Welcome to the second issue of My Little Black Book. I would like to thank everyone who supported me with my first issue, especially Gilbert from the O.P. and Super Dave. This is the official Launch Issue!!! It was really hard to sell my dream to them just by showing the design on my laptop. I had to show them I really know what I’m doing. The first issue of the L.B.B. was a pain to get out. I had some unforeseen printer issues . One of which I’m still taking to small claims. Another big change this month, is the addition of our new Marketing Director, James Gamez. I’m not into the business of creating controversy. So I was up front and asked why did he call me because of his affiliation with another publication. I assumed he was here to try and steal some trade secrets or that he was in awe that I designed everything in My Little Black Book. After a few meetings, he made it clear he was no longer a part of the other publication. So with my no-contest clause, of the employee contract signed. He became the newest member of the My Little Black Book Family. Another individual that merged into my publication is Paul Landerman. He is a scholar, a poet, a ‘Daddy’, and a friend who has a doctorate in Education and published writer. Which means, I will have much needed help with my bad grammar. He will write the Nightcap Column every month on different interesting topics.

Thank you once again for reading and see you next month. Next issue, the last component of the El Paso section will be added turning the L.B.B. into a full EL Paso LGBT guide. Rickey Turner Editor-in-Chief/ Publisher rickey@mlbbp.com

Enough is Enough By: James Gamez •

It has not been easy for the LGBT community in El Paso lately. In yet another hate filled attack, two men jumped and beat up Emelio Moreno, 23 outside a sports bar alley in the Northeast this past January. Witnesses allegedly heard the two men yelling gay slurs at Moreno while beating him and punching him in the face, then robbing him. The El Paso Police Department confirmed it arrested Fernando Pacheco-Martinez, 23 and Arturo Contreras, 24 no longer than a week and a half after the beating took place. Both who allegedly committed a hate crime against Moreno, were booked into the county jail.

“My heart obviously goes out to the young man and his family. My concern is that we are going to see an increase in gay-bashing and hate crimes because of the hateful rhetoric that we have seen coming from Contreras individuals like Tom Brown and others,” said County Judge Veronica Escobar. In a similar statement El Paso City Council Representative Susie Byrd agreed. “Gay bashing has become too frequent and too loud in our community, and unfortunately, not enough people, gay or straight, are standing up to say, Enough,” she said. In an all too familiar platform, both are referring to the man behind the re-call election, Pastor Tom Brown. He and his followers are determined to recall Representatives Susie Byrd, Steve Ortega and Mayor John Cook. Cook broke a tie that shot down a voter-initiative: to not allow same-sex couples city health benefits. The “family values” initiative was strangely worded and alluded to the public thinking it was voting for family values.Mayor Cook has since filed a lawsuit to stop the re-call election, because the signatures collected for the re-call were gathered in churches, breaking Texas State Law. The frustration with another hate crime and the lingering recall election has become evident. “Tom Brown is a bully and a bigot. Unfortunately, he has a microphone and people willing to listen,” said Rep. Byrd. He since has been mum though, in a recent airing of ABC NEWS XTRA, Brown declined to be a guest with the mayor to discuss the re-call. “I’m glad the mayor came here and stood up like a man, whether you agree with him or not,” said a viewer. “I think he is someone who is pushing an agenda to further some very narrow-minded views. He is using religion and narrow aspects of the Bible to create

fear of and hatred for a group of people. That’s not Christian! He is judgmental and has used his pulpit to inspire anger, fear and hatred instead of the love that Christianity teaches we should focus on,” said the Judge Escobar. When asked if they think this is hurting El Paso’s image, both Byrd and Escobar agreed. “We can all do a better job of improving our image when it comes to gay rights. I think it’s not only cost us tourism dollars, but it’s cost us our self-esteem. That’s a very costly loss,” said Escobar. “Yes. I know for a fact that this has cost us business opportunity and that some are reluctant to travel here,” said Byrd. As of deadline, there have been no judgments on whether the city will have a re-call election slated for April 14th. If the re-call election does happen, city and county election officials think it could cost between $300,000 to 1.4 million dollars, which is all incurred by the taxpayers. “We need to get through this recall mess by sending a strong message that we don’t tolerate discrimination. Then we need to work on passing an anti-discrimination policy in our city charter that is approved by the voters that includes gay, lesbians and bisexuals as a protected class,” said Rep. Byrd.

