Dear Friend of LittleBigHelp What a year 2018 has been! With new projects opened and great results from our current projects, I am beyond grateful for the generosity of private individuals, members, foundations, corporate partners, businesses, the board members in Denmark and numerous volunteers for making our work possible. Thanks to them, LittleBigHelp has been able to support 900 vulnerable children and adults directly every day and more than 1000 families indirectly. But were it not for our 90 devoted national team members in India, who work tirelessly in challenging conditions every single day, our projects would not exist. I am so grateful to every one of them for their dedication to their work and their enthusiasm to help equip

6

children and adults to create a brighter future for themselves, their family and their community. We all know it’s best for a child to grow up in a family and preferably with relatives if they are able to properly take care of the child. However an estimated 11 million street connected children in India do not have adequate parental care or access to their basic rights. Strengthening families and communities is therefore central to the work we do through our Community Centres and Skills Development courses in different slums. In 2016 we opened our first 3 Community Centres in the slums of Kolkata and in 2018 we had expanded to 7 Centres providing 225 children school preparation courses

on a daily basis, while strengthening families and communities through skills development training for higher incomes, and creating awareness on rights, entitlements, health and empowering women and girls. For any change to be sustainable, you have to involve the people who are at the core and ensure they participate and take ownership over the change. In LittleBigHelp we are passionate about empowering women and girls, and decreasing the gender inequality and discrimination that so strongly exists in India especially amongst the poor living in slums. 100 million people in India, mainly women and girls, are involved in trafficking each year and it is especially marginalised girls and women, such as those living in the slum, who are at risk. 118 socio-economically vulnerable women from the slums completed one of LittleBigHelp’s skill development courses in 2018 and can now earn money through their new skill. The difference that we see in these women as they gain confidence and start believing that they are valuable is incredible. But we are not only seeing changes in the women. The positive effect of the training ripples on to the family who benefit from the extra income and the newly gained knowledge the women bring home regarding health

and hygiene. The resistance that so many women initially faced from their families slowly begins to fade. Only 18% of our trainees from the slums were allowed to leave their home for work before they joined the training. After the training 88 % are now allowed to go out for work. What a transformation! October 6th we held our 9th consecutive Charity Gala together with our main sponsor Copenhagen Marriott Hotel. It was an unforgettable evening, where we raised an amount beyond our imagination and which has crucial importance for our projects in India. As our work in India is expanding, there is an even greater need for support. In 2019 we will therefore continue to focus on fundraising through events and corporate partnerships in order to continue our important work in India. LittleBigHelp can help ensure a brighter future for more than a thousand marginalised children and adults thanks to your invaluable support to our projects and for that we would like to say thank you! There is still much to do, and we have great ambitions for 2019.

With love and gratitude Lisbeth Johansen. Founder, LittleBigHelp

Who We Are and What We Do LittleBigHelp works to create better opportunities for vulnerable children and women in West Bengal, India - each and every day. We work to secure basic
child rights such as education and protection, along with women’s empowerment through skill development. We cannot help everybody, but our belief is that everybody can help some – and we do it! Each day in 2018, we helped more than 900 vulnerable children and adults to a better everyday life and brighter future, directly through our projects, by working towards empowering them to make their own choices in life. 8

LittleBigHelp was established and registered as an NGO in Denmark in 2010 by Founder Lisbeth Johansen, who gave
up her career as International Sales Director to pursue her dream of creating an NGO in India. In 2012, LittleBigHelp
was registered in India and is operating as LittleBigHelp India Trust. LittleBigHelp raises funds predominantly in Denmark, and increasingly in India, which are spent on our projects in Kolkata that we design, manage and monitor. Working with
complete honesty and transparency is essential
in

Vision:

We cannot help everybody - but we can help some. And we do it! all our work. We work to keep administration costs at
a minimum and thus rely on voluntary help and assistance from friends, family and our network who all wish to help
us make a difference for the vulnerable children and women. Our Indian Programme Director Debasish Guha manages the projects and the team of 90 local team members in India on a daily basis with the assistance of local Project Managers and Officers. Programme Manager Rebekka

Mission:

We change your little help into a big help for people in need.

