Reflections From History and Faith The Innkeeper’s Decision By Jeff Olson
We are now in the midst of that time of year when the customary seasonal activities surrounding Christmas occupy much of our personal time. You know - things such as shopping for that perfect gift, making plans for the kids (and perhaps grand kids too) to come home so the family can be together, attending or participating in the Christmas program with your church, attending the Christmas parties with friends, co-workers or church family, buying the ingredients for that special Christmas dinner, looking forward to some of the post-season bowl games and maybe a little more hunting. And, most important of all - having that special time of worship which centers around the reason for the season. Oh, and be sure to thank poor ole’ Dad who has made his annual pilgrimage into the attic and with pretty much the same results as last year... hauling down the decorations and then up again to try locating that one box that has the special ornaments that we cannot do without. Then, back for the Christmas lights and knowing better than to expect them all to light up. After tinkering with them for too long he thought - no problem... As cheap as these lights are we can just buy a new set the next time we are in town. Wasteful? Maybe, but he rationalizes that his time is more valuable than the nominal expense. Naturally, even with the new set there are one or two bulbs which refuse to cooperate. No one will notice... Wrong! Oh well, Dad thinks it is still a beautiful tree and after all, according to Andy Williams, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! It is interesting to see how this special season of the year reveals much about each of us, especially our priorities and our treasure. It is a vivid illustration of how we tend to take the time or, if you will, make the room for those activities and those people who are most important to us. The key phrase here is “make the room.” In being the keepers of our own lives, there is much to be learned about each of us through whom and what occupies our time and our space. This is not only true during the Christmas season, but throughout the year as well. I cannot help but think about this when reading Luke, chapter 2, in the account of Jesus’ birth. In verse 7, we read that there was no room for Him in the inn. How many times in years past have I read and heard this verse and how many times have I failed to consider the innkeeper and his response. While it is true that no innkeeper is actually men-

tioned in the biblical account, it is likely that one did exist. I have often wondered why the innkeeper could not have somehow found some room or arranged for them to stay at another inn or in a home. Why do you think this extra effort may never have been done? Why do you think that the innkeeper apparently took the easy way out? Was there really no room for Him in the inn, or was there a refusal to make room for Him? Does this not strike a personal chord in your life? - in mine? If not, it is certainly time that it did. There is contemporary song of the season called, There’s A New Kid in Town. I have news. He is no longer new in town and He is not a kid anymore, but He is still being kept outside waiting for some of us to make room for Him. When it is all said and done, what it all boils down to is a decision. Like the innkeeper in Bethlehem, each of us have a decision to make with Jesus? Praise God He is no longer the baby in a manger or the suffering servant or the crucified sacrifice for our sins. He is the risen King of Kings and Lord of Lords who stands at the door and knocks (Revelation 3:20). The question is: Will the innkeeper open the door and let Jesus in or will the answer continue to be unchanged: There is no room for Him. So, before moving any further along with the festivities of the season, just maybe we should decide that Jesus does indeed have a place of ultimate importance in all this and then prove it by making room
for Him. This He wants so very much, and not for only a season but for a permanent stay. Perhaps it would be a kind and generous gesture to give Him the best room you have. Better yet, why not just humbly open your heart and sign the title over to Him and allow God to convert that old shabby run down inn into a temple where the Holy Spirit can dwell and have total control of your life (1 Corinthians 3:16). This way, instead of being treated as just an occasional transient or as only one resident among many, He would become the owner - the landLORD. What a much needed change that would be for some of us, and what a birthday present it would be for Jesus!

