Polk County Jail Gets Much Needed Rehab

(MENA) Polk County Sheriff Scott Sawyer is a thankful man. Why you ask? Well, this is because he has accomplished some goals and promises that he is keeping when he was first elected Sheriff. Sawyer was facing the fact that the state would possibly shutdown the Polk County Jail. Instead, Sawyer put together a plan that would eliminate three cells, going from 27 to 24 jail cells for prisoners and gain some needed space for his overworked staff to take care of much needed operational duties. In the end, Sawyer was able to construct a new kitchen preparation area, an outdoor recreational area and an expanded booking or processing center. The kitchen prep area, recreation area and new cell doors were some areas that were of high concern to the state, to stay in compliance. The dispatch center was also improved as well. The Sheriff’s office handles the incoming of calls from not only the county residents, but also handles dispatching calls for the City of Mena Police Department. Sawyer is not finished yet with the jail. Within the next 18 to 20 months, construction is expected to begin on another section being added to the facility. That addition, expected to cost nearly $1 million dollars, will add another potential 32 prisoners to the complex, that will bring the total number of prisoners that can be housed to 56. Sawyer credits the insights and direction that Polk County Judge Brandon Ellison has provided with the work that has been completed and with the future expansion plann ed. According to Sawyer, “Polk County is very fortunate to have someone like Judge Ellison looking after their money”. Sawyer said that “even I don’t like to pay more taxes, but, Judge Ellison has made sure that the money was in place before starting this project” and that no additional burdens are put upon the taxpayers of Polk County. Approximately $400,000 was spent on the renovations and improvements that will be wrapped up this week. Attempts of tax increases placed on the ballot in recent years were soundly defeated, in the hopes of building a new jail that would have put the jail under state compliance. The county had been in the crosshairs of the state for a number of years. When construction gets underway for the new addition along the 500 block of Hickory Street, the expansion will give deputies the ability of controlling and segregating the population better. Two – 16 prisoner cell pods, with a workstation situated between the two pods, will give a better handle of situations if they arise. (Continued on Page 5)

Mayor Proclaims May As Mental Health Month

(MENA) Mena Mayor Seth Smith recently signed a proclamation declaring May as Mental Health Month in the City of Mena. Mayor Smith was supported by Mena Regional Health System representatives from Senior Behavioral Health and Cedar Haven. Smith encouraged citizens, government agencies, public & private institutions, and businesses & schools in Mena to recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health. Arkansas Farm Bureau Taps Wallace, Magdefrau for PR Roles (LITTLE ROCK) Arkansas Farm Bureau has promoted Ashley Wallace to the role of social media specialist and hired Matthew Magdefrau as visual production specialist. Wallace previously served as graphic design specialist in the Production Hub at Arkansas Farm Bureau, providing creative design and graphics for the company, and assisting with print production projects. Prior to joining Arkansas Farm Bureau, she spent seven years at the Arkansas Press Association, the state's newspaper trade association, ﬁrst as graphic designer and later as director of creative services. Wallace earned a degree in graphic design from UCA in 2011 and has completed advanced training at the Institute of Newspaper Technology. In her new role, she will oversee all of Arkansas Farm Bureau’s social media channels and continue to provide graphic design support for digital and print media. Shop and Have Fun with the Cash Mob as the ‘Merry Month of May’ is Celebrated Submitted by Judy Thompson The ‘merry’ month of May ofﬁcially celebrates Spring in full swing. As those attending the Cash Mob always want to have fun, they take advantage of any reason to celebrate. The Mercantile is hosting the group on Saturday, May 11, 10 AM, in the Classroom in the back of the shop. Those attending will have a chance to enjoy refreshments, door prizes, games and other fun prior to the name of the shop to be ‘mobbed’ being drawn. The Cash Mob is a project of the Mena Downtown Partners to promote its ongoing Buy Local campaign and provide an opportunity for fun and socializing. A Cash Mob is a community effort that joins people together to support local businesses. In this effort, the Cash Mob converges on a participating downtown shop that is a member of the Downtown Partners. Cash Mobs bring an immediate economic impact to a locally-owned business with long-term positive results. The Mob meets the second Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM at a predetermined place for morning refreshments. All

