Colourful cocktails and sand between my toes!

As I sit writing this, it’s pouring outside my window, Prague is at risk of flooding, and the first barbeque of the year was celebrated under a leaky tarp. But as the saying goes, “Hard times can’t last forever.” I’ll keep faith and continue to believe in a real Indian summer after what we might call a harsh winter, to say the least. A quick Google search on the subject reveals that the myth that a cold winter will be followed by a warm summer is as much an urban legend as the Swedish bikini team. But this year, I’ve decided to believe in the Swedish summer and become a tourist in my own city. I always leave Stockholm when it’s at its most beautiful. Fittingly, we have dedicated this issue to both the Stockholmers who have chosen to stay home and the tourists here for the first time who might need a little guidance. We list the local watering holes and sweet spots that fill our beloved Sofo. This summer, I’m going to eat breakfast at Pom & Flora, run my toes through the sand on the artificial beach at Thaibåten, stuff myself with AH’s obnoxiously delicious homemade ice cream, go to free concerts in Vitabergsparken park, reserve the chef’s table at the newly opened restaurant Nytorget 6 and watch the sun go down from Trädgården nightclub below Skanstullsbron bridge. Who knows what will happen, but what is certain is that the area is now putting its best foot forward, and every park and street corner are packed with people and atmosphere. Dance and music at Vitabergsparken

ip hop, ballet and opera are just a few of the experiences you can have in Vitabergsparken park during a month-long celebration of dance and concerts sponsored by Parkteatern (Park Theatre). The month will be kicked off on 14 August with the Kwaii music project, a collaboration between Riksteatern (National Theatre Company) and Folkets Hus och Parker (People’s Parks and Community Centres). The project features performances by South African hip hop artists along with their Swedish counterparts such as Adam Tensta, Chords, Cleo, Dirty Jens, Kristian Amaro and Mofeta & Jerre. “KWAII is an incredibly exciting project during which 22 artists will perform on stage at the same time. We always try to find a mix of returning favourites and new talent, and this year our biggest concerts will also be in Vitabergsparken,” says Linda Zachrisson, artistic manager for Parkteatern’s dance and concert month. Ice Ice Baby

AH Glassbar ice cream parlour is just a little hole in the wall with space for a handful of standing clients at a time. Be your own pottery maker

Gardener or not, everyone can now at least make their own pottery. This simple contraption allows you to quickly transform paper into functional and personal pots. If you use plain, untreated newsprint, you can just put the whole pot in the ground when it comes time for planting. It only takes a week for it to deteriorate. If you’d rather, you can use beautiful, patterned paper to easily create a unique window planter with a DIY feel. Brewed with love

weden’s interest in quality coffee has grown over the last several years. Now it’s not enough to make a regular latte or cappuccino, it should also be home roasted, freshly ground, organic, and if we really want to be serious, the beans should have passed through some foreign animal’s digestive system. An example of people who are really passionate about their coffee are behind the café concept Koppi. They just opened up their first café in Sofo. The new location is wall-to-wall with jeans purveyor Denim Deamon. With Koppi as a new neighbour to the flagship store, fresh coffee is always at hand for the lucky staff. Sofo’s editorial team attended the opening ceremony, where we were served steaming hot coffee and specialty brewed beer, which, of course, had a touch of coffee. Ann Lunell, one of the founders of the café concept, has won several barista competitions, and her interest in the Swedes’ beloved beverage has only grown the more she learns. How is a cup of coffee best experienced Koppi style? “We want to show that coffee can be wonderful in its simplicity. Like wine, various kinds of coffee have different characteristics depending on terroir and microclimate, subspecies, processing method and so on. Therefore, we encourage our guests to try different kinds of coffees and even different brewing methods. What we find most interesting is how much of a difference in taste there can be between different subspecies, growing techniques and regions – knowledge that we love to share with our customers.” You have even made a beer flavoured with coffee? “Yes, three years ago we started working with Danish brewer Mikkeller, which resulted in the world’s first India Pale Ale with coffee, released in January 2011. Since then we have brewed a number of new beers together and more are to come!”

