DAR Speaker Shines Light on MENA Salvation Army The February 20, program of the James K. Polk Chapter NSDAR was about "The Art Of Giving." The presentation was by the Mena Salvation Army Family Store Manager, Nancy Lewis. The Family Store is an off-shoot of the original Salvation Army founded by Methodist Minister William Booth and his wife Catherine in 1865 in London, England. Under the Booths' leadership, the Army grew to a worldwide organization known for its integrity, generosity, and effectiveness in meeting the needs of the people who so desperately need help - in time the motto became, "We go to the worst." When you donate goods or money, shop at the store, or when you drop a few coins or bills in the Kettle at Christmas, you're part of that mission that they started. The Mena Family Store is based on the original mission and vision: "Our Message is Based on the Bible; Our Ministry is Motivated by the Love of God; Our Mission is to Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to Meet Human Needs in His Name." The Mena Family Store is entirely self-sufficient, meaning the sale of donated

goods along with monetary gifts, including the annual Kettle Campaign (Bell Ringing), goes to pay all operating expenses including the salaries of two paid employees and funds all assistance. That assistance includes such things as lodging in the case of a burn out or natural disaster, food, gasoline for medical appointments, utility assistance once a year, and household items. Nancy Lewis retired to the Mena Area from Texas in 2016. Her last position in San Antonio was Program Manager for the largest military contract company located at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. She became the Store Manager of our local Salvation Army Family Store in June of 2018. She and her husband "Love Mena, and after only three and a half years, Mena has truly become our home. " The next meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution is Thursday, March 12, at 1:30 p.m. in the Polk County Library Community Room. Ladies interested in the DAR are invited to attend. - For membership information, contact Dotty Kinnun, Registrar(thekinnuns@gmail.com).

With spring just around the corner, it's important to remember that state and federal income tax forms are due soon. Both state and federal income tax forms must be Representative John Maddox postmarked no later than April 15, 2020, to avoid penalties and late fees. The legislature prioritized and passed several changes to its tax laws during the 92nd General Assembly, which means that your income tax rate may have changed from last year. The passage of ACT 182 during the 2019 legislative session, for example, reduces the top income tax rate in our state from 6.9% to 6.6%. The income tax rate will lower again in 2021 to 5.9%. This rate reduction took effect on January 1, 2020, for individuals and will be phased in for corporations by 2021. This is in addition to previous tax cuts passed in recent years impacting every income group. Because of these reduced tax rates, the Arkansas Department of Finance and

Polk County Pulse Administration announced to employers that the income tax withholding tables will change. As a result, you may see an increase in the amount of your paycheck starting this month. This increase will be offset in the future by lower tax refunds. As tax refunds issued now relate to tax year 2019 they are not affected by the withholding changes. The upcoming withholding changes will not impact annual refunds until calendar year 2021. Many Arkansans can utilize the IRS’s Free File program. This web-based program is a free federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for the approximately 70% of taxpayers who earn less than $60,000 in annual adjusted gross income. Eligible consumers can go to IRS.gov and choose from multiple private companies that will file federal returns at no charge. If you cannot afford to pay for tax preparation assistance, you may also be eligible to receive free help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Consumers can call (800) 829-1040 for information about VITA volunteer locations near them. Additionally, seniors can contact AARP at (888) 227-7669 to find the nearest TCE Tax-Aide site.

Reflections from History and Faith

history

Unity Among Diversity

By Jeff Olson The history of the church is indeed an amazing story, not only one of survival, success and failure but also one of its humanity and complexity. It is a paradox; a startling reality of how a diverse rabble of individuals coalesced into a unified people, an institution which by all practical reason and rationale should have perished many years ago. Instead, it is nearly two thousand years old and still a relevant force in the world today. It began with only a handful of dedicated followers of Jesus Christ; fishermen, farmers, tent makers, peasants, tax collectors, and others who differed not only in occupation but also in culture and religious beliefs to name but just a few. In future years, decades and centuries, the diversity and complexity within the church would continue to grow - but so would the unity. Why is that? How did this motley lot of folks survive throughout the many years of challenges, persecution, and countless efforts to eliminate them? What is it that has kept this institution not only alive but growing in many parts of the world? One could argue that it was principle, but many institutions of principle have come and gone over the years. One could also propose that it was purpose, virtue or lofty goals but none of these would be sufficient to explain why the church still exists and remains a viable force – at least to the degree it still is. So, what is the key to the church’s longevity and success? Perhaps it has something to do with relationships, love, and something or someone beyond ourselves. In John 10:30, Jesus said, “ I and my Father are one.” And, in His high priestly prayer in John 17, Jesus prayed in verse 11, “Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as we are.” In Galatians 3:28, Paul stated, ‘There is neither Jew or Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” In Ephesians 4:5-6, Paul tells us also, “There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” What does all this say to us about the survival of