participating MDP retailers who have not yet been selected on this round will have their business names placed in a container. One of the Mob’sters will draw the name and then the Mob will proceed to the selected business for a fun shopping experience. Cash Mobs continue to be more popular throughout the country and are an entertaining way to encourage shoppers into businesses where they not only normally shop but also to stores that they are not familiar with. The monthly Mobs provide an opportunity to shop at various businesses. Through the MDP member businesses, door prizes and special incentives are given to Mob’sters. Rules are simple 1) Commit to spend at least $20 at each Cash Mob and 2) Have fun. You do not have to be pre-registered as a Mob member. Just show up and sign in at the door. Reflections From Faith and History The Hand that Rocks the Cradle -by Jeff Olson This coming Sunday we have an opportunity to honor a person who gave each of us the greatest gift of all - life. Mother’s Day has a long history in America, going all the way back to 1872 when Julia Ward Howe made the first known suggestion for a ‘Mother’s Day for Peace.’ She recommended that people observe a Mother’s Day on June 2 and for several years she led an annual Mother’s Day meeting in Boston. In 1887 a Kentucky schoolteacher, Mary Towles Sasseen, started conducting Mother’s Day celebrations. In 1904 Frank Herring of South Bend, IN started a campaign for the observance of Mother’s Day. In 1907, Anna Jarvis (18641948) of Grafton, WV began a campaign for a nationwide observance of Mother’s Day, inspired by her own mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis (1832-1905). Ann Jarvis dedicated much of her life in God’s service and founded Mother’s Day Work Clubs in five cities to improve sanitary and health conditions. She also fed and clothed and treated wounds of Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers. Anna selected the 2nd Sunday in May (beginning in 1908) and introduced the custom of wearing a carnation, her mother’s favorite flower. Anna Jarvis devoted herself full time to the creation of a national Mother’s Day, endlessly petitioning state governments, business leaders, women’s groups, churches and other institutions and organizations. Eventually, her progress towards this goal accelerated as many states would soon institute Mother’s Day observances. In 1912, West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mother’s Day.

One hundred five years ago this week, May 8, 1914, Congress passed a joint resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Upon his signature, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first Mother’s Day presidential proclamation, calling for “a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” In 1972, the International Mother’s Day

As important as is the history and national observance of Mother’s Day, even more important is what this should mean to each of us on a personal level - not only on this day but every day of every year. The Holy Scriptures command and admonish us to honor our father and mother (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:2). I am eternally grateful to my mother Rubie Lea Franks Olson, my

mother-in-law Frances Mae Fritz Gauthier, and to my wife Denise. To this day, their lives testify that a mother’s love is second only to God’s in its depth, breadth, truth, selflessness and consequence. I will close with a stanza from a wellknown poem by William Ross Wallace (1819-1881). “Woman, how divine your mission, Here upon our natal sod; Keep— oh, keep the young heart open always to the breath of God! All true trophies of the ages Are from mother-love impearled, For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world.”

Polk County Library Opens Genealogy Room with Help from Genealogical Society (MENA) The Polk County Genealogical Society has teamed up with the Polk County Library to provide a wonderful place to research your family history, the history of Polk County as well as other Arkansas counties. The Library has provided a “Genealogy Room.” The Genealogy Room has two computers with internet access as well as Ancestry.com at no cost. A printer/copier/scanner is available. The room is filled with family histories and many many Polk County records. One whole wall is dedicated to Polk County. Other areas include records for adjoining counties in Oklahoma as well as Native American research. We have records for Arkansas Counties, the Civil War, Veterans, as well as other states. The Society has microfilm of the Mena Star beginning in 1898 through 2016. There is no charge to the public to look at all the Polk County History on these reels. The Society also has microfilm of Census and other subjects including some court records.

The Society was established in 1986 to promote family genealogy and Polk County history. The Genealogy Room in the Polk County Library is loaded with information and history, just waiting for people to stop by and see. The Polk County Genealogical Society is having a huge fund raiser to purchase a new microfilm reader, computer, screen and printer for the Genealogy Room locat-

