Dear Friend of LittleBigHelp It’s amazing to look back at 2017 and to reflect on all that we have accomplished in LittleBigHelp. I am deeply touched by the generosity of private individuals, members, foundations, corporate partners, businesses, the board members in Denmark and numerous volunteers. Thanks to them, it has been possible for LittleBigHelp to support 600 vulnerable children and adults directly every day and more than 1000 families indirectly. Every single day our 80 national team members in India have a huge

6

impact on our work and it would not be possible to run our projects without them. I am grateful that they choose to put their time and energy into LittleBigHelp and at the same time, grateful that we can provide them a steady income, supporting the livelihood of their families. For any change to be sustainable, you have to involve the people who are at the core and ensure they participate and take ownership over the change. Our Community Centres exist to raise awareness and promote children's rights in

local slum communities. After just 12 months we are seeing incredible changes as the local community begins to take responsibility of their life, their family members and the lives of the people in the community. An increasing number of children are enrolled in school, babies are getting vaccinated, health and hygiene is increasing, women are participating in community meetings and they have started voicing their opinion. We are thrilled to see this transformation, which is only the beginning. Through our Community Centres we were in 2017 able to enrol 141 vulnerable children into school and thereby minimize the risk of them becoming street connected children and through health camps 373 adults and children received a health check. A highlight of the year was being able to open new skill development projects ensuring 170 women and 40 men training over the next 2 years. These marginalised adults all come from extremely low- income families and are thrilled with the opportunity to learn and to help support their families. Through beautician skills, cooking classes, tailoring, jute production, electrical wiring and bike mechanics they are now being empowered socially and financially. When individuals realise and start believing that they are valuable, something incredible happens. Their

confidence increases and through this we aim to fight the inequality and discrimination, which is the reality for far too many women in India today. 100 million people in India, mainly women and girls, are involved in trafficking each year and it is especially marginalised girls and women, such as those living in the slum, who are at risk. September 30th we held our 8th Charity Gala together with our main sponsor Copenhagen Marriott Hotel. It was an unforgettable evening, where we raised an amount beyond our imagination and which has crucial importance for our projects in India. As our work in India is expanding, there is an even greater need for support. In 2018 we will therefore continue to focus on fundraising through events and corporate partnerships in order to continue our important work in India. LittleBigHelp can help ensure a brighter future for more than a thousand marginalised children and adults thanks to your invaluable support to our projects and for that we would like to say thank you! There is still much to do, and we are so excited for 2018 and to see which new heights we will reach. With love and gratitude Lisbeth Johansen. Founder, LittleBigHelp 7

Who We Are and What We Do LittleBigHelp works to create better opportunities for vulnerable children and women in West Bengal, India - each and every day. We work to secure basic
child rights such as education and protection, along with women’s empowerment through skill development. We cannot help everybody, but our belief is that everybody can help some – and we do it! Each day in 2017, we helped more than 600 vulnerable children and women to a better everyday life and brighter future, directly through our projects, by working towards empowering them to make their own choices in life. 8

LittleBigHelp was established and registered as an NGO in Denmark in 2010 by Founder Lisbeth Johansen, who gave
up her career as International Sales Director to pursue her dream of creating an NGO in India. In 2012, LittleBigHelp
was registered in India and is operating as LittleBigHelp India Trust. LittleBigHelp raises funds predominantly in Denmark, and increasingly in India, which are spent on our projects in Kolkata that we design, manage and monitor. Working with
complete honesty and transparency is essential
in

Vision:

We cannot help everybody - but we can help some. And we do it!

Mission:

We change your little help into a big help for people in need. all our work. We work to keep administration costs at
a minimum and thus rely on voluntary help and assistance from friends, family and our network who all wish to help
us make a difference for the vulnerable children and women. Throughout 2017, Founder Lisbeth Johansen and Programme Director Debasish Guha have ensured the overall management of LittleBigHelp in both Denmark and India.

