There’s nothing quite like enjoying that familiar comfort food… it’s timeless! But, going home to experience those seasonings and sentiments isn’t always possible. Luckily, there’s still another place you can go to find a taste of home when you want or need it — Old Dixie Café North. Old Dixie Café North is a cozy, welcoming restaurant with a large menu featuring all kinds of classic, homey items to tempt you, from pancakes, biscuits & gravy, and French toast to cheesesteaks, hamburgers, and paninis… and more! The restaurant also began serving dinner on November 1, so on weekdays from 3PM-9PM, you can even enjoy traditional and baked pastas, seafood dishes, and chicken, veal, and eggplant meals. For breakfast, Abby and I suggest you try any of the omelets on the menu. All of Old Dixie Café’s omelets are made using 3 eggs, then served with your choice of home fries, hash browns, grits, or oatmeal… you won’t leave hungry! We sampled the veggie omelet with cheese ($9.75), which is huge, packed with fresh onions, bright tomatoes, crisp green peppers, and sliced mushrooms. There’s plenty of mild white American cheese to complement the earthiness of the vegetables, as well as to add some salt to the dish. Abby is normally not a big fan of omelets, but after trying this one at Old Dixie Café, she says, “I would order this again, and even branch out to try some different fillings.” I have to add that before this dining review, I read some online reviews of Old Dixie Café, and noticed that a number of them complimented the restaurant’s hash browns. Of course, Abby and I had to try them, so we chose them as our side for the omelet… we recommend you try them too! The online reviewers were correct — the hash browns achieve the right balance of crispiness and fluffiness to delight your palate.

If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, then order the Combo Dixie Triple Decker Club ($9.75) — a gargantuan stack of turkey, ham and cheese on toast accompanied by French fries and coleslaw. Smothered in a traditional, creamy brown gravy, a mound of tender turkey is served atop thick mashed potatoes and a slice of white bread. This rustic dish immediately brought Abby back to homey dinners at her Grandmother’s house, and was her favorite plate of the day. It’s warm, filling, and the ultimate comfort food selection. When you take a bite, make sure to get each and every ingredient on your fork to enjoy the full flavor experience! Or, another option that you can’t go wrong with is a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato ($6.75). It oozes an abundance of cheese and boasts plenty of crispy bacon with slices of juicy red tomato. It’s a simple, straightforward choice that will please even the pickiest of eaters. For a taste of home that is sure to satisfy you, look no further than Old Dixie Café North! You’ll enjoy familiar, comforting flavors in a bright, friendly environment that’s reminiscent of sitting down to eat at your childhood dining room table.

For lunch, we ordered a few different things to sample. My personal favorite was the special house salad topped with buffalo chicken ($9.95). A generous number of deliciously crispy fried chicken strips, which are tossed in a mild buffalo sauce, top a classic house salad featuring juicy tomatoes, shredded carrots and radishes, fresh cucumbers, and yellow cheese. The salad is great because it’s not too heavy and is still a large enough portion with plenty of chicken to satisfy your hunger. Plus that buffalo sauce? Those of us, the strong ones, keep on fighting, keep on believing that the state of the world is only temporary, that we can beat this venom, but those who are weak, have succumbed to hopelessness. We are all weary. We are all worried. We are more suspicious, 60

less friendly, more irritable, and less willing to help our friends and neighbors, not because we don’t care, but because we only have so much left in reserve. These are hard times, unpredictable times that we are not prepared for, pummeled from every direction by problems with money, relationships, hardships and illness. But for now, all I can suggest is that we turn off the endless streaming of newscasts that bring horrific images into our homes, that we shelter our children from the evilness of some individuals, and reinforce to them our values, instilled in us from

better times, from earlier days, from those who wanted something better for their lives. It is the reason our country became great, and the reason we have to remain great. We can’t do it alone, but if we all ban together, if we all join forces, if we see what we can achieve when we are not divided, then we can also believe there is hope, because without hope, what do we have?
