces the negative impacts of construction projects on human health and the environment. By using environmentally friendly building materials and construction methods, the "green" architect or designer aims to protect the air, water, and soil.
evidence to read contours of that violence.
features in his designs.
Architecture and the built environment are thought to be a form of progressive violence. The occupation is a steadily evolving ecosystem that is designed to strangle Palestinian townships, villages, and towns, resulting in an unlivable environment for the inhabitants. Local Israelis and
In Vietnam, the population is rapidly increasing, with population explosions occurring in Asian cities in particular. But these countries don’t have the knowledge to create an architecture that suits their climate. VTN have discovered that 2.5 % of Ho Chi Minh city is considered green spaces
Palestinians describe how it feels to live in a landscape where everything is designed to keep the two peoples apart while retaining control, from fences and roads, terraces and sewage, to settlements and surveillance.
and 90% of children under 5 suffer respiratory illnesses. Green places in Ho Chi Minh City are challenged by urbanization and are losing their tropical beauty.
The main issue is that the place became a battlefield. The houses were demolished by cutting holes in the walls to allow the soldiers to circulate in the private sections and construct a passage. Conflicts between the two areas become a barrier to them having a worry-free environment.
As VTN visited the sites, he saw that the streets were congested, and that the noise pollution from the motorbikes and people on the streets was awful. Residents are concentrated in row terrace buildings with inadequate light and are exposed to various forms of pollution.
In terms of quality and safety, their houses are built on the hilltop for self-protection and for them to dominate the surrounding. For them to manage the condition in the Palestine territory. Despite the fact that Israel constructed hundreds of thousands of structures in the West Bank, there are only a few types of structures. Suburban typology is a long-standing variant on single and double family buildings with red roofs. Red roof is something mandated by law because this is allowing the military to navigate the landscape to understand whats ours, where we can bomb or not. This style of architecture becomes a tool for them to classify whether it's an enemy or a subordinate. They also made sure to set up checkpoints at each border to prevent Palestinians from crossing into their territory.Turnstiles are provided in Israel since they have become the most crucial instrument at checkpoints. However, these turnstyles created a horrifying and humiliating experience, particularly for persons with a huge body type. The most essential evidence for reading the dimensions of violence is architecture. To address the issues that the location was experiencing, architect Eyal Weizman established the Forensic Architecture project. Forensic architecture is done to reconstruct the battle itself and what happened by looking very closely at the ruins and uses architectural facts as evidence in judicial and political contexts. The first project they completed was an examination of drone warfare, in which technology is used to aid in the resolution of problems in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, and Gaza. The forensic architects are working under the directive to investigate specific hits and to rebuild them as accurately as possible. The solution of Architect Eyal Weizman is smart but to add to the solutions given by the architect, for me they must solve the root problem of the places with conflicts. Communication is essential so that they can speak their mind and principles without trying to shoot bullets at one other. If intimate communication fails, I believe it is preferable if they develop rules and mandates addressing their past/current concerns and to respect one another so that the communities in both places can live in peace and with individual liberty. "To be an architect is not only to build and contribute to this destruction of the place, but to use architecture as a way to both interpret, protest and resist. “ by Architect Eyal Weizman, this phrase struck me the most, because in times of violence, Architects can create an impact by analyzing the situation, protest if needed and lastly to prevent something that can damage the situation in the future.
Vo Trong Nghia is an Architect known for his popular green designs. As a modern architect he advocates providing green open spaces/ green
They neglected to offer green places due to the fast-paced economy. Luckily, VTN was commissioned to design an entire green neighborhood near Ho Chi Minh City. He proposed to have a vertical farming city, where the design will provide ample green open spaces, green roofs and proper ventilations. By this design, the users will feel luxury instead of low cost housing. VTN’s main goal is to bring nature back to the city. His approach to architecture is to solve urban problems through sustainable, long-term and affordable architecture. While on another site visit, another issue surfaced: rising floods are putting the lives of delta people at risk. VTN’s core idea is that providing low cost housing is a problem in Vietnam. Where he could create affordable housing but still durable and can fit Mekong Delta. The purpose of this project is to introduce a prototype house for low-income people in the Mekong Delta by using lowcost materials, low cost but has the quality to last for a long time. The challenge that they have faced during the construction is the difficulty of transporting the materials to the site since the only transport vehicles are boats. The proposal of VTN was realized after 3 months of fighting for green architecture. “Green Architecture helps people live harmoniously with nature and elevate human life by embracing the powers of the sun, wind and water into living space. If the current thinking does not change sooner or later, citizens will actually live in concrete jungles.” Says VTN. For a modern architect, the most important mission is to bring green spaces back to the earth. If the people can develop a sense of treasuring nature, their way of urban planning and construction will become eco-friendly, then Ho Chi Minh city and other cities in Vietnam becomes better. This statement from VTN applies to all places, not only in Vietnam, if we can adapt eco-friendly construction, the world will become better and will last longer.