Debasish Guha manages the projects and the team of 80 local team members in India on a daily basis with the assistance of local Project Managers. Programme Manager Rebekka Madsen and Fundraising and Events Manager Rikke Schrøder work between Denmark and India. 9

Community Centres In our 3 Community Centres in the slums of Ramkrishnapur, Santragatchi and Dumdum, 100 children attend our school preparation course on a daily basis. After 6 - 12 months we enrol them in local schools. Hereafter we continue to offer social and academic support through tutoring and recreational activities for these school-going children. There are more than 11 million street-connected children in India, and it is estimated that 120,000 street children are in Kolkata where LittleBigHelp works. Through our work we address some of the underlying reasons for these statistics. Despite that primary education is compulsory and free in India, many children never attend school and many drop out after only a few years. 40 % drop out of school before reaching class 8. Without support and boundaries at home, many of these children turn to 10

the streets. On the streets the children are vulnerable and some find acceptance and ‘protection’ in gangs, some earn a little money, and others become addicted to glue. The longer the children have been involved in life on the street and in an addiction, the harder it becomes to help them out of that environment. Lack of education perpetuates the cycle of poverty and their chances of a brighter future. Our goal is therefore to work with both the local communities as well as the vulnerable children to promote a sustainable development. We will work to prevent even more children from becoming street children and we offer vulnerable children and families support, awareness, health care and education at our LittleBigHelp Community Centres with the goal of improving the entire family's living conditions. In 2018 we will be opening even more centres.

IN 2017... We served 22,700 meals to the children at our Community Centres. We provided a school preparation course for 146 children from the slums. We assisted parents in the local slum communities, in enrolling 141 children in government schools to start or continue their education. We ensured a health check for more than 373 children and adults through health camps and general doctor’s visits We conducted 541 community meetings in the slum communities to address child rights and child protection issues. We provided access to driving license for 20 young and marginalised men.

Boys’ Home

12

In January 2014 we opened a longterm home for 35 former street connected boys.

drawing, meditation, playing games and other recreational activities.

In our Home, the boys can start a new life away from the street with care, protection, nutrition, education - and a place to call 'home' until they reach 18 years of age. We enroll them in the local school to secure them education and we structure their everyday life at the home with sports, music,

Our staff and skilled social workers also provide the boys with ongoing guidance and counseling about challenges faced in life and the special challenges these boys face throughout their life and how to cope with them.

13

The 4 oldest boys (14 +) were enrolled in a 12-month vocational training course (mobile repair, electrical, automobile) in addition to their regular schooling

In 2017...

A total of 33 boys

were living in Boys’ Home at the end of the year

45,116 meals

have been served throughout the year

All boys

are enrolled in different extracurricular activities such as music, dance, computer, gymnastics, karate, yoga, football, drawing and creativity

Girls’ Home In October 2014, we opened a long-term home for 25 street connected and other vulnerable girls. In our Home, the girls have a chance to start a new life in a safe environment filled with care, protection, nutrition and education – a place to call ‘home’ until they reach 18 years of age. We enrol them in local schools to secure them education and we structure their everyday life at the home with sports, music, drawing, meditation, play and 16

other recreational activities with the purpose of mental, physical and social development. Our team at the Girls’ Home also provide the girls with on-going guidance and counselling about challenges faced in life and how best to cope with them. It is especially important to offer help to girls in India, as they are extra vulnerable, even more than boys. Child marriage is not uncommon, and they risk being trafficked, raped or abused.

17

4 new girls

moved into Girls’ Home

In 2017...

A total of 21 girls were living in Girls’ Home at the end of the year

All girls are

have been served throughout the year

IN 2017... 7 new skill development projects were opened and a total of 85 women and 20 men enrolled throughout all projects. 15 trainees completed a one-year Beautician Training course in Bankura and 13 are earning money: 2 started their own business, 2 have been employed in beauty parlours, and 9 are self-employed. Their income has raised their family income by 40% on average. 23 trainees completed a one-year tailoring or beautician training course in Kolkata and 21 are now earning money through their skills.

20

Skills Development Projects At our 10 Skills Development Projects marginalised women and men are empowered financially and socially. Through the projects, 85 women and 20 men are enrolled in a skills training project with a focus on beautician training, tailoring, cooking, jute production, mehendi, bike mechanics, and electrical wiring to equip them with the skills to start an income generating activity.