Sean Alexander Hughes, Allison Elizabeth Hughes, Marc David Wilson, Adam Taylor Hughes, Rachel Elizabeth Wilson, Lauren Ann Hughes, Katherine Frances Wilson and numerous great grandchildren. Marc also has one brother, Darryl Wilson of Torrance, California. He was born in Enid, Oklahoma and lived with his mother until a significant health issue took her life at an early age. He soon moved to Pencil Bluff where he was raised by his maternal grandparents Floyd and Adelaide Harris. Marc went to, and graduated from, Oden Public schools. He was a multi-year All State athlete on the Ode Maddox coached basketball team that was State Class B Runner-Up in 1953 and State Class B Champion in 1954. Marc, after graduating from Oden in 1954, matriculated to Beebe Junior College as a scholarship athlete to begin his academic studies. He was a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Basketball ALL-AMERICAN in 1955-56. After two years at Beebe, he furthered his education and basketball career at Bethel College in Mackenzie, Tennessee. While there, he met the love of his life, Sue Percifull. After college graduation in 1958, he soon married Sue and began his career in the United States Marine Corps. Lieutenant Colonel Wilson proudly served the United States actively for 23 years, retiring in 1983. He served valiantly during the Vietnam conflict and for many years thereafter commanded numerous joint military operations around the world preparing for a potential World War III. Marc rarely talked about combat or the theater of war. When he did, he spoke of the profound sadness associated with it. He never forgot his Marines that were lost and those that continued to struggle post combat. After retiring in 1983 from the Marines, he began farming in Pencil Bluff. Marc loved all of his animals. From Gertie the Goose, to Jodi the Goat, to Polderdyke the Brahman bull, he had a special bond with them all. His full time affair of farming only lasted a couple of years due to his desire to teach science at the little school that gave him his first chance at an education and a way out of extreme poverty, Oden Public Schools. Mr. Wilson soon became one of the most popular teachers to ever lecture within the halls of Oden. His beloved students quickly changed his name to “Kern”. To this day, most of his former students still call him that. He was proud of every student that he helped educate. He received as much from them as he gave to them. December 18, 2019 Oden live today in the fond memories of so many. After teaching, Marc, for a second time, retired back to his Happy Hills Farm. His focus at this point in his life were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. To ultimately know Marc Wilson was to know his grandchildren. His grandchildren were the light of his life and they were clearly his greatest accomplishment. His love for all of them was unending. In lieu of flowers, the family would respectfully ask that you donate to the endowed Harris/Percifull scholarship at the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain Foundation. Memorial service will be Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Oden High School Bill Kelly Gymnasium in Oden, AR. Services under the direction of Thornton Funeral Home in Mount Ida, AR. Beasl Kent
Gorden
Beasl Kent Gorden, 57 of Jacksonville passed away on December 12, 2019. He was born December 21, 1961 in Mena, Arkansas to Bob and Sarah Gorden. His early years were spent on the family farm where Kent was a cattleman alongside his father and brother. During this time he discovered his passion for riding bulls much to his mother’s dismay and protest. Later in life he found his trade and his love of carpentry. He discovered this skill as he constructed a golf course in Florida. Later he expanded this skill as he entered into the contracting world where he built homes in central Arkansas. When he wasn’t working, Kent enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and hunting. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR and football games. His favorite games to watch were those of the Dallas Cowboys. He also fancied himself a critic of popular sitcoms. He enjoyed all time spent in the presence of his children and grandchildren and he was always their number one fan in any endeavor they chose to embark on. He also enjoyed his time as a patron at the local Chili’s where he visited regularly with a multitude of close friends. Kent was not a man of many hats. He was a man of one hat for the most part. A
hat reading CAT across the front. He enjoyed the small and simple things in life to all who knew him. Kent was preceded in death by his father, Bob Gorden. Kent is survived by his mother, Sarah Gorden. His wife of 22 years, Dena Gorden of Mena, His daughter Tosha Lance and her spouse Mike Lance of Waldron, their three children Kailie, Abbie, and Andrew, his son Kyle Gorden and his spouse Treell Gorden of Benton, their three children Timber, Archer, and Creek, his daughters Ally Hull and Katy Gorden of Jacksonville, His brother Brent Gorden and his spouse Dedria Gorden of Mena and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Dallas Avenue Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Lance officiating. Interment will follow in the Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena. School: Acorn Elementary Teacher: Mrs. Pearson Connor. Bottomley Age: 9 Jesus getting born is the most thing I love. Jesus is the most happy thing. Family is the best to have around all the time so fun, cozy, and comfortable. I love Jesus and my family, without Jesus and my family Christmas is nothing to me. Cy Young Age: 8 I love Christmas because gifts, family, and friends, joy, and Jesus’ birthday. Also, having a good time with your family. So on Christmas have fun, and that is why Christmas is my favorite holiday. Braydon Dukeshire Age 8 Christmas is not about presents. It’s about family, and Jesus. I like spending time with my everybody. I like listening to Christmas songs. Last year I got a BB gun for Christmas. My favorite thing is Jesus’s birthday Cavan Reynolds Age:9 Christmas is the day of excitement. When you wake up you can’t resist waking up your parents. When you open your presents you look at them with excitement. Kooper Hollin Age: 8 All the laughter and friends and family and joy throwing wrapping paper at each other and the songs is what Christmas means to me. Kylee Enyeart Age: 8 What Christmas Means to Me, is that everyone spreads hope, joy and love. You don’t need gifts or candy, all you need is family in your heart. Jesus was born on Christmas but Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph were Jesus’s parents. They got there on a donkey. Without Jesus and my family Christmas is nothing to me.
