Career Tips For New Grads
(STATEPOINT) As soon as those graduation caps hit the ground, new grads are bombarded with that toughest of questions: "What are you going to do with the rest of your life?" Finding a job and building a career can be challenging in any economy and even more difficult during tough times. With today's abundance of career websites, job boards and seminars, it can be hard to know where and how to focus your energies. But good career advice is eternal, stresses Jack Nadel, a decorated World War II hero who has made tens of millions of dollars over a 65-year career. "Regardless of the economic news, actions of the government or the natural forces that oppose us, we must build within ourselves the capability to survive, prosper and feel good," he advises. These days, Nadel is sharing the knowledge he gained in his long career with new graduates and other members of the younger generation who are looking to get ahead. And he has made much of this advice available in a new book, entitled "Use What You Have To Get What You Want." Here are some of Nadel's top career tips: * Planning is as important as hard work. Hard work is important, but running around in circles gets you nowhere. With today's high rates of unemployment, it's best to focus your search on jobs you are most qualified for, instead of applying for every opening in your preferred field. You might even consider spending more time building specific skill sets while job hunting. This way, when the perfect job appears, you'll be a better fit. * Talk to someone who's done it successfully. The Internet abounds with selfappointed "experts," but consulting with people who are respected and successful in your industry is sure to get you better results. Tap into networks you may have built from internships or part-time jobs, as well as with former teachers. * Prepare well. Before a job interview or meeting, repeat this advice to yourself three times: Listen. Think Positive. Project Energy. After the meeting, get back to work -- either by following-up on things you discussed or by targeting your next
opportunity. * Find common ground in meetings. Try to connect with the job interviewer on a personal level. Even if it's only something as trivial as favorite sports teams, finding common ground can create a positive atmosphere at the outset of your meeting. This may help you navigate trickier waters that arise. * Overcome your ego. Don't spend an entire cover letter listing your great accomplishments and attributes, but fail to tell a company what you can do for it. "Having the right attitude and being aware of the opportunities around you can make fortune work in your favor," says Nadel, who employed this optimistic outlook when founding a marketing promotions firm, Jack Nadel Worldwide back in 1951. Steve Sullivan from KATV channel 7 presented Timmery Adams with the Antony Hobbs Award on April 14th, 2014 at the 5th annual Full Court Awards banquet in Little Rock, AR. Antony Hobbs was a remarkable young man who loved life and especially basketball. Antony was playing for the Little Rock Parkview Patriots when he collapsed on the court and passed away secondary to an undiagnosed heart condition. This award was set up in his memory to honor one female and one male in the state each year that has demonstrated excellence both on and off the court. Nominees must demonstrate high moral character, be a team leader both on and off the court, excel in academics and love life as Antony did. Karen Murphy, a friend of the family, nominated Timmery for this honor. The family CONTINUED ON PAGE ON PAGE 9

said that they were told that there were hundreds of nominations from all over the state for this award, so it truly is an honor for Timmery to have received it. Timmery has accomplished many things in her high school years. She is ranked #1 in her graduating class with a GPA of 4.3 as well as a 4.0 GPA in her 21 completed college hours. She has received many athletic and academic awards. She has been very active in school organizations as well as community events. Timmery has also been able to be an All-District Basketball player, an All-State Track/Pole Vaulter, and member of a 4x State Champion Cross Country team. The most impressive thing about all of this, however, is that Timmery has achieved it all while living with a rare chronic genetic syndrome. Timmery has a condition now known as Primary Ciliary Dyskenesia (with Situs Inversus). Basically, this means that all of Timmery’s internal organs are reversed and that her cilia, the little microscopic hairs throughout our body that “sweep out the bad stuff”, are not functional. She has to do daily treatments such as nasal washes, nebulizers and therapy vest treatments just to help prevent further sinus and lung disease. Timmery is the picture of health on the outside. In fact, since she didn’t come to Acorn until the 10th grade, many of her current classmates have no idea how much of her life she has spent in and out of the hospital. She has had 9 sets of ear tubes, several bronchoscopies, 4 sinus surgeries, an adnoidectomy, a Nissen Fundoplication, as well as countless pneumonias and IV antibiotic rounds to treat infections. Though PCD is something that is constantly presenting new challenges, Timmery refuses to let it get her down. As a matter of fact, Timmery prefers to think that PCD stands for “Perfectly Created Different” and insists that “It is what I have, not who I am.” She says that living with a rare disease just means that you have to push yourself and work a little harder to reach your goals. The good thing is, you truly appreciate what you are able to accomplish because you know what it took to get you there.”
is only a concept. In real life, everday you graduate.
Graduation
is a process that goes on until the last day of your life. If you can grasp that...
YOU’LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