For the little artists Donald Duck and Spiderman are all very well and good, but we in the newsroom have long wondered why there aren’t prettier and perhaps a little more inspiring colouring books for kids. At last, we have found what we are looking for with the lovely Zoo series, which are attractive to big and little artists alike. Just let all the colours from the rainbow ﬂow. hen ClaesMikael Svensson was seven, his parents gave him a cloth bag filled with old clothes. They bought a loom from the turn of the century, and the bag of clothes wass part of the deal. They were his to experiment with. That bag marked the start of a creative approach that has subsequently developed around bodily formation, handicraft and aging.. “I think that my parents realized that I was interested in such things, just sitting there and tinkering,” ClaesMikael says. “I had a dollhouse when I was little, but the little cloth figures who lived there had to move out almost every week because it was being ‘renovated’ – my little brother had to drive the moving van so that he could be involved – and then I sat and fiddled and redid everything.” Today ClaesMikael is studying costume design at the Stockholm m Academy of Dramatic Arts (Stockholms dramatiska högskola). The road to costume design has taken him through the worlds of fashion, advertising, and textiles. It is in the latter category that he feels most at home: “What I’m doing in my studies is much different from what I did previously, for example all we do is design costumes. Then you have to collaborate with the various departments... I’m really bad d at collaboration,” he says with a laugh. His artistic inspiration most often comes from his background growing up in Huluboda in Småland in southern Sweden. Inspiration that has taken him a long way in his career. For example the Stockholm County Museum (Stockholms Läns museum) is currently exhibiting a corset made of birch bark, called Resistance (Motstånd). The material comes from the barn at his parents’ home. There he found bags of bark that had been used for insulation and had been removed when the family redid the roof several years before. His parents thought it would make good kindling. But ClaesMikael had other ideas. “I had to really learn about the material and how to work with it. When I got it, it was completely dry, it just crumbled, and so I had to soak it several times, change the water ... it’s an entire process. Eventually I was able to bend it.” The inspiration for his other piece 47 m² + balcony also came from his own surroundings, his living situation in Stockholm. ClaesMikael and his live-in partner were forced to leave the flat they were living in at the time and weren’t sure where they were going to go. ClaesMikael’s interpretation of the experience was an embroidered floor plan in the dimensions of the flat – 47 square meters. He and a few friends embroidered it by hand. How long did it take you? “A week and a half, I think. We had a pretty big living room at the time, so I removed all the furniture and just sat there and worked hunched over. I was totally destroyed afterwards, it was insane!” 47 m² + balcony was eventually part of “In praise of slowness” (Långsamhetens lov), an embroidery exhibition at Södertälje konsthall, a local art gallery. ClaesMikael and his partner Alexander, along with their cat Gnucci, now live in Sofo. “I like it here. This is the neighbourhood where I spent a lot of time when I first came to Stockholm. Here I can be myself.” On one of the walls in the flat is a large oil painting that was a 20th birthday present from fellow artist Sara-Vide Ericson. She came to Huluboda during the summer with an artist collective she started on a farm near ClaesMikael’s childhood home. They became friends, and it was because of her that he eventually moved to Stockholm and began to seriously concentrate on his creative work. “When I was 18, I didn’t know what direction I wanted to go in, and she said to me ‘maybe you can own a gallery!’ And I thought no, not a gallery owner, I want to be a creator!” Since then, that desire has only grown. In response to the question about what he wants to do in the future, ClaesMikael has no doubts: “If I could have my way and the right opportunity came along, I would work as a textile designer. And just concentrate on my own work”.