Drew Mabry Age: 8 Christmas is one important holiday. One reason is because we spend our joy with our family. There are other important reasons like Jesus, the one who died on the cross for our sins, the One Who Strengthens me. Learning how Jesus died on the cross is important. Why it is important is because it’s a special tradition about Christmas family and friends. When we get together with family and friends with joy that is the most amazing gift ever, and that is what Christmas means to me. Isaiah Davidson Age: 8 It’s not about presents it is about Jesus. We don’t need presents, but we want them. You should just spend time with your family and pray to God and Jesus. Connor Duvall Age: 9 Christmas is about celebrating Jesus’ birthday and laughter, joy, friends and family. Christmas is very important.
Ashlynn Davis Age: 9 What Christmas means to me to me… I love to spend time with my family, I love to open presents, but christmas is not all about opening presents it is about spending time with your family and having fun and playing with family and friends. It is also about having a good feast with all of the people you are with for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, when you get up in the morning, sometimes you get to drink hot coco and some people get to sit in front of the fire place and get all cozy and warm. When you wake up on Christmas, we all get a lot of presents but if you’re bad then you won’t get any presents. Christmas is all about having a good time with family and friends. Samyual Casten Age: 9 When me and my family get together is what Christmas means to me. I love my family so much. What I love about CHRISTMAS is spending time with my family and opening presents. James Gibbons Age: 8 What Christmas means to me… Christmas means my family sharing, giving, having fun, and most of all being together. Savannah Christian Age: 9 Christmas means a lot to me. We get to celebrate when Jesus was born. We get to spend time together as a family, and we get to open presents. Ryder Laughlin Age: 9 What Christmas means to me is spending
time and playing with my family. Another thing, Christmas is not about receiving it is about giving. Most of all celebrating Jesus’ birth is most important. Sydni Hutson Age: 9 All the ornaments on the tree and the star on the top makes me happy as can be.
Janice Gonzales Age: 10 What Christmas means to me is Christ the Lord because He was born in Bethlehem and his parents are Mary and Joseph. I will show you that Mary is trying to find a place that she can have Baby Jesus and you know to save us from sin. He rose from the dead. He made laughter and joy and love to the world and one thing you should do is love the Lord. Kyle Ziemniak Age: 8 Today me and my sister Jamie are opening presents, then when it is time to go to Grandma and Grandpa we are going to eat and have fun. We are going to celebrate and I got to give something to my Grandma and Grandpa. Nevaeh Scott Age: 8 Christmas means joy and love and happiness. Christmas makes good in your heart. Serenity N. Clausen July 30, 2019
Kaidon McQueen Age: 8 What Christmas means to me is family’s love, decorating the Christmas tree, and praying for Jesus before opening presents. Kylie Ezell Age: 9 All of your families get around the tree and watch the kids open presents and then we have fun playing the new games the kids got for Christmas. Then we go outside and play in the snow with your family and then we go in and have some hot coco, watch Christmas movies, and go to bed. Kasen Strother Age: 9 Christmas means that I get to spend time with family and have fun and get new toys. Samuel Strasner Age: 8 Christmas means the joy of family. Spending time with family and friends. It’s not about the presents, it’s about family and friends and Jesus Christ our savior. We sing songs at people’s houses. Doesn’t that sound fun?
Mason Hart Age: 8 Christmas is spending time with my family. I like to make Christmas ornaments with them. When we are done, we decorate the Christmas tree with them. Afterwards, we play in the snow and have snowball fights and go sledding! Sarah Bloodworth Age: 8 What Christmas means to me is enjoying the time of family decorating the Christmas tree, celebrating the birth of Jesus, waking up on Christmas day opening presents, and looking in my stocking to find toys and candy.
Bailey White Age: 9 Christmas is Jesus and spending time with my family. When it is dinner time, we hold hands and say prayers. Me and my sister, Payton, we sing one of the songs that we learned in music class then we open presents. Next, we go to my Mimi and Papa’s house so we can open presents from them. Khloe Crawford Age: 8 Christmas is a wonderful time of year. Now I am going to tell you what it means to me. I like the presents and Santa coming to visit me. But, that is not all what it really means to me is that I get to spend time with my family, I really love them. They are the best thing that ever happened to me. I love them more than anything in the world that is what Christmas means to me. Ciara Candelaria Age: 8 Christmas means family time. We get up and we open presents, we watch Christmas movies with breakfast and do a lot more things. Christmas is the best year ever. Annalysia Watts Age:9 What Christmas means to me is my family, my cousins, and my friends. My cousins and friends may not get presents this year. I may help them get presents. I don’t know the address where my friends live so my mom may call them. We will probably go to Walmart, Dollar Tree, and General Dollar. I hope I get a present for my brothers, my sister, and my mom and dad. What Christmas really means to me is going to church to learn about when Jesus was born because it’s Christmas and it’s Jesus’ birthday. Avery Singleton Age: 9 What Christmas means to me is sharing presents and filling our bodies with good food to get ready for a fun day about Jesus’ birthday.