New Cossatot River High School to Hold Grand-Opening
ORIGINAL PUBLICATION DATE - AUGUST 7, 2013
Editors Note: We are re-publishing several archive articles chronicling the new face of education for South Polk County with the consolidation of Van-Cove & Wickes High Schools to form the new Cossatot Eagles.
BY LEANN DILBECK The face of education is certainly changing for South Polk County as the doors of the impressive new Cossatot River High School are set to open this Thursday, August 15, in a ceremony that will begin at 5 p.m. The event will feature various dignitaries such as former State Representative and now the Executive Director of the Rural Education Association Bill Abernathy, Senator Larry Teague, Cossatot River School District Randy Sellars, and others that had not yet been confirmed as of press time. Interim Superintendent Lyndell Martin is excited to be a part of this momentous occasion that will begin an entire new chapter in education for the families of South Polk County. “This is an ideal situation for a consolidated district. The elementary campuses remain the same but now the 7th through 12th grade students are merging into a larger system that will afford them tremendous more opportunities than their rural districts had before,” he commented. Martin explained that it is crucial for students ages 12 and 13 to have opportunities to identify what they are good at and interested in. “We’ll be able to provide a better equipped agri program plus we’ve added soccer, track, golf…and they’re in the process of getting a tennis program together. This will be the second year for a band program, not to mention, all of the advanced course offerings that will better prepare our students for college and life after graduation.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Martin explained that with this world-wide economy we function in today, education has become incredibly competitive. “Business demands so much more from education and we’re well equipped to prepare these students with our workplace readiness curriculum.” For college bound students, there is an increased focus to graduate students that don’t require remedial courses and also produce students that are better able to compete for college scholarships to help off-set the ever rising cost of post-secondary education. While Martin recognizes the situation as “ideal,” he also recognizes that this merge comes with big change, especially logistically. He explained that the new high school and the Wickes Campus will be transfer points for bussed children. “We know that when you have this much change, you are going to encounter some issues but we anticipate those and are prepared for them.” He and the rest of the staff are excited to showcase this mammoth new facility that spans over 2.25 acres, all under one roof, to the community on Thursday and hope, particularly, that all parents and students attending will take advantage of touring the new building. The ribbon cutting will follow the speakers and officials estimate will be held at 5:30 p.m. to be followed by the Open House, “This will be a great time without any time pressure to tour and look around and really give these students an opportunity to get their bearings before the first day of classes.”

The first graduating class of the new Cossatot River High School dedicated a Bronze Eagle statue to the school on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. BY LEANN DILBECK A tremendous crowd turned out for the grand-opening ceremony of the impressive new $15 million Cossatot River High School Thursday evening. Above, Interim Superintendent and members of the Cossatot River School Board proudly cut the ribbon and then opened the doors to the 2.25-acre facility to showcase to the community. Former State Representative and current Executive Director of the Rural Education Association Bill Abernathy was among the speakers. Abernathy was instrumental in facilitating the consolidation of the Van-Cove and Wickes School Districts. He commended the leadership and the communities for their vision. The facility is beautifully situated near the Vandervoort junction and all the materials selected are complimented by the natural beauty of the area. New Cossatot River Eagles Gym Dedicated to Ed Stevenson
May 14, 2014
BY LEANN DILBECK A dedication of the new Cossatot Eagles Gymnasium was held Thursday, October 10, 2013 as black and silver combined to scrimmage in their first combined basketball action since the once rival school districts, Van-Cove and Wickes, merged to play together on the same team. Mr. Ed Stevenson, who himself is a 1954 graduate of Van-Cove, was honored as those in attendance reflected on the numerous contributions made throughout his lifetime to South Polk County communities, as well as that of his father’s, Mr. Eugene Stevenson. Stevenson told The Pulse, “My family and I are very honored to be remembered for the contributions made over the years. I am so thankful to see this merger and truly believe it is one of the most significant developments in South Polk County in the last 50 years.” Stevenson said he is confident that his father was looking down on Thursday and very proud to see the progress made for the people of his hometown area. The event was much more than a basketball game but that of a celebration in which many facets of the community and school had the opportunity to participate in. The Senior Class held a chicken dinner fundraiser with all of the proceeds going back to their alma mater. The band sold snowcones. The Cossatot River FCCLA was selling clothing bearing the new Eagle logo and chances to win a mini-iPad. The Eagles Booster Club was also selling Eagle clothing as well as chances to win a boat. But one of the highlights of the evening was when an estimated 70 spirit-filled mini-Eagle cheerleaders took to the court to demonstrate what they had learned after participating in the first Eagle cheer camp.