By : Randy Myers Moses is not afraid to turn conventional on its ear. In his new album, Predictions, he sets his sights on pushing buttons and changing minds. The first single off the record, “I’m Your Man”, features pop sensation XELLE. Driven by a dirty synth sound, a heavy beat, and Moses’ unique voice and harmonies, it’s destined to become a dance floor staple. The album features ten songs that whisk listeners on a journey through the inner world of Moses and his multiple layers of personality. It draws inspiration from 80’s bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Erasure, however its message is completely Moses’ own with much of it stemming from his arrival in New York. “It was tough starting over in a new city with no money and no friends,” recounts Moses. “But what’s great about New York is it’s a city of artists facing similar struggles and so we were able to build our own community.” Moses’ big break came when he met record producer Zach Adam who helped him create the ambitious album. Says Adam of Moses, “When I first met him, I was impressed by his talent and charisma. His artistry is unconventional yet his look is commercial.” Together, they are hoping that rare combination – along with Moses’ pop oriented sounds, driving beat and strong message - will propel the out artist into mainstream. And why not? Moses is one superstud who deserves to be a superstar. The idea of freedom seems to be an underlying theme in much of your music. I grew up in Israel in a strict family with stringent expectations. My dream was to be an entertainer but when I told my parents, they literally laughed at me and said “No, really. What do you want to do for a living?” They hoped I would become a lawyer or a doctor.

10

How did you break free from their demands? It wasn’t until I moved to NYC that I was finally able to break the chains and become my own person, creatively and sexually. The wheels of freedom were set in motion as soon as I took the first step to explore, discover and define myself as a man on my own terms. That’s what your new song, “I’m Your Man”, is all about. Yes, it’s about playing with standard conceptions of what a real man should be. Is it correct to assume the music video was inspired by George Michael’s, “Freedom”? The video is being compared to the ‘Freedom’ video, which is humbling and flattering, but in all honesty, it was not something we ever discussed or planned to do. It just sort of happened that way. George Michael is an amazing artist with an equally amazing career, so I’m fine with people making that comparison. But is George Michael a role model for gay men? I can’t really say. He is definitely a role model for me as a performer. The ladies in your video aren’t ladies at all… some are actually the gender-bending girl group XElle. We have a wide variety of personalities from the NYC nightlife world represented in the video. Our aim was to present something less to do with gender bending, more to do with bending the definition of gender.

WHITE PARTY

“It was the start of a fun new career that mixes work with play!”

“I happened to walking around West Hollywood with a friend when we ran into Randy on the street. My friend and Randy started kidding about me being in his films. I said I might be interested. Randy asked me to take off my shirt right then and there. We were in the middle of the street with tons of shoppers around. But I whipped it off and Randy offered me the job.”

He says he likely wouldn’t have approached Randy Blue himself. It all came about at a chance encounter.

With a body like his – plus, the fact that he is one of Randy Blue’s most popular film stars - you wouldn’t think he’d have inhibitions. But he says it took him some time to build up the courage to shoot his first film. “I thought about it for a while. It was something I always wanted to do but never thought I actually could go through with it.”

On location, it didn’t take much coaxing for Travis to strip down to his itsybitsy bikini. “I used to be kinda shy,” he admits, “but I have no inhibitions now.”

When we asked Travis James where he would like to be shot for his latest photo spread, he suggested poolside. “It’s been such a long winter,” he said. “I’m ready for sun!”

What do you like best about L.A.? I really like all the opportunities there are in Los Angeles. There are so many things to do and experience here that you can’t do anywhere else.

Are you a native Los Angelino? I was born in Atlanta, GA. But I grew up in Southern California.

You sure wear a bikini well! I usually prefer a square cut, or nothing at all. There just aren’t enough nude beaches where I live.

Do you tan well? I tan fairly well. I usually prefer to get a base tan indoors before I tan outside.

What kind of protection do you use when you are out frolicking in the sun? I like to us Coppertone spray-on. It also works well as lube if you’re in a pinch.

RANDYBLUE.COM EXCLUSIVE

What are you most looking forward to this summer? Probably traveling. I love to travel, and hope to take a few trips this summer. Maybe attend a few gay pride festivals.

Do you prefer pool or beach? I really like both. I grew up by the beach and I love surfing and beach volleyball. I also enjoy lounging by the pool with friends or at a hot naked pool party.

Realize who they are now and don’t spread yourself thin on the fakes invest yourself in those real friends and they will last a lifetime.

Don’t expect too much from others. Expectations you seem to be investing in others knowing they will let you down. Then the pity party starts. We all like something to talk about at the bar and the sympathetic ear you “expect” friends to always have for your troubles. I suggest before that sympathetic friend finds you pathetic you should invest expectations a little more wisely.