the Church, her relationship to the Head of the Body of Christ, and among those other members of that Body? This relationship, as stated in Galatians, transcends culture, race, ethnicity, gender and all other human distinctions. While human distinctions in themselves can and do serve as necessary and positive elements to the functions and success of the church, the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12), we must be careful not to let them take on identities of their own in the forms of what today would be called multiculturalism or diversity. These nice-sounding innocuous terms can potentially become a mission or ideology in themselves and misdirect, circumvent or dilute the true identity and purpose of the church. Christ gave himself for us and the church (Ephesians 5:2,25), and it is His design and desire that the multiplicity of our backgrounds and the variety of our abilities, talents, gifts, creativity and experiences serve to edify the Body of Christ (Ephesians 4) in its purpose and mission. As Ephesians 4:11 reminds us, “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers,” And the list can go on even beyond these. Essentially then, our unity within the Body of Christ is contingent first and foremost on a personal oneness with Jesus Christ and not on all the similarities and differences we bring with us to the table and to the altar. In fact, we have nothing in ourselves to offer that make us worthy to receive the grace of God through Christ Jesus (Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:10). Philippians 2:2 tells us, “Fulfill ye my joy, that ye be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.” And in 1 Peter 3:8, “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous.” “...that they may be one even as we are” is Jesus' deepest prayer of desire for each of us. If we get that right with Him then we can get it right with one another, therefore making true unity in the Church a reality. Only in this way can the Church profess, portray, and share the same Jesus to a lost and dying world.

Lottery Announces Problem Gambling Awareness Month LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery (ASL) wants to spread the word that help is available around the clock to those who need it. “We are dedicating March to helping people ‘have the conversation’ about problem gambling,” said Bishop Woosley, ASL director. “Approximately 2 percent of U.S. adults are considered problem gamblers; yet for many, gambling remains a hidden addiction. “The mission of the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery is to provide proceeds for scholarships in a responsible way. We want people to remember that lottery should be considered entertainment and not a way to make money.” Last summer the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery received Responsible Gambling Certification from the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries and the National Council on Problem Gambling. The certification involves a multi-step verification program to ensure the lottery provides best practices in training for lottery employees and retailers and treatment options for players who may have a gambling problem. Problem Gambling Awareness Month is designed to help raise awareness of the prevention, treatment and recovery services available for those adversely affected by gambling. Woosley said problem gambling includes all gambling behavior that damages personal, family or vocational pursuits. In extreme cases, problem gambling can result in financial ruin, legal problems, loss of career and family or suicide. According to the National Council of Problem Gambling, most problem gamblers will answer yes to at least one of the AWARENESS CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

Enjoy the Spirit of the Leprechauns at March Cash Mob Submitted by Judy Thompson Judy Thompson, Downtown Business Liaison and Cash Mob Coordinator, grins and says that if you’re looking for the leprechaun’s pot of gold, you need to visit downtown Mena because the shops in downtown are truly a treasure. Thompson invites everyone to the monthly Downtown Cash Mob. The Cash Mob meets the second Saturday of each month. The March Mob is being hosted by American Artisans at 10:00 AM, March 14. Cash Mobs continue to be popular throughout the country and are an entertaining way to encourage shoppers into businesses where they not only normally shop but also to stores that they are not familiar with. The monthly Mobs provide an opportunity to shop at various businesses and promote the Buy Local effort of Mena

Downtown Partners. Through Downtown Partners’ member businesses, door prizes and special incentives are given to Mob’sters. In addition to the door prizes, the host provides complimentary refreshments. After fun ways to get to know each other, the name of the shop to be mobbed is drawn. The Mob’sters then converge as a group on the shop. Rules to participate are very simple… 1) Commit to spend at least $20 at each Cash Mob and 2) Have fun. It is not necessary to be pre-registered as a Mob member. Just show up and sign in at the door. Everyone is invited. Help the local economy and indulge in that all-American pastime of….shopping! Be a part of the treasure that is downtown Mena and join the Mob at American Artisans on March 14.