ive years ago, Mårten, Olle and Mats first opened the doors to the haberdashery at Kocksgatan 17. They wanted to bridge the gap they saw between Södermalm’s youth shops and the classic men’s outfitters. Today, they’ve renovated the shop, opened a second one and changed their name to Haberdash, although the space on Kocksgatan is still the core of their business. When the two brothers and their childhood friend opened the store five years ago, there were many who didn’t believe it would take off. Without any money left over for marketing, they just unlocked the doors one morning in February 2008. Half of the shop was stocked with clothing from brands such as Hope and Our Legacy. The other half was filled with art. With their signature blend of quality and conscientiousness, they’ve since won over the residents of Södermalm. “At the beginning people thought we were strange when we asked where the clothes were from and how they were made during our buying meetings. No one had asked such questions before. Today it’s become mainstream, everyone does it,” Olle says. He explains how during all of these continual “tiny battles” they never stopped asking where and how goods were produced. It’s just as important for them to like the people behind the brand as it is for the clothes to be durable.

“We skip a lot of embellishment in favour of simple, high quality products. We want garments that are going to last and help the customer build a functional, modern and timeless wardrobe,” Mårten says.

Mårten, Olle and Mats carefully curate the selection in the shop and travel around the world to the largest menswear fairs. They buy footwear from manufacturers who specialise in shoes, and they take the same approach to all of their product categories. If a particular item is trendy and being knocked oﬀ, they want the piece from the manufacturer who made it ﬁrst. That way they have the best product at the right price.

“We aren’t snobby, but we have a concept that we stick to. We want people to know why our clothes cost what they do and what they get for the money. The products are worth their price,” Olle explains.

The clothes should be classics, but that doesn’t have to mean old fashioned. Dr. Martens and Vans are as much classics as a pair of English brogues from Church’s. Before they started the store, they travelled to the fashion trade fair in Copenhagen to find their brands. They stayed in a dingy hotel in Malmö because they couldn’t afford anything else. They printed their business cards the same day they took the train to Denmark. “The stores we like the most in Copenhagen are a little bit off of Ströget, a little out of the way, the exact same feeling we have from the space on Kocksgatan. We want it to feel like you’ve stumbled across something special when you come to us, something your own,” Olle says. Today they don’t have any problem finding brands that want to sell in their shop, but before the store opened it was a different situation.

“At the fashion trade fair, we lied to Our Legacy that Hope had already said yes and vice versa. Like children lying to dad that mum has already said yes in order to get what you want,” Mats says with a laugh. A certain naivety and lack of business savvy proved to be a successful concept for the three guys. They explain that they wouldn’t have been willing to take a chance if they had realised the risks. Instead, they went with their gut. They don’t come from the fashion world and are still not particularly involved in it. Instead of checking out what their competitors are doing, they ﬁnd inspiration in other areas, such as the restaurant industry. Now they are celebrating their ﬁfth anniversary and are looking forward to spending more time in the recently renovated Sofo shop, but the concept and the people behind it are the same.

“Kocksgatan has never been as lively as it is right now! The great thing about the street is that Sofo has it’s own little ecosystem. We help each other, work together and borrow things from one another,” Mårten says. Besides the facelift at the Sofo shop, we can look forward to an update of their website and e-shop that are to be done in the autumn. My own treasure t

he Stockholm summer we’ve all been waiting for is ﬁnally here! Vitabergsparken, a popular park in Södermalm, has come alive in green lushness, the sun never sets and the breeze is warm. Dog owners like myself have been banished from Nytorget to make room for the families who now dare to venture outside. The pollen has begun its assault on those who have allergies. But we are willing to put up with the runny noses and swollen eyes, because this is the best time of year in Stockholm. Summer might be the only time of year the weather is decent enough to attract throngs of tourists. And even the most jaded, ironic hipster from Söder (read, me) can’t help but crack a smile. You can’t miss a single hour of sunlight, a barbeque, or God forbid turn down a single glass of rosé, regardless of the temperature. Above all, regardless of the temperature!

