How Long to Cook NY Strip Steak

How long it takes to cook a New York strip steak depends on two things: what appliance you're using to cook it and what level of doneness you prefer.

Before putting your steak in the oven, pan-sear it for 2 minutes on each side. After searing, cook your steak in the oven at 400°F for:

1-2 minutes for rare

2-3 minutes for medium-rare

3-5 minutes for medium

4-7 minutes for medium-well

5-8 minutes for well done

Rare: 6-7 minutes over high heat

Medium-rare: 7-8 minutes over high heat

Medium: 9-11 minutes over high heat

Medium-well: 12-14 minutes over high heat

Well done: 14-16 minutes over high heat