Madsen, Fundraising & Events Manager Rikke Schrøder and Project Assistant Rachel Kahlke work between Denmark and India as does Founder Lisbeth Johansen who continues to head the organisation on a voluntary basis. 9

Community Centres In 2016 we opened our first 3 Community Centres in 3 different slums of Kolkata with the goal of strengthening the families living there and their communities. With an estimated 11 million street-connected children in India, we wanted to focus on preventative interventions where we help prevent more children from being abandoned or living a life without access to their rights. Through our Community Centres in slums we therefore create awareness about rights, entitlements, health, hygiene and the importance of education. In 2018 we had opened a total of 7 centres and throughout the year we provided school preparation courses to 311 children including daily meals and monthly health checks and counselling. After 6 - 12 months we helped the parents of 225 children enrol them in local schools. Our Community Centres are a safe place for the children, in contrast to the slums, and here there is time for them to learn, relax and play and we continue to keep in touch with the school going children to ensure they stay in school. 10

Despite that primary education is compulsory and free in India, approx. 20 % of the children in the slums where we work have never attended school and many drop out after only a few years. 40 % of all children in India drop out of school before reaching class 8. Without support and boundaries at home, many of these children turn to the streets. On the streets the children are vulnerable and some find acceptance and ‘protection’ in gangs, some earn a little money, and others become addicted to glue. Lack of education perpetuates the cycle of poverty and their chances of a brighter future. Our goal is therefore to work with both the local slum communities as well as the vulnerable children to promote a sustainable development that improves the entire families living conditions. Because when parents pursue a change it will benefit the children. We do not give them short-term help, but support and equip the children and their parents to create a better life for themselves, with good future opportunities. In 2019 we will be opening even more centres.

IN 2018... We served 36.624 meals to the children at our Community Centres. We provided a school preparation course for 311 children from the slums. We assisted parents in the local slum communities, in enrolling 225 children in government schools to start or continue their education. We ensured more than 600 health checks children and adults through health camps and general doctor’s visits. We conducted 255 home visits and community meetings in the slum communities to address child rights, health and hygiene, women empowerment and entitlements. We conducted 208 individual counselling sessions and 173 group counselling sessions for the children in the centres on trust, morals, emotions, empathy, communication, health, etc.

11

Boys’ Home In January 2014 we opened a longterm home for 35 former street connected boys. In our Home, the boys can start a new life away from the street with care, protection, nutrition, education - and a place to call 'home' until they reach 18 years of age. We enroll them in the local school to secure them education and we structure their everyday life at the home with sports, swimming, music, drawing, meditation, playing games and other recreational activities. Our skilled social workers and counsellors also provide the boys with ongoing guidance and coun-

12

seling about challenges faced in life and the special challenges these boys will face throughout their life and how to cope with them. As the children get older we focus on preparing them for the independency that comes with adulthood. We discuss with each child what their dreams and possibilities are for the future, and we enrol them in vocational training courses to ensure that they have learnt a skill from which they can earn money in the future. As in any other family, we also teach them how to cook, clean, budget, pay bills, etc. to ensure a smooth transition into adulthood.

13

In 2018... 46,160 meals

have been served throughout the year

A total of 34 boys were living in Boys’ Home at the end of the year

The 7 oldest boys (14 +) were enrolled in a 12-month vocational training course (mobile repair, electrical, automobile) in addition to their regular schooling

All boys are in enrolled in different recreational activities such as swimming, music, dance, gymnastics, karate, yoga, football, drawing and creativity

286 individual counselling sessions and 111 group counselling sessions were

conducted for the boys to help them deal with past trauma and develop in a positive direction

Girls’ Home In October 2014, we opened a long-term home for 25 street connected and other vulnerable girls. In our Home, the girls have a chance to start a new life in a safe environment filled with care, protection, nutrition and education – a place to call ‘home’ until they reach 18 years of age. We enrol them in local schools to secure them education and we structure their everyday life at the home with sports, karate, swimming, music, drawing, meditation, play and other recreational activities with the purpose of mental, physical and social development. Our skilled team of social workers and counsellors at the Home also provide the girls with on-going guidance and counselling about challenges faced in life and how best to cope with them. 16

It is especially important to offer help to girls in India, as they are extra vulnerable, even more than boys. Child marriage is not uncommon, and girls from socio economically vulnerable backgrounds are at great risk of being trafficked, raped or abused.

