hree local members of Team Arkansas competed in the National Special Olympics on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington last week and Monday morning, Mena Mayor George McKee declared the day as Maddie Fletcher Day, Krista Carstens Day and Jesse Ezell Day in recognition of their achievements. Mena High School Independent Living teacher, Elizabeth Tompkins is the Area Director for Area 14 for the Special Olympics and she stated it was an experience of a lifetime. “They got to do things and see things that they have never been exposed to in Arkansas,” Tompkins said. “They got to meet new athletes and made new friends. They rose above the challenge that we put forth for them. They shined and they are leaders that nobody ever knew existed.” Maddie said it was so exciting. “I got gold in the 50-meter butterfly and a bronze in the 50-meter freestyle,” Maddie said. “But they did not have BBQ or sweet tea in Seattle.” Krista placed 5th in the 100-meter dash and the Team Arkansas 4 X 100-meter relay team won a silver medal on Thursday, SPECIAL OLYMPICS CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

LOCAL CMA CHAPTER IN TOP TEN FUNDRAISERS NATIONALLY

un for the Son is the fundraiser for Christian Motorcyclists Association. This international foundation has its headquarters in Hatﬁeld. CMA’s Run for the Son started as an effort to provide one motorcycle to a pastor in Guatemala. From that simple beginning, Run for the Son has now provided transportation to more than 13,000 pastors, evangelists and Christian workers around the world. Over the past thirty years, CMA has been able to extend the open arms of Christ to millions of people around the world as a result of the funds raised for Run for the Son. By partnering with three like-minded ministries, CMA has been able to place the message of hope and salvation in front of millions of people in 192 countries throughout the world. Since its beginning, Run for the Son has raised over 69 million dollars to help spread the message of salvation through Christ, resulting in over 24 million salvations. Each CMA chapter is invited to collect money during the year through donations and fundraisers for this cause. On June 21, at the National Rally, it was announced that the total raised for the year ending May, 2018 was $4,769,143.37. From this amount,

the three ministry partner organizations were given over $900,000 each. The top ten chapters throughout the nation which raised the most funds were announced. The local Home Front Warriors Chapter was number four in the nation with

$41,832.49 having been given to Run for the Son. Members of the Home Front Warriors were asked to go on stage to be recognized. Roger Marney is president of the local CMA group. Home Front Warriors

Members of the local Home Front Warriors Chapter was reconized for being the number four fundraiser for the CMA’s Run for the Sun efforts. CMA President Roger Marney presented the honored the chapter during the CMA’s National Rally on June 21st. The local chapter raised $41,832.49.

MENA REGIONAL HOSPITAL REPORTS INCREASE IN ADMISSIONS D

uring the June meeting of the Mena Regional Health System Board of Directors, hospital CEO/Administrator Jay Quebedeaux reported the hospital had a good month in May. He stated admissions are up over last year and there have been more outpatient registrations. According to Quebedeaux’s report, the hospital’s average daily census is up to 24.3 this year. Last year, the average daily census was 19.7. Quebedeaux explained that’s a big deal with Medicaid reimbursement. He also reported there have been 720 admissions, 103 babies born and 3,830 people have visited the

hospital’s emergency room. Quebedeaux informed the board that the hospital staff was still gathering cost beneﬁt information about a new electronic ER medical records system that would interface with the hospital’s current computer systems. Quebedeaux stated the system would cost about $8,500 a month, but would help ensure procedures are coded properly for billing purposes. He stated the hospital’s current paper coding system costs $1,500 a month. Mena Regional Health System is also attempting to recruit a family practitioner for its staff.

Partners are currently working on developing a website that will allow educators across the nation to have access to the lesson plans created by Arkansas teachers. “This program is a great learning experience for teachers and students,” said Cassandra Barnett, the ADE program advisor for school libraries. “Teachers who participate receive extensive training and support from history and art experts throughout the

development of the lesson plans. Because of the hard work of these teachers, students have the opportunity to explore real world issues using art and historic objects. We want our students to see that the past can inform our present, and through civic engagement, they can impact our future.” The program recently began its fourth year, with applications for the fifth year scheduled to open in January 2019.

Fletcher and Ezell are Mena High School students and Carstens is a member of the Polk County Developmental Center. Team Arkansas has 125 members including 72 athletes, 23 Unified Partners, and 30 coaches. Athletes competed in 11 sports including softball, basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, powerlifting, soccer, swimming, track and field, and stand up paddle boarding.