Stockholmers excel at performance anxiety. You might even take it as far as to say that it’s a deﬁning characteristic of residents of our city. The more things you have to do, the better! Your vacation should have been planned months ahead of time, the city is evacuated as people ﬂee for the countryside, or even better, the Riviera, and every waking moment must be spent outside. The few streaks of independent thinking, another requirement for Stockholm, disappear along with the last few spring blossoms in the park Bläcktornsparken. Despite all of this, there is nothing I appreciate more than being able to wander home in the bright Stockholm night on empty streets, sit at outdoor cafes for hours without a care for tomorrow, smell the scent of warm asphalt, listen to bewildered gulls cry and plop down on a little patch of grass and soak up the rays.

The Stockholm summer gives me a feeling that I have found a treasure that no one else knows about. All the stressed-out locals have left town, foreign languages echo through the streets, and with this comes a feeling that Stockholm belongs to me alone! It’s an incredibly beautiful, poetic city that inspires countless songs and that overwhelms you with its power. I am overtaken by a sense that anything can happen: new friendships, memorable experiences, and stories that will be told over and over again. fter f ft er raf few ew w years yea ears rss as a vegetarian, I’ve started eating meat again and a the only thing I really regret is that high-m high-minded idealism doesn’t taste better. They say that hunger is the best spice, and for someone like me who has long lived with an unrequited desire for umami, animal protein has never tasted better. Only once in the last several months did I experience culinary doubt, and it was right before I broke my herbivore fast with ox cheek. I was at a restaurant and the meat broke apart when I poked at it with a fork. It came apart in small threads in my mouth so I hardly needed to chew. I knew that was how it was supposed to be. It was good, but I was still a little surprised: that one of the most sought after experiences in the world of meat had a consistency that wasn’t too far oﬀ from the beef stew served in school cafeterias or for that matter, what I serve my cat. One might argue that it’s distinguished to pick up such an obscure body part such as a cheek, or to be open-minded to other serving instructions than bloody. I think, however, the real explanation as to why ox

cheek is such a delicacy is because it takes so much time to make – at least four hours, but preferably more. Pulled pork, a dish to which certain members of my social circle seem to have an almost religious aﬃnity, takes just as much time. And time is the saﬀron of the 21st century, worth its weight in gold. That may not be remarkable in and of itself, but what does seem to be increasingly common is the fact that people cook quite complicated dishes at home that are traditionally served in restaurants. Food is not alone when it comes to people taking the time to make things at home. If home brew and winemaking kits were previously something that teenagers bought at the hardware store before Midsummer’s Eve, today there is no one, at least in this part of town, who would bat an eye when they hear a phrase like “I brewed this beer myself.” Jakob Nielsen and Mikael Zetterberg, the founders of home brew shop Det lilla köksbryggeriet, started brewing their own beer when they were on paternity leave. On their website they write that brewing your own beer is “easier than changing a tyre, harder than buying beer (but more

fun) and about as difficult as baking bread.” The whole brewing process takes about four weeks from start to finish, but when all is said and done, you have enough to last awhile: four litres, around 11 33-centilitre bottles. They currently sell kits for those who want to try home brewing, but the website also has tips for those who want to buy their own malt and hops and try experimenting with recipes. Food and drink aren’t the only areas where you can experiment with recipes. Cosmetics is an area where concern about parabens and sulphates – two potentially cancer-causing substances that are often found in skin cremes and shampoo – has turned something as simple as face wash into a full-blown chemistry lesson. When I meet with others who are interested in skin care we always swap home remedies: coffee and honey as a facemask, olive oil with rosemary as lotion, rice wine and rose water as toner, castor oil for your cuticles, or apple cider vinegar as hair rinse. Just like on the home brewers’ forum, there are a plethora of online sources with advice on what to do with the contents of your pantry. Why is it so popular to become an expert at braising, brewing or making your own lipstick? It might be a little harsh to say that these geeky habits are a little nouveau riche – in knowledge rather than money. But maybe it’s also a sign of the times. When the selection available at stores becomes anxiety inducing rather than liberating, those who have the chance want to take a step back and try to learn these skills for themselves.
