“Field of Dreams” Next OLT Free Movie Baseball season is in full swing all over America. The crack of the bat, the smell of freshly mown grass, the chatter from the dugout; it’s all part of our national summer experience. And baseball is quite possibly the most romantic of all sports. It’s why little boys have collected baseball cards since the 1950’s, and why fathers and sons play catch, and why Hollywood has made more movies about baseball than any other sport. It just tugs at our heartstrings. And it is why baseball is called America’s past time.

“Field of Dreams” is a romantic look at baseball, no doubt. But at its heart, it is a movie about family. It is a fantasy with a notably weird premise. Kevin Costner plays Ray Kinsella, a young husband and father who is a novice farmer in rural Iowa. One summer evening, he hears a “voice” that tells him, “If you build it, he will come.” He’s not sure why, but he feels like if he mows down his cornfield and builds a baseball field in the middle of his farm, that Shoeless Joe Jackson will appear. Shoeless Joe was a real life member of the famed “Black Sox” scandal of 1919 whereby the professional baseball players took money to throw the World Series. And Ray is right. Shoeless

Sonlighters Card Shop will host a closing sale June 18th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at 5, the Sonlighters Card Shop will close its doors for good.

The Sonlighters Card Shop has been a staple of the Polk County since the 80’s when the Day Spring card company started donating cards that had slight defects to Joan Sparks who worked with other volunteers to

He continues to hear the voice, telling him to do more things. The film builds up to one of the most touching final scenes in any movie. It is notorious for making grown men cry. If you’ve never seen this film, no spoilers here; you just need to visit the Ouachita Little Theatre on Wednesday, June 13th, to see it for yourself. Made in 1989, this movie was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

In addition to Costner, it stars James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, Amy Madigan, and Burt Lancaster in his final role in film. “Field of Dreams” became part of the Library of Congress U.S. National Film Registry in 2017, recognized for being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.”

Rated PG for mild language, it is a movie for all ages.

Visit the OLT at 6 p.m. to see what The Lyric Players will do to tie their short performance into our baseball theme. The movie will start at 6:30 p.m., the popcorn will be hot and ready. All concessions are $1 and admission is free, but donations are always welcome.

Davis wins Little Rock Golf Tour Championship Two local golfers competed on the 9-year-old Little Rock Local Golf Tour this spring.

Rich Davis and Marcus Graves of Mena competed in eight tournaments that started on March 3 at the Centennial Valley Golf Tournament. The tour championship was held June 2nd at the Burns Park Golf Course.

Davis placed first in the Burns Park tournament and received 60 championship points by shooting 5-over par. Graves finished the tournament in third place and earned 30 championship points after shooting 6-over par.

Davis also won the tour championship with 237.5 points. Graves finished the tour in fourth place with 104 points.

A Staple of Polk County to Close its Doors

form the Sonlighters Card Shop on De Queen Street. The card shop served as a place where seniors, age 55 and older, could purchase greeting cards for literally all occasions at discounted prices.

Offering affordable cards to seniors was the mission of the shop and all monies raised were donated back to worthy causes in the community.

The card shop on De Queen Street was destroyed during a tornado in 2009.

But, thanks to the generosity of Roy and Cathy Anderle the Sonlighters Card Shop reopened on September 15th of 2009 on Highway 8 West.

Cathy stated she first learned of Sonlighters while her son was serving in Iraq. She said he and other soldiers

were unable to purchase cards in Iraq that contained scriptures that they could send home to family members.

So, Sonlighters gave cards to Cathy to share with her son and his fellow soldiers.

The card shop has been open since the 80’s but will close its doors for the final time following the June 18th sale.

egislators and business leaders have made it a priority to encourage more Arkansas students to graduate from college with a degree or a certificate proving that they have learned a core set of job skills.

The overall prosperity of a state depends in large part on the educational level of its citizens.

That was one of the reasons the legislature changed the funding formula for state colleges and universities last year. State aid to higher education will no longer rely so much on enrollment, and instead will be based more on the number of graduates who successfully complete their studies.

After changing the method of funding colleges and universities, the legislature then added $10 million to state aid during the fiscal session earlier this year. The hope is that additional state aid will allow institutions to hold down tuition increases.

In a letter to presidents and chancellors of Arkansas universities, the governor noted that tuition at their institutions had gone up from 3 percent to more than 6 percent a year over the past 10 years.

