UA - Rich Mountain Graduation Ceremony

College Tuition Now More Affordable at UA

(MENA) The University of Arkansas - Rich Mountain has been building anticipation of the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville’s Chancellor Dr. Joe Steinmetz’s commencement address and it did not disappoint, announcing to the Rich Mountain Class of 2019, that the University of Arkansas has a new scholarship program that reduces tuition rates for students who graduate with associate’s degrees from any of the two- year colleges in the University of Arkansas System and then transfer to the Fayetteville campus. This unprecedented move will enable any student who earns an associate’s degree at a UA System community college to transfer to the University of Arkansas to work toward a bachelor’s degree, while continuing to pay the same basic credit hour tuition they paid at their two-year institution. “For many students, particularly ones starting out at two-year institutions, financial need is one of the bigger obstacles to attaining a bachelor’s degree,” Steinmetz said. “It is our responsibility as the state’s flagship and land-grant university to reduce obstacles Arkansans face to earning a degree and improving the pathways to get there.” The unprecedented move, called the Arkansas Transfer Achievement Scholarship, will now allow associate degree graduates from the local two-year community college, now aligned with the Uni-

versity of Arkansas System, to transfer to the hill and continue to pay the same tuition rates as Rich Mountain. U of A Rich Mountain Chancellor Dr. Phillip Wilson said he felt incredibly privileged to not only have Chancellor Steinmetz as the commencement speaker but to have him personally deliver this generous announcement on the local campus, “This scholarship demonstrates the University of Arkansas’ commitment to providing additional opportunity for our graduates at Rich Mountain and all of the UA System’s two-year colleges,” said U of A Rich Mountain Chancellor Phillip Wilson. “It’s an opportunity that has the potential to transform the lives of countless families in our state.” To be eligible to receive an Arkansas Transfer Achievement Scholarship, a graduate of one of these schools must: * Be an Arkansas resident * Earn an associate’s degree in December 2018 or after * Have a cumulative 2.0 grade point average •

Meet all other U of A admission criteria and program requir ments

• Enroll in an on-campus undergradu ate degree program, full or part-time

(MENA) The second ever graduating class of the University of Arkansas – Rich Mountain, walked across the stage in front of the Maddox Building on Thursday, May 9th with Dr. Krystal Thrailkill, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs reading each name from the list of thirty varying degrees or certificates that were handed out. Dr. Joe Steinmetz, Chancellor of the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville was the guest commencement speaker for the event. Steinmetz based his theme on “Now What?” to the approximately 385 graduating students. Steinmetz challenged the graduates on what would they do now with their life, the path that it took to get to this point in life. The chancellor added that time can slip away if they are not careful and that the students have a valuable opportunity to take advantage of. Steinmetz added that by continuing their education, going into the military or directly into the workforce are some of the choices that they have for that next step in life. The University of Arkansas System President, Dr. Donald Bobbitt also attended the commencement exercises Steinmetz offered suggestions as to what students should strive for. Encouraging graduates not to be afraid to step out of

their comfort zones. Look for new and challenging doors and to do something more rewarding and satisfying in their career. Success and satisfaction was another area of suggestion to the crowd in attendance. Steinmetz shared that being good at what you are doing, making a difference and about keeping the passion. Being a lifelong learner, doesn’t always mean you know it all. Life gets boring if you stop learning and encouraged the graduates to want to learn more. Steinmetz stressed to never do anything alone. He emphasized to thank others and to endure support and to give a hand along the way to others.

Holly Harshman Third Graders Present Their Wax Museum Biography Projects This past Thursday, May 9th, Holly Harshman third graders completed their first-ever biography projects. As preparation for next year, all third graders choose individuals to research, prepare a written paper followed by a visual presentation open to parents and grandparents. The assignment took one week as students diligently researched their chosen individuals while at school through the use of the internet. Biographies represented various individuals from famous baseball Hall of Famers such as Lou Gehrig, to astronaut Sally Ride or closer to home heroes like Ranger boat founder and Arkansas Hall of Fame member Forrest Lee Wood. All work was the product of the students. This research culminated in a written page to be graded on content, accuracy, spelling, and grammer. With the weight of a grade lifted, the students then prepared to wow their peers and parents with a visual presentation. Students, also as a solo effort, outfitted a presentation board with facts and pictures concerning their individuals. They donned outfits and make up to dress in character. While parents paraded around a sea of third grade projects, each student portrayed

