The Sun, Moon + Star(s)

As October arrives, Halloween is already on the mind — we get consumed with decorating and planning for All Hallows’ Eve (honestly, who doesn’t?!). Culture has assured us that you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a little spook and treats, or a really, really good costume. Though we love playing dress up, we are adults with realistic budgets, so spending the big bucks (or even little bucks!) on something only to wear it once is definitely not high on our list of priorities (and with busy schedules, making something from scratch isn’t always an option). So you ask, what’s the solve? It’s simple! Reuse items in your own closet (gasp!), or invest in an item of clothing that can be used for a number of holidays or events, not just Halloween. Put a lot of focus on hair, makeup, and of course, attitude, and you’re sure to have a unique, memorable ensemble. Trust us!

We love couples' costumes, but what we love even more is group costumes! The vision? Out of this world — The sun, moon and star(s). Without further ado, here’s how we turned a few favorite dresses into unearthly costumes.

The Sun

Details: Zara dress (sold out), La Vie Parisienne locket $84, Momo's March bangle $188, patent leather t-strap Christian Louboutins, size 36.5 $154, MissElenious hoop earrings $50.

MAKEUP APPLICATION

What you need:

• Stila Stay All Day Foundation (in Hue)

• Becca Aqua Luminous Perfecting Concealer (in Light)

• Becca Backlight Filter Face Primer

• Stila Eyes Are The Window Shadow Palette (in Soul)

• Jouer Slim Crème Eyeliner (in Matte Black)

• Jouer Powder Highlighter (in Skinny Dip)

• Fine gold glitter

• Kevyn Aucoin Precision Brow Pencil (in Brunette)

• One set of individual lashes of your choice (plus lash glue)

• Kevyn Aucoin Essential Mascara (in Black)

• Stila Correct and Perfect All-In-One Color Correcting Palette

How to get the look:

1. To prep the skin, start with Becca Backlight Face Primer (to give skin a natural glow). 2. Then, add the foundation (to help the makeup stay on longer). 3. Apply eyeshadow (to create the smokey eye) — start by adding the dark shadow on the outer creases, bringing it into the crease. 4. Once you have the eyeshadow well blended, add the gold glitter dust on the inner crease (wet brush, then apply). Gently add the dust, do not blend. 5. Using the eyeliner, create a wingtip on the top of your eyelids (and smudge slightly). Continue to use the eyeliner inside the waterline of your eye, and smudge under your lash line. 6. Add the individual lashes, making your lashes as full as you’d like. Blend the faux lashes with your own by using mascara on top and bottom lashes. 7. Fill eyebrows in as needed. 8. Use the color correcting palette under your eyes (Salmon shade) and concealer as needed. 9. For some contour, use concealer on your cheekbones and forehead. 10. Next, apply highlighter on your cheekbones, tip of nose and brow bone. 11. Complete the look by using the gold glitter dust (same used for eyelids) for your lips — wet the brush and add extra gold glitter dust all over your lips to make them pop!

HAIR TUTORIAL

What you need:

• 1 ½ inch curling iron

• Bobby pins

• Sun hairpiece (you can find something similar at your local craft store, or easily make your own!)

• A brush and/or comb

• Hairspray

• Fine gold glitter

How to get the look:

1. Gather vertical sections all over your head and backcomb/tease for volume. 2. Curl your hair with a 1 ½ inch curling iron, alternating each curl (curling back, curling forward) for big vivacious fire-like tendrils of loose, curly locks. 3. Then, take 1 ½ inch sections of your hair and twist them back using bobby pins to secure. 4. Sprinkle gold glitter over the twists, and attach the sun hairpiece on the side of your head. 5. Lightly hairspray the entire look to finish.

Apply opalescent glitter dust and stars under eyes as desired (we opted to create a pattern that looked similar to shooting stars). 13. Using lash glue, apply one confetti star to your forehead, between your eyes.

HAIR TUTORIAL

What you need:

• Bobby pins

• Hairspray

• Fine silver glitter

• Silver star confetti

How to get the look:

1. Starting behind the ear, french braid your hair — only picking up new hair from the exterior of the braid. Continue to braid until you’ve completed the desired shape. 2. Using bobby pins, secure the braid to make a crown-like shape. 3. Sprinkle silver glitter over the entire look, and add silver star confetti in various spots for some extra sparkle. 4. Lightly hairspray the entire look to finish.

The Moon

Details: Trina Turk dress, size 4 $198, The Gilded Fox pink quartz necklace $125, The Gilded Fox crescent necklace $60, Shashi crescent earrings $75.

MAKEUP APPLICATION

What you need:

• Stila Stay All Day Foundation (in Hue)

• Vita Liberata Trystal Pressed Self Tanning Bronzing Minerals (in Sunkissed)

• Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter (in Pearl)

• Stila Convertible Color (in Gerbera)

• Becca Ombré Nudes Eye Palette (to create a cut crease)

• Stila Stay All Day Waterproof liquid Eyeliner (in Black)

• One pair of Ardell Faux Mink Lashes (plus lash glue)

• Kevyn Aucoin Essential Mascara (in Black)

• Kevyn Aucoin Precision Brow Pencil (in Brunette)

• White face paint (to create the moon shape)

• Fine opalescent glitter

How to get the look:

1. Begin by drawing a moon on the side of your cheek with a white or nude liner (optional). 2. Apply foundation on skin, avoiding the moon you've drawn. 3. Conceal blemishes using concealer. 4. Create cut crease on eyes (using Becca Ombré Nudes Eye Palette). Use the lightest color first on your lid, and darkest color to create the crease. Blend with a brush using mid-colors from the same palette. 5. Create sharp wingtip line on the top of your eyelids using the liquid liner. 6. Finish the eyes with false lashes and blending faux lashes with your own by using mascara on top and bottom lashes. 7. Fill in your moon outline using white face paint. 8. Decorate the moon. Get creative! We used rhinestones, silver foil paper, and white glitter. 9. Contour and bronze lightly using the Vita Liberate powder. 10. Add Stila Convertible Color on the apples of your cheeks. 11. Finish skin with Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter on cheekbones, bridge of nose, cupids bow, brow bone, and above brow arch. 12. Fill eyebrows in as needed. 13. Complete the look with lip pencil and lipstick. 14. Use silver foil paper on opposite side of the moon shape, and a few pieces on the moon to add the illusion of moon craters. 15. Add opalescent glitter randomly (eyes, cheeks, around the moon, etc.) for a little extra glam.

HAIR TUTORIAL

What you need:

• 1 ½ inch curling iron

• Bobby pins

• A brush and/or comb

Once each strand is curled, lightly brush it out to create a sweet, soft, classic Hollywood look. 4. Secure one side of your hair with two bobby pins. 5. Apply the pomade to the part, combing it out slightly from the roots. 6. Sprinkle silver glitter over the part to create depth and highlighting. 7. Lightly hairspray the entire look to finish.