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVES REPORTS OF UTILITY SCAM P olk County Sheriff Scott Sawyer announced his ofﬁce has received several calls from local businesses about a utility scam. Sawyer reported a couple of the businesses were scammed out of money. According to the report, callers are posing as a local utility company like SWEPCO or REA and telling business owners that their electricity will be cut off unless they pay the past due amount immediately. The caller informs the business that they can pay with a credit card or they can provide them with the number from a pre-paid gift card or green dot card. Sawyer stated the phone call is the

ﬁrst clue that it’s a scam, because local utility companies do not call businesses in reference to past due accounts. He said the second clue is the request for a credit card number. Sawyer stated local utility companies would not ask for a customer’s credit card number over the phone. He also stated legitimate business won’t ask a customer to purchase a green dot card or pre-paid debit card. Sawyer said if you receive a call from someone claiming to be from a local utility company that you should hang up and contact the local utility ofﬁce and verify your account.

LOIS JANETTE HEATH Lois Janette Heath age 89, of Farmington formerly of Mena, Arkansas passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018 in Farmington, Arkansas. She was born on October 3, 1928 in Cotton Valley, Louisiana to the late George and Nellie Simms Buckliew. She loved her church family at Lakeview Baptist where she taught classes and was very involved in the church. Her hobbies were sewing, reading, and quilting. She won many ribbons at the fair for her quilts. She was in the first graduating class of Rich Mountain Community College, where she received an associates degree in 1983. Lois was also a nurse’s aide at the old Mena Hospital on the hill, drove buses for the Mena School and was a cook in the cafeteria. Lois enjoyed being the living assistant at Avants Group Living Center and was Manager of the first PCDC Resale Store in Mena. She was the epitome of the Proverbs 31 woman, and her children rise up and call her blessed. Lois was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her son Stephen David Heath and wife Jackie of Heath Valley. Daughters Frances Heath McCarthy of Heath Valley, Ginger Hamrick and husband Terry of Farmington, Arkansas; Susan Bodey and husband Kenny of Mena, Arkansas Grandchildren Dalton Heath, Ethan Heath, Sarah Heath, Matt McCarthy, Starlet McCarthy, Karyn Dodson, Cody McCarthy, Laura Smith, Franklin Hamrick, David Hamrick, Mandy Babb, Aaron Bodey, Jacob Bodey, and Kendra Bodey Twenty-one great grandchildren. Mrs. Kenlinn Trivette, age 78, of Mena, Arkansas passed away Friday, June 29, 2018 in Hot Springs National Park. She was born July 27, 1939 to the late Kenneth Barthlomew and the late Evelyn Boles Barthlomew. Kenlinn was happily married to her husband of 60 years, George Trivette, Sr. She worked for Lake Erie Door and was a fine homemaker. She enjoyed computer games, was a power shopper! But her real love was her family, and her best times were spent with them. Kenlinn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend to all. She will be dearly missed. SURFACING PROJECT GOOD FOR POLK COUNTY

he Polk County Road Department is working on the 2018 surfacing project and according to Polk County Judge Brandon Ellison’s office, the project started in the winter of 2017. Ellison said roads and portions of roads including Polk 57 between Nunley and Board Camp, Polk 401 in the Old Dallas area, Polk 51 and 299 east of Mena, East Boundary Road near Mena, Polk 31 between Hatfield and Cove, and Polk 282 near Hatfield are including in the project. He said approximately 90 percent of the roads and portions of roads that are included in this 9.3-mile project were completely rebuilt. Ellison said road crews began by removing pavement, did some widening, elevated sub-grades in low areas, and replaced or added some drainage structures. He said after compaction was complete, a road base was added and “set-up” began for the surfacing operation. Ellison said a small concrete bridge was also constructed on Polk 57.

Ellison reported surfacing consists of the application of primer oil, followed by two layers of asphalt emulsion and crushed aggregate chips. He explained there is a 3 to 14 day delay between the application of primer and hard surfacing. Ellison reported he submitted a project that could possibly be eligible for limited funding under the Secure Rural Schools Act. He also announced the county will be reimbursed for a portion of the Polk 57 project by the US Forestry Service through the Resource Advisory Committee. Ellison said the county would be awarded $266,970.55 following the completion of the project. In addition to that funding, the City of Mena will reimburse Polk County $33,013.50 for the city’s half of the cost on the shared border road of East Boundary. In total, the cost for all of the roads and portions of roads that were listed above, including equipment, material, and labor will be an estimated $850,000, or a net cost of $550,000 after reimbursements.