ed in the Polk County Library. The Society is selling a 10 pound box of Tyson uncooked breaded chicken tenders for $10 per box. This is a $30 to $40 value. Some tickets are available at the library. Contact 479-234-1967 for orders and information. The chicken can be picked up May 17th from 2 to 6 P.M. in the Northside Shopping Center Parking Lot. Mena Police Department Report April 28, 2019 Two Mena youths, ages 13 and 15, were charged with theft of property (shoplifting) and criminal mischief after officers responded to a call at a local retail store. A third boy, age 15, was later issued a citation stemming from the incident. Case has been referred to juvenile authorities. Officers answered a call concerning a stolen lawn mower from the yard of a house in Mena. No suspects at this time. A 14-year-old Mena girl was cited for curfew violation and disorderly conduct after officers were called to a residence in Mena. Case has been referred to juvenile authorities. April 29, 2019 Thomas Wayne Goger, 31. Of Mena was charged with third degree battery. The arrest followed a call to a local residence. Amanda Walters, 30, of Mena was served an outstanding warrant from the Mena Police Department. A 15-year-old Mena girl was charged with disorderly conduct. Juvenile authorities were notified. Ashton Eldridge, 22 was arrested on an

outstanding warrant from the Polk County Sheriff’s office. Sarah Mitchell, 25, of Mena was arrested on two outstanding warrants from the Polk County Sheriff’s office. April 30, 2019 A Mena woman reported that someone had broken into her vehicle at her residence and had stolen her purse. No suspects at this time. May 1, 2019 Kenneth Lee Clements, 55, of Mena was charged with public intoxication. The arrest followed a call to a local neighborhood. John Fagan, 51, of Mena was served a warrant for failure to pay child support. Robert Scott Williams, 31, of Mena was served an outstanding warrant for probation violation. May 2, 2019 Lonnie Gene Tyler, 50, of Mena was charged with third degree assault. The arrest followed a call regarding a fight at a local residence. Kevin Lee Fryar, 33, of Mena was arrested on an outstanding warrant. May 3, 2019 Leroy Crawford, 68, of Mena was charged with shoplifting after a call to a local retail store. Also charged in the incident with criminal trespass was Donna Price, 67, also of Mena. Lee Wisnoski,44, of Mena was served an outstanding warrant from the Polk County Sheriff’s office. He was also ticketed for having no vehicle license. Bradley Joe Moss, 43, of Mena was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and no liability insurance. He was additionally served an outstanding warrant for probation violation. Alan Bryan Cox, 47, of Cove was served an outstanding warrant from the Polk County Sheriff’s office. May 4, 2019 Timothy Wade Perales, 35, of Mena was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and driving on a suspended driver’s license. The arrest followed an investigation by local authorities. Matthew Alan Shelley, 20, of Mena was charged with DWI, second offense, possession of alcohol by a minor, possession of marijuana, and careless driving. The ar-

Farm Family of the Year Named (LITTLE ROCK) County farm families have been selected for the 72nd annual Arkansas Farm Family of the Year Program. The county winners will be visited by a set of judges to determine the eight district winners, who will be announced June 17. They will be visited again by a different set of judges in July to determine a state winner, who will be announced December 12th at the Farm Family of the Year luncheon in North Little Rock. The Polk County Farm of the Year winner is Dean and June Wiles, of Mena. The other county winners in the Western District, in which Polk County will be competing against were Bob and Denise McCord with Dixieland Farm, of Norman (Montgomery County). “The Arkansas Farm Family of the Year program recognizes great farmers and ranchers each year,” said Randy Veach, president, Arkansas Farm Bureau. “These families are involved in noble and important work to provide food, fiber and shelter to the world. Since 1947, the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year Program has served as a vehicle to recognized outstanding farm families throughout the state. The objectives of the Farm Family of the Year program is to give recognition and encouragement to farm families who are doing an outstanding job on their farm and in their community;to gain recognition of the importance of agriculture in the community and state; to disseminate information on improved farm practices and management. The Farm Family of the Year program begins each year with the selection of top farm families in each county and culminates in December with the selection of the state Farm Family of the Year who will then go on to represent Arkansas at the Swisher Sweets/ Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year. BARBARA EMERY Barbara Emery, age 91, of Mena, Arkansas, died, Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at the Mena Regional Health System. She was born on Tuesday, September 27, 1927 to Merritt Franklin and Myrtle Gadd Harrison in San Antonio, Texas. Barbara was a devoted member of the Northside Church of Christ, and was always guided by her faith. She was a Pastor’s wife for 66 years, and her relationship with Christ was of utmost importance to her. Barbara was an elementary school teacher and later went on to teach special education. Her greatest joy was teaching children and seeing them learn and grow. In her free time, she enjoyed the tranquility of gardening. Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend and will be missed by all who knew her. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Austin Emery; and one son, Mark Emery. Barbara is survived by her son and daughter in law, Timothy and Rita Emery of Fort Worth, Texas; one daughter, Robyn Emery of Iowa; five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. LADURL A. KNIGHT Ladurl A. Knight, age 91, passed away on April 30, 2019 at the National Park Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas with his daughters, grandchildren and extended family by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife Kay, son Fred, sister Sue, his brother Ed and his parents Lois and Annie Knight. He is survived by his sister Robbie Joiner and her husband Colon of Ocala, Florida. He is also survived by his daughter, Wendy Martin and her husband Bob of Mena, daughter Lea Ann Mayer and her husband J.R. of Hot Springs, daughter Tanya Tritt and husband Chris of Cabot, and daughter Kristi Knight of Little Rock. He is survived by his many beloved grandchildren: Nathan Wolfenbarger, Erick Martin, Ashley Vacca, Kyle Martin, Melea Crees, John Hamilton, Rae Ann Hamilton, Johnny Mayer, Kayla Hand, Christopher Lyda and Grace Tull. es and nephews whose lives were touched and greatly influenced by him. Ladurl proudly served his country in the Army branch of the military, was a long time employee at U.S. Electrical Motors and was employed by the Mena school district. He served as the Commander of the VFW for many years, was a member of the American Legion, called bingo forever, mowed for the American Legion (forever), raised money for the World War II monument; played taps at so many funerals, presented schools with the American flag, put flags on veterans’ graves no matter the weather… the list goes on and on… Ladurl, dad, papaw, pop was the guy you could depend on---always. He was never late and if he said he’d be there he was there. On April 30 he must have told his beloved wife, Kay, he was coming. He’ll surely miss all of his friends at the senior citizens center. He’ll miss calling bingo. He’ll surely miss his buddy L.J. Dugan and wife Caroline---our chosen family members---he’ll miss all of us, but not nearly as much as we’ll miss him. We know right now he’s patiently waiting for the rest of us-- to show us

