Petition postponed Jeri Borst j.borst@mypulsenews.com

A movement to bring alcohol sales to the ballot in Polk county has been postponed. According to social media post by the Committee for Growth in Polk County, the decision to halt the petition drive was made public July 16. “We were ready in March this year with a proven plan and volunteers to begin collecting signatures,” said Rick Chrisman, treasurer for the committee. “COVID just made us pull back we couldn’t ask our volunteers to go door-to-door.” Because the petition can only be placed on the ballot during major and mid-term elections, the committee thought best to wait until 2022. “The COVID19 virus caused the loss of three months of canvassing,” he continued. “We made a very intense effort through publicized signing sites.” However, Chrisman said collecting signatures without being able to go door-toPETITION CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

FBI releases Barry Seal documents

After a barrage of requests from media outlets, the FBI released more than 1,000 pages of its file on Adler Berriman “Barry” Seal on July 15th. A joint investigation by the FBI, Arkansas State Police and IRS revealed that Barry Seal used the Mena airport Barry Seal in 1982 for “smuggling activity” from late 1980 until March, 1984, according to the documents released last week. A pilot, Seal moved much of his smuggling operation from Baton Rouge to Rich Mountain Aviation at Mena Intermountain Airport, according to the May 1986 FBI memo. Seal is purported to have flown guns to South America from Mena and drugs back into the United States, according to the memo. In February 1986, Seal was killed in a hail of machine-gun fire outside a Baton Rouge Salvation Army halfway house. Seal’s mysterious activities have spawned books and the popular 2017 movie “American Made”, starring Tom Cruise. A 1983 entry in the recently released documents referred to a telephone conversation between the FBI and Polk County Sheriff A.L. Hadaway. According to the document, Hadaway said an informant told him a “narcotic smuggling operation” was headquartered out of the Mena airport and that a man named Barry from Baton Rouge was in charge of it. If you are interested in reading the FBI documents released on July 15, you can go online to: vault.fbi. gov/recently-added. Part one consists of 472 pages, while part two contains 552 pages. Only about 25 pages of the documents refer to Arkansas or Mena. Many names in the documents have been redacted.

OLT Entertains with Socially Distant Shows Ouachita Little Theatre has been studying the practicalities of producing shows that will safely fall within the guidelines of the Governor’s proclamations. Due to the expense and challenges producing the musical “BIG”, that show is still postponed until it can be executed safely. However, it would be possible to do some dramatic “Reader’s Theatre” type of performances live on stage, and the board of directors have come up with their first offering.

Scotty Jenkins has agreed to direct the classic tale of a person who perseveres toward justice against all odds in “Twelve Angry Jurors.” As this play does not require a lot of movement, and ac-tors can be socially distanced, this is an excellent choice for actors to show their skills and emotional range. He has chosen a cast and will begin rehearsals immediately.

In November 2018 voters in Little River and Arkansas counties voted in favor of legaliza tion, which brought the total of wet counties to 40 out of 7 5, or 53 percent.

With hopes to renew petition efforts in 2021, Chrisman said he and John V acca hope to find additional volunteer support and elect officers for the committee. “ We are willing to advise and support the continued operations of the committee for the 2022 election” Chrisman said, noting that

Though the committee was able to gather more than 1,000 signatures, approximately 3,000 additional signatures were needed to meet req uirements. “ With only three weeks left to get those signatures... it just wasn’t going to happen,” Chrisman said. According to state law, 38 percent registered voters in the county must sign the petition, which amounts

‘For all have sinned and fallen short of the Grace of God. And are justified freely by His Grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.’ Romans 3:13,24 ‘For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Romans 6:23 ‘For by Grace are ye saved, and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God through Jesus Christ.’ Ephesisans 2:8 ‘But what does is say? The word is near you, it is in your mouth and in your heart, the word of faith we are proclaiming that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.’ Romans 10:8-9 ‘For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ Romans 10:13 It is so simple isn’t it. Who can miss it? Yet, many do. Why? Because many folks want to be their own God, and miss everything. The providence of God now, and Heaven later. Bad choice! I tried this in 1959. I now affirm that, after over sixty years, it works. God is always good for His Word. Try it, it works! No magic formula, just a heart that wants to know Him.
