Girls’ and Boys’ Home In our girls’ and boys’ homes, vulnerable girls and boys can get away from the streets and start a new life with care, comfort, nutrition and education – and a place to call ‘home’. We opened the homes in 2014, and they now provide a longterm home for 21 girls and 34 boys. When the children are not in the local school, they spend their time playing games and music, drawing, meditating, doing sports and other recreational activities, which helps their mental, physical and social development. Our team and skilled social workers also provide the children with guidance 16
on how to cope with the challenges they may face in life. For instance, girls in India are especially vulnerable to rape, abuse, trafficking and child marriage. As the children get older we focus on preparing them for the independency that comes with adulthood. We discuss with each child what their dreams and possibilities are for the future, and we enrol them in vocational training courses to ensure that they have learnt a skill from which they can earn money in the future. As in any other family, we also teach them how to cook, clean, budget, pay bills, etc. to ensure a smooth transition into adulthood.
