Bigger is not Always Better
I received a phone call the other day from a prospective client. She was concerned because of the lack of attention she was receiving from her Financial Advisor. I asked her a few questions and realized why this was happening. It made me think that her situation was no different than many of you who might be reading this. Her account was at one of the major brokerage firms we all know. The lack of attention she was getting was not her fault. It happens quite often at the major brokerage firms and for good reason. Brokerage firms set minimum asset requirements on their advisors for them to be compensated. The advisor in this relationship was not compensated because the relationship size was less than $250,000. These firms set minimum relationship sizes on their accounts and if that minimum is not met then the client is usually directed to a call center where they may speak to a different person on any given day. To me this by Jay Chapman, CFP® does not seem like good service. After all, even though your account size may be smaller, you are still paying a fee to that firm to advise you.