He challenged universities to freeze tuition next year, and he challenged twoyear colleges to hold any increase to the level of inflation.

According to a report by the Southern Regional Education Board on the afford-

ability of higher education in Arkansas, “Tuition and fees at both public four-year and public two-year institutions in Arkansas have been growing much more rapidly than either inflation or family income.” That report described tuition increases from 2006 through 2014.

Research indicates that one of the important reasons that students don’t finish college is that they have problems paying for it. Even for students with financial aid, tuition and fees eat up a high percentage of their family’s income.

In the past few weeks, the boards of trustees of higher education institutions have been meeting to set tuition and fees for the 2018 fall semester. The universities have accepted the challenge and held tuition to this year’s levels, but they have increased mandatory fees.

Tuition will remain unchanged at the five four-year campuses in the University of Arkansas system. They are in Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Little Rock, Monticello and Pine Bluff. However, fees will go up at all the campuses. Tuition for the system’s seven two-year colleges will go up, but by less than 2.1 percent.

Arkansas State University in Jonesboro will also hold tuition to current levels, although fees will go up. The ASU system has four two-year colleges, and fees will go up slightly at three of them. ASU Mid South in West Memphis will not raise

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Opioid Crisis – the Other Side Have you noticed for the last three years that all the publicity about opioids has been negative? I believe there is also a side to this crisis that needs to be addressed. For people who have legitimate health issues that cause excruciating amounts of pain, these pain pills are crucial in getting pain relief and giving people the ability to have any quality of life. I have read articles in newspapers and heard many stories on the news about people who abuse these drugs and overdose. The loss of life is always sad and tragic no matter what the circumstances.

However, there are also people who commit suicide because they can no longer stand their pain and view suicide as their only way out. Unfortunately, this is a very common occurrence. I have experienced this first hand with a family member and a friend. These suicides are, in my opinion, the most tragic because they could have been prevented with simple pain relief.

I am a Vietnam War Veteran. I have had nine major surgeries throughout my lifetime.

Each surgery has left me with more pain and severe arthritis. I have no choice but to take prescription pain medication to get pain relief so that I can function in my every day life.

The May report from the Department of Finance and Administration indicates that for the first 11 months of the fiscal year, revenue collections are on a pace to generate a budget surplus of $44 million.

Net general revenue for the year-todate is about $4.9 billion, or 3.3 percent more than last year. painkillers because there are some people who abuse them, but what about the people who need them and have never abused them? The point is that the people who really need these pain medications have also been affected by this crisis. They can’t even get enough pain medication now to have a good quality of life. If someone has legitimate health problems that cause pain, then they should be able to get the amount of pain medications that they need to have to lead a good quality of life. It is very unfortunate that a person has to go out of town and sometimes out of state, to get the amount of pain medication that they need to have any quality of life.

In conclusion, opioid abuse is a problem that has been addressed by doctors and congress in a very unfair way. They have decided to take pain medication away from everyone. The media is constantly talking about one side of the opioid crisis but they never report on the other side of the crisis.

That side is that people who have legitimate health issues with severe pain can’t get the pain medication that they need. It is not fair to punish these people, who have never abused pain medication, for the problems and abuse of others. In trying to fix one crisis they have created another one.

Polk County Receives Unpaved Roads Grant Award G overnor Asa Hutchinson, Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC) Executive Director Mike Preston, AEDC VP Operations Amy Fecher and AEDC Division of Rural Services Director Alex Johnston presented $331,179.00 to 7 Arkansas counties at an awards ceremony on May 24th in Little Rock. The counties were selected for

funding through the fiscal year 2018 Arkansas Unpaved Roads Grant Program.

In attendance were representatives receiving an Arkansas Unpaved Roads Grant Program award on behalf of Polk County. Polk County received $20,686.00 in matching funds for the replacement of a concrete bridge which crosses Mack's Creek, a major tributary to

RAPTURE OR NOT? As we move toward the “last days” more and more interest is being generated by the word “rapture”. And it is one of the most misunderstood words in the English language.

“Rapture” is not a Biblical word, neither does it refer to the return of Christ for His Church. Please read on.

Rapture, by definition means something quite different than the common understanding. Statements like “are you ready for the rapture?” And questions like “who is going in the rapture” demonstrate a lack of knowledge of Scriptural teaching. Hear me out.