Reflections From Faith and History National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day by Jeff Olson May is a month full of special times such as proms, high school and college graduations, the beginning of vacation season, and the Memorial Day observance. However, May is also the month in which a perhaps lesser-known day is set aside for a very special observance and one which I believe is every bit as important as Memorial Day: National Peace Officers' Memorial Day. On October 1, 1962 President John Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726, a joint resolution of the 87th Congress, designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. The resolution reads in-part: "...Whereas these officers have safeguarded the lives and property of their fellow Americans: and Whereas by the enforcement of our laws, these same officers have given our country internal freedom from fear of the violence and civil disorder that is presently affecting other nations: Whereas these men and women by their patriotic service and their dedicated efforts have earned the gratitude of the republic: Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, that the President is authorized and requested to issue proclamations designating May 15 of each year as Peace

Officers Memorial Day in honor of the Federal, State, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty." This law was amended by Congress as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-322, a joint resolution of the 103rd Congress, which directs that the flag of the United States on all Government buildings be displayed at halfstaff each year on May 15. On this day, may we pay tribute to all fallen officers and honor those who are still laying their lives on the line daily for the cause of law, order and justice, without which society would decay into chaos and ultimately into anarchy and tyranny. On this occasion, and when any opportunity presents itself, be sure to extend a heart-felt "thank you" to one (or more) of our law enforcement officers. Lest we forget, the strongest bastion of America's freedom is rooted in the strength and bonds of families and other institutions within the civil/social order of local communities. The protection and preservation of these depend upon the men and women who serve you and me proudly each and every day, in and out of uniform faithfully, diligently and courageously.

Mannon Presents “Benedict Arnold, Hero and Traitor”

(MENA) The James K. Polk Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution had a guest speaker for its April meeting, with Joe Mannon, Mannon is a wonderful storyteller and kept everyone on the edge of their seat. Everyone knows that Benedict Arnold was a traitor, but little is known about why such a trusted general in George Washington's Army could turn traitor. As Bannon told the story of Arnold’s injury while leading the Battle of Saratoga where he was a hero, and then Arnold's disappointments later that lead to his decision to turn traitor in America's war for independence from Great Britain, everyone became so caught up in Bannon’s story that an hour passed without notice. Now living in Mena, Mannon grew up in Mansfield, Arkansas, and earned his degree in history from the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, and later gaining his Master Degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Bannon taught high school history, was a high school principal, and assistant superintendent in two different school districts. All together, Bannon spent over 30 years in public education. And for the past twenty-plus years, he has been a Sunday School Teacher, for an adult Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church in Mena The next meeting of the DAR will be held on May 16 at 5:00 p.m. in the Lime Tree Restaurant. The program is being presented by the OLT / Ouachita Little Theatre, The topic for the presentation will be "History of the Ouachita Little Theater." For information about membership in the James K. Polk Chapter of DAR, for ladies

Minimum Age to Smoke to Take Effect in Sept. (LITTLE ROCK) A new law gradually raises Arkansas' minimum smoking age from 18 to 21 by 2021. The first change hits smokers Sept. 1. The law bans all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from those under 21 years old. It exempts members of the military and also doesn't apply to smokers who turn 19 years old before 2020, which is how the state will phase in the new requirement. The same law also increases some cigarette taxes and dedicates an existing tax on medical marijuana to pay for a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation at UAMS.

CATIO Cat Structure Needed For Shelter (MENA) The Humane Society of the Ouachita’s is looking for a few good carpenters for a much needed project. The CATIO brand products are wonderful and we would love one for our Cat Habitats, so our cats could enjoy a little of the outdoors! But the brands are also expensive. So, the no – kill animal shelter staff is wonder-

ing if any of you Skilled Builders out there would bless the Humane Society of the Ouachita's cats with your extra time and energy to build a catio-style outdoor play habitat. Or if you know of someone who you think would be interested in helping in this way, please let us know on who they would be.

According to staff members, there are a lot of websites which provide plans and building ideas for “Do It Yourself” catio structures.

Please email Tina at tinasball@aol. com for more details like size of structure needed!

ENEMIES OF THE CROSS

“For many walk, of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ” (Philippians 3:18). The birth of Jesus, the sinless life, the resurrection and all of the miracles and wonderful teachings mean absolutely nothing if the cross is left out of our faith, our teaching, and preaching. Jesus was born of the virgin, He did live a sinless life, He was buried, He was resurrected by the power of God, He did ascent to be in Heaven where He “ever lives to make intercession for us.” None of this has meaning if the cross upon which He died is left out. It was upon the cross that Jesus took the judgment of God upon sin and sinners. The blood that was shed there, despised as it is by many, was the exact price of human sin. We do not, cannot, understand it but we must not deny it. It is a “God thing.”

