Lines of Perfumes : landscape configuration at Oitylo

This proposal is a landscape configuration at the rural scenery of Oitylo, which is a traditional village located at north of the municipality East Mani of Peloponnese. This landscape design consists of an underground building volume which is connected with a system of cultivations of aromatic and medicinal plants. The main use of the building focuses on the processing and transformation of the plants and at the same time is open to visitors and offers them the opportunity to understand the whole process. The main goal of this proposal is to strengthen the primary sector of economy using the ideal soil and climatic conditions of the area. Alternative forms of production are considered necessary for the development of economy, while at the same time provides protection and preserves the natural landscape and the unique cultural and architectural heritage.

the place

You cannot take one step in Mani without walking in the footsteps of history, a modern traveller once remarked. How can you not feel the beauty when you are strolling through the maze - like cobbled streets of the small villages.

In Peloponnese there is a specific region named Mani. This region is on the peninsula of Taygetos. The region of Mani includes provinces such as Gytheio and Oitylo in Lakonia. The region ends in Cape Tainaro which is known for its highest peak of Taygetus mountain. The municipality of Oitylo took its name from the ancient Oitylo. Since it was an area inhabited from the ancient Homeric era. It is located 7km from Areopolis, the capital of this municipality. When someone visits Oitylo first, he or she will see the castle of Kelefas which is located in the west entrance of Mani. As visitors go down the hill they find themselves in a magnificent landscape with a view of the sea, the traditional settlement and the towers.

The gradual removal of craftsmanship from rural economy, the extended automation, the accelaration of the concentration of the means of production, the abandonment of large crop fields, the monocultures, the savage depletion of natural resources and the turning of tourist development into a dystopian nightmare, have totally transformed and shrank the rural landscape. Nowadays, an increased interest in ecology and in the so called “green development “ infuses today institutional political discourse and a wide range of cognitive, scientific and interdisciplinary fields. It is time to look to the environment in a differnet way and remeber that, above all, it constitutes a relationship, fluid and confused but, at any rate, alive. To that point, crops of aromatic and medicinal plants have the possibility of functioning as a multiplier for the local economy and development. The local comunity can combine the cultivations with other initiatives and actions such as : _experiential ecological tourism _management of protected natural areas _management of areas near lakes that are threatened with drying up. Furthermore, in the greek mainland generally, alternative forms of production are considered necessery for the development of the economy, while at the same time they can protect and preserve the natural landscape and the unique cultural and architectural heritage.

cultivations and building

the concept

Our first invention was to “ disapear “ the building in the magnificent landscape. Appreciating the beauty and the power of earth we desided to embed the transformation unit into the mountain. This gesture allowed us to design our production unit with a free - open plan, while at the same time avoid having a big contemporary building in comparison with the unique ambiance of traditional architecture. The architecture form has to be erased, but in a way that it establishes relations with the existing natural environment. The basic architectural concept behind the design was that the whole is volumetrically articulated around rectangular patios. These openings in the earth orginise the different functions and connect the building with the external environment while at the same time offer the necessary ventilation and allow the sun light to enter in the interior. Appart from the patios , the main element which organises the whole synthesis is the elongated stone wall which separates and isolates the production from public uses and offices. It΄s orrientation, on the contrary of the lines of cultivations and the other main construction walls, declares a use of a powerful boundary between the new landscape proposal and the existing natural and architectural environment. At the same time, our design gives emphasis at connection of morphological and other aspects of the rural landscape with the protection of natural resources. Our interest in maintenance of the terraces and dry-stone walls is determinant for the synthesis.

