Fresh start Sarah Hooley sheds light on how to inject style into your home this spring...

Tempting slate wallpaper from Next

■ SPRING heralds a new start to the year and if you’re looking to update your home, fear not, as this season’s hottest design trends have now arrived. Just like the high street, interior decor trends change with the beginning of each season and if you want to inject some style into your home, taking a trip to your local DIY and furnishing stores, or getting the decorators in, is a must. Starting inside the home, designers are finally rebelling against the strict rules and stark, cold whites of minimalism and are instead brightening up our lives with eclectic combinations, bold colours and interesting textures. Tipped by industry insiders to be the key look for 2008, it’s easy to achieve and from using a splash of bright paint to highlight one feature wall,

combining coarse rugs with opulent chandeliers, to using larger than life stencils or murals to create a real “wow” factor, imagination is your only limit. Pattern power is also predicted to be a hit within the home and whether it’s just a couple of stylish accessories and cushions decorated with intricate motifs to large Jacquard patterns on chairs or wallpaper, this stylish trend lends itself to most rooms but just remember that it’s best kept in moderation. Going ‘green’ is also an increasingly popular trend, and with many designers becoming more and more conscious of environmental issues, you can expect an even bigger shift towards eco-friendly ideas. An intensifying theme throughout our lives, it’s not so much about

buying particular products, but more about attitudes and choosing companies that echo environmental issues by using recyclable or sustainable products. As for colours, soft, shimmering greys, as well as fruity lime yellows, kiwis and tangerines are expected to be some of the most popular choices to adorn walls, while warm reds and blues also look set to remain firm favourites. What’s more, thanks to this season’s penchant for combining the weird and the wonderful, homeowners looking to update their house with some new furniture will find an assortment of materials ranging from soft and chic leather, to traditional solid woods and even sumptuous suedes. So remember, for a stylish home this spring and summer tear up that rule book - as anything and everything goes.

â– WITH fashions constantly changing, make sure you don't leave your fire surround in the dark ages by creating a fresh focal point this spring. Traditionally the heart of the home, a fireplace is a simple but effective way of bringing warmth and a focal point to a room. Fashions have evolved greatly over recent years and now, whether it's a contemporary ultra modern flat fire you're after, or a Victorian style cast iron centre piece for your room, there are a whole range for you to choose from. Most people will opt for Living Flame fires, this realistic fire effect is highly popular in modern houses and city apartments, as they give off heat and provide a view of a 'real fire.' You can choose from deep red glowing coals, dark coals, logs for a more conventional look, or alternatively, there are modern styles such as crushed crystal and pebbles. More contemporary fireplaces often have a metallic finish. Choose from bronze, brushed steel and chrome for that fabulous designer look. Surrounds and mantelpieces add an important and dominating final touch and there are all kinds

of styles and varieties available to suit modern and traditional decor. Cast iron Victorian styles are well liked but wooden surrounds are seeing a current surge in popularity in light spring/summer shades such as pine and beech. One of the most fashionable current designs is a simple solid wooden mantel with a chunky top shelf. Plus light stone style surrounds are also proving to be a hit if you have the space. Even if you don't have the facilities for a fire then you can still create an excellent focal point with a fire surround and hearth then create your own centre. You can use an array of candles still giving you the feel of a fire, although do ensure they aren't going to be knocked over, especially if you have children or pets. You could also use an arrangement of flowers, with spring on its way, this is a perfect

way to refresh your home as well as creating a beautiful focal point. Plus you can get fire bowls, which you can put in different areas of your room or even in the middle of your fire surround maybe with some pebbles. The choice currently available is excellent and you can benefit from a blend of the latest technology and the best in classic or contemporary design. There's something to suit all tastes and styles, and the combination of smooth warmth and the transfixing effect of the flames is perfect for soothing away the stresses of a busy day.

Colour explosion Imogen Sawyer at Lane End Nursery explains what we should expect to see in our gardens this spring... ■ APRIL is the month when plants really seem to shake off the winter and burst out into fresh growth. New shoots appear on trees and shrubs, some green but some spectacular colours of orange, red, pink or yellow. Acer Palmatum hybrids have a wonderful colour range with the new shoots gradually changing as they open to the full sized leaves. Acer Brilliantissimum pictured left) has shrimp pink shoots which turn to yellow then green leaves. It is a small tree with a rounded dome shaped canopy and fits neatly into smaller gardens. Flame, is covered in bright red new shoots for several weeks. A sharp frost will damage the shoots and turn them brown, but the plant soon recovers and puts out new growth once the weather warms up again. Pieris are shade tolerant so try to plant them under a tree canopy which will help shelter them from the worst of the cold. Other shrubs are busy producing flowers rather than new shoots. Many Viburnums are spring flowering, producing heads of pinkwhite strongly scented flowers. They are also good for a shady spot so tuck one away in a gloomy corner and enjoy the scent in the whole of the rest of your garden.

Viburnum Plicatum Maresii (pictured above) has large heads of creamy white scented flowers in spring and good autumn colour. The branches grow naturally in layers on a wide spreading plant so this one needs more space. Many trees are in blossom particularly apples, pears, crab apples and cherries. Most are suitable for small gardens and are useful as well as beautiful. If you are tempted to plant a tree now, remember that it will need regular watering over the summer even if we get the same sort of ‘summer’ as last year! If you choose an ornamental cherry, try to choose one with good autumn leaf colour to provide two seasons of interest, or one with a dark purple leaf to contrast with the white or pink blossom in spring. Crab apples have blossom, autumn colour and fruit. Many are grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock making them suitable for the smallest garden or patio pot.

(Pictured above) is Malus Royalty with very dark pink blossom followed by purple foliage and deep pink fruit in autumn. There is still time to plant summer flowering bulbs such as Lilies, Camassias and Galtonias. Some of the dwarf pot varieties are not scented so plant Asiatic Lilies for perfumed summer evenings. They usually need staking but it is a small price to pay in order to have such beautiful plants. Watch out for bright red lily beetles on the plants once the weather warms up. Kill the adult beetles immediately before they have time to lay eggs on your plants. The eggs hatch into larvae that munch away at your lilies until there is hardly anything left.

Don’t bother with a spray or chemical. We find that the heel of a Wellington boot to be 100% effective! Plant your hanging baskets and pots now with plugs or starter plants but only if you can keep them frost free in the greenhouse. The small plants grow on nicely and by mid May, the basket will have filled out and be starting to trail over the edges. If you don’t have a warm spot, wait until May when the night time frosts have gone. You’ll then be able to plant your basket up and put it straight outdoors.
