10 Things Your Massage Therapist Wants To Say You plan of having a massage appointment for you want to experience its impressive health perks. Then, you think of the possible awkward moments, pain and wasted cash when having an up-close-and-personal session with your massage therapist. But please, don’t let your negative thoughts stop you from experiencing the magic of massage. You won’t likely have the best possible massage experience if you are oblivious about the dos and don’ts of massage and what registered massage therapists are really thinking. After doing some research about what an RMT probably wants his/her client to know, here are the ten common things that you should consider.
1.“Stop calling us as masseuses. As you visit a massage spa, always remember calling them by their hard-earned titles, like Registered Massage Therapist, Massage Therapist or simply, RMT. With years of training and education, they provide well prepared research-based solutions to assist their clients forhealth maintenance. They don’t actually like you calling them as masseuses no matter how cool that word sounds to you.
2.“Please don’t be late.” Your massage therapist has clients coming in right after you, so you should be on time. As possible, he/she likes working on you for the entire scheduled time, so being late means having a less time left for the said session.
3. “How about taking a warm shower before the session? It is a need for you to take care of yourself before you enter a massage spa. The easiest way to prepare is having a warm shower. Its relaxation effect on your body would help you be less tense during the session, benefiting you and your RMT. For example, it would likely prevent you from having body insecurities and your therapist would appreciate you observing a proper hygiene.
4.“It really doesn’t matter that you haven’t shaved.” As long as you are clean, your therapist wouldn’t consider your leg hair as a big deal. Actually, it has no effect on the treatment. If it does affect the therapy, oils and lotions are there to help you.
5.“Please keep yourself covered. RMTs likely follow draping protocols to protect you and themselves. They are trained on how to properly drape clients, so it means that they only drape the area being treated at that time, and then they let you rewrap yourself fully before undraping other areas. Even if you are comfortable with nudity, they are not interested on seeing you naked.
6.“Don’t be shy about your butt.” In the world of massage therapy, your butt is not cute, small nor sexy. It is a big muscle. Massage therapists observe the body in a clinical sense. If you have problems in your low back, legs, hips or gluteal muscles (your butt muscle), let them know.
7.“Your body is beautiful just how it is. It breaks their hearts when they see their clients having body insecurities due to a certain deformity, scars or stretch marks. RMTs are here to help clients with their health. They are not here to judge. As long as you are on your way to health, keep in mind that you are beautiful just the way you are.
8.“Do your homework.” Your exercises. Your hydrotherapy. Your homecare. Perhaps, they would want to follow you around, give treatment and remind you of all the things that should be done after the session, but they can’t. If you want to feel better than you usually feel, do your homework.
9. “Your success is our success.” Their utmost priority is their clients’ recovery. It really matters what you tell them whether it is positive or negative. Your therapist worries when you struggle and refers you to other practitioners for the betterment of your health.
10. “We love referrals. If you enjoy your massage experience, share it to your friends. Your therapist would be pleased to know that you are happy with the result and you recommend your friends to try the service.