Webster’s Dictionary defines rapture in this way: “The state of being carried with joy, love, ecstasy… an expression of great joy, pleasure.” Rapture, by definition, is an emotional experience of unparalleled joy and “ecstasy.” By definition it has nothing to do with the doctrine that so many associated with it.

The Biblical doctrine that many, if not most, folks refer to when they use the word, is, literally the doctrine of the great “catching away,” or the great “kidnapping,” or some other such term. From I Thessalonians chapter four come these words: “For the Lord Himself will come down from Heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first, After that, we who are still alive and are left will be CAUGHT UP with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever”(I Thes. 4: 16, 17).

And it is exactly at this point where “rapture” comes in! All who have loved Him in this life and who have watched anxiously for His return, will experience a joy, an ecstasy beyond imagination, for the very first time being in His visible Presence. It is this “rapture” that all of the truly regenerated will experience! It is what we look for!

So, when, and if, you are one of those who does not believe in “rapture,” try to imagine being in His presence without it! It will be impossible for those of us who love Him now to be in His presence without that joy beyond imagination, beyond description.

They will hear His Words “enter into the joy of the Lord” (Mt. 25: 21). The alternative is horrible beyond imagination: “depart from Me… I never knew you” (Mt. 7: 21-23).

Can we deny this “rapture”?

As to the doctrinal side of the thing we need only to read the text in I Thessalonians 4, and once we know the meaning of the Greek word is that is translated “caught up,” that part of the problem will clear up also. So what is that word, and what does it mean?

The word is “Harpadzo” and it means to “take away by force.” And the force will be the power of the almighty God! And so it will be! Those of us who “remain” until the coming of the Lord will experience Harpadzo! And we will be glad! We will rejoice, and the angels will even be jealous of us.

I don’t know about anyone else, but, as for me, I look forward with great anticipation to the experience of actually being with Him! More than just on the spiritual level. Do you?

Downtown Mena Accepted into Arkansas Downtown Network Community SUBMITTED Judy Thompson of the Mena Downtown Partners reported Downtown Mena has been accepted into the Arkansas Downtown Network community.

According to Thompson, Mena Downtown Partners applied for Arkansas Downtown Network status and several local residents made a presentation before the Main Street Arkansas Advisory Board in Little Rock.

Downtown Mena was notified of its acceptance as an Arkansas Downtown Network community earlier this year, however the official certificate presentation was not made until Monday at the Mena City Hall. In attendance for the presentation was Gar Eisele, Judy McClara, Thomp-

son, Rick Chrisman, Matt Thomas, Ashley Smith, Mayor George McKee and Becky Horton.

The Arkansas Downtown Network is a program that works to serve Arkansas communities that are focused on revitalizing their historic commercial core. The program was created to offer resources and education to communities who are not able to commit to the level of certified Main Street towns in an effort to both revitalize their built environment and build the capacity to become a certified Main Street community.

Pat was born on June 2, 1942 in DeQueen, Arkansas to the late Roscoe Cleveland Chambers and the late Glenda Imogene Gilbert Nichols and was happily married to Mike Peek for 58 years until his recent death in May of 2018. She owned and operated the Plum Tree Dress Shop in Mena for 14 years and enjoyed reading and working in her flower beds when she was able. She was also an avid Razorback fan. Pat truly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister and will be dearly missed by all including her little dog Precious.

She is survived by her Sons Michael Scott Peek and wife Lisa of Danville, Arkansas; Gregory Trent Peek and wife Paula of Mena, Arkansas. Daughter Shannon Charise Mendoza and husband Avel of Mena, Arkansas. Grandchildren Kayla Morris, Chase Peek and Tori Peek of Danville, Arkansas; Corie Bush and Taylor Peek of Cove, Arkansas; Tate Mendoza of Mena, Arkansas; Reed Mendoza of Lincoln, Arkansas.

Great-Grandchildren Preslea and Landry Morris; Emmitt and Fletcher Peek; Avenlei and Malloree Bush; Jaxon Mullen; Blair and Rhodes Mendoza. Sister-in-law Betty Lukens and a host of other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Glen Chambers and Brotherin-law Charles Lukens.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Brother Daniel Morris officiating at Beasley Wood Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of Beasley Wood Funeral Home. Family and friends visitation will be Monday, June 11, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Norma grew up in Mena, Arkansas and graduated from Mena High School.