17

In 2018... 29,448 meals

have been served throughout the year

A total of 21 girls were living in Girls’ Home at the end of the year

All girls are in enrolled in different recreational

activities such as karate,

swimming, music, singing, dance, drawing and creativity

264 individual counselling sessions and 98 group counselling sessions were

conducted for the girls to help them deal with past trauma and develop in a positive direction

IN 2018... A total of 10 skill development projects provided training for 118 women and 20 men. Only 18% of the female trainees were allowed by their families to go out for work before they joined the training. After the training 88 % are now allowed to go out for work. 35 trainees completed a skills training course in Bankura and 100 % are now earning money through their new skills. 103 trainees completed a skills training course in Kolkata and 93 % are now earning money through their skills

20

Skills Development Projects When a woman earns an income the entire family benefits and LittleBigHelp therefore has an increased focus on supporting women. At our 10 Skills Development Projects marginalised women and men are empowered financially and socially. Through the projects in 2018, 118 women and 20 men were enrolled in a skills training project with a focus on beautician training, tailoring, cooking, jute production, mehendi, bike mechanics, and electrical wiring to equip them with the skills to start an income generating activity. All trainees also receive help in open-

ing a bank account, and learn the basics of entrepreneurship, dealing with customers and financial management. At the projects the women also learn about their rights, health, hygiene, and receive support and counselling as many of the women are oppressed and experience abuse. For the same reason we also conduct regular home visits to the trainees to meet the trainee in their homes and discuss about their situations, gather and verify information, meet and counsel their family members to ensure their support for the trainees attendance at the skills training. 21

Learning Centre for Tribal Youth In January 2014 we opened the Learning Centre for Tribal Youth. The Centre supports 75 youth coming from poor socio-economic families living in tribal villages by giving them quality English training along with basic computer skills to promote and assist with education initiatives at the household as well as community level. Furthermore, we are running 3 community-based computer centres where a total of 225 marginalised youth have access to computer training close by their homes in the villages. 22

Through the project we want to empower these youth with the right skills to enable them to become self-reliant and confident and better equip them for their future job or further studies. Access to computer training in this area is very rare and only a few learning institutions have computers. Through the project we hope to develop a group of students who can become agents of change and develop awareness among the community regarding the importance of education and literacy.

IN 2018... 80 students were provided with English and computer training 78 students continued studying after completion of the course, while 2 students found a job shortly after 65 home visits and 20 village visits were conducted to ensure continued support of parents towards their children’s education 3 career group counselling sessions and 2 exposure visits were arranged for the trainees to expand their knowledge about future possibilities regarding jobs and education 3 community based Computer Centres in 3 different villages provided 220 former and current students with the opportunity to continue to practice their skills close by their homes

23

Centre for Special Education Since October 2013, LittleBigHelp has been supporting the Centre for Special Education – a school for 150 children and adolescents with special needs who would otherwise not be able to attend school or receive care. The Centre also provides a home for 15 of the older students of the school. The students come from impoverished tribal villages around Bankura, which is a town situated a few hours outside of Kolkata. Many of these children suffer from neglect, malnutrition, the 24

prevalence of tribal superstition, ignorance and lack of awareness among the families and community members about special needs and the rights of children with special needs and challenges. Consequently they are marginalized and excluded from their community. The Centre works to provide ‘comprehensive rehabilitation programmes’ for these children to improve their quality of life and accelerate the process of mainstreaming them into the society. The Centre therefore also offers

vocational training and life skills education so that the students are given the right to choose what they want to do, based on their strengths and needs. They have unique differences and abilities and they have the right to the same educational, health, nutrition, protection and care opportunities. Some may require special support services, assisting devices or job modifications but these are essential investments compared to a lifetime of productivity and contribution.

We strongly feel that the children with special needs have the need and right to decent work and to enjoy freedom, equity, social security and human dignity – just like any other child should. With support received from a Danish foundation we were in 2018 able to help ‘Centre for Special Education’ with a much needed expansion of their buildings to that they can continue to provide quality education and care to an increasing number of children with special needs. 25

In 2018... 20 out of 25 children

have learnt to sit independently

47 out of 50 children have learnt to indicate their toilet needs

48 out of 50 children have learnt to eat independently

26

50 out of 55 children

have learnt to do double digit addition and subtraction

44 out of 48 youth

have learnt tailoring or making of jute products