Vietnam he recognizes how people’s faces was different, before people are happy and relax but now their faces are exhausted. He visited a land where they wanted to build for the poor, He interviewed a family to be a potential user of his proposed low cost housing. The Pham Family which are pineapple farmers lived in a shelter hut for pineapple farming, the layout of the house id very simple but its durability of it is not long lasting and their health is at stake because they do not have proper closed windows and doors which the mosquitoes can easily get in. They also need to repair the hut in every 3 years which can cost to $500 and a big damage for their everyday needs.VTN gathered their problems and come up to the concept of S-House.
The siege relies on the meaning encoded in architectural detail: red tiles are a required marking for Israeli settlements, allowing them to be clearly identifiable from the air. The stone facades are a visual ploy to help with Jerusalem's 'extension' to incorporate communities like Gilo. Settlements built in a slice-of-pie pattern, rather than the more usual circular pattern, are wedges thrust across and into Palestinian towns, establishing extra "facts on the ground" to guarantee territorial contiguity is impossible. During their visit in Palestine in remembering what happened during the war with Israel. The lay-out of their houses can be used to shield them when they will be invaded. I have noticed how narrow their hallways and was made from a durable material, bricks. Weizman, on the other hand, has discovered a method for architecture to resist. His most recent project, Forensic Architecture, uses revolutionary architectural and visual technology to transform a building's combat wounds into evidence that may be used against the state in the investigation of war crimes. Since most modern warfare is urban, the vast majority of people who are killed in wars now die inside buildings, often killed by the building itself as it collapses on them. Because of the civilian, ‘coded’ nature of architecture, it is easy to forget about the role of architects in not only perpetuating but also creating the occupation. In this future, he imagines how settlements might be turned into Palestinian public institutions, and military bases into nature parks for migratory birds. It was also to utilize architecture to investigate various environmental, social, and political problems across the world. While many of the videos in our series have looked at how architects are using architecture — the design and building of physical structures – to adapt to increasing urbanization, pollution, limited resources, or natural catastrophes, this one takes a different approach. “Houses are murdered just as their inhabitants are killed and the memories of things are slaughtered, wood, stones, glass, iron, mortar – scattered like human limbs. And cotton silk, linen, notebooks, books – all torn apart like the unspoken words of people who did not have the time to say them.” -Extract taken from The House Murdered by Mahmoud Darwish
"GREENING THE CITY" Green architecture is a design philosophy that encourages environmentally friendly, long-lasting structures. Sustainable architects strive to use non-synthetic materials and renewable energy sources to reduce the negative impact of construction projects on human health and the environment as a whole. To avoid long-haul transportation, consider solar and wind power, energy-saving appliances, and locally sourced materials. Vietnam's rapid expansion has resulted in several of the urban issues, including a lack of green space, electrical shortages, and floods. Traffic congestion and serious air pollution are being caused by the growing number of vehicles on the road.As the population increases in the world, it decreases the chance of having green public spaces in the city because of the houses that makes the city a concrete jungle.
Based in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Vo Trong Nghia is famous for his green architecture. Is frightened on the existing conditions of the people in
The improvements in quality of life to poor, rural populations provided by the S-House, those populations are able to sustain themselves without resorting to massive urban migration. The poor are frequently compelled by their circumstances to live in extremely low-cost, low-quality housing, which results in hefty maintenance expenses, creating a vicious cycle of poverty. High material prices, high transportation costs, and high construction expenses are all major obstacles to developing higherquality homes for these populations. S-House overcomes all of these issues by needing just the shipment of a basic steel frame that can be assembled in little over three hours from smaller, relatively lightweight components that can be brought by boat. The steel structure then supports the walls, roof, and flooring, which are all made of natural, locally available materials. According to VTN, this design is very durable and is predicted to last up to 30 years, which means people will save money on upkeep and have more money to spend on other things. Another major difficulty in rural regions is safety, as limited infrastructure is prone to being destroyed by the sometimes unpredictable weather and frequent natural catastrophes that characterize a tropical environment like Vietnam's. These safety concerns are another important motivator for people to abandon their home villages and relocate to the city. VTN maintains, however, that the S-House is extremely resistant to weather and natural calamities, implying that the safety hazards are minimal. The sustainable development concept that VTN presented is very useful in solving our housing problems here in the Philippines, In considering the budget, ventilation and the programs of the people who will use it. I agree with all the things that he discusses throughout the video. He showed what is really like to be an architect. My conclusion to the S-House is that one of the project's key advantages is the inexpensive cost of the house, which allows low-income residents in Vietnam's tropical areas, which are typically isolated, to have accommodation. Additionally, the house is mostly constructed from locally sourced natural materials, is simple to transport and construct, and is quite sturdy. Because of these characteristics, the S-House is a viable proposal for building sustainable communities in Vietnam's numerous disadvantaged rural areas.