She worked for a short time at the county courthouse, before dating and marrying the love of her life, Barry Drager, in 1964.

When she was not on the road between Mena and Houston, she built a business with Barry and raised two children. She had the most fun of her life with her six wonderful grandchildren. She once said if she had known how great it was to be a Grandmother, she would have done it first.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five of her nine siblings, Brothers William Edward Mitchell, Jimmie Newton Mitchell, Raymond Leon Mitchell and Sisters Jewel Mitchell Hilton and Helen Ray Mitchell. She is survived by her husband Barry Drager, Sr., her brother Kenneth Ray Mitchell, her sisters Lois Elwanda Mitchell Harper and Sylvia Mitchell Ventris, her daughter Jenise Drager Ehrlich and son-in-law Daryl Ehrlich and son Barry Drager Jr. (BJ) and daughter-in-law Brandye dragger. She is also survived by grandchildren Westin Ehrlich and wife Chelcie, Landin Ehrlich, Lane Daniel Drager, Morgin Ehrlich, Georgia Drager and Cook Drager.

Visitation was Friday, June 8th at the Beasley Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9th at the Board Camp Baptist Church at 1 p.m.

A memorial service were held Friday, June 8, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Hatfield, Arkansas with Brother Scott O’ Rear officiating. Cremation services were entrusted to Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena, Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting new stuffed animals be donated in Mystrey’s honor and then will be donated to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital after the service.

GEORGE AARON HEATH

George Aaron Heath, age 73, of Mena, died Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at the Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab in Mena. He was born on Sunday, December 17, 1944 to Robert Steve and Laura Belle Lewis Heath in Hartford, Arkansas.

MR. MARION WILLIAM MANNING Mr. Marion William Manning, age 83, of Mena, Arkansas passed away Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Mena, Arkansas.

He was born July 14, 1935 in Black Springs, Arkansas to the late Henry Arthur Manning and Jessie Lorene Hughes. Bill, always Mickey to his wife, graduated in May, 1954 from Hico High School in Ruston, Louisiana. Bill was united in marriage to Roberta in California on January 18, 1958. We lived and traveled all over Europe – what fun and an education for all of us.

He retired after 20 years in San Antonio, Texas.

He graduated from Lady of the Lake University and earned his CPA. Bill loved to fish, hunt and play golf. He was an avid sports NBA fan. The 10 years before retiring, he became President of a corporation owned by a Japanese family who owned multiple golf courses and country clubs in San Antonio. They spoke no English and Bill’s southern tongue couldn’t quite handle Japanese, but it was fun and he loved them all and the job. Then it was time to retire to the green mountains of Arkansas and his “white cows”. Bill enjoyed coaching little

league baseball, playing basketball, hunting, fishing and golfing. He was a member of the U. S. Air Force and he and his family traveled all over Europe, stationed in Spain and later in the mountains of Germany. He was always a Christian, a gentleman and a wonderful man, husband, father, grandpa (Pawkey) and always had time for us. We will miss him until we meet again in God’s Heaven.

Survivors are wife Roberta Ann Manning.

Nephews Edward Napper, Jimmy Manning, Ricky and Bill Stephenson, Lane and John Osbon, Tom Ford and Timothy Cooper and Kip Gilligan. Nieces Deannie Conner, Cheryl Osbon, Barbara Sherrill, Mandy Napper. Special daughter Annabelle Eckert of Frankfurt, Germany.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Calvin Manning, sister Hazel Irene Napper and infant son Michael Alan Manning.

Bill was sent for cremation under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas with Rev. Kenny Fant officiating.

Billy Walker, age 79, of Cove, Arkansas, died Friday, June 1, 2018 at Rich Mountain Nursing and Rehab. He was born on Saturday, February 18, 1939 to George Franklin and Hazel Mildred Vantrease Walker in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Billy loved his country and served in the United States Army for 30 years as well as the United States Marine Corps for 4 years. He enjoyed working on cars and shooting his guns.

Billy was a great thinker and was a very patient man. His wife was the most important guiding light in his life. Billy was a member of the NRA and was very proud of his time spent with the military serving the country. Billy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a great friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Billy is survived by his wife, Marilyn Walker of Cove; two sons and daughter in law, Greg and Debra Walker of St. Joseph, Missouri and Jay Walker of Cove; three grandchildren, Alexis Walker, Trenten Walker, and Luke Walker all of St. Joseph, Missouri; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Noble Learning Center in Cove with Brother Steve Squires officiating. Interment followed at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cove. General visitation was during business hours at Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena.

