A NIGHT OF EXCELLENCE AND ELEGANCE CELEBRATING SANFORD
At the 8th Annual Best of Sanford Gala, the red carpet ushered the community into the Ritz Theater for an evening of celebration, elegance, and pride. The event highlighted not only what makes Sanford, Historic Downtown Sanford and Seminole County great, but also makes America great—the small business owner.
Excitement was in the air as nominees brought their loved ones to share in their success. Winners were selected from the top three nominees in over 50 “Best In” categories, such as casual dining, microbreweries, nail salons, and event venues. The range of honors reflects the city’s diverse offerings.
Mayor Art Woodruff issued a special proclamation declaring September 10, 2024, as “Best of Sanford Day,” because the event is about more than recognition; it’s about building community and stimulating the local economy.
The gala combined the event organizer and publisher of My Sanford Seminole Magazine, Perla Crosby’s pride in her adopted home, with her love for her native Dominican Republic (DR). “I am forever grateful for the opportunities this city has offered me,” says Crosby.
Making the evening more exciting, an entourage of Dominican business and civic leaders, including the Dominican general consul in Orlando, Francisco Holi Matos, the mayor of Juan Dolio, Noel Cedeño, a town in the DR, was in attendance to support Love Missions’ expansion into the DR. Proceeds from the event were donated to the nonprofit, which aims to end human trafficking.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
This year marks an important milestone for My Sanford Seminole Magazine as we celebrate our 10th anniversary! A decade ago, we envisioned a magazine that would promote unity and well-being in Sanford’s diverse community. Today, that vision is a reality. As the city’s first magazine, we’ve grown into a pillar of Sanford and Seminole County. Our annual Best of Sanford Readers’ Choice Awards Gala reflects the community’s passion and unity in Sanford and beyond.
My Sanford Seminole Magazine has experienced many key stages, from being the official magazine of two airlines on domestic and international flights to and from Orlando Sanford International Airport, to being awarded the 2024 Best Publication in Florida by the Best of Florida Awards.
This year’s gala paid tribute to my beloved Dominican Republic, with Dominican Consul General Francisco Holi Matos and key leaders from both the Caribbean nation and Central Florida in attendance. We presented the “Dominican Excellence Award” to notable
Dominicans who have made outstanding contributions in Seminole County.
All proceeds from the Best of Sanford Gala will go to Love Mission Global, a Sanford-based organization fighting human trafficking. The funds will help open a shelter in Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic. Mayor Noel Cedeño and a business delegation also attended the gala awards.
Thank you, Sanford and Seminole County, for your unwavering support. This has truly been my version of the American dream.
Love,
Perla is the founder, Editor-in-Chief, and publisher of My Sanford Seminole Magazine. She envisioned a local publication that would foster unity and promote goodwill within Sanford’s culturally diverse community— a goal she has successfully achieved. Perla also conceived and established the Sanford Tourism Office, where she served as its first Chairperson.
Prior to this, she had a distinguished career as a Diplomat in Rome, Italy, serving as the Director General of Tourism. During her tenure, she also founded a successful tourism and business magazine.