Rural landscapes, as the material parameter of a particular mode of appropriating natural resources, are determined by the current social relations, which dictate how they are approached. These rules define a set of practices which contribute to the modulation of the natural geometry of a place. In addition, technical knowledge and its applications affect the kinds and rates of land use. The mporphology of the landscape and the ways of interaction with the natural invironment may change to a very large degree, as they are greatly dependent on the history of human groups and the evolution of their political, economic and technological characteristics. Rural landscapes, found worldwide, impress and incite the human spirit more than other human works, evidently by acting as reminders of the incessant laboring of human beings, of the history of toiling in the course of which man was sustained by the earth itself, but also because they envince a technology, a know- how and an ability to manage the environment.

Between East and West : The example of Wang Shu

Reason for this lecture constituted our travel in China in 2014. In this trip we came in contact with a different culture and we watched closely the radical changes that happen in this country. The example of China, a country that sacrifices everything in the sake of modernization, seemed to us as an ideal one, in order to think about terms such as regionalism, contemporary architecture and tradition. China, a country which the population is almost equal with that of Europe and America together, has come to the forefront of world stage. Everyone refers to China and talks about her great economic power and the rapid development of the last 30 years. However, in the delirium of a globalized culture and also a powerful economy as never before, how is it possible to appreciate the traditions and values related to this place? It is an undeniable fact that the last three decades, China has turned into an example of “rapid urbanization”, the result of which emerge in the violent transformations of landscapes, cities and infrastructures. Despite the enormous economic development, the biggest country of world, suffers from a cultural identity crisis. China has had to adapt to new circumstances -economic, cultural, and social -in order to succeed in its role as a global superpower. So, with these data we can understand how normally was the turn of interest in the architecture process which is directly linked with the concept of modernization. In this context, we notice that there is a widespread anxiety of architects that has more to do with the lack of local idioms. The spirit that prevails finally is an amalgam of communist heritage, which is a remnant of the previous situation , mixed with modern Western language and stereotypes and consist what we called modern “chinesity “. We observed that Chinese megacities grow continuously around contrasts. Contrasts between small and big, low and high, traditional and modern, paltry and luxury, shadow and light, silence and deafening noise. These contrasts are characteristic of Chinese cities, most of which suffer from an internal enforcement pathogenesis of imposition of big scale and loss of meter that leads to enormous inequalities. The 2012 Pritzker Price Award given to the “unknown” Wang Shu , brought back to the surface the issue of the connection of contemporary architecture with tradition. So, the questions that arising are the following: Can we approach China as place with terms of regionalism, terms which developed in Europe? Does traditional Chinese architecture connects to the contemporary one? How does Wang Shu uses the history , tradition and features of the place he work ? Our visit to Wang Shu’s projects and our experiential experience with space, helped us to approach these questions. The approach, however, such a distant and different culture with western eyes lurking dangers. Which ‘’ Chinese’’ place we are supposed to discover and what is the history and the philosophy of people who live and build there? Key-words : China, Wang Shu , tradition, contemporary, experience, place

Changing Cube

_ Greek Student Architectural Competition for the construction with aluminium, intitled Urban Box _ Collaborators: Amalia Konidi, Sotiria Kriemadi _ 2nd award _ June 201

Changing Cube general characteristics The idea of this competition is a changing cube, which dimensions and proportions are organized in an horizontal and vertical plane inspired by the Modulor of LeCorbusier and also by the golden ratio. The one pair of parallel sides remains constant, while the other is drawn out of the boundaries of the original prism while retaining the form of a cube as the dominant core of the whole construction. The different colours of the facades (red, yellow, blue, green) correspond to the different functions of the items on the facades of the kiosk.

goals The main goal was to design a space based on human measures - both the employer in the kiosk as well and the other users of it - that’s why the study was based on the Modulor of LeCorbusier. The consequence of the design was the clarity and purity of form through clear and simple lines. On the facades there are three main horizontal zones separating construction on base (foundation), main body (main volume receiving function) and coronation (skylights that provide lighting and visibility). Our concern was to create a space with different qualities and flexibility of the shell. We create areas of relaxation, concentration, movement, space to be allocated to public life, making our kiosk the stand point of reference for the urban life. The mutability of the shell allows the kiosk to host a variety of functions at every hour of the day, such as providing information about the city and its cultural life, selling newspapers and tickets for events taking place in the city. The most important thing of the design is the ability of the kiosk to adapt and fit in different parts of the urban environment, as the structure and form are very flexible to function with the contemporary structured landscape. The recognition of kiosk in the urban environment is achieved with intense chromatic choices for the duration of day. Also, during the night, the kiosk is litted up by the interior with smaller lightning sources that are placed in the vertical elements of facades that permit to have uses like seating-relaxing-eating-discussing.