Nikko.... Renee... Tequila? It doesn’t matter by which name you call him. He still has a presence in the El Paso Gay Nightlife Scene, which includes his name plastered all over most club promotions. With his Birthday at the end of the month. His birthday party is amongst one of the most advertised in the El Paso LGBT community. I sat down with him to find about more about.... Who is Nikko? My first question is for those of our readers that don’t already know who you are. What exactly do you do? Everything!! I run all the Drag and Special Events @ The O.P. …. I have a PhD in fierceness and so that’s what I teach. This is my 10th year anniversary working for the bars. How did you get into this profession? It’s a funny story when I was 19. Eric Andrews asked me to host his benefit show because he didn’t want anyone else to host it. So I did. It was a success. The next day one of the bar owners offered me the job and the rest is ‘drag fierce’ history. If you could give yourself a title, what would it be? H.B.I.C. --- Head Bitch in Charge LOL. You’re having your 29th Birthday Celebration. Well, Gilbert , the owner of the O.P., said it’s your 50th birthday. Looking at the performer lineup, how did you get all these top notch performers to come to El Paso for your B’day Celebration. I have worked all over the country. I have established genuine friendships with everyone that is on my flyer. What can I say? ….. People just love the Texas Wolf, especially ‘Trannies’ I don’t know if there is some underlying or unspoken issue with the performers here. So I have to ask, why does it seem like there is a divide between of the EL Paso performers. I mean between the Pride Square and the O.P. queens. In all fairness, Gays and especially ‘Drag Gays’, love a good scandal or two. Also, to be quite honest, nobody wants to see the Partridge Family. Scandal sells. Well....At least my scandals do. I can speak for anyone else. Just myself and my shows. If there was something in your past you could change or do different. What would it be? Absolutely Nothing. It is because of my past that I am who I am. I am happy with the person I’ve become. Where do you see yourself in the future? Making Gilbert’s (aka Cherry Forever) death look like an accident. Then finding a secret Will, leaving me the entire bar. Is there anything else, you would like to say to our readers? Without all of you. This, Drag, shows and Nikko don’t exist. Because of you... Me and all the performers are able to do exactly what we love. WITHOUT THE FANS WE ARE NOTHING.....Thank-you El Paso.

El Paso O u & About t

Nightcap Senior Gays by: Paul W Landerman

Among the many gays with whom I am acquainted, a fair proportion are men of a certain age, willing to admit their scars and battle wounds and travels and trials, men who are no longer experiencing the misfortunes of “gay puberty” or going through the growing pains of coming out, establishing a gay identity, risking career moves or family relationships, but who have become well established within their own psyche as stable, mature, focused, forward-thinking, and calm. These are men who have become future-oriented, rather than mired in the minutiae of today’s gossip, drama, and games, men who have accomplished a great deal in their lives and who, for all outward appearances, may not look to the “normal” or hetero world as specifically gay, but men of maturity and purpose. Within these lives there are also secrets, nothing diabolical, but in every life there are concerns that we all share: security, safety, relationships, family, stability, health, companionship. In most of the men I know, who have been willing to divulge their secrets, the concerns seem to revolve around the same issues: who will be with me when I need help? Where can I look for support when I become unable to care for myself? What relationships may be depended on for my later life? In every case, the problem of arithmetic surfaces: in North America, with an estimated 10% of the population identifying as gay, the numbers begin to narrow very quickly, especially as specific age groups are identified. For men over the age of 45, let’s say, there are far fewer choices for stable partners than at an earlier age, say college age or among those just establishing careers, as an example. Men over 55 have an even more difficult time, as circumstances change, health needs and concerns change and possibly become more acute, and issues such as partnerships, companionships, housing arrangements, financial stability, and long-term care begin to emerge as concerns. Recently in a conversation with my cousin Mario, the editor-in-chief of the largest gay magazine in Montreal, when he asked me if I am afraid of growing old and alone as a gay man, of course the obvious answer was affirmative: I think also for most gay men who may have ever had a sober moment to contemplate what life may be like post-45, those same concerns surface at least once in a while.

22

In addition, I have the added joy of dealing with children and

grandchildren; having come out after age 45 , and after a divorce, I have the blessing of children in my life who have now begun to replicate themselves, and so the question of “how do I deal with my partner vis-àvis my grandchildren” has become a front-and-center question. While I have a pretty normal relationship with my partner, and we enjoy each other enormously, how does that translate to a run-of-the-mill relationship with little children? Sorry, I don’t have that answer yet, but I am sure we are smart enough to figure it out sooner or later. Finally, it seems simple enough to disburden myself of all of those hetero relationships, but I am also certain there is a huge psychic cost to doing so; we live in a hetero-dominant world, and so we have to learn to deal with all of that stuff. Those Chevy truck and Budweiser commercials during the Super Bowl were not designed for you and me, and even though we may be devoted to Madonna and her spectacular half-time show, we also know that the men in the audience across America were drooling over something other than her talent, even while the gays were admiring her showmanship and creativity. So the result may then be, while we are happy in our gay enclaves at the present, some day, maybe even someday soon for the gay men over 45, learning to deal in a whole new way with the world and its burdens/expectations may become a front-burner issue.