the ropes and take us on new adventures and tell us all his stories…he’ll be excited to see us and explain in his own unique and honest way just what heaven’s all about, just as long as we don’t get too messy or move his things… and most of all we know we can count on him to be there…because you could always count on him… Funeral services were Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Bowser Family Funeral Home Chapel in Mena, with Brother Victor Rowell and Father Joseph Shantiraj officiating. Interment followed in the Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction of Bowser Family Funeral Home in Mena. Scholastic Honors Day recognizes Arkansas’ best and brightest students. Reflections of Mom. Her Love, Caring, and Cutting Switches She cooked. She cleaned. She gave birth to you. Those are just 3 things moms do and have done for us. They work tirelessly whether they are a stay at home mom, a blue-collar mom or a professional. Their job of raising us is difﬁcult and much of the time goes without thanks. Not that we as her children are completely unappreciative of what she does. That’s just life. We take things for granted then once a year we celebrate the things she has done. “Here mom. Here’s a card and dinner. Thank you for your mothering us. Now on to my problems that I need your help with.” We really do owe her more. When it comes to a list of things our mother’s have done for us the biggest is birth. Obviously if not for that we wouldn’t be here. If she hadn’t endured 9 months of lugging us around in her belly, dealing with sickness, sore feet and a myriad of other things that I, as a guy, don’t even want to know about, we would not be here to continue her pain as a constant pain in her side. She cleaned up after us. Both the diapers and other messes we made. She

stepped barefooted onto numerous Lego’s, spent thousands of dollars on clothes that had a lifespan of less than 6 months, and in the case of my mother, became an expert at driving a 1977 Ford LTD while flailing a hand at me in the back seat because I had done something worthy of immediate punishment. She did this with a Winston in her mouth that never lost an ash. A truly remarkable feat. As we got older we became more self-sufficient. Did this take some of the load off of her? No. We just developed new ways to make things more difficult for her. Particularly because now we had the ability to talk. This meant a steady stream of questions from our constantly moving lips and at times those lips had sass talk back from us that was met with a stern look and possibly being told to go cut a switch. As we entered our teens we added eye rolling into our repertoire as well as the occasional outburst and screams because we weren’t allowed to stay over at a friends house or given the money for the latest Huey Lewis and The News album. The horror!