The linear planting of the vines was the main source of inspiration. The linearity is expressed on the slender proportions of the buildings which stand on a path network able to integrate smoothly into the alignments of the landscape. The paths seem to slot the vineyards while they are actually abiding to the layout of the scenery. Every function is assigned to its own volume. The winery is located on the main axis of the circulation network. The material of the buildings -colored concrete- serves the main goal of harmonizing with the natural environment. The basic element of the synthesis is the fact that it offers the opportunity to walk among the vineyards and get in touch with the nature.

COMPASS

_Student Architectural Competition about Visitors’ Centre of S. Niarxos Foundation _Collaborator:Takopoulos Michalis

context The location has a very particular character due to the proximity to the sea. The existence of the biggest port of Greece, the port Piraeus, near the site, is the most important factor of its continuous transformation in urban level. One of the most important transformations was the construction of the esplanade during the Olympic games in 2004. The esplanade joins the sea with the town. Now with the construction of the cultural center of Athens the meaning of this pedestrian road will turn into a landmark for the whole area.

concept idea

A new distinctive pavilion is being formed in the existing environment. The placement of the building adapts to the lines and borders and permits the public flow to penetrate it. The pavilion is a compass. Among the straight lines from north to south, a new one is added and it functions as an orientation axis towards the cultural center. The idea of the compass is expressed as two patios in the upper level of the building, creating three different frames. The visitor can admire the town of Athens in the north, enjoy the Mediterranean Sea in the South and observe the construction of the new cultural center.

content

Functionality and sustainability are the two main factors which affected the pavilions design. The buildings plan is a simple square 16 x 16 meters. This square consists of four different spaces which can host different functions or be combined in order to respond to users requirements. In particular, the pavilion consists of a small exhibition center, a lecture hall, an info point and small room for 3d visual presentation of the new building. In special circumstances the first three spaces can create one bigger hall in order to increase pavilions capacity for a lecture or host a large-scale exhibition. Except for the integration of the interior, the buildings functions can be expanded to external environment. The material and the construction of the building are linked to its ephemeral use and its limited time of life. The metal frame is easily constructed and deconstructed without leaving permanent traces on the ground. The ephemeral character is also expressed by using shipping pallets in the elevations. Shipping pallet is a very common and low cost material which can be fully modified. This material can be easily found in the port of Piraeus where many ships arrive daily. The second hand pallets in the faรงade transfer the ambience of the sea and the port right into the site.

context Site of high natural and cultural value-region of virgin nature. A physical phenomenon resembling to vertical curving sheets evolving in the sky.

concept Tracing the sky on the ground. A new distinctive landmark is being formed in the natural environment. An extensive landscape structure consisting of curved elongated metal walls forms itineraries in the site, imitating the shape of the northern lights. The observatory and the planetary constitute a uniform spherical structure, serving as a reference to the dome of the sky..

content The overall synthesis consists of 3 basic scenarios. 1_Circulation scenario: The circulation network proposed demonstrates a range of paths allowing the visitors’ contact with the natural environment. The paths function also as a connection with important city facilities such as the sports center and the skiing infrastructure. 2_Wall scenario: These walls have a symbolic role in the site. Therefore, the selected material metal sheets of corten- is intentionally chosen because of its special color and texture. These rusted metal surfaces accomplish a high level of integration while the dense openings allow the unstopped contact with the surrounding environment. 3_Facilities scenario: The building complex containing accommodation and social areas is placed between the curved walls. Wide horizontal openings serve as privileged views to the nature, as well as to the Aurora Borealis phenomenon. Regarding the leading functions of the observatory and the planetary, these are combined in one single unit of clear and absolute spherical geometry. The planetary forms a sphere surrounded by a circular ascending observation path leading to the main astronomical observatory. Finally, an alternative observation opportunity is proposed with open-air sky and city observatories.