Many literally hat the cross. Why? Because the cross reminds us that sin is a reality and that all of us are in fact sinners (until our new birth, then we become saints) in need of a Savior. We humans think that we can fix anything that is broken, not immediately perhaps, but eventually. But there is one thing that we will never fix because we cannot fix it. The sin nature is all-too real. Evidence is all around us at all times. Laws are necessary, and, to a certain extent, through the threat of punishment, can control some kinds of behavior for a certain period of time. But, eventually, law or no law, the sin nature surfaces and someone is murdered, a woman is raped, a bomb explodes and hundreds of people are maimed and killed… Literally dozens of wars are being waged even now around our world.

The problem is the same for all of these things. We were created by God for God, and simply cannot be what we were intended to be without Him. Years ago our own country began to turn away from Him. There will be a price to pay, a very high price, and no one will like it. But as the Word of God says “the wage of sin is death.” Ignore it! Despise it! Burn the Bible! Truth is truth is truth, and denying it will not change a thing. We can turn our backs on rattlesnakes and pretend that they re not there, but their existence does not depend upon our approval, neither does the Word of God. It is Truth and its Truths will become more and more apparent as the years fly by. The only solution to the human problem was found, and is still found, on a hill outside of Jerusalem about 2000 years ago when the best man who ever lived was nailed to a cruel Roman cross, and died there. How could that death affect me almost 2000 years after the fact? God did something there that only God could do! He put the awful price of human sin upon the only One Who could bear it! And bear it He did! One of the most beautiful Christian songs ever written contains the words “Sin died, where the blood fell, I’m so glad that precious blood has covered me.”

Some ignorantly call Christianity a “bloody” religion. Truth: Only Jesus’ blood could atone for human sin, Religion in our attempt to reach God through what we can do; Christianity is God’s reaching out to us through what His Only Begotten Son did. Big difference. Everything begins and ends at the cross. Some of the old songs are still with us after many, many years because of the Truth they contain. Such as this one: “On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame. And I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain. So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down. I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it some day for a crown. Truth is Truth, and Truth endures no matter how it is treated. If you have never done it, meet the Lord Christ at the foot of the cross and invite Him into your life to be your Lord and Savior. If you ask and if you mean it He will come in. You will be blessed! And forgiven. Eternity in Heaven or Hell; the cross is the difference. MESSAGE PROVIDED AND PAID FOR BY GENE STACKS

Historical Interactive Website of Arkansas Graves Created (LITTLE ROCK) History buffs can now easily take a tour of the tombstones of Arkansas' top leaders. After a year-long trip around the state to track down governors' graves, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program compiled all of the locations and pictures of the sites on a new interactive website, in which visitors can also read more about the state, territorial and acting governors, some of whom are buried outside of Arkansas. The historian, who went on the scavenger hunt so you don't have to, found many of the markers were sinking into the ground, deteriorating or even damaged. The Department of Arkansas Heritage and the Clinton School also worked on the project after the leaders of both institutions noticed the need for this during their own visits to governors' graves.

They hope the local communities will also band together to add historical markers to the sites. The interactive website is locate at www. arkansaspreservation.com/Programs/ Cemetery/graves-of-arkansas-governors

County Soccer Teams Make Nice State Tourney Runs The Mena Bearcats soccer team advanced all the way to the semifinals of the Class 4A State Soccer Tournament over the weekend in Batesville. Meanwhile, the Cossatot River High School Eagles and Lady Eagles competed well in the Class 2A State Soccer Tournament in Mountain Home. The Bearcats advanced to the final four with a thrilling 2-1 win over Hamburg in the first round on Thursday. Then the Bearcats slipped past Dardanelle by an identical 2-1 score in Friday’s quarterfinals in Batesville. The Mena season came to an end on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to Valley View in the semis. The Bearcats finish with a record of 11 wins, six losses, and a tie on the year. Coach Greg Tibbitt will see his leading scorer, senior co-captain Cristian Lua graduate. Lua enjoyed a great senior campaign from his Striker position. The Bearcats will return sophomore goaltender Gaven Hooper next season. Senior

Dennis Juni and junior Andrew Graves also saw playing time at goaltender. Congratulations to Coach Tibbitt and the Bearcats for finishing in the top four in the Class 4A State Tournament! The Cossatot River Eagles won their opening round matchup in the Class 2A State Boys Soccer Tournament at Mountain Home with a 4-3 victory over Episco-

pal of Little Rock on Thursday. The Eagles were shut out by Green Forest 7-0 in Friday’s quarterfinals. Coach Reggie Fryar’s club finished with a 7-8 record for the year. Leading scorers for Cossatot River’s boys on the season were sophomore Daniel Alacron and junior Manuel Esquivel-Amador. Sophomore Eduardo Maya had a nice season as goaltender.