For many older adults, the thought of visiting the dentist is more than just a minor inconvenience—it's a source of intense anxiety. Whether it's the lingering memory of a painful procedure from decades ago or the fear of losing control in the dental chair, this anxiety can prevent them from getting the care they need. This is where Dr. George Mitrogogos and the staff at Sanford Dental Excellence come in. Their mission is to create a welcoming environment and offer pain-free services to calm patients’ fears and meet their needs.
Technology Meets Empathy
“The majority of the people who come into our office are in their 50s to 70s. They grew up with dentists who didn’t have the technology we have today,” said Dr. Mitrogogos. Memories of the smells, the noise of the drills, and the pain are associated with a dental appointment. Dr. Mitrogogos understands that a visit to the dentist can be nerve-wracking. “I tell my patients what I would do for my family members. We’re here for them.”
TRANSFORMING DENTAL EXPERIENCES DR. GEORGE MITROGOGOS
BY MARY BOZA CRIMMINS
Their commitment to patient care and comfort hasn't gone unnoticed. Dr. Mitrogogos and his team have been honored with the Best of Sanford Award six times: 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. It’s a testament to their dedication to creating a positive dental experience. The boutique office specializes in the latest technology while “ensuring that everyone is pampered when they come in. We are far from corporate. We’re cozy. Our patients are greeted by name when they come in.”
Dr. Mitrogogos credits his staff, whom he refers to as co-workers, for much of their office’s success. There is no employee turnover, everyone knows his or her role, and there is a high level of mutual respect.
Because dentistry constantly advances, he completes hundreds of continuing education hours yearly when only 30 are required every two years. His office provides painless procedures like IV sedation, laser dentistry, and intraoral scanners to prevent uncomfortable gag reflexes.
Mentorship Shapes Purpose
As a boy growing up in Altamonte Springs, Dr.
Mitrogogos dreamed of becoming a plastic surgeon for kids. On a mission trip to Panama, he was disappointed when assigned to work with Dr. John Burkett, a dentist. After spending a week learning from the man he still refers to as his mentor, Dr. Mitrogogos returned home and announced to his dad that he was going to become a dentist.
Dr. Mitrogogos graduated at the top of his class and served in the Army for five years. While stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia, he worked in a specialty clinic where many of his patients were retiring officers who wanted implants or veneers. To meet these needs, he learned the advanced technological skills of computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and cone beam CT scans.
Structure Enables Success
Dr. Mitrogogos's unique experience in the Army helped prepare him for private practice. In 2015, he joined Sanford Dental Excellence, owned by his father-in-law, Dr. Stephen Seidler. He learned from his father-in-law the importance of providing all aspects of dentistry, so patients don’t have to be referred
to other doctors. They can stay where they feel the most comfortable.
The efficiently run office means that when the doctor goes home, he can enjoy time with his wife, Aimee, whom he met as an undergrad at the University of South Florida. The couple have two young daughters, Abby, who is almost 8, and Alana, who is 4. Periodically, you can see the family cruising the intercoastal in their jet boat. In addition to family time, he enjoys group running, pickleball, tennis, and racquetball.
Ultimately, Dr. Mitrogogos’s down-to-earth personality, work ethic, and empathy are key to his professional and personal accomplishments. He provides more than dental care-–he provides compassion. n
FROM WORLD CHAMPS TO LOCAL HEROES Lake Mary All-Stars Honored Across the Region
BY DANIELLA HUME
In a nail-biting showdown that will be remembered for years to come, the Lake Mary All-Stars have made history by clinching the Little League World Series championship, triumphing over Taiwan 2–1 in an exhilarating eight-inning battle.
This historic win marks the first championship title for a Florida team in the Little League World Series final after eight previous attempts. Seminole County is buzzing with pride as they celebrate their young athletes’ monumental achievements.
To honor the champions, the city of Lake Mary organized a grand parade that saw thousands of residents from across the state turn out to show their support. The celebration featured a vibrant procession of public-safety vehicles, elected officials, a marching band, and local professional team mascots. Notably, former MLB player and Sanford native David Eckstein joined the festivities, highlighting the significance of this victory for the community.
Victor Mieses, father of first baseman DJ Mieses, expressed his gratitude for the support the team has received. “It’s been an amazing experience. I urge all parents out there to keep working with their kids in sports and to support them,” he said. “A huge thanks to the community for coming out and supporting us for this great accomplishment. I am a very proud dad.”
The celebration culminated in a lively block party on Fourth Street, turning the day into a joyous occasion for families and fans alike.
Coach Johnathan Anderson reflected on the team’s journey, emphasizing the resilience and determination displayed by his players. “It’s crazy to say it out loud. It’s been over 70 years since the Little League World Series began, and it’s wild to think we are the first Florida team to bring home the title. I am lost for words. It’s amazing to have it all work out, but we did it somehow,” he said.
The Lake Mary All-Stars were also recognized at the 8th annual Best of Sanford Awards Gala, where they received the prestigious
“Trailblazer Award.” Coach Anderson remarked, “That’s a high regard to be honored with that! I see these awards displayed around town, and it feels really good to know we are being recognized.” When asked about the message this victory sends to the community and aspiring young athletes, he added, “I hope it sends the message that hard work and determination can accomplish anything. Through hard work and consistency—practicing twice daily—we proved that no one could outwork us.”
The boys’ achievements have not only brought pride to Lake Mary but also have young ath-

letes across the region. Many players reside in Sanford and attend local schools, including Chase Anderson, Lathan Norton, Luis Calo, DeMarcos Mieses, Teraj Alexander, Garrett Rohozen, Hunter Alexander, and Liam Morrisey, all of whom played pivotal roles in the championship run.

