From Evergreen Club to Crane Watch Club: A Classic Course with a Fresh Look One of the longest established golf clubs in Martin County, the former Evergreen Golf Club, now the new and improved Crane Watch Club, was a renowned golf course in the 1970s and 80s. But, over time the Evergreen Club deteriorated due to lack of proper maintenance and care, and was left to grow in and over itself. Thanks to Colin and Anne Dunwoody and their expert staff of experienced professionals, the neglected golf club has been completely revitalized and restored to its former glory with a new name, modern updates, and plans to elevate the club and golf course to even higher levels of eminence. Originally designed by experienced golf course architect Charlie Martin, the 18-hole, par 72 semi-private Crane Watch Club golf course offers not only a fun, yet challenging game, but also incredible views of Florida’s natural flora and fauna, especially sandhill cranes and other birds. The transformation from Evergreen to Crane Watch Club has been tremendous. When the Dunwoodys first bought the Evergreen Club property in December of 2019, they found that the course had “become weed infested, with large bare spots on the greens.” In response, the greens were sodded, irrigation system repaired/upgraded, and multiple green

complexes renovated. New tees were also installed, and Chris Thatcher was brought on to be the golf superintendent. Thatcher is very experienced in golf course maintenance, having previously worked as the superintendent at Frenchman’s Reserve Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens and at the Trump International Golf Club in Jupiter. Additionally, in January of this year, Rod Curl, Jr. joined the Crane Watch Club team as the Director of Golf. Rod is the son of PGA Tour golfer Rod Curl, Sr., who was the first full-blooded American Indian to win a PGA Tour event, so he has been both watching and playing golf from a young age. A knowledgeable and experienced golfer who has seen many a course, Rod Jr. has been working with the Dunwoodys, Thatcher, and other professionals to make the Crane Watch Club golf course better than ever. There is a 3-year plan underway to renovate more of the greens and complexes, add a bigger practice area, and enhance the driving range, among other improvements. Crane Watch Club has more than just golf… it has a restaurant and banquet facility, which was just completely redone, as well as a robust social club membership. As a semi-private club, Crane Watch’s golf and social clubs are open to members, member guests,

and the public. You don’t need to live in The Evergreen gated community to become a golf or social member, play a round of golf, or reserve the 150-guest banquet room. Since Crane Watch Club has been revitalized, community members have been amazed at its metamorphosis. Colin says, “The feedback has been very positive, with people saying that it’s getting better and better all the time.” The Dunwoodys, along with their skilled staff, have essentially turned back time to restore the golf course to what it once was, and have plans to improve it further. “It is the old Evergreen Club, but it is not the old Evergreen Club… it is Crane Watch Club. And Crane Watch Club is a new club with a new vision,” explains Colin.

We don’t have to try every variety of grape from the vineyard to know the pleasure of wine. Love and laughter, and fear and pain are universal currencies. We don’t have to do everything in order to be everything…while we are alive we always contain a future of multifarious possibility. So, let’s be kind to the people in our own existence. Let’s occasionally look up from the spot in which we are, because,

wherever we happen to be standing, the sky above goes on forever.” We should each take away our own interpretation of his words. For me, I am going to look around and notice everything that I have taken for granted. That I can see. That I have health. That I love my family and they love me. That I am not hungry or homeless. That I have friends who care about me. For what it’s worth, I think that’s what matters. For you, it may be that and more. I hope you stop searching for forks in the road and take the path in front of you.
