Presentation Junior architect, graduated from the architecture school of Lille (France) English equivalent could be Part II Architectural assistant-, I am looking to enrich my own experiences in the practice of architecture. I am interested in alternative practices of architecture, ones that include collaboration, having contacts with all people engaged in a project, scenography, cradle to cradle, DIY and innovation. I believe that architectural practice should be a collaboration between various people using different techniques and means of expression. As a resourceful and engaged person, I know how to adapt myself and to play an active and creative role. Curious and persistent, I am not the sort to give up easily. To further my experiences and knowledges, I have combined my studies of architecture with urban sociology and anthropology. My final dissertation was about the re-use and occupation of wasteland and vacant land through citizen-led initiatives in Liverpool (UK). Ideally, I would like urban sociology and anthropology to enrich my own architectural practice. Picture: selfportrait exhibit in Lille for a weekend event @maison folie moulin

Kitty’s Launderette Kitty’s Launderette is a community project in Anfield, North Liverpool (UK). Kitty’s Launderette aims to transform a former workshop building into a multi-purpose community launderette and workshop, as well as creating flats above. I was able to work alongside the team in preparation for the planning application. I am currently a member of the co-operative. I produced architectural drawings, overseen by Toby Wallis of Architectural Emporium architects. The planning application itself was submitted by Alex Williams of LJ Architects.

Graduation My final project at the Architecture and Landscape Design School of Lille was centred on the renovation of the city’s 1930’s houses, comparable in design to English terraced houses. The project was centred on improving the energy efficiency of the houses, whilst preserving their character and architectural heritage. The proposed project was not about presenting a definitive, formal proposal for the renovation work; it was about approaching the project from a socioanthropological perspective. Local residents came from a variety of social backgrounds and had differing needs. By actively engaging residents through surveys, games and other activities, we were able to build a much greater understanding of their individual needs and aspirations for the renovation of their properties. We were thereby able to put forward a variety of potential solutions tailored to their particular circumstances. We also built a strong knowledge of the houses themselves and furthered our research of similar renovation projects with comparable aims, in order to present as comprehensive a proposal as possible. Following a socio-anthropological methodology, we enabled local residents to play an active role in this energy efficiency renovation project, which we viewed as a potential catalyst for further regeneration of the area. It also promoted the practice of architectural residency within the project, in that there was always at least one architect on site to engage the community and be present in a hands-on capacity.

Le cabanito I worked on the conception and build of a garden pavilion alongside 5 other young architects for a private owner. As part of a project to redesign a large domestic yard, a garden structure was commissioned, to be used for tool storage. Free rein was given to the architects in terms of design and build. The idea was to build it in a simple shape with as many local materials as possible. On a concrete foundation, the pavilion’s wooden structure and planks are made from locally sourced timber, along with polycarbonate.

Innovation Crisis Workshop ≠1 & ≠2 As part of «La Semaine de Solidarité», an annual event in Lille which aims to address the issues and concerns of immigrants within the city, Atelier Volant collective (architects & landscape designers) organised in 2011 and 2012 the Innovation Crisis Exhibition. As a member of the collective, I assisted in delivering week-long workshops with three people from the Roms (gipsy) community. The purpose of these workshops was to exchange and develop construction techniques with architects, urbanists, sociologists, artists, students, etc. The first workshop involved the building of three prototypes for the Innovation Crisis Exhibition with the aim of potentially improving the existing design of the camp cabins, using materials readily available to the Roms craftsmen. The second workshop was to build a pavilion with local re-used building materials as a community space for a local Roms camp. For each workshop, the Roms participants were paid a legal salary with the aim of helping them to integrate into the French administrative process.

PROJECTS Urban

BLAU Urban design and co-design As an architectural assistant with BLAU, I was involved in the co-conception of the regeneration master plan with the inhabitants of Baudimont (Arras, France) and the team of BLAU. An architectural residency was held for 3 months. Three times a week volunteers and interested residents designed and produced the funiture for their future community space, which was to serve as a hub for the discussion and development of future regeneration plans, including the co-conception master plan itself. After 3.5 years the inhabitants presented the final regeneration master plan to the mayor of the city, the partners and the other residents. BLAU architects and urbanists approach urban planning and design through consultation with local residents; a methodology which greatly influences the conceptual design. I worked on 3 urban design plans: the regeneration of a residential area, the development of a proposed commercial area, and the development of a proposed residential area in a rural town. I also had the opportunity to work on various feasibility studies.

Urban scenography As a member of L’Atelier Volant collective, we were commissioned for the conception and build of urban scenography to present the proposals for a new landscape design project in Paris la Défense. In the regeneration of Paris la Défense, the landscape designer, Empreinte Paysagiste Office, was commissioned to create an innovative way to present the proposals, instead of using traditional boarding around the construction site, which gives an artist’s impression of the proposed designs. L’Atelier Volant’s response was to create an interactive module which included all the key information and images of the regeneration project. Each board had windows showing the current view alongside a picture of the conceptual view proposed by the landscape designer.

HomeSquare Following the hands-on methodology of the research work for my MA in Sociology and Urban Anthropology, I volunteered for Homebaked CLT and participated in building HomeSquare, a reimagined community space which had lain abandoned for generations. The work included the design of the space, the construction of a wooden pavilion designed by the French Architect Nicolas Henninger, and the development of the garden with the help of Andrea Ku, local landscape designer. I later designed a booklet which tracks the project from beginning to end, printed with a RISO printer.

The Ralla Ecological Garden - ongoing Co-director of The Ralla Ecological Garden CIC. The community business was incorporated in June 2018 by local residents with the purpose of taking guardianship of around 6 acres of council-owned land in Kirkdale, which has lain abandoned for decades and which has become a beautiful natural oasis bordering the industrial docklands. In 2016, the Mayor of Liverpool described this land in the press as the “hidden jewelâ€? of the North and declared that a maintained park was to be created on the site. However, the plans came to nothing. The aim of the CIC is to access the necessary external funding to transform this land into a financially sustainable community asset: a public garden, cafĂŠ and events space with a variety of community uses. The ethos of the ecological garden concept itself is to promote naturalistic methods of mantenance of a community green space which will support and promote a broad range of flora and fauna. The community business aims to foster much greater community spirit in a very deprived area of the city. The scheme would promote the physical health and mental wellbeing of residents through being surrounded by nature, growing food and having a wide range of healthy activities in a beautiful community green space. This project aims to be a catalyst for the wider regeneration of Kirkdale.

1€ symbolique A 1 month project in collaboration with Zerm collective and MAV (Maison de l’architecture et de la Ville) to promote the market of repurposed/re-used materials for use in architecture and other construction projects. During this month, we collected different materials from building sites from the city of Lille and exhibited them in the windows of the MAV gallery. The exhibition was presented to coincide with the national tour of the French exhibition «Matière grise», concentrating on the repurposing and re-use of construction materials. The final act of the project was to sell all the collected materials at a symbolic cost of 1 euro.