MICHAEL JAMES CLEGG Michael James Clegg, age 42, of Mena, Arkansas, died Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at the Mena Regional Health System. He was born on Tuesday, April 20, 1976 to Johnnie Clarence and Jill Treadwell Clegg in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Michael was a member of the Covenant of Life Church in Mena. He worked for M&PC Lawn Service for the past two years and was proud of getting his GED. Michael liked to listen to old rock and spend all the time he could with his family. His kids were incredibly important to him and were his guiding light. Michael was a loving husband, son, father, brother, uncle, and friend and will be missed by all who knew him. dricks, age 85, of Acorn, Arkansas, died Saturday, June 30, 2018 at home. He was born on Friday, August 5, 1932 to Sidney Hillard and Lethea Vivian Barnett Hendricks in Plain Dealing, Louisiana. Charles was an open book and always told it like it is. He was a member of the Cove First Baptist Church and read the bible through and through. Charles served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict eventually becoming the youngest instructor in the Air Force Technical Training School. He was self employed running the Century Communication Company in Tampa, Florida from 1965 to 1980 when he moved to Mena. Charles was passionate about his work and very knowledgeable in residential and business phone systems. OUACHITA RIVER BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES PURCHASE OF NEW SOUND EQUIPMENT embers of the Ouachita River M School District Board of Education met June 25th on the Acorn campus for their June board meeting. Following an executive session, board members voted to accept the resignation of Kathy Padilla and Ernie Brumfield. They also voted to hire Shauna Wagner a SPED Paraprofessional on the Acorn campus. Board members approved several changes to the school district’s student handbook and they approved a change order for the Acorn cafetorium project. A motion was made by Cheryl Boyd to accept a bid from Goss Electronics of Mena in the amount of $19,162.50 for the cafetorium’s sound equipment. Board members accepted a

Tips Taps bid for computers for the Acorn Business Lab in the amount of $12,375. They also renewed a contract with Gabbert for the maintenance of the Ouachita River School District website. Boyd made a motion to approve the district’s elementary school curriculum ELA bid of $58,716.13. Board members also gave Superintendent Jerry Strasner authorization to transfer any allowable operating funds above $715,000 to the building fund in accordance with Arkansas law. Strasner also updated the board on the progress of the camera system and door installation. Board members also approved a $500 year-end bonus for all current employees of the district.

WHEN GOD DOES NOT HEAL, WHAT THEN?

WE all enjoy It when someone shares with us the blessing of Divine healing. We rejoice with them, and we should. But there is another side which must also be acknowledged as the Hand of God at work in our lives. For every testimony of healing there are many who have prayed, who have gone through the Biblical plan for healing, and were not healed. What is the answer to the question of “why”? First of all we must acknowledge the absolute sovereignty of God, and we then must know that He loves all of His “kids”, and does not have “favorites.” In the parable of the Prodigal son, the one son messed up his life, but at no point did the father stop loving him, and at no point do we see him loving one son more than the other. And then we need to remember that when Jesus was teaching those first believers how to pray, He gave to them the “model” prayer, and in that prayer, right up front He said “…Thy will be done…” (Mt. 6:9). In every prayer of every kind, for every purpose there must always be the submission of the one praying to the “will of God.” And, as we are told in the Scriptures, and as we have experienced in life, His will and our will are not always the same. Would that it were, but it isn’t. So how should we respond when God doesn’t heal? Well, it doesn’tJanuary mean that6,He2016 doesn’t care, for He always cares for His kids, each of them, and not just the “super spiritual.” Jesus made it clear that His love for “the least of these” was just as real as i11t is for those who may walk a bit closer to Him day by day. His love is not conditioned on our achievement in the Walk; it is conditioned by His own love for us. Second, we need to be very careful that in our prayer, for healing or anything else, that we do not pray against the purpose of God. And while some may think that healing is for everyone at all times, the great apostle Paul knew better. Paul had a problem. There is reason to believe that he was losing his eyesight. In Galatians 4: 15 Paul complimented the Galatians that they would have plucked out their own eyes “and given them to me.” In II Corinthians (12: 8,9) Paul said that he prayed three times that God would remove his “thorn in the flesh” (v. 7). God did not, Paul understood and accepted God’s will in the matter. He wrote “And He has said to me ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness, most gladly I will therefore boast in my weakness (his “thorn in the flesh”) that the power of Christ might tabernacle over me.” Third, we must remember that God’s goal for us is nothing other than the creation of the exact image of Jesus Christ in us, and that can, and often does, bring some painful experiences. Peace comes to us when we yield to His Plan, His will, in whatever it may be. Healing? Yes! Absolutely, but only when it is the will of God! And sometimes, as with Paul, His purpose overshadows our purposes. We want to be healed. Why? So that we can honor Him? Or is there some other reason? Can we not honor Him where we are? Can circumstances rule us? Can sickness keep us from our role as witnesses to Him and His saving Grace? The answer is obvious. Yielding to Him and to His purpose for our lives does two major things.