Now, all the while she is raising us she is dealing with all of the unseen things that we hadn’t a care in the world about. Keeping us safe, working, raising us, paying bills, putting dinner on the table and trying to keep sane. Things that we had no concept of until we left our loving nests and walked in to the real world of life. Take a look at what your mother has done for you. The years of raising, educating and nurturing to make us who we are today. It is amazing what a mother does for her children. Take these things into account. Don’t just send mom a card this year. And don’t just take her to dinner. She deserves so much more. After the card and dinner sit down with her. Tell her how you feel and how appreciative you are for her love and everything she has done for you. Does she live out of town? Write her a letter. No, not an email! That’s impersonal. Get a pen and paper. Write an actual letter. Mail it. She will cherish that and it will mean the world to her. She’s a mother. Your mother. Tell her you love her. Do for her as she has for you. Take care of her as she gets older. Be her child. Be the

rock for her as she has been for you.

Mena Student Awarded Governor’s Award for Musical Excellence (MENA) Fisher Neufeld of Mena, is the 2019 recipient of the Governor's Award for Musical Excellence. Fisher is a third year choir student. He earned all region choir honors for two years and qualified to audition for all state choir both years. He has been in band for seven years. Fisher earned all region honors on trombone one year and all region jazz band honors on piano for 5 years. He has been an Arkansas All State Jazz Band member for the past 3 consecutive years. He

earned the first chair position on piano in the All State Jazz Band in 2019. Fisher studied piano privately for seven years with Warren David and Judy Kropp. Fisher is the son of Jeff and Jerusha Neufeld. The Governor's Award for Musical Excellence is presented to an outstanding high school senior in the spring semester of each school year. At the request of the Governor, the award medallion can be worn at the graduation ceremony. The award is given with

the goal of rewarding and recognizing high school seniors for their commitment to excellence in music, regardless of school size or location. Mena Regional Support Foundation Teddy Bear Clinic The Mena Regional Support Foundation recently hosted the Annual Teddy Bear Clinic at Mena Regional Health System. First grade students from Polk County attended the clinic. Each class received a teddy bear to take on the tour and back to their classroom. The students named their bear and created a scenario about the bear’s injury or illness. As the classes traveled through different departments within the facility, nurses, therapists and department directors

“treated” the teddy bears and discussed some of the things they might experience if they visited the hospital. The Emergency Department, Radiology, Rehab, and Labor and Delivery participated in the tour. The goal of the Teddy Bear Clinic is, not only to educate students about ways the hospital treats and cares for patients, but to also ease their fears in case they have to visit the facility in an emergent situation.

Acorn High Tracksters Get Runner Up Status in District Meet (MENA) Acorn Senior Boys Track Team were District Runnerups in the Class 2A District 7 meet held recently in Acorn. Freshman Justice Neufeld was the high point winner in the meet. Justice Neufeld had been the state leader all year long in the 3200 meter run, during the State Track Meet in England, AR, Neufeld put the field away in the last 600 meters for the victory. This performance will put Neufeld on the Arkansas All State Boys Track team. Neufeld will be competing in the Meet of Champions this Saturday, May 11th in Lake Hamilton.

Lady Eagles Finish 4th in Regional Tourney

(PARKERS CHAPEL) The Cossatot River Lady Eagles softball team finished fourth in the Class 2A South Regional Tournament over the weekend at Parker's Chapel High School. In Friday's semi-finals, Cossatot River dropped a 6-2 decision to Horatio. Marissa Hammer and Jayden Dering scored runs for the Lady Eagles. Kaylen McKee had a RBI double. Savannah White knocked in the other run. Rhyen Martin collected two singles. Shanna Johnson had a double, and Dering added a single. In Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consolation contest, Murfreesboro defeated Cossatot River 9-2. Savannah White scored both runs for the Lady Eagles. The Cossatot River softball team will advance to the Class 2A State Tournament this week in Mountain Home. The Lady Eagles, now 9-6 on the year, will compete in first round action on Thursday, May 9th at 3:00.