When a woman earns an income the entire family benefits and LittleBigHelp therefore has an increased focus on supporting women. At the projects the women also learn about their rights and receive support and counselling as many of the women are oppressed and experience abuse.

21

Learning Centre for Tribal Youth In January 2014 we opened the Learning Centre for Tribal Youth. The centre supports 80 youth coming from low-income families living in tribal villages in Bankura, West Bengal. The aim of the Centre is to give quality English training along with basic computer skills to less privileged tribal youth and promote and assist with education initiatives at the household as well as community level. Through the 22

project we want to empower these youth with the skills that will both increase their confidence and better equip them for their future job or further studies. Through the project we hope to develop a group of students who can become agents of change and develop awareness among the community regarding the importance of education and literacy.

IN 2017... 80 students were provided with English and computer training. 100% of the students passed the English course and the computer course. 76 home visits and 20 village visits were conducted to ensure continued support of parents towards their children’s education. 2 career group counselling sessions and 1 exposure visit were arranged for the trainees to expand their knowledge about future possibilities regarding jobs and education. 3 new community based Computer Centres were opened in 3 different villages where 220 former and current students have the opportunity to continue to practice their skills close by their homes.

23

Shalimar School Shalimar School was opened in 2010, in the slum area of Shalimar, Howrah. Illiteracy in the local community is widespread and the opportunity for children to attend school and study for an education is very rare. The children of Shalimar come from impoverished families where the girls are encouraged to marry at a very early age and the boys are sent to work. The majority of these children never learn to read, write, or do simple arithmetic. All 100 boys and girls from the Shalimar School have throughout 2017 been provided with lunch every day from our school kitchen where local women prepare the food. After an investment in the Shalimar slum area for 7 years, we now choose to invest our resources in other slums in Kolkata, with a new strategy that we have experienced over the past few years has greater impact, 24

creates more development and receives more support in the local communities. We therefore choose to open more Community Centres in 2018. We were running 3 of such centres in different slums in 2017. At our Centres, the entire community is involved in a more sustainable way and the focus is on helping children get enrolled in local schools through our school preparation courses at our centres. Read more under the section “Community Centres. We are grateful to have been able to make an extraordinary difference for the 249 children who have completed a 4-year education at our school in Shalimar. Most importantly they have learnt to read and write, which will be a huge advantage for them now and in their future. They have also received teaching in many other subjects, as well as their rights, which all together has given them an important foundation in life. Many are continuing their education at other local schools.

IN 2017... 17,055 lunch meals were served to the students in Shalimar School. 1,056 educational materials were distributed including books, pencils, erasers etc. 680 home visits were conducted to ensure continued support of parents towards their children’s education. 89 students from Shalimar School were enrolled in Government Schools to continue their education. We offered after school coaching to 19 former students of Shalimar School who are now in government school.

25

Centre for Special Education Since October 2013, LittleBigHelp has been supporting the Centre for Special Education – a school for 128 children and adolescents with special needs who would otherwise not be able to attend school or receive care. The Centre also provides a home for 15 of the older students of the school. The students come from impoverished tribal villages around Bankura, which is a town situated a few hours outside of Kolkata. Many of these children suffer from neglect, malnutrition, the 26

prevalence of tribal superstition, ignorance and lack of awareness among the families and community members about special needs and the rights of children with special needs and challenges. Consequently they are marginalized and excluded from their community. The Centre works to provide comprehensive rehabilitation programmes for these children to improve their quality of life and accelerate the process of mainstreaming them into the society.

The Centre therefore also offers vocational training and life skills education so that the students are given the right to choose what they want to do, based on their strengths and needs.

We strongly feel that the children with special needs have the need and right to decent work and to enjoy freedom, equity, social security and human dignity – just like any other child should.

They have unique differences and abilities and they have the right to the same educational, health, nutrition, protection and care opportunities. Some may require special support services, assisting devices or job modifications but these are essential investments compared to a lifetime of productivity and contribution. 27
