MEETTHE BOARD The Board of Directors is composed of 12 volunteer member representatives nominated by members and voted on by the membership. They donate their time for three (3) year term and their efforts to ensure the prosperity of local business and address any and all issues necessary to promote local industry. The Board of Directors, guided by its 4 officers, is responsible for governing Chamber business and the setting of the Mena/Polk County Chamber of Board Members: Commerce policies and future directions.

As you read through our magazine you’ll learn that our Chamber has provided services and representation to our members since 1898. You will find details of our special events, and learn about the vast amenities and resources available in our community. The Mena/Polk County Chamber of Commerce is currently made up of 247 committed members. The strength of the Chamber comes from our members. They are committed to progress and prosperity for all. As a group, they volunteer their time and expertise to the efforts of the Chamber, allocate resources to programs that assist our member businesses, our customers and the community. And not to mention what a wonderful place Mena/Polk County is to visit. There are no words to describe the beauty of Mena/Polk County, Arkansas. Nestled in the heart of the Ouachita Mountains and the Ouachita National Forest, we are blessed to be able to enjoy all its natural beauty right here in our backyard. SCENICATTRACTIONS Just a few Scenic Attractions to be discovered in Mena/Polk County Be sure to bring along your camera. You will not want to miss these amazing beautiful photo opportunities! The 1.8 million acres of the Ouachita National Forest and surrounding area comes alive with brilliant vivid color in the fall months. Oranges, reds, yellows and greens dot the landscape with vibrant color. A relaxing drive just about anywhere in Mena/Polk County will energize your visual senses with spectacular sights of the rolling hills and deep valleys of color. A popular way to enjoy the fall colors is to take a leisurely drive or motorcycle ride along the Talimena National Scenic Byway, or hike the many Ouachita trails throughout the Cossatot River State Park or Queen Wilhelmena State Park. Whichever you choose, you will enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery the Ouachitas have to offer, be sure to bring your camera. Knowing when the peak color will occur is challenging, but here is what we do know: the majority of the hardwoods will peak, depending on weather, anywhere between the last two weeks of October and the first two weeks of November. The state website www.Arkansas.com, with the help of their color spotters, provides visitors with a weekly fall color update beginning in late September.

Historic Mena KCS Depot Center Located at 524 Sherwood Avenue in the heart of downtown Mena, Arkansas, the KCS Depot is rich with deep history of Mena and Polk County. Built in 1896, the restored station houses historical displays, railroad memorabilia and â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Ouachita Portraitâ&#x20AC;? exhibited collection of drawings from local Monta Black Philpot.

Ouachita National Recreation Trails

With easy access to the Ouachita National Forest and State Parks, visitors and residents to this area are presented with many recreation resources. Over 600 miles of trails located in the Ouachita Mountains provide unique adventure opportunities for ATV/ORV riding, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Horseback riding, and more. The many lakes, rivers and streams provide for water sports, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Enjoy the year round Hunting and Fishing opportunities in the Ouachita National Forest. Popular trail systems and attractions within the Ouachita National Forest include: Albert Pike Recreation Area, Bard Springs, Caney Creek Trails. Fouche Mountain Trail, Little Missouri Fall, Shady Lake Recreation Area, Sugar Creek Trail, and the Wolf Pen Gap Trail Complex. Wolf Pen Gap Trail Complex With 35 miles of looped trails that attract ATV/OTV riders from all over, featuring high mountain vistas that leads the rider through an array of areas. The trail passes the unique 2-footed oak tree and an abandoned mine shaft with loops that connect to accommodate riders who want to vary the length of their riding experience. Enjoy scenery along the Cossatot Scenic and Recreational River and the Shady Lake Recreation Area which offers a campground. The majestic Talimena National Scenic Byway is gorgeous throughout any season and offers its natural beauty year round, with the most popular season of autumn and showcasing fall foliage. The byway spans 54 miles between Mena, Arkansas and Talihina, Oklahoma, which both cities serve as the “Gateway Cities” to this national attraction. Along the drive you will find numerous stops for some of the most breathtaking scenery this area has to offer, and not to mention the highest peaks around for night time star gazing. Located 13 miles from Mena, you will find the Queen Wilhelmina State Park and Lodge, “The Castle in the Sky”. Newly remodeled Queen Wilhelmina lodge offers breathtaking views atop of Arkansas’ second tallest peak.

A LITTLEABOUT POLK COUNTY Polk County, Arkansas was organized in 1844, making it the 48th county in Arkansas. The county is located in western central Arkansas with a current population of just over 20,000. Polk County was named for the new president of the United States, President James Knox Polk. The county has a total area of 862 square miles, with long, narrow ridges of folded rock, large fertile valleys and mountains covered with oak and pine trees make up the landscape of the county. Nearly half of Polk County lies in the Ouachita National Forest. Rich Mountain, the county’s most prominent landmark, has a peak of 2, 861 feet, and contains, in a single square mile, more species of wild plants, flowers, and weeds in their natural state than can be found anywhere else in the word on a similar track of land. Many creeks and rivers are scattered through the county including Lake Wilhelmina, the Cossatot River and the Ouachita River. With 28 locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Polk County is rich with history. The City of Mena is the county seat, where you will find the Historical Polk County Court House and the Polk County Library along with other county services. Mena is a gateway to some of the most visited tourist attractions in Arkansas. Every year, Chamber members join together for our annual celebration and opportunity to honor those who have excelled in community service and improvement. Nominations are received from the community to present annual Community Awards for Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Best New Construction, Best Renovation/Beautification, and Business of the Year. The Chamber and its members also strongly believe in investing in the next generation of business leaders. Exciting and entertaining fundraisers are held during the event that traditionally generate thousands and allows the Chamber to present various scholarships to well deserving traditional and non-traditional students in the county.