Former Arkansas Razorbacks on Road to NFL Stardom (FAYETTEVILLE) Four more Arkansas Razorback football players are headed to the NFL after signing as undrafted free agents. Ryan Pulley, Brian Wallace, Randy Ramsey, and Santos Ramirez will join the pool of Razorbacks taking their talents to the next level. The undrafted free agents join Hjalte Froholdt, Dre Greenlaw, and Armon Watts as the seven total Hogs headed to the NFL. Cornerback Ryan Pulley declared for the draft after his junior campaign for Arkansas and signed as a UDFA for the

Arizona Cardinals. During his final season with the Hogs, he tallied 37 tackles with 30 solo stops, 3.5 for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, three interceptions, and six pass breakups. He started for nine games and played in 11 in the 2018 season. Offensive tackle Brian Wallace started all 12 games in his senior year and will now be joining the Denver Broncos. Standing at 6’5″ and weighing in at 326 lbs, Wallace has the physical build to make it at the next level. Safety Santos Ramirez is joining the New York Jets after 34 starts for the Hogs. He finished his junior and senior years starting every game. In his time with the Hogs, he racked up 218 tackles, 2.5 for loss, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and three interceptions.

Harper added “Barnes would often record himself working out” trying to find out what he could do to improve his conditioning efforts.

Mena Bearcat Band Members Honored at Banquet (MENA) Mena High School Band honored its outstanding members and recognition of its Seniors, at their Awards Banquet held Saturday evening at First Baptist Church’s Fellowship Hall. Christopher Thompson and Fisher Neufeld won the Distinguished John Phillip Sousza Award, normally awarded to one outstanding student bandmember; but, it occasionally awards co-winners. Tilman Portwood won the Directors Award, Christopher Thompson also was selected Band King, while Emily Sorge was selected Band Queen. Fisher Neufeld was selected Outstand-

ing Jazz Musician, Daniel Green was named as the Outstanding Woodwind Musician, with Ayden Ludwig being selected as the Outstanding Brass Musician. Summer Loar was chosen as the Outstanding Percussion Musician. Teresa Cude was selected for Outstanding Leadership and Pete Floyd was a natural choice for Most Spirited. Colby Murphy was chosen as the band’s Outstanding Marcher. Faith Chaney was picked as Outstanding Guard Member. FFA Banquet (MENA) A mix of Agriculture and Education, mixed in with accomplishments acquired within the last year for many Mena High School FFA students, was the highlight at the annual Mena FFA Banquet held Monday night at the Ouachita Center of the University of Arkansas – Rich Mountain. Numerous awards and scholarships were given out as well to the very active chapter. Halie Standerfer presided over her ﬁnal meeting as President of her high school chapter. Highlights from activities done in the school year included the annual Farm Equipment Auction, the Washington D.C. Leadership Conference and the National Convention held in Indianapolis, IN. The Mena FFA also holds its workday auction where FFA members are auctioned to work for a day for area residents or businesses. The chapter gets the proceeds from this auction to help fund Summer trips and scholarships for FFA members. The three advisors for the local chapter were also recognized for everything that they have done for the students. Mike Collins, Bryan Maye and Justin Goodnight were very appreciative of their students. Awards given include:

Public Hearing May 9th (MENA) - The City of Mena has scheduled a public hearing to identify potential outdoor park and recreation needs and priorities. Following the identiﬁcation process, city ofﬁcials will select those priorities to be submitted to the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism for a Outdoor Recreation Matching Grant application. Master Gardeners Annual Plant Sale May 11th at the Fairgrounds (MENA) This weekend, Saturday May 11 from 8am until 3pm, the Annual Plant Sale, sponsored by the Polk County Master Gardeners, will be held at the Polk County Fairgrounds. An abundance of plants, many from our local gardens will be for sale. These have always been popular because local plants are already adapted to our local conditions. In addition, there will be special varieties purchased for resale, usually trees and shrubs, that have been requested from former events. There will be lots of succulents this year, and, pre-planted arrangements as well. Hanging

baskets and colorful container gardens make an especially nice gift for Mother’s Day—which just happens to be the day following the Sale. The plants will be displayed on tables labeled Annuals or Perennials, and sun- and shade-loving choices. Written information will be available on each table, and knowledgeable Master Gardeners will be on hand to talk with you about your new plants. The Annual Plant Sale raises funds which are funneled back into the community, primarily through donations to scholarships for Polk County students continuing beyond high

school, who plan to study some aspect of Horticulture or Agriculture. We could not possibly make this event take place without hours and hours of volunteer labor, and the generous support of our sponsors in the community. Master Gardeners exists as an organization with two basic goals, to educate the public about horticultural practices, and to serve the public by maintaining beautiﬁcation projects in Mena.