FIVE Things You Should Never Say in a Job Interview
(StatePoint) Are you having trouble landing a job and you’re not sure why? The right skills and an impressive resume may get you an interview, but getting hired is another story. Experts say it’s all about presenting your character, personality, abilities and values in a positive, relatable light that is attractive to employers. “There’s no such thing as the perfect response to any question in a job interview,” says Andrea Kay, career columnist and consultant, and author of the new book, “This is How to Get Your Next Job: An Inside Look at What Employers Really Want,” (AMACOM). “But what you talk about in the interview could cost you the job offer if you aren’t careful. These are the top five things Kay says you should never talk about or say in a job interview: • Don’t talk about things you can’t back up. Before you state your claim to a quality that sets you apart, think it through. Just saying you’re a great team player or terrific problem solver doesn’t make it so, even if it’s true. Discuss where, how, and exactly what you did that made you so effective. Be ready to cite one or two examples of how you’ve done what you say you can do. • Never say “I have good people skills.” The words are so overused they mean nothing. Consider what it is you do that makes you effective when dealing with others. Are you good at working through difficult issues with co-workers? Do you have a knack for writing and talking to customers in a way that explains things? Tell interviewers about that instead. • Never say “I just want to learn.” Employers aren`t in business to teach, but rather to deliver a service or product. An interview is an opportunity to show an employer how you can apply what you know to the business. So rather than focus solely on your eagerness to learn, tell an interviewer how you will use the skills you have begun to develop to solve problems. CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

FIVE Things You Should Never Say in a Job Interview (CONTINUED)
• Avoid too much personal information that has nothing to do with your qualifications. Don’t talk about why you need the job (even if you do have a hard-luck story about sick children or a spouse whose been laid off). Don’t talk about politics, religion or sexual preferences. When a person can’t leave personal issues at home, it makes an employer wonder: does he lack the necessary maturity and good judgment? Is her personal life such a wreck that she may not be dependable? • Don’t talk about irrelevant things that pop into your head. To be less impulsive, literally practice interviewing. Slow down, count to five, and give yourself a chance to consider how your comment will sound. More job search tips and information from Kay can be found at www.AndreaKay.com. If your search for employment has been frustrating, consider your interviewing technique. A few tweaks to your approach could mean a fantastic job offer.

Turning Your Passion Into A Career
(StatePoint) There's nothing better than getting paid to do what you love, but few people know how to turn their interests into careers. "Turning your passion into a career requires unreasonable and unrelenting pursuit of your goals. It's about mapping out what you want to do and planning a route to get there" says Lee Witt, a musician, corporate consultant and author who successfully changed careers in mid-life. In his new book, "The BrickHouse Band: How An Ordinary Mid-Life Couple Created A Business Phenomenon," Witt reveals how he and his wife, while busy with full-time careers, founded a band that became one of the most successful corporate and casino cover bands on the West Coast. "It's not enough to want something; you have to plan well," he advises. KNOW YOUR DESTINATION Many people know what they like, but few have clear visions of what they want their lives to look like. You have to know your destination before you can map out how to get there. Does successfully living your passion mean making millions? Critical acclaim and recognition? Helping others? Figure this out first and then plan your route. Start by making a list of experiences you've had in your desired field and any marketable skills that came from these experiences. This will help you be realistic about the resources you have, those you'll need, and the actions required to bridge the gap between the two.
Page 27
KNOW YOUR ROUTE With your destination in mind, create a mission statement or vision plan. This will help clarify your goals. "The most important question you should always be asking yourself is 'Is what I'm doing now advancing me towards my destination?'" says Witt. "This will help you prioritize responsibilities and commitments." Most importantly, beware the "shiny object syndrome." This happens when you're traveling your desired route and get distracted by a shiny new idea, project or person. When this happens, Witt suggests you remind yourself about where you want to be and confer with your career map. If this is an unauthorized stop, keep moving! REST AND RE-FUEL While you don't want to get distracted from your destination, you will need to stop and re-fuel, regardless of your journey. You may even want to sightsee for a while by settling into a comfortable job to gain experience you need. But passionate professionals know rest stops are for re-fueling, not unpacking. Your fuel for your new, passion-filled career will consist of the reasons behind it. Is it for money? For love? To serve the planet? For recognition? None of these reasons is right or wrong, but knowing your reasons will keep you going when the going gets tough, says Witt. More tips on turning your passion into a career can be found on Witt's website www.BrickHouse Leadership.com.