As part of their victory celebration, the team was honored with keys to the city of Lake Mary, a special parade at Walt Disney World, and a celebration hosted by Governor Ron DeSantis at the Governor’s Residence in Tallahassee. At their October meeting, the Sanford City Commission issued a proclamation declaring August
25th as *Lake Mary Little League Day.* Players, coaches, and their families were in attendance and expressed gratitude for all the support to the local community during their historic win.
The Lake Mary All-Stars’ triumph serves as a testament to the power of teamwork, perseverance, and community support, leaving a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations. n

Alongside these culinary treasures, Downtown Sanford is home to a myriad of small businesses. Small retail stores, artisanal shops, and art galleries make it a haven for both foodies and shoppers.
A Downtown of Art and Charm
Sanford’s Downtown is a combination of old-world charm and artistic expression. The streets are adorned with colorful sculptures that reflect the city’s commitment to public art. These beautiful works of art are complemented by historic buildings, some of which have been carefully preserved to maintain their 19th-century architecture. Together, these elements create a visually captivating Downtown that is perfect for leisurely walks and exploration.
Convenient Access and Logistics
One of the major advantages of visiting Sanford is its convenient location and easy accessibility to Orlando Sanford International Airport. Sanford also boasts other excellent transportation services, including the SunRail and a free trolley service that makes it easy to get around the city. As a Sanford resident for over 25 years, it has been a true joy to witness the regrowth of our city. I am deeply honored to be recognized as one of Sanford's Best. Being a small-business owner of Processing Post comes with its challenges, but as a woman-owned business, these challenges are all the more rewarding. Along this journey, I have had the privilege of meeting incredible, like-minded women who also are leading their own businesses. I have “found my tribe” among these exceptional ladies, and I am proud to stand beside them.
MARNIE FORESTIERI
Young Innovators Academy
When Marnie Forestieri, who is the CEO and founder of the Young Innovators Academy, looks toward the future, she sees hope in the next generation and wants to be an integral part of helping these students lead the way. She believes that they will be the change-makers if we empower these future innovators now. By implementing the ideals of using the Head, Hands, and Heart, children can learn how to think like a change-maker. They can become more empathetic to those around them. Marnie’s mindset simply put is that innovation is the advantage. She said, “Our mission is to support, honor, develop, and inspire early-childhood professionals to reach their full potential.” She also believes that the philosophy is simple: “We believe that everyone is a born innovator. Our mission is to keep that mindset for life.”
At the Young Innovators Academy, research and professional development go hand in hand. With educators leaving the industry in droves, there is a strong need to rebuild the model of early- childhood education. When educators enroll in the year-long program, they will receive extensive training on how to make a lasting impact on their students, create engaging relationships with parents and the community around them, and unlock the potential from within to reach every student. The programs were created by Agency by Design, and by Project Zero at Harvard University.

The finance industry is not for the faint of heart, but I am grateful that our community recognizes our hard work. Together, we are making our ancestors proud and setting a powerful example that women truly do run the world.
A special thanks to my amazing husband for his unwavering support, my entire family, and especially to the women who paved the way for us and those who will follow in our footsteps. We will always be cheering for you!