Democrat Announces Bid For Arkansas Senate Race

(FAYETTEVILLE) A Fayetteville Democrat who last year ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives launched another campaign Wednesday, this time for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Josh Mahony, who received 32.6 percent of the vote in his race against incumbent Republican Steve Womack in the state’s 3rd Congressional District in November, hopes to take on Republican U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton of Dardanelle in 2020. In a conference call Wednesday morning, Mahony portrayed Cotton as a politician who has lost touch with the state he represents. A native of El Dorado, Mahony fared better than any of Womack’s other general election foes, receiving 74,952 votes last year. The last Democrat to run for the seat, Fayetteville attorney David Whitaker in 2010, captured 56,542 votes -- 27.6% of the total. (Libertarian Steve Isaacson captured 63,715 votes -- 22.7% of the total -- in 2016.) Mahony is the first Democrat to announce his candidacy for the Senate seat. Last month, retired Gen. Wesley Clark said he won’t enter the race; Democratic Party of Arkansas Political Director John Whiteside had sought to persuade him to run. Cotton, who unseated incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor in 2014, starts his bid for a second six-year term with a substantial fundraising edge. His campaign committee had cash on hand of $2,831,908 as of March 31, plus outstanding debts and obligations of $113,890. Mahony said his previous work with his family’s natural resources company in south Arkansas “gives me great visibility into the energy industry.”

Gun Manufacturer Starting Operations In Arkansas

(LITTLE ROCK) The U.S. arm of a Czech Republic gun manufacturer has chosen Little Rock for its North American headquarters and its first U.S.-based production facility as part of a $90 million investment that is to employ nearly 600 people within six years. Preliminary work on CZ-USA's 265,000-square-foot facility already has begun on a 73-acre site off Zeuber and Fletcher roads east of Interstate 30 on land owned by the Port of Little Rock. The headquarters and factory will mean new jobs for assemblers, test firers, machine operators, packers and loaders, skilled laborers, warehouse workers, engineers and production supervisors who will be paid an average of $22 per hour, Gov. Asa Hutchinson said during the announcement Tuesday. Some hiring is expected to begin as soon as this fall with more hiring in the spring of 2020, according to a CZ-USA page on the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce's website. Landing the project is "the result of everything that we have to offer in Arkansas -- from a skilled workforce to a business-friendly environment to our central location to the beauty of our great state," Hutchinson said at the news conference in the governor's conference room of the state Capitol.

By: Sam Jordan, Editor (MENA) National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare field, and typically are on the frontlines when you go to the emergency room, doctors office or taking care of our military service members at home or abroad. Nurses range from C.N.A. (Certified Nurse Aides), L.P.N. (Licensed Practical Nurse) and R.N. (Registered Nurse). In recent years, they have developed a field of Nurse Practitioners, which has quickly become one of the nation’s most in-demand roles, which is no surprise considering its remarkable versatility. With five areas of concentrations that covers adult, geriatric, pediatric, family, and mental health care. These professionals are sometimes the quickest to be able to treat patients, in which doctors are not readily available. There has been a shortage of medical professionals for many years, but college campuses such as the University of Arkansas – Rich Mountain, has put a emphasis of training and educating students in the medical field of nursing. Mena Regional Health System will be celebrating National Nurse’s Week with a variety of activities to show appreciation to their nursing staff for their caring, compassionate, dedicated and professional service provided to patients throughout the year. Nurses’ Week t-shirts will be distributed to all nursing staff and snacks will be served. The staff will also enjoy birthday cake and a celebration in honor of Florence Nightingale. Mena Regional Health System currently employees 133 part-time and full-time nurses. The long-term nurses that have served at the facility for over 20 years include: Sara Hale, Director; Pam Posey, Director; Belva McDaniel, RN; Darlene Hesterlee, RN; Cynthia George, LPN; Vickie Huff, LPN; Becky Richardson, (PRN)LPN; Angela Cunningham, LPN; Roger Vandeest, RN; Debbie Nelson, Nurse Manager; and Kathy Hopper, RN. “ The exceptional nursing staff of Mena Regional Health System is one of the primary reasons that we can deliver high-quality, patient-centered care to the

citizens of Mena, Polk County and the surrounding areas. As for myself, I have a son that is undergoing training to become a nurse. He is doing this through the G. I. Bill, because of his military career that he has been involved with since 2007. His future wife has been a nurse for many years too. My daughter in law is a Visiting Nurse in Arizona. Another daughter in law is a Director of Nursing for a hospital in Northeast Pennsylvania, and has enjoyed the interaction with the many patients that have came through those emergency room doors.