The Lady Eagles lost a heart-breaking 4-3 decision to Lisa Academy of Little Rock in Thursday’s opening round. Coach Reggie Fryar’s Lady Eagles finish the year with a 6-5 record. Leading scorer and senior co-captain Ashlen Gonzalez will graduate. Junior goaltender Yazmin Medina will return next season to lead the Lady Eagles.

Lady Razorbacks Softball Team in NCAA Tournament (FAYETTEVILLE) When the bracket for the NCAA Tournament's Norman (Okla.) Regional was announced Sunday night, the University of Arkansas softball players cheered as they watched on the scoreboard video screen at Bogle Park. The cheer wasn't because the Razorbacks saw their name. It was because they knew Arkansas wasn't going to play at Oklahoma. The Razorbacks let out a bigger cheer when it was announced they will play Tulsa in the Stillwater (Okla.) Regional at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Cowgirl Stadium. The Arkansas-Tulsa game will be lived-streamed on ESPN3.

The

18th Annual

Oklahoma -- the No. 1 overall seed with a 49-2 record -- has eliminated Arkansas seven of the eight times the Razorbacks have played in the NCAA Tournament, including last season when the Sooners won 7-2 and 9-0 in the Norman Super Regional. After Arkansas (38-18) plays Tulsa (3518) in Thursday's regional opener, Oklaho-

ma State (39-14) will play BYU (29-24). Tulsa, which won 2-1 at Arkansas on March 13, is the only team in the regional the Razorbacks have played this season. The Razorbacks are making their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance -- a first in the program's 23-year history.

HHetown Home Loans, ORSD Students Take 5 Trips in 5 Weeks Made Here... (ACORN) Five field trips in five weeks? You bet! Ouachita River School District students have been busy learning about the outdoors in both the after school program and during science lab classes. To extend learning experiences, students in grades K-3 at Acorn Elementary and 4-6 at Oden Elementary took trips to Dardanelle State Park travelling on a Little Rock Tours Charter Bus. On April 30, Kindergarten students learned about bird adaptations and birds that migrate using Dardanelle Lake as a stop-over habitat. They saw pelicans and sea gulls, as well as a great blue heron on the lake after learning about a special bird, owls, and creating a model of the owls. They also learned about mammals in the park when they played a games called “Squirrels Gone Nuts” and “Oh, Deer!” First grade students travelled on April 23 to learn about Birding Basics, Bird Beaks, and to create an Insect Orchestra. These young scientists explored how and why insects make different sounds. Eagles reside year-round at Dardanelle

State Park. On April 16 second graders used measurement tools to compare themselves to eagles. They also learned about riparian zone characteristics and birds living on the lake. Letterboxing is an introductory lesson teaching skills used for geocaching. Third graders on April 9 learned how to use compasses to discover a “cache,” and how to identify food webs in the park. They also learned about bird calls and characteristics of various birds. Grades 4-6 from Oden Elementary completed a scavenger hunt along the banks of Dardanelle Lake. It included seed pods, reptiles, trees, water features, and more. This group of young scientists got into the lake to collect macro-invertebrates from the water to determine water quality. All the students enjoyed the large aquariums, bee hive, and hands-on exhibits in the visitor center, along with picnic lunches and a great playground. Funding for the charter buses was provided by grants from the Arkansas Humanities Council written by science lab teacher Kathy Rusert in cooperation with classroom teachers.

When the Mena High School 40-Year Club was organized in 1956, its primary purpose was to plan gatherings for those who graduated from Mena High School more 40 years prior. Since then, 40-year Club reunions have been held in Mena every two years. Two new classes are welcomed to the club each year. Attendance continues to grow with more than 300 attending the last reunion in 2017. The events planned are informal and focus on reminiscing and renewing friendships. After many successful gatherings, the Board of Directors established a scholarship fund to assist MHS graduates who planned to attend college. In 1982, the first Scholarship Committee was formed. Members were Ellleta Flick, Pauline Morrow, Dick Barham, Dick Carver and Lee McMillan. Omar Washburn and Louise Waters soon joined the group. Louise soon became chairman and served in that capacity for many years. The Scholarship Fund grew with contributions from MHS graduates. In 2005, the Scholarship Committee established two endowments at Rich Mountain Communi-