Baking wasn’t always her plan; she initially had a science career in the pharma-co industry, using baking as a weekend hobby. After over 25 years in the culinary world, she turned her passion into her profession.
Her journey started in Puerto Rico, where local media recognized her creative baking skills, turning her hobby into a unique business. Determined to excel, she mastered baking. "Baking is an expression; it’s the only art form you can eat. It’s fulfilling to create something that becomes a happy memory,” she says.
After moving to Florida, Maressa embraced the Cottage Food Law, which allowed her to run a home-based business. Her kitchen soon overflowed with ideas, leading her husband to suggest opening a storefront. In 2016, after
years of planning, The Sweet Chalet Shoppe opened in Sanford, as a unique baking and sugar art supply and a place for inspiration. She expanded further with the Sweet Color Lab in 2021, bringing Creativity and more business to the area.
The Sweet Chalet Shoppe has become a hub for both local and international pastry chefs. Its reputation has grown globally, being named one of the best U.S. retailers by Cake Masters for three consecutive years and gaining recognition in baking publications and podcasts.
Because of her dedication, knowledge and innovative products, Maressa has become an icon behind the scenes for many professional sugar artists participating on national and international television shows around the world as well as a selected sponsor and mentor to the USA TEAM for the “World Cake Designer Championship” by The International Federation of Pastry, Gelato & Chocolate (FIPGC) in Milan, Italy.
heavily involved in several local Chamber of Commerces, including the Seminole Chamber (which she won the business award for 2024), the Sanford Chamber, and the Casselberry Chamber. She still manages to make time to be a part of the Women’s Club of Sanford as well.
Her support for youth-centered programs consists of The Sharing Center, Teen Challenge Southeast, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Central Florida as well as the Rescue Outreach Mission.
While she maintains that making her community better than ever is important to her, being the matriarch of her family will always be her top priority. She and her husband, Paul, enjoy time with their four children Simran, Mandy, Rajpaul, Yashpal, and their fur baby, Simba.
On September 10th, at the 8th Annual Best of Sanford Awards, The Sweet Chalet Shoppe won the "Best Sweet Experience" award, highlighting its impact. Today, as a Seminole Boss Lady, she continues to mentor new businesses, making Sanford and Seminole County even sweeter.

THE CREATIVE HEART OF SANFORD:
Sanford's Midway Elementary School of the Arts
BY DANIELLA HUME
It’s a hub for imagination, creativity, and critical thinking, where students are encouraged to use both the right and left sides of their brains. Sanford’s Midway Elementary School of the Arts provides a learning environment that seamlessly integrates challenging academics with a diverse arts program, enrolling children from all corners of Seminole County.
Midway’s unique method centers on the Artful Learning model crafted by the Leonard Bernstein Center. This approach highlights blending arts with fundamental subjects to reshape conventional education into a stimulating and interconnected journey of learning and exploration, according to Principal Mallory Lambert. The model encompasses four core tenets—Experience, Inquiry, Create, and Reflect—that influence the formulation and delivery of lessons, resulting in an unforgettable learning experience.
The “Experience” aspect involves engaging students in activities that stimulate their senses, like field trips and hands-on projects, to help them better connect with the subject matter on a deeper level of understanding. In the study of ecosystems, for example, students might craft a diorama to illustrate their learning process. “Inquiry” promotes critical thinking by encouraging students to ask questions and conduct research. The principle of “Create” empowers students to showcase their understanding through their creations in visual arts or music and encourages them to explore performing arts as well. The principle of “Reflect” promotes self-evaluation and personal development by urging students to assess their learning methods and achievements.
As the only arts magnet school in Seminole County, Midway’s approach to learning helps students’ growth and development. Through the integration of arts, students nurture their creativity and hone essential skills like problem-solving abilities, resilience, and adaptability. Principal Lambert emphasizes the transferability of these skills outside the school
environment. For instance, students excelling in theater can leverage their thinking to tackle intricate math problems. Teamwork cultivated through art projects further boosts group work dynamics in science labs.
Once students graduate from Midway, the learning can continue with the school’s partnership with Millennium Middle School. The middle school’s magnet program emphasizes the arts and guarantees that students can pursue their artistic endeavors through eighth grade.
Midway’s core values revolve around the belief that challenges are meant to be overcome with determination and a positive outlook. “The phrase ‘We can do hard things’ embodies our school culture by encouraging resilience and a growth mindset,” Lambert explains. This philosophy embraces a mindset focused on development and progress for students and faculty alike. Principal Lambert stresses the significance of nurturing self-assurance through pursuits while recognizing accomplishments and offering helpful guidance.
Lambert looks ahead to a future for the arts magnet program that respects their core values while always aiming for top-notch quality. Her enthusiasm for arts education is evident in her belief in the positive changes it brings to students’ lives and the community. n