REACTION

_“120 HOURS international student competition about designing a meeting point and festival beacon at the Oya music festival in Oslo. _Collaborator:Chatzinikolaou Emmanuil

The most dynamic factor in such a large event is the accumulated crowd. This dramatic increase of human activity in such a short period of time is sure to bring imbalance to the local ecosystem. Our idea is that the short-lived, yet cataclysmic human presence can be imprinted on the park’s geomorphology. This can be achieved by the increasing protrusion from the earth’s surface of linear wooden elements, triggered by the formation of a crowd on special surfaces, directly in front of the stages, which are part of a hydraulic pressure system. The mass moving of the vertical elements alter the site’s relief, manifesting in this way the idea that a broad wide and extensive action can have a direct and simultaneous impact , either towards preservation or destruction, on a different location, due to the perplex interlocking that defines the natural world. The wooden columns bear on their tops recesses used for feeding or watering the fauna living in the park and neighboring Botanical Garden or migrating. Once raised, these elements create a particular spacial situation according to which visitors wonder around them while experiencing the vigorous activity of birds above their heads they gradually descend, only to vanish once again, by the end of the season. In this way, despite the disruption that occurs during the days of the festival, the visitors will have collectively and in a manner most practical contributed the rejuvenation of the local ecosystem. Our approach to the term sustainability is that a system should be superposed to the existing ecosystem in order to ensure its prosperity and consequently create a site-specific architectural product that redefines the relationship between man and natural element. The unique plain spreads and engages with the wider areas of the three stages, as a unifying element, into which the visitor is absorbed and then directed towards the structure of the meeting point, where he or she can relax, socialize and get informed about environmental protection. The wooden structure sits on the higher levels of the site, serving as a vantage point for observing the activities of the festival.

A GLIDING SQUARE

_Urban Design - Re-Thinking public space in Athens _4th year studio _Collaborators: Kriemadi Sotiria, More Beatriki

site In the core of the historical centre of Athens is located Varvakios Square, opposite to the Varvakios Market which is the biggest meat market in the centre of town. Articulated between two of the most crowded and popular squares ( Omonia and Monastiraki ) Varvakios Squre consistute an open urban space with lots of opportunities and great dynamic. The current use of the square seems to be problematic. The main reason is the non exhistance of continuity between the street and the main space of the square which is at a higher level than that of the road. Absence of visual contact disincline people to either walk through it or sit and relax. Our proposal is focusing on this problematic issue and creates the propper situation for re-use the space.

concept We choose to restore the continuity between the street and we design the new urban space on the same level. At the same time, we use a number of vertical street lights and lines with vegetation in the two sides/entrances of the square in order to create filters and protect the users. We create a colourful garden in the centre of Athens where people can relax, eat , play and enjoy the greek weather. The whole is organised with lines of different lenght and wide. These lines are transformed from vegetation to water or to benches. The main idea is completed with an independant market using wooden elements which can close or open according to the needs of users.

concept

Dominant role in the design of the building was the fact that the lot was in the corner of a building plot. So, it was important how we could handle succesfully the angle. We choose to keep the angle free at the level of the road and we create a transitional space which at the same time links and divides the public space from the private yuards and allows the opening of the building to the city.

On the basis of an unhidered transition between the level of concepts and that of experiences, an experiment is set, hypothesizing on whether or not functional space, that can cause the physical and psychological tension of an art installation, is possible. Theory shall fuel design and construction.