Pallbearers will be Harold Harris, Lloyd Kindrich, and Henry Kindrich.

Mrs. Olivia Marie Martin Moreland,88 of Conway, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018 at her home.

Olivia was born in Mena, Arkansas on August 14, 1929 to the late John Wesley Martin and Olivia Boberg Martin. She was married to the late John Clifton Bain for many years. Mrs. Moreland was an LPN during her working career. Marie loved to laugh and spend time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Morleand also enjoyed country western dancing, and continued dancing into her 80’s. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to all.

Hatfield Lions Club Announces Scholarship winner The Hatfield Lions Club is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Richardson is the winner of their Gantz-Hays Scholarship for 2018. Richardson is the daughter of Jeffery and Trina Richardson of Wickes and a 2018 graduate of Cossatot River High School.

Richardson was chosen from among 21 other candidates who submitted applications. She was chosen to receive the Gantz-Hays scholarship based on her GPA, community service and financial need and high school achieve-

ments. She will receive $500 for the fall semester and another $500 for the spring semester.

Richardson plans to attend UA Cossatot this fall and pursue a degree in Radiology.

POLK COUNTY FARM FAMILY OF THE YEAR

Farm Bureau of Arkansas named Matthew and Jessica Debnar of Mena the Polk County Farm Family of the Year during the 71st annual Arkansas Farm Family of the Year Program.

The Debnars have four children, John -26, Jennifer – 25, Amber – 20 and Peyton – 18.

Today, the Debnar Farm consists of three farms, The JC Farm, which Jessica purchased before she married Matthew. After they got married the Debnars bought the Faith Farm, which sets across the road from their church. Recently, they purchased the Funny Farm. Matthew said they plan to covert one of the older chicken houses on that property into a hay barn. The Debnar’s raise cattle and broilers on their three farms north of Mena.

The Debnars have five poultry houses and raise a total of 150,000 birds per growing cycle. The Debnars have a contract with Tyson Foods. He said the chicken house on the JC Farm has been retrofitted and they are renovating the four houses on the Faith Farm.

he Debnars also have 9 registered Braunvieh female cows and one registered Brauvnieh bull.

They also have 17 unregistered Braunvieh or Braford cows and one unregistered Braunvieh bull.

Matthew explained the cattle are marketed through CattleRange.com and word of mouth.

Matthew also reported they are making some improvements to their pastures by utilizing a rotational grazing program. He stated they are in the process of laying a waterline for the watering system. Matthew said this would allow them to better manage their land and grass.

The Debnars work with the Polk County Conservation District to increase the nutritional value of their hay. Matthew also acquired his private applicator pesticide license so he can spray their ďŹ elds to help control weeds and other pests that could potentially damage their ďŹ elds.

Jessica said she grew up on a farm. Her parents had bottle calves, cows and chicken houses. Jessica said she always wanted to be at home with her children. She said having a chicken farm allowed her to stay at home and still earn an income.

Jessica said Amber was 3 and Peyton was 4-months old when they signed the papers on the original farm. She said she literally did the dishes, changed diapers, read stories, while learning to be a electrician, a plumber and a maintenance person.

John Debnar is married to Brittany and they live in Anderson, Missouri. They have three children and he works for Peterbuilt.

Jennifer Roberts lives in Cherry Hill with her three children and works for Tyson.

Amber Debnar lives in Mena and works at the Mena Center for Women’s Health.

And, Peyton Debnar graduated in May.

15 June 13, 2018 Matthew is a member of the Polk County Cattleman’s Association and the Braunvieh Association of America. He teaches Adult Sunday School class at the Cherry Hill Baptist Church. He has also completed three semesters of Seminary Classes through Ouachita Technical Training Institute. Matt is also a certified Disaster Relief Volunteer through the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.

Jessica serves as the secretary for the Cherry Hill Baptist Church and she teaches the High School Sunday school class. Jessica has completed six semesters of Seminary classes through the Ouachita Technical Training Institute and is a certified Disaster Relief Volunteer through the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.

A set of judges visited the Debnar farm and Arkansas Farm Bureau will announce the eight district winners on June 20th. The Debnars are in the Western District.
